Genetic Testing - Delayed Bill and Max-Out-of-Pocket Question Insurance

Genetic Testing - Delayed Bill and Max-Out-of-Pocket Question

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 01:22 AM PDT

Six months ago, I got one of those fancy (read:expensive) genetic tests (Progenity) done while I was 10 weeks pregnant. My OB assured me that while it was very expensive and few insurance companies covered it, the most I would be responsible for was $99. From what Google tells me, that's the standard deal they offer everyone.

A month or so later I got an EOB from BCBS denying a $7500 payment for the test. My husband kind of freaked out, but I assured him Progenity was just trying to scam as much as they could from insurance and that we'd get a bill for $99 eventually.

Well, eventually has never happened. After waiting a couple months for a bill, I called Progenity to see what the hold up was. They assured me they'd look into it, but I'm due in 3 weeks and still no bill.

In the mean time, BCBS assumes I've paid this $7500 bill I've never paid and likely will never pay. To their knowledge, I've met my max out of pocket for the year, so they are covering everything. Every ultrasound (I had several extra for an unrelated issue), every lab, and I imagine here in a few weeks will cover the entire hospital bill too.

Assuming Progenity gets us a correct bill eventually, what happens? The insurance company will surely realize we never met the max out of pocket and that we owe them money? We have money saved, but I also don't like this hanging over my head.

Any advice on moving things along? I'm not sure if I should keep calling Progenity or just wait.

insurance agent sent confidential/personal info to the wrong address

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 12:39 PM PDT

My insurance agent sent my Life Insurance Policy to the wrong address! However this wasn't just my policy with terms, it included a copy of my original application with my entire families SS #'s (since I had to list beneficiaries) and my complete medical history (as reported on my original application by me) along with basically every tidbit of personal information. The agent sent the package via USPS (with no tracking) to my street address but put the wrong city. The street doesn't exist in the city she sent it to so I'm hoping it will be returned to sender but it has been approximately 6 weeks and she hasn't received anything back. I went to the post office in the city it was sent and they said it generally takes 2 weeks to return mail. I've been very stressed about this and cannot believe how dumb this agent is by sending such sensitive info through USPS without any tracking.

Is this a violation of some type of privacy law or something? Do you have any recommendations for my situation? TIA

    One accident after another

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 02:22 AM PDT

So I was hit in my truck by another driver while he was evading the police. In the end they caught him but the whole process of my insurance figuring out if that person had insurance took months. In that time a drunk driver crashed into that same truck. Now I learn I'm getting covered for the first incident through my insurance (uninsured motorist coverage since I don't have full) and by the drunk drivers insurance for the second incident. Either accident separately wouldn't have been enough to total my truck, but the damages from both combined certainly is. Since it's through two insurance companies will I get to keep my truck along with the full cost of repairs or will it be totaled?

How to make sure i can get a car after my car is totaled, other party at fault.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 02:03 PM PDT

Thanks in advance for any and all feedback!

Two days ago I was struck by another driver and I've been told by the repair shop that it will very likely be totaled (airbags deployed and damage to seat belts as well as body of car).

I still owe on the car more than its current trade in value from the NADA site, and I'm worried that I'll be left without any transportation after this accident that was not my fault (other driver was ticketed, trooper stated he was at fault).

I've never been in an accident and I'm floudering like a fish out of water with all this. I filed claims with my insurance and his, but my communication with his insurance has been very limited so far.

What, if anything, can I do to make sure I still have a car after all is said and done? I need it for work and general transportation for my kids to/from school etc. I owe +$8,000 on the car and the estimated value I found was about $3,500 (2013 Fiat 500 pop).

Surely I won't be left still owing money on a car that was totaled at someone else's fault?

Edit: ok, so without Gap insurance I'm stuck owing whatever is leftover on my loan after the insurance payout. FML. Them's the shakes, I guess. Now I'm trying to sort out what else I can possibly get reimbursed/payment for. 1) This accident happened while I was on the clock working, is there anything my employer would be liable to help with? 2) I also had just gotten front brakes replaced on the car ( less than a month ago, paid $900 for all that) is that a possible reimbursement?

Someone backed into my car and left a scratch, 3 witnesses.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 08:32 PM PDT

Hey, so I was wondering what I should do. Someone backed out their driveway and hit my car and stopped then left. There were 3 neighbors who watched this happen. Now there is only a minor scuff but since this person didn't even have the decency to leave a note or anything I am a little pissed. I left a note on the house's door of the driveway they backed out of ( I'm not sure if they lived there) and told them to call me if they decide to make things right since I'm not gonna pull an insurance claim (I own a 2011 Nissan Versa sedan). Any advise for if they call? I mostly just wanna call them out and make sure this doesn't happen again.

How much does personal risk factor into choosing medical insurance?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 07:38 PM PDT

I'm currently choosing a health plan provided by my company. Rather than list the options, I have a more general question re: high- and low-deductable plans.

I'm reasonably healthy and have never smoked. I get a few medications each month (total co-pay at $10 per is $30) and generally don't have any chronic issues. But I bike into work every day, and I keep the risk of a crash in the back of my mind. It feels weird to say this, but my most likely medical expense may be a large expense that has a fairly low chance of occurring.

