NY Times - Housing Market Slows as Rising Prices Outpace Wages Posted: 30 Sep 2018 03:03 PM PDT Interesting article in the NY times. What I found so concerning from an investing/bubble perspective was the section about how people are not trading up any longer because higher interest rates mean a larger payment even if the homeowner has more equity... With two children and a third due in January, the Wiedels would like to trade up. With the rise in home prices some renovations, the house they bought for $350,000 could be worth more than $500,000. But the family borrowed at about 3.5 percent three years ago. Today, they would pay closer to 5 percent. "Even if we just saw houses at the same price, we'd have to pay more" every month, he said. If "the US sneezes, the world catches a cold," so how exactly does diversification insulate risk? Posted: 30 Sep 2018 11:49 AM PDT Essentially, in the event of a US Crash, how would these three ETF portfolios comparatively fare:
It is my understanding that even Portfolio 3 would not meaningfully insulate risk - so why diversify and endure the lower average returns of Foreign Market ETFs? Many are even in the red on a 6-month scale, staring down the barrel of trade tensions. To a novice such as myself, as an entry point - these foreign market diversifications appear on the face to be "risks", as opposed to a means to mitigate risk. Thanks to anyone who can clarify my error in thinking! [link] [comments] |
What is the intrinsic value of a stock without dividends? Posted: 30 Sep 2018 11:09 PM PDT So as I understand it there are two ways to make money from stocks: dividends or capital gains. But how do you get capital gains without dividends? What, fundamentally, then becomes the intrinsic value of the stock to allow for capital gains? Obviously the ostensible answer here is that ownership has inherent value, but I feel like that's only true if you're looking to become a majority shareholder. For example, what makes people pay $2000/share for amazon? Can everyone just buy it because there's an implicit underlying assumption that one day someone will come along looking to become a majority shareholder? I hope this makes sense. It's kind of hard to explain [link] [comments] |
Periodic investments VS Monthly investments Posted: 30 Sep 2018 10:57 PM PDT Hi All! I've been investing my money into my ETF/stock portfolio for a little over a year now and would like some advice. I am still very new to the world of investing. When I started, I invested around $10,000. I can comfortably save $2,500 every month, however, instead of investing monthly, I saved up and invested $15,000 6 months later. And another $15,000 6 months after that. I've been reading up more and more into monthly investments and DCA approach and wanted to know what are the key differences between investing every 6 months vs investing monthly. Are my returns going to take a big hit in the long run? Appreciate any advice and wisdom given and thanks in advance! Edit: spelling [link] [comments] |

China cancels security talks with United States Posted: 30 Sep 2018 07:55 PM PDT China has canceled a security meeting with U.S. Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis that had been planned for October, a senior U.S. official said on Sunday, days after a top Chinese official said there was no reason to panic over tensions between the countries. "The tension is escalating, and that could prove to be dangerous to both sides," the official said. [link] [comments] |

Buying Bonds: Resources on understanding Bond Quotes? Posted: 30 Sep 2018 11:51 PM PDT Currently I use E*Trade as my platform of choice. Currently sitting on 35K+ cash. I would like to clip some coupons on 3 month t-(bills/bonds/notes) for a safer 2+ percent. The problem is I don't know how to read a bond quote. Is there a tutorial to buying bonds so that I don't make a mistake when ordering? Added info: I don't want to switch platforms as I developed a python options analysis tool using their API, I know the fees are higher. [link] [comments] |
What do you think about JD stock? Posted: 30 Sep 2018 07:38 PM PDT I am a growth stock investor. Fears about the trade war and JD CEO's scandal in the US have made JD.com's stock tank recently. Overall, I think JD seems like a strong company, with their massive distribution network being the crown jewel. I see a lot of potential in them over the next decade. Although Alibaba gets all the hype, JD actually does more revenue in China than Alibaba in ecommerce. Sure, earnings are slim, but that is because they are pouring money into automation, R&D, and improving their distribution network. My question is, is it time to buy? Am I missing some massive future headwind for JD.com, because this looks too good to be true. What have I not considered here? I am interested in long term growth, so if we could keep the discussion oriented on that, I would really appreciate it. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
