Client owes me bad debt but wants me to work again. Advice needed?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 12:56 PM PDT

I started a company that I would still consider a hobby company. Long story short, I fly drones for mostly realtors. Local branch of huge real estate firm hired me. I've done two-three jobs. All went great paid on time etc. client loved the product. On third job after I provided the product client went dark and I didnt get paid. After many attempts and many months (probably six months), client reaches out, is super apologetic saying got super busy, can I get drone work for them for again.

Now, heres where I need advice. I want to re set expectations in 2019. I went through an accounting class recently that talked about early payment incentives like 2/10 net 30. (Accounting lingo), or I can do other things like invoice due abd paid in full before product is given to client.

Either way, I'm a one man band and my client is a giant. So they know their is a power imbalance. But I want to make sure I make the right decision for my small business, because it will also apply to the 7-10 other clients I have.

    Advice?

New Business - Australia - Web Hosting & Domain Help.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 12:40 AM PDT

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post. I am looking to start a small business selling mostly handmade natural items. The business will be solely online to begin with and I intend to have a physical retail store set-up within a year or two if it takes off. (It currently only has a small Instagram following).

I have my ABN and business name registered already and am looking to start an online store but am giving myself a headache trying to work out domain hosting.

I've been looking mostly at godaddy and hostpapa because they are fairly cheap but I'm wondering why/how they are so much cheaper than others and what they don't offer that I probably need but haven't considered.

I'm also wondering if I should just set up an Etsy, eBay or shopify account instead of an actual webpage but I kind of feel like they're not as professional or legitimate.

Anyone who has started a similar business in Australia, I would really appreciate any insight or advice you can offer. I don't want to rush into this and make a mess of it. Thank you.

Anyone here run a small food cart or food truck?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 06:44 AM PDT

I'm sorry if this is redundant in advance, I am new here. I am opening up an Italian Ice cart/stand operation next year and was just looking for tips on how people who have done it before. So far, I have been approved on all my Health Department needs, which is the hardest part it seems like to get past before you can start the operation. I still need to secure funding, I won't need that much, I do have excellent credit and collateral I can put up. I plan on hitting up mainly fairs and festivals, plus there is tons of community events and concerts where I live here in Central VA. Besides that, I plan on just being anywhere and everywhere I can possibly be to gain revenue. That being said, can anyone give me some good sound advise on how I can make this a business that can grow and prosper? Thanks!

    Accounting Software Recommendations?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 10:43 PM PDT

My bf and I are both self employed so we have two businesses and personal finances that need to be kept separate, but interact often. I'm looking for software that will allow us to keep the three separate, but transfer between them and work with all three seamlessly. I'd appreciate any recommendations, TIA

    Shipment Managing Software Required

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 05:40 AM PDT

Hello all. In our business we rely on imports and on average we get maybe 5-6 shipments a month of 20-40 containers.

I essentially want to know if there is a software of any kind that allows me to enter the details of our consignment along with bank related stuff (i.e. LCs) and can give me constant alerts if something is missing or overdue. I know it can be done on excel but that's tedious.

I'm obviously willing to pay for something as long as it fits our budget.

    Thanks.

What are the steps in registering your business?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 10:16 PM PDT

I have this idea that I'd like to grow into a small business. However, I don't know where I'm supposed to get started.

Should I seek the help of a lawyer and explain to them that I want help in registering my business and filing all the legal paperwork? Or is it possible to do that myself? Would appreciate some input.

    Online sales, marketing and growing.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 09:04 PM PDT

I tried to reply with some questions on the other posts on this topic but the comments are shut down.

I have a micro, nano super small barely existent small business. (www.angryporc.com) I make and sell hot sauce. Locally it's easy. I walk into a brick and mortar, hit them with a few samples and sell a few cases. But the margins aren't high enough to drive around all day selling wholesale to stores. I intended to sell online. Put together a website, did all the things, now I am up and running. Nothing is moving though. Google Ads and Facebook ads don't push anything to the site and what people do visit the site are on and off in 5 min. I looked into Amazon accounts Etsy and EBay. But these guys hit you for a percentage. By the time I pay to use their platform and the credit card fees I am back to making the same as driving around selling cases. I expected it to grow slowly but it's been three months. I have only 5 online sales. What am I missing?

