How the hell do successful traders actually make money? Posted: 27 Nov 2018 03:01 PM PST I've been trading for nearly 3 years, and quite honestly I stink. I've used every resource I've been able to find, every strategy I can find I've researched, I've tried to learn everything I can. I know that money makers corrupt the market and make it really challenging, but I know that there are some successful traders out there. What do they do? Buy long term hold dividend stocks? Short 'pump and dumps'? Day trade? Swing trade? I've watched the market every day for over 2.5 years, and it's all still so confusing. Anyone have any wisdom? Opening an IRA account VS. just buying S&P 500 stock on Robinhood every month? Posted: 27 Nov 2018 03:45 PM PST What's the difference in my results? Would it not be simpler to use Robinhood because there would be fewer restrictions and penalties? Or am I missing something? [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 Nov 2018 01:05 PM PST A question often asked is if ETFs are any good? Do they do reflect the correct prices? There are enough haters of ETFs and ETNs. So I compared GLD and SLV with underlying futures to see the tracking error. GLD has done a fairly good job of tracking Gold futures especially in the short time periods. Bear in mind that even using futures as instruments it's not possible to track gold prices exactly due to roll over of futures contracts. https://www.grufity.com/grufity/GLD.GC Found very similar results for SLV and Silver futures. Bear in mind, ETFs and ETNs should never be used for long-term investing without considering the counterparty risks that all of them carry. OT - r/StockMarket Monthly Stock Picking Competitions - (Keep it going? or nah...) Posted: 27 Nov 2018 09:13 AM PST Hi r/StockMarket! I just wanted to quickly collect some additional input in here from everyone on this sub regarding the monthly stock picking competitions. Seeing as this month's contest did quite well on participation, it's admittedly got me itching to potentially doing another one here for the final month of the year (December). However, before I setup the new thread to get everyone's picks and rationale, I wanted to first get some input from members of this subreddit. I'm interested to know how many of you would like to see these monthly contests again for next month? Moreover, perhaps making it a regular monthly thing here on r/StockMarket in 2019. If there genuinely is interest from the community here, then we really ought to get serious about these and start adding a members leaderboard point system, and individual members monthly stock picking records into the mix like I do for members of the Stockaholics community. In addition, also adding a 1st place winners log, so people can easily find all of the past monthly winners. I think the most interesting aspect of these monthly contests is where people are required to give a "rationale" for their picks in order to be accepted as a participant for the contests. If we were just simply picking 2 stocks and a direction, with no rationale, that would be no fun imo. While I am now open to the idea of possibly doing these on a regular monthly basis here on r/StockMarket. However, I'd really like to get some feedback from everyone on this sub on how you all feel about this. ...and again, if we're going to do this next year, I think we'll need to get serious with implementing a leaderboard, and a members picking history log. It's a lot work, but I think I'm willing to give it a shot since it's only going to be done a monthly basis, not weekly like we did last year. So, perhaps a bit more doable. I'd be interested to hear what everyone ultimately thinks. Keep it going? Or, nah. Thanks for the input/feedback in advance from everyone! NEWBIE QUESTION : What's the relationship between a corporation and its stock prices? Posted: 27 Nov 2018 04:57 AM PST So I understand that when a corporation becomes public, its stocks are available in the market. But I don't get why it's important for the stock prices to rise. Why can't the corporation function normally when the price of its stocks fall? Well I suppose it's the other way around; when business isn't going well which causes a fall in confidence, leading to stock prices falling as demand falls. But still, why does it matter? How do stock prices affect how well the corporation is running? It's just a question I've had in my head that I can't answer. [link] [comments]
Stocks that are Rising/Falling And Why (27 Nov 2018) Posted: 27 Nov 2018 08:19 AM PST Each day I go through the top rising and falling stocks today, and look for (a) what the company actually does, and (b) why the stock is moving so much. Hopefully this saves you some digging! Below are my notes from 27 November 2018 as of mid-morning. (This list is limited to companies with market cap >$500 million, and also excludes VIX, short ETFs, etc, as these just reflect the market, rather than individual companies.)
