[CAN] Message to CFE Writers From a Grizzled CPA, CA – Congrats, But Don't Stop Here Posted: 30 Nov 2018 06:01 AM PST Today, good or bad, will be one of a handful of days that you will remember forever. If you pass, congratulations! If you need to write again, please have faith in your abilities – it's a gut punch, but it just wasn't your year and you'll show them. It's not uncommon for people on the Honour Roll to be repeat writers - just don't stop here. When you pass, it's validation of three good things you have going for you: 1) Your aptitude – the CFE is not easy; it humbles many, yet you succeeded 2) Your perseverance – the past X months were no doubt a grind on top of life's other distractions 3) Your team that helped you prep and your support system outside of the office These 3 assets do not vanish and in fact, have been strengthened by the CFE process. Continue to use these assets or they will be gone. Please, please, promise to continue to learn and grow. I passed a long time ago [I was in the first group in my firm to use a laptop to write the UFE] and I've seen far too many CAs take their foot off the gas after passing/designation and opportunities have passed them by. You will be asked soon by your firm what direction you want to take, so it would be wise to think about this path (not today, but soon) and research what additional skills/certifications you can pick up to get you to your goals. Interested in Tax? In-depth Tax Course / Canadian Tax Foundation. Want to improve Public Speaking? Toastmasters / Dale Carnegie. Want to give back? CPA Mentoring or Junior Achievement. Just don't stop. Today is such an overwhelmingly-positive day and you can easily spread the good cheer – I encourage you to sincerely thank your study team, your tutorial leader, your mentor, your Manager, your SO and even your parents – yes, it was you who wrote and worried, but these other people likely helped in some way. As a parent and Mentor, I would be thrilled be recognized for my small contribution and I'm going to blubber like a baby when I see the name of the gentleman I'm mentoring on that list this morning. Congratulations all, well done. Please take the mic and I'll get off my soapbox now :) [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:06 AM PST This is my first attempt. I passed day 1 but failed day 2&3. I feel so devastated and crying my eyes out in my bed right now. I feel like a fucking loser the fact that I failed my exams. I totally should've study a bit harder but I didn't. I don't know what to do at this point other than drink my face off. 🤢🤢 [link] [comments]

How hard is it to get into a mid-tier (GT, BDO, CROWE, RSM)? and are these firms good? Posted: 30 Nov 2018 12:20 PM PST also, what are the pros of working for a mid-tier? would the exit opportunities be comparable to big 4? Thanks guys! [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Nov 2018 09:59 AM PST Currently on the bench at the office, feeling the blues of being the newest senior. I got jobs that have stalled because LOLPBCs. Every other senior is up to their neck in work, but won't/can't pawn anything off to me. Whatever. With all this free time, I've been finalizing my itinerary for my vacation to Colorado next month, and further plotting my escape to Colorado (EY ain't got shit on my Vision 2020). How has everyone else's week been? [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:22 PM PST My second testlet didn't seem to get much harder, at least in my opinion. How bad of a sign is this? I flagged a few on the first testlet to come back to, but didn't feel like I did absolutely horrible on the first testlet. SIMS, I left half of one blank, but for the most part I felt pretty OK with how I performed on SIMS all things considered. Was trending 81 on NINJA MCQ before hand. Have any of you received a comparable second testlet and passed? [link] [comments]
I'm at a crossroads. Can anyone make a convincing case to go into accounting? Posted: 30 Nov 2018 04:51 PM PST Short story: I was let go from my IT job recently and am now back in school. I'm pivoting careers and have been deciding between a career in software engineering or accounting. I have a healthy interest in both and can see myself working in both professions. While my original intent was to go into software (due to my IT background), I have heard that software jobs are hard to break into and can sometimes undergo layoffs. After being hit with one, I definitely would like to avoid that scenario again. By contrast, I have recently discovered that my alma mater offers a post-grad six month crash course in accounting. It gives you enough credits to take the CPA and is a target school for Big 4 firms. From what the program representative told me, I'd have a good shot at getting recruited. My thought process is, software engineering makes more money than accounting (big tech firm pay vs. big accounting firm pay) and has an easier lifestyle (casual dress, free food). But accounting has more job stability and a LOT of people on this sub claim that accounting is the path to becoming a controller, CFO, or chief executive. While I don't have those kinds of lofty ambitions, it is definitely attractive to go to work everyday and know that you're building your career towards something. As someone who works in the accounting field, have any of you been in my shoes? What was your decision making process to go into accounting? Note: I have an unrelated liberal arts bachelor's degree (which I regret, but moving forward from it). [link] [comments] |
