This guy wanted me to make 50 cold calls during an interview. Is it me or is this just a no??

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 09:06 AM PST

I went for an interview for a tech start up. Guy seemed nice on the phone, had a prior business that seemed reputable. Nice people for sure. Asked me to come in to learn more about me, explain the position more, and get some more ideas about compensation.

The second I arrive I'm greeted and I was told the guy id be interviewing with is in a meeting and will be with me in 30 minutes or so, which annoyed me, but whatever. 5 minutes later this other guy calls me into his office apologizing on behalf of his boss, and talks to me about what he does, then hands me a sheet of 50 people with a script and asks me to cold call. I immediately was like wtf? Is this the norm or is it just not?

I didn't cold call by the way because I knew nothing about how this company operated or anything about the services but I also decided I wasn't working for free. Was this the right way to go?

    Strategy Tweaking

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 11:16 AM PST

Hey everyone. SDR at SAAS company.

Questions on strategy tweaks, specifically for email messaging - how often do you revisit your strategy and make changes? How often, do you think, is too often?

Saw a lot of success the first 3 quarters of the year, admittedly, without too much strategy and deep thinking involved. The last 4 months have been a different story. One constant is laying the lumber on the phones. Been toying with value messaging, video, simplistic & direct, and bulk messaging. Having very little success (taken me 2.5 months to hit my 1 month target). Feeling like I may be tweaking too often but would love to hear what y'all do.

Is HCM (human capital management) true SaaS?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 10:33 AM PST

Early in the interview process for a possible AE role with Paylocity. I'm wondering if it's true software as a service? I'm coming from an advertising/marketing AE role, so I'm unfamiliar with the space.

Also- anyone have experience w Paylocity?? Good or bad?

    Thanks!

    Ever feel like an imposter?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 02:03 PM PST

    What's up Sales Reddit.

I have been struggling lately with feeling like an imposter. I get positive reviews from my leaders, have won multiple awards in a previous roles, and was over goal for the first 2 quarters before my new quota was increased by over 25%.

But I don't feel I am actually good at sales.

Does anyone else struggle with this? I don't know if it is my current position getting me down or if I am being too hard on myself but I am struggling to maintain motivation and find I am having a ton of negative self talk.

    Any advice?

What car do you drive to B2B meetings (where it will be seen) and is it important ?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 11:20 AM PST

Following the earlier question about what watch you wear to a meeting I'm Interested to hear people thoughts on what car you would prefer to take to a business client meeting where you know they will see it (most of my meetings are at the businesses premises). Over the years I have had varying feedback that,

    1) Something nice shows you know your business well enough to make a decent living out of doing it and that should carry some weight, 2) If you can afford a flash car you must be ripping me off.

3j Makes no difference at all.

I used to have a boss who drove his Jaguar that he replaced every year to the company offices, park it around the back and do all his client facing visits in a rusty old heap of a car!

    What do I do now?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 11:16 AM PST

TLDR; I have down time before my next job and I don't know what to do with my time. I want to use it to make myself the best version of me that I can by next month.

I accepted an AE (inside sales) offer from a company but I don't start until January. I also have one more company that I'm in the interview process with right now (outside sales).

I'm really struggling with what to do with my time before I either start at company A in January or company B (to be determined).

I'm used to being on a schedule (college athlete) but I can't figure out what to do with my time now besides work out and play video games.

I also have issues regulating my sleep and it's hard for me to not stay up really late at night even though my gf goes to bed early.

Any suggestions from people who have been in this situation before?

I also read challenger sale and SPIN recently but I don't want to flood myself with more sales reading before I implement what I've learned in the books.

    Phone screen/interview

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 11:16 AM PST

I have a "30 minute intro call" with the CEO of a small (less than 50 employees) SaaS company. This is for an inside sales representative position I applied for. This is the first communication I've gotten from this potential employer.

What can I expect from this call? This company sells marketing optimization software. And is backed by VCs in California. This is a Midwest company.

What would be a good base and OTE for this position?

This would be my first sales job so looking for any advice!

    Need Sales Personnel to Question!

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 11:08 AM PST

    Hello reddit,

I am a student at a university in the United States and am looking to interview just three candidates in any industry of sales to help complete a project for one of my courses. If your daily tasks consist of selling to prospects then you qualify to be one of my sources. I just want to ask 3-4 simple questions involving your processes, and how you might utilize the concepts from my class in your daily selling. If interested, comment within the thread what industry you are in or send me a message and we can proceed.

    Thanks!

    How effective is your voicemail?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 11:08 AM PST

I'm reviewing my voicemail and email opens activity and noticed that if I am sending email immediately after leaving a short voicemail, the open rate goes up a bit. My company wants us to leave a voicemail and keep record of it in SF. I came across a book on Amazon saying voicemail after either second call or 5th call to the prospect are only effective. After few thousand calls, I really doubt its effectiveness to get a call back unless it is very very specific and compelling. With the daily quota to complete, I am finding it hard to leave any well researched voicemail.

Given that in a B2B environment, you have to touch the prospect at least few times, what do you guys do? How effective you find the voicemail?

Medical Equipment - Capital Sales Pipeline

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 06:50 AM PST

I am looking to figure out how to have a sales team effectively build a capital pipeline for equipment into hospitals. These are usually large purchases that happen once every 5-10 years. Are there any programs or websites you can use that show various hospital construction projects? Or places where RFPs are shown?

    Fidelity Investments

Anyone work at Fidelity Investments in a sales role? How was it? I see that a couple people from my business school work there and are business development managers after 2 years. Glassdoor says they make over $100,000 a year. I'm always skeptical of the financial services industry...

