    We’re in hiring limbo

    Posted: 07 Oct 2018 06:45 PM PDT

We own a small home-based contracting business. We're doing well enough that we have calls and emails daily and schedule bids or jobs nearly every day. Up to this point, the two of us (married couple) have been sharing this responsibility. It's just not working anymore. He's too busy doing the actual work and I have a full time job and can't be pulled away most of the day. My job is our primary (and stable) source of income, so quitting is not an option (plus I love what I do). We're in this weird limbo because we're starting to need help (e.g. an office assistant) but we don't have the profit margin yet to pay for an actual office or an additional employee. What options do we have? Has anyone else been in this weird place?

    CRM Advice

    Posted: 07 Oct 2018 04:43 PM PDT

I'm looking for an easy to use and inexpensive CRM for a start-up business. The main features I need are being able to use it with a few different emails and track clients (contacts) that I've been in touch with.

Has anyone else had trouble finding a graphic designer?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2018 06:46 PM PDT

    Hey all!

I own a small eCommerce business and needs some graphic design work done. I've been having some difficulty finding and artist who's style suits my needs. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, how did you end up finding someone who was a good fit for you (or not finding a good designer at all)?

    Thanks!

What fee should I charge for my first freelance marketing job?

    Posted: 08 Oct 2018 03:42 AM PDT

So I'm fresh out of university with a degree in Media Production, specialising in digital media & marketing. The other day, I was in a local (cat) caffe that I had recently heard was struggling and facing closure. So whilst in there, I was thinking about how their business could really benefit from a new marketing strategy such clearer branding, more prominent social media presence and advertisements for local radio & Youtube. So I emailed them and explained who I am and that I believe I can help them further their reach and that I could do this first by creating a plan of action, then by helping to create the various media elements that would be needed to complete it. They got back to me and liked the idea and I am now due to meet with them on Wednesday to discuss this further.

My question is, how much should I charge for this service? Should I stay low as this is my first attempt at something such as this? I am confident in my abilities to carry out the plan, however have no idea about how much I should be paid for such a service.

Better to buy out an existing business or start from scratch?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2018 09:30 PM PDT

There is a business similar to the one I want to start close to me I think the area and store front is a workable location (decent traffic, accessible, easily found, and near a high concentration of my ideal demographic of customer). Despite this the store doesn't seem to do crazy business. Seemly it does well enough there's always a few people there and the business itself has a relatively low operating cost so I'm assuming it does well enough to keep the doors open. However i think that it has the potential to do much better, and I believe that I know how to reach that potential (different marketing approach and set up. The location has most of the hardware necessary to run the way I want it to and if it does well I think it would be a good launch pad to my final vision of the store front. My question is is it worth approaching the current owner with a serious intent to negotiate for the sale of the business or is there some hidden danger in buying out an existing business that i may be overlooking? If he is willing to sell what kinds of things should i expect to have access to during the negotiations (sales reports etc.) which will help me establish a fair value to buy for? It's not owned by a corporation so I would be dealing directly with the owner of the establishment.

Questions on your type of business and startup capital employed

    Posted: 07 Oct 2018 11:08 PM PDT

    Hi all,

This sub has been extremely beneficial to me and I thank everybody for being so active and sharing info and ideas for the benefit for everybody.

My question is this: what type of business are you in and how much startup capital did you originally employ not including any expansion capital?

I am wondering this because between me and my partner we are about 45k in and are very close to turning a profit on a monthly and quarterly basis. I want to say there is a light at the end of the tunnel, but I also don't want to continuing to dump everything I have into an unprofitable business. I would love to hear your situation and what your first two years were like.

We are a food based business that manufactures a product for wholesale (waiting to get paid is killing us) and we also do a lot of catering for the same product. Located in TX.

Created a prototype for an interactive mall map, tried to sell it, failed. Looking for what else I can try.

    Posted: 07 Oct 2018 03:33 PM PDT

I was inspired by this post to try and create an application for a specific industry. While at the mall, I was browsing through the directory and thought to myself it would be way easier to find the store I was looking for if I could just type the name in. This gave me the idea for an interactive mall directory.

I went home and coded a prototype in a few days thinking it would be easier to sell to malls if they could see an example of what I was trying to sell them rather than just an idea. You can view the prototype here: http://tripleadesigns.net/cordova_mall/app/

I also drafted a proposal detailing the benefits of having an interactive mall map. You can view it here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/5jpsoudkda92dmy/proposal_2_reddit.txt?dl=0

I went online and gathered the emails of various mall managers and sent them my proposal. Out of all the emails I sent out, I got a reply back from one mall who seemed interested; but after a few emails back and forth I heard nothing from them. In the process of contacting malls around the country, I found that most malls were owned by this one company: Simon Property Group. I tried contacting their corporate hq to see if I could work with them but didn't get any response.

I thought the idea was good one, maybe it wasn't. Basically now I'm looking for any tips on what else I can try or what other industries might benefit from something like this; anything I could pivot to.