I am looking for advice from experienced online sellers.

I am also looking for subreddits where it is okay to mention my business without getting band. I get that people don't want you advertising but I think it's helpful to mention the business when in a discussion. If you could link to them here that would be great.

I would also like to hear from some Etsy, Amazon etc, retailers. Does this strategy get better over time?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, cheers.

Anyone own a blue collar small business?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 11:15 AM PDT

My business partner and I are in the process of launching a service company specialized in low voltage work. Specifically security alarms, cameras, access control, and networking type stuff. We have about 10 years of combined experience and are both certified alarm techs.

I have operated a clothing printing business now for about 5 years but I guess my question is what individuals did to grow their local blue collar business?

Currently listening to podcasts about the topic and blue collar gold by Mark Stoner. Also trying to build our website ASAP so our current customers can refer others to us.

    Thanks for any help!

Small private company offered option to buy stock. Return is not as good as overall market. How should I approach this?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 08:42 PM PDT

I have the option to buy about $50,000 worth of company stock. I understand this is reflective of my performance but based on the metrics the return might be better elsewhere.

Am I obligated to buy in or should I not? Will they think less of me if I say no? Obviously there's more than just an annual return to think about.

Is there a budget-friendly check scanner on the market?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 03:36 PM PDT

Historically we have used our bank's mobile deposit application on our cell phones to deposit checks (we receive anywhere from 10-50 checks per month).

It is becoming tedious doing this with a cell phone since a call interrupts the process, but in my (admittedly quick) research it seemed check scanners are around $300 and up.

Is there a more budget friendly option available? All I need it to be able to do is scan a check and allow me to submit it to my bank - ideally all through my PC.

How to verify company name isn't violating trademarks?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 07:20 PM PDT

I'm starting a business with my wife and we have come up with a name, logo, and some ideas of how to market to potential customers.

As we go through the process of establishing an actual LLC, we've come up with a few questions that we're hoping others can help answer based on experience.

    1. How do we ensure our name and logo aren't violating someone else's trademark or other IP? Is there a database or registry to search against other than just thorough googling?
    2. If there's a company with a similar name, or the same name but different industry, how do we know if our name is different enough? For instance, we are in language education and there's a food/beverage brand that's close to our name. I feel like that should be fine but unclear on where the line is.

I'm guessing a lot of you had similar issues when you first started, so how did you handle it?

    Thanks!

Do We Have Any Funding Options?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 06:45 PM PDT

Here's the deal: I work in our family business as of 6 months ago. It's a small family-owned HVAC company that's been in business since 2005. Gross annual revenue is ~$280k. My parents aren't the most business savvy folks, so they haven't managed their finances very well in the past. Their credit scores are finally back up around 630-650.

Meanwhile, after college I went to work in finance and have been very finance-conscious. My credit score is 750, I have about $25k in available credit limits, and outside of student loans I don't have any other debt.

We were straightening their finances and the business out, and as of now they're at about $3k in various credit card and business financing debts. We don't have a physical business location, and that has hurt our business with attracting candidates because I think they just feel a little sketched out. Additionally, we bought a new van recently that has no branding on it whatsoever. Focusing on paying debts down has also depleted any payroll we had set up, and now we're hitting our slow season.

By my estimation, $12-15k would fix many things immensely. $3k could pay off the existing debts - the various payments on these things would just about cover the monthly cost of renting an office/warehouse space (currently $750/mo). $3k would handle the design/installation of a new vehicle wrap, which would establish some branding/exposure that we currently don't have. Another $3-4k could pay the first 2-3 & last months rent on the office/warehouse space and cover utilities for a couple months during our slow season. The final $3-4k would be able to pad payroll.

We've been considering moving from a sole proprietorship (in my dad's name) to an LLC for some additional protections, so what I'm wondering is:

    A. What options could we possibly have for funding based on our current situation? Would it be wise to do this to begin with? I'm thinking with adding a location to increase efficiency, attract better candidates, increasing exposure with our branding, and we're also getting licensed for another state to do work there to expand our market, I think this could be a massive boon. I'm also directly involved in the business, so I may not be considering all angles. I'd need something that we could pay monthly that wouldn't be exorbitant initially, so ideally something that has a semi-long repayment term.