My question is: does personal risk like riding a bike factor into choosing a health insurance? If so, I might choose a plan that costs more upfront but has a fairly low deducatable.

Thanks for your advice, insurance pros of Reddit!

Insurance for my unborn baby and the baby's mother

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 07:33 PM PDT

I am 27 and just got my gf pregnant. I have my own insurance for work. She is 25 and still on her dad's insurance.

Can my insurance handle all the maternal doctor visits, birth etc? If not, will her dad's cover it? She's not on my insurance.

After the baby is born can I put it on my insurance if my gf and I aren't married?

What about when my gf needs to get her own insurance when she turns 26? Her employer doesn't offer it. Can she get on mine if we live together?

    So many questions.

should i report to police for this incident?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 06:57 PM PDT

sorry for a vague title, I don't know how to put it.

I was in a in the car in a parking lot, and a lady knocked on my car window and claimed that I hit her car. I was like, lady...I was parked. I wasn't even moving. She kept insisting until witnesses nearby came to help since she was making a scene. They said I never actually hit anyone, and in fact, her trunk opened while she was backing out. It was concluded that she was backing out her car and somehow accidentally pressed a button to open the trunk, which made a noise, and she thought she was hit.

Someone told me that is how the scam is done in this town (or maybe she doesn't know how to drive). I know her car plate number, and although I don't know who the witnesses were , I recorded the conversation where they said it's not my fault, and the lady saying I'm sorry, etc.

I was wondering if I should have a police report of some kind as a document to back myself up just in case something happens. (if the lady goes home and goes cuckcoo and thinks she was really hit.)

Which plan to select from employer?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 08:25 AM PDT

    Hello,

Which plan should I choose for my family? It's currently just my wife and myself but we will be having a child in late December or early January. My wife will be a stay at home mom and I earn 50k a year so the more expensive plan is a little scarier. This money will be pre-tax so it does lessen the burden a little bit.

These rates are for Employee + Family. The values in the middle should be irrelevant it's just the amount of money my employer contributes in our HSA ($800).

    Thank you in advance

What Happens if I Don't Pay for Unused COBRA?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 02:08 PM PDT

I am thinking about not paying the COBRA coverage premiums (not realizing the expense involved until receiving the first invoice). At the time, I thought that having two insurance plans was ideal. There are no issue with lapse of insurance at any point (if the company terminates coverage beginning from the entire COBRA period, which just consists of a month and a week) because my mom and I always had insurance through her company during this time frame (my mom has company insurance, and I am listed as a dependent with her). If we never used the COBRA plan during the coverage period that we're being billed for, and elect not to pay the premiums, are there any ramifications of not paying? Thanks in advance for answering.

Delta Dental will cover procedure but not materials?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 05:25 PM PDT

Title is pretty self-explanatory, assuming I've understood their breakdown correctly - please lmk if I haven't.

Partially covered, with copay: Autogenous connective tissue graft procedure

Not covered: Biological materials to aid in soft and osseous tissue regeneration

According to my provider, the contract fee for "connective tissue graft" (procedure, I assume) is $550 and the fee for "mouth factor" (materials, I assume) is $538.

So at $1088 total per tooth, I'll have to pay $758 of that...times 3 teeth...Seems like a very hefty copay to me for a medically necessary procedure. I'm really in pain and can't chew normally, so this isn't a cosmetic procedure. Can they really cover a needed procedure but not the materials? Is there something else my provider could do as far as billing/codes to fix this?

I'd very much appreciate any insight or suggestions for how to deal with this. Many thanks.

Glitch in online auto insurance quoting service?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 03:46 PM PDT

I've been shopping around for auto insurance for a 2011-2014 Subaru WRX by getting quotes online. As expected, I was getting quoted around $400-500/month, but on Geico I was getting quoted $230 for the same exact coverage! I re-ran the Geico calculations multiple times and verified the car info, but it stayed between $200-250. I don't want to go through the process of buying a car only to find out I was led to believe my insurance would be that low. Are they trying to entice me to go with them and then screw me up the ass when I claim (from what I've heard)?

Any rental car LIABILITY insurance experts? (international from USA?)

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 01:18 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I travel quite a bit, but am never quite clear on how well I am covered for liability in other countries.

Current status: US resident, geico insurance. This insurance I am told does not cover vehicles rented overseas

While traveling: My credit cards would help cover the vehicle damage waiver (usually 10-20k). My own medical insurance would cover my own health.

HOWEVER, no one seems to cover liability? My main concern is if I injure someone else (bodilt harm) or their property, I would be 100% on the hook. The last thing I want is to be on the hook for a $200k surgery and millions of dollars of pain & suffering lawsuits.

What's my best option here? Extra insurance through the rental company (probably expensive), 3rd party auto insurance somehow? (don't know if this exists), or some kind of generic travel insurance that might have liability coverage?

I'm in my 30's so rates hopefully won't be too bad, but this is a gap I've always worried about.

