Why are there no black people in accounting? (Serious)

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 04:27 AM PST

There was one black guy in all the accounting classes I took and there were no black people in the 30 of us who comprised my starting class at the mid-sized accounting firm I worked in.

I'm curious why this is the case? I don't know any other field where there's such a huge gap in race.

Does anyone struggle to find common interest with classmates/co-workers?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 05:25 PM PST

I feel like everyone only talks about fantasy sports, it's very frustrating because my main interests are computers which is not shared by the average person. I have other hobbies that I do from time to time but I don't have much to talk about other than work or school if the interaction is necessary.

I feel the need to learn these sports just so I have something to talk about, which doesn't sit right with me. I do like sports, I just don't understand it at a level to have a full on conversation about the teams, specific matches, or even players. Thus, i'm unable to input much into group conversations or 1 on 1 situations.

    Struggling with possible job change

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 07:41 PM PST

I recent achieved my undergrad in accounting in May and I am currently in my masters. I also just received my NTS so it's time to buckle down and start testing. I work for a small company and I love my job but it is a mixture of bookkeeping, hr, and whatever fire is started that day. My boss and I always knew I would outgrow the position but I thought the timing would be closer to the end of my masters and after I tested. I was recently offered a job to become a forensic accountant and it has amazing benefits and sounds like the perfect career move. However, my current job has counter offered and wants me to stay with the promise of giving me more CFO experience. Instead of bookkeeping I would do the monthly financials, budgets, board meeting etc. In the meeting with the current CFO and CEO they alluded to the fact I would pigeon hole myself by specializing and would hate my new job in a public firm. Is this their attempt as a last ditch effort to keep me or could I possibly narrow my future career choices? I am struggling with the decision. I know I want to work at the place that provides the best opportunity to grow and I think the things I value from my current job are my relationships and the flexibility. I am worried I am too comfortable and could let an amazing opportunity pass me by.

Will my GPA cause my resume to get filtered out?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 10:39 PM PST

I'm a college student looking to recruit for Summer Leadership Programs this Spring. My Cumulative GPA is 3.3 but my Accounting GPA is 2.67. I know some firms (like PwC) ask for both GPAs and I'm afraid my lower GPA will work against me.

    Tax OR Audit

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 10:16 PM PST

So.. What does a tax accountant do compared to audit? People have different opinions about workload and these jobs in general. Anyone currently in tax and audit and ones who have been in both tax and audit please share your thoughts. Whats different between the two, how is one better than the other?, which one has higher pay?

Impending Recession (2020?) and massive increase in advisory hires. Disaster for new/recent hires?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 12:11 PM PST

    Hi,

I couldn't help but notice, when I went to the celebration day event for PwC, over half of the hires were going into advisory, then ~45% to audit, and only two in tax (one of them was me). I spoke to some friends that are working at other B4, and they reported back a similar ratio. This got me thinking....historically, isn't advisory one of the first segments to go? It is kind of hard for clients to forgo audit and tax services, so naturally they will reduce expenses but reducing the amount of "advisory services" used. Should this round of new hires and the next couple be hesitant to join the advisory service line?

    Thanks for your thoughts!