Is there a service that provides both in person card payments and online payments?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2018 05:41 PM PDT

I am taking over a small archery business soon. I do same day paid lessons, prepay for a month lessons, and prepaid / same day pay tournaments.

The old business only does in person card / check / cash payments. Is there one service that allows both online and in person card payments? I am trying to get my website up and running before I officially take over. And from a little bit of searching I can only find online only OR in person only.

I need a form creation app that still looks professional when printed.

    Posted: 07 Oct 2018 07:38 PM PDT

Looking for suggestions. I played around with a few form creation/design apps before deciding on JotForm (still in the free phase for now, bonus). I have since created several forms: some that clients will fill out online, some that doctors will fill out as a referral to us, and some that we will fill out when at the client's home. The process was easy and I was happy until I went to print a referral or medical note and it came out with just random lines of text and no real formatting at all (completely different than my form when viewed online?). All of these will go into a medical record, so I need them to be orderly and professional. Am I doing something wrong? Should I be uploading them into a spreadsheet? What do you use for your forms? Thanks in advance!

    Advice on consignment shop.

    Posted: 07 Oct 2018 06:47 PM PDT

Hello, I've been researching and looking into the idea of opening a consignment shop. I am in an area that I believe has a demand for luxury items for all buyers (think LA,NYC,CHI etc). I am going back and forth on having a hybrid shop of being a boutique (brand new items) as well consignment for brand new and used (designer wear, high end Jordan's etc).

MY QUESTION: I have heard that selling used clothing and accessories can be a huge liability because I would be on the hook if they have bed bugs or something. I have looked things up but can't find any solid information, all I am getting is apps for selling your stuff.

Thank you for any and all information and insight!

Facebook and Instagram did a case study on our brand, saintchic.com . The case study will be poted on their site. How can I leverage the fact they did a case study on my small business? Thinking about bringing on a partner so I'm wondering if this is attractive to potential partners and investors.

Can i have a product that i want independent sales reps to sell for me using this model:

    Posted: 07 Oct 2018 08:04 PM PDT

Can i have a product that i want independent sales reps to sell for me using this model:

hypothetically the product costs me 4.50 and i want the reps to buy it from me for 5.00 and i want them to sell it for 20

can i get people to do this for me by offering a 30% share of the profit?

meaning can i use this logic:

    20.00 (retail) -5 (cost of goods) = 15.00 offer profit split of 30% to reps = 4.50

they paid me 5 for the product and sold it for 20 and i give them a commission of 4.50 PLUS i give them the 5$ back. so essentially they buy it for 5 and pocket 9.50

    the company pockets 10.50

and we recruit other people to sell under us TO THE PUBLIC not to each other and give a percentage of profits FROM THE COMPANY to the next reps down the line... can we do this?

Looking for package & product printing advice

    Posted: 07 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT

I've created a new product and I've taken the design and development about far as I can before I test the market. I'm launching this new e-commerce business in party supplies sector within the next 30 days. I have received great feedback with my mock ups and I would like test multiple sku s on my Amazon account.

My product is mostly refined but since I'm still in R&D I would like to print my own packaging and product until perfected, My competition is China and the quality of their prints seems to be subpar.

I'm looking for a cheap printing option to print my own cardstock glossy packaging folds to go over my plastic packages. I also will need to print some of my novelty thin cardboard items, which again may slightly change as I perfect the product.

Should I get a laser to save money on ink or should I go inkjet to get better quality packaging? What will be my best go to market printer for these items?

Note: I have plotter for cutting and fold creases. I'm looking for 10x23 print options.

Finding foreign buyers as a handicrafts exporter

    Posted: 07 Oct 2018 10:00 AM PDT

I want to export moroccan handicrafts (rugs, bags, lamps...) but I don't know how to find buyers (retailers/distributors). How can I go about finding potential buyers on the internet (e.g. which b2b websites)? For example if I want to find Korean buyers (I don't know korean) how do I proceed?

Starting or growing a business while working a 9-5 or tight job schedule

    Posted: 07 Oct 2018 08:10 AM PDT

Hi everyone, first time posting in this subreddit so hopefully I get some helpful advice. Anyways, I work full time but don't make much and one of my goals in life is to build a business to give me and hopefully my family a great life. Like most people I'm not a fan of the corporate lifestyle and although I like my job I'm not living my dream. I Know that most business fail but I feel like if I don't try I'll live a life of regret. With that being said, business owners or inspiring business owners how did you get your side hustle to replace your full time income? How is it possible to get things that need to be done during normal business hours taken care of?I'm currently trying to start a cleaning business while working full time but I have no clue how to get any clients since I work 9-5. The plan was to clean on the weekends and eventually hire people as I grow but so far I can't get anyone to book me on the weekends. I've tried advertising on Craigslist but only got two serious potential clients, who ended up not booking me. Everyone else were just spammers and weirdos. I chose cleaning because I have experience with it, but at this point I'm not sure if I should just pick another type of business that fits better with my work schedule.

TLDR: having trouble getting my side business to fit around job schedule. Need advice on growing a side hustle around job and better ways to market to my potential clients.