    B. Would we be better off doing the LLC with myself as a partner, or even more so just making me the owner? Or would that throw off lenders because I just became owner? I'm wondering if I even need to with his current credit score, or are we close enough where it may be better off to work on getting his score up another 20 or so points.

    Thanks in advance!

    Employee health insurance

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 01:41 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I have a small business with 4 employees.

2 full time and 2 part time.

I just took over this business this month and am now the 100% owner.

We currently provide health insurance coverage to one of our full time employees and pay the other full time employee an extra amount per month as a benefit, because she is on her husbands insurance.

This benefit is just a fraction of what the health insurance would cost me.

She is renewing it right now with her husbands company and they asked 'does your place of employment offer health insurance'....She said if she answers yes she will get kicked off of it so I will have to take it over and if she says no then she can stay on it.

I am really in the dark here on what is actually required of me to do for my employees. Any guidance on this situation would be great.

    Thanks

Does your business accept checks? Why or why not?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 04:28 PM PDT

Your answer may differ depending on your industry and target customer base. For me, an owner of a web development and marketing agency, checks have done nothing but cause headaches. For this reason, I stopped accepting them within the first year of being in business.

What headaches you may ask? Mostly, getting paid on time. With online payment processing I can get paid same day as sending the invoice, with a check, not so much. Since my work is done remotely, I rarely see a client in person so receiving a check can mean days, if not a week or two of waiting on mail to arrive. Not to mention the times people have accidentally wrote me a check for the wrong amount, misspelled mine or my business' name, the check bounced, etc.

    What are your thoughts?

Best POS for small grocery store?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 03:39 PM PDT

Does anyone have suggestions for a good POS system for a grocery store? I've been told that CounterPoint is pretty much crap for grocery stores and is more suited to other businesses. I'm a bit weary from Clover horror stories out there too.

Basically, we would need registers capable of doing credit, debit, and EBT transactions. A weighing scale for our butcher shop. Also, integration with Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2017 (Windows). Managing customers' A/R (we have a old school store that still lets people charge on credit) is a plus.

Question: What software do you use to run your business operations and marketing?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 03:28 PM PDT

I run a small ecommerce business on shopify. I know there are add-ons and integrations like Stripe and Mailchimp to leverage payments processing and emails, and run other business operations. While these integrations make it easy to run a small business, it doesn't meet everyone's need. For me, I don't have a good view of my customers and website visitors like what they do or aren't doing. I can't really use any customer segmentation to, for example, create automating marketing based on the customer segment.

Do any of you guys have similar problems, in that the technologies we have available doesn't necessarily meet our needs? What problems do you guys have and what software have used to solve your problems?

Just joined! Having trouble making progress in my business(es)

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 03:07 PM PDT

So excited to find this sub!

I started a small consulting business in April, and cut my regular 9-5 down to part time and 90% working from home. I also teach on Skillshare for some extra funding, and it's enjoyable.

My problem is actually making noticeable progress on anything. Every time I decide to get a Skillshare class done, my corporate job calls me up and asks me to max out my hours for the week on a big project. Then once that's done I'm tired and want a break/need to catch up on laundry/finally buy cat food.

And then I sit down to work on my consulting website, and the same thing happens, or I end up traveling somewhere last minute, and once again I'm behind on everything I want to get done for myself.

I've thought about cutting out Skillshare, but it gives me an immediate return on investment and I really enjoy it. I can't quit my part time job yet because I have no consulting clients.m so I would starve. Am I just lazy?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I’ve been using my personal credit card to pay business expenses (really bad, I know). These expenses are clear business expenses - is there any way I can put the cost and interest as business tax expenses when filing my taxes?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 08:23 AM PDT

I have been running a start up for a few years now. Things have been REALLY hard and over the past 2 years, I've been forced to take out a personal loan and max out my credit cards to support the business. With the end of the year approaching, I'm now wondering if I can include the expenses I've made through the credit card and personal loan and the interest charges on the loan and my personal credit card as a business expense to get the deduction and offset the income I receive from my professional job? Please I know I shouldn't be doing this, and plan to not do so anymore. Thank you!