Kansas - My parents kept my brother on their auto insurance and he moved out. They kept him on the policy and did not tell the insurance company, then someone crashed into him without insurance, and now he's making a claim. Parents are really nervous.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 12:19 PM PDT

    Location: Kansas

How likely is it that the insurance will investigate into his home address? He was parked and got slammed. The individual did not have insurance so my parents are checking if he had uninsured motorist coverage as well.

They are quite worried about insurance company investigating into the number of actual household members. He has been moved out for several months. Is it a high risk that they will actually find out? After this incident, everyone definitely thinks it's a good idea for him to get on his own policy as well, but will he be at risk for the new insurance company finding out about this as well? Should he wait a while to pursue a new policy with a different company?

    Help with California Notary!

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 11:59 AM PDT

Hi, I'm trying to obtain Notary in California. I was guided to a list of pages for "approved vendors" for the education course. I'm unsure whether to take 3 hours is sufficient?

And for fingerprinting, if I took P&C and got it done, do I need to do it again?

    TIA!

    Forced Total

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 10:33 AM PDT

I recently was involved in an accident where my car was approaching total-loss level damage, however the insurance company has elected to repair the damage. In the interim, I've found a car that I like better and want to switch into it. Is there a way to request that my old car be totaled, or is it solely damage-based?

#Virginia Hospital says they couldn't do the rape kit, and now I have an emergency room bill

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 09:05 AM PDT

I originally posted this in r/legaladvice and was advised to post here for additional help. On August 24, I was raped. I called my insurance on September 5 to ask about a rape kit after a friend suggested it to me. I spoke with a lady in benefits and she said that they wouldn't be able to cover it because I hadn't met my deductible for the year yet. I got transferred several times because I was distraught and eventually I spoke with a registered nurse who said that she definitely recommends the kit. I asked if I could even still get it since it had been so many days and she said "yes definitely, there may be injuries and tears that you can't see that you don't even know about." So I've got a registered nurse saying I can get the kit. I get transferred over again and I speak with a person who works as a therapist and he says that the previous people I spoke with likely don't deal with this on the day to day, but rape kits shouldn't have any out of pocket cost at all. So I should be covered. He directs me to a rape hotline and just to make sure I get it on my insurance since the calls are supposed to be recorded, I ask him again if the rape kit will cost me. He says no.

I call the rape hotline and they ask me where I am, and say the nearest emergency room that I can go to. I go to the emergency room and when I get there, they say that since it had been longer than 5 days, they can't do the forensic exam, but they can still do STD testing. I know that I can't afford to have the testing done out of pocket and I'm frustrated that I'm going to get billed for just staying in the emergency room. I wait to get the bill and the very first one I get says that it is overdue, and is due on November 21. I call the number on the bill ask why it says it's overdue. She just says that the first one must have gotten lost in the mail. I also ask if I can get some more time just so I can speak with the insurance. At first they don't budge but then I let them know of the situation and they say as a courtesy they will give me a 30 day hold. On November 28, I will need to start paying them, essentially. They also ask me to get an Explanation of Benefits or something from my insurance. When I speak with my insurance, they say that the bill they got said that I got an exam. I say I did not get it, since it wouldn't be covered. Before I can even get to the Explanation of Benefits, they say they need to speak with the hospital and say that the exam wasn't covered. I ask them if they can call them and I be in a conference call because I don't want to be passed off until I have to pay this stupid bill.

They say they will keep me on the line while they call. I wait for 5 minutes on hold and they say that they can't contact the number I gave them. I ask them to give them a call and would they give me a call when they do. They agree. I ask them if I can follow up with them tomorrow. They say I need to at least give them a day, so call them on Wednesday (Halloween). I was also asked to follow up with the lady from the hospital just to let her know that I have contacted my insurance. I followed up with them and they just said they would notate it and await the call.

Do I really have to start paying on November 28 if the insurance can't get it figured out? How do I hold them accountable for saying that the rape kit would be covered? What happens if November 28 rolls around and it's still not figured out? I have disputed a charge on my boyfriend's behalf and they said I wasn't even held accountable for the charge until the dispute was resolved. They also said that they could only offer me a 30 day hold once, they can't do it again. What is my best move from here? I really don't want to pay for a bill that I was told I wouldn't have to pay for a service I never received.

TLDR a registered nurse from my insurance said I could receive a rape kit (which is covered) but when I got to the hospital they said that after 5 days they can't do it and now I have a hospital bill with no services. What do I do?

What to claim on flood damage?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 05:03 AM PDT

We live in a rented appartment and have renter's insurance.

The other day, we had flooding that resulted in our entire appartment being in 3-4 inches of water. The claims adjuster came, took some pictures and gave us a form to fill out on what we're claiming...

We're struggling to know just what we should be claiming...

I.e, our couch, the water did not reach the fabric but the wooden legs were sitting in water. We dried them out as best as we could... but that must've compromised the integrity of it right? Now it's maybe a risk for Mold too?

What about my gaming PC... it seemed like I had lucked out. After drying everything out, it seemed like it was fine... but it's unexpectedly shutoff on me... What if it's not claimed then later we discover it actually was damaged by the flood...