What type of watch do you wear?

Have a job offer for a medium sized company doing educational Saas sales

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 09:29 AM PST

I have a day or two to make a decision. This would be my first sales job.

I interviewed at a medium sized educational software company back in August. Got passed over and saw they've reopened hiring.

Had another interview today and it ended with the guy offering me the job, but saying to take a day or two and think about it. He wants me to be sure this is the right move for me.

I have a background in education, which is what drew me to the product. I know how garbage their competitors are.

    The details are:

25k base, 4% commission on billings and 8% once I'm running my own demos.

Must make a sale in the first 90 days or be fired. That honestly scares me.

They had to do some restructuring lately and slashed their reps down from 10-15 to 4. Hired in a bad batch and had to let them go.

    So Many Listed Emails

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 08:33 AM PST

I'm in SMB SaaS as an SDR. A lot of our customers are usually 1-3 employee businesses. When I'm prospecting I like to find a name, phone and email for who I would think would be the person I want to contact. What I'm starting to run into now is businesses having multiple emails and not knowing where to send the initial one. For example, I have one customer, husband and wife operation, who has a general info email listed, but on their Facebook page there is an email for the husband (eg. name@domain.com). I've sent an email to the latter because that's who I want to talk to. Since then, one of our software has listed that he's opened one email, once, out of four and I haven't been about to get him on the phone. I want to try the other email in case this small operation is more dedicated to that particular email (business one) and have more visibility. Only issue is that I don't want to come off over-bearing.

What are some pros and cons to sending another email? Since I've sent one introductory email, should I send another one or something with more content?

Outside Sales Reps - How does your schedule breakdown

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 08:26 AM PST

Wondering how everyone breaks down between office and field time. I used to try to book appointments daily and work in the field every day, making calls on breaks and working from Starbucks. I got divorced and my daughter isnt in school full time so I have been working from home on the days that I have her. Essentially doing all my quotes, follow up, emails, and cold calls on these days and jam packing the days where I am in the field. It seems to be working for me, but just wondering how everyone else does it.

Looking for Audiobook: Intro for Sales Engineering

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 08:08 AM PST

I was just offered a final interview with a company that sells automation equipment. The interview is next week. I have a degree in engineering but no sales experience. Since I have 6 days to prepare, I'm looking for an audiobook or podcast to listen to about sales while I multitask.

The majority of books I've seen are aimed at general sales. Is Sales Engineering different enough that one book would provide better information than another? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thoughts on draw pay

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 05:51 AM PST

I am currently paid on a draw for the first time in my career. I have a draw that covers my monthly bills, which I negotiated intentionally so that I have a steady stream of income should things dry up at certain points (the sales cycle for my industry can be very long - between 6 and 12 months - so there are definitely peaks and valleys). That said, I have had a great year and will be making between 250k and 300k in my first year. I am not setting an expectation that this will always be the norm, but am confident that I will earn well over 100k year after year.

All of this seems great, and I am the top performer amongst my colleagues. Yet, they all seem to think that draw pay is a rip, and negotiated an actual salary with a smaller comp plan. They talk about how draw pay is a company's way of not investing in the employee. To me, it doesn't matter as long as I continue to produce.

My year end review is coming up, and I feel comfortable and confident that I could discuss changing my pay plan (my management/ownership is a great group to work for). I don't see a reason to right now, but would love feedback from you fine folks to consider prior to my review.

    Thanks!

    About B2B Strategy

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 02:58 AM PST

Hello guys. I'm working for a company who sells a system to webshops and brands. Simply we are partnering with big brands such as Sony, Philips, Samsung etc. and we are trying to sell our database to web shops which have those brands in their catalogue. Also, we are helping brands to distribute their products to retailers. I'm having a hard time to prospect to those people who don't understand what we do. How can I sell more effective with this matter?

Interviewing for a Sales Role for a Company Selling PowerBI solution. I have a few questions.

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 02:13 AM PST

I recently went for an interview at an IT Firm that specializes in selling Business Intelligence tools i.e. PowerBI and things to do with Big Data. I have been selling cloud solutions for 3 years now but never delved into the whole BIG Data / Data Warehousing etc.

Is there someone here who has experience in selling these solutions who doesnt mind sharing some insights like

    1. Who are the Key decision makers to seek out?
    2. How do you explain the business value of the solutions?
    3. What are the kind of questions that help you unlock these needs?
    4. How do you show ROI to the clients?

P.S If u dont mind sharing a slide deck for the pitch you make I would really appreciate.

    Selling a bad product?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 12:41 AM PST

I am the best salesman at my company, but i cant sell this product. I get plenty of replies, but they are all saying no thanks, we don't need your product. I agree my product sucks, has no use. How do I make it seem better? Or at least tell my boss we can't sell it, and to pick another product?

Asked for lower than average salary..what to do?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 11:38 PM PST

So here's the situation.. I am a recent graduate with a masters of engineering (no thesis) in electrical engineering and as this will be my first job, I need some advice. I recently applied to a position as an entry level sales engineer at a company specialized in food processing machine manufacturing. This job is located in LA. Job duties include sales(minor), going to trade shows for company exposure, but mostly provide technical support for company and customers. During the second interview, I was asked for an expected salary. At the moment, I said $50,000 USD annually. After doing some research after the interview, I realized the average entry level sales engineer salary is $60,000 and that was when I realized I completely lowballed myself. I have secured the third and final interview where I will be meeting with the boss next week. How should I negotiate the job salary and unlowball myself? Should I wait till getting the job offer or bring it up during the meeting next week? Or is there anything else I should do? Any kind of help/suggestion would be appreciated!
