Involved in minor accident. How long does it take for them to file a claim against my insurance?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 08:56 PM PDT

Today in CA, I was waiting to turn right and I lifted my foot off the brake. Then I hit the person in front of me at about less than 5mph. We got out to looked at the damage. There was no visible damage to his car (lexus rx) but my front bumper( toyota camry) pain had paint damage . We exchanged information and he said he would have his car checked out and that he would make a claim if there was any damage underneath his car.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them? How long does it take for them to file a claim ? Will my insurance company call me as soon as they get a claim? I'm an anxious person and this minor accident is giving me so much grief .

Oddball question: Insured's employee stopped to help vehicle that hit object on road, now that person/their insurance is trying to blame employee for the item on the road

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 03:52 PM PDT

So like I said, this is an oddball question. I've been an agent for 4 years and am not entirely sure how I should've addressed it.

Claim information: My insured's employee was driving on a 2-lane highway and met a car as they were about to hit an object (a shovel) in the middle of the road. The employee turned around to help the woman in the car and the shovel was lodged in the underbelly of the car but it didn't cause much damage. He helped the women made sure it was safe to drive home or to a mechanic to check for more damage. She thanked him for the help and they parted ways. No big deal, right? Three months later my insured is getting a legal letter from USAAs subrogation department stating that the employee lost the shovel on the road and that my insured's company has to pay for the damage. He initially refused. They then said they'd reduce the amount he needed to pay from like $1000 to $800. This is when he called me and I said not to pay.

I called the number and spoke to the lawyer for USAA and he stated that because my insured's employee had other tools in the vehicle they determined he was the one that dropped the shovel. The employee vehemently denies having a shovel with him that day and I do know both the insured/employee well and I trust their word.

The vehicle the employee was driving is not a company vehicle. Insured does not have hired auto coverage (I've advised him in the past that he should add it on). Is this a GL claim? I don't have his GL policy but I told him to make a call there and potentially file a claim so they can have someone to defend against USAA.

Any advice on how this should be handled? It's basically a he said/she said situation with zero proof my insured's employee caused the damage.

    Dental insurance - wisdom teeth

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 09:02 PM PDT

New to adulting here; I live in California if that makes any difference. I need to have my wisdom teeth (all 4) extracted and I don't have dental insurance. Is it worth it for me to 1) buy it and wait the 6+ month waiting period or 2) better for me to find a low cost dentist (and risk a shoddy job) that takes payments?

Background: My wisdom teeth have been growing in for the past couple of years and haven't been bothering me but I figured I should take them out sooner than later. The last time I went to the dentist (2011? Don't judge me) I got an xray that showed the wisdom teeth are growing in sideways. I used to have braces in early high school and the wisdom teeth are gradually shifting my previously straight teeth. :(

Please suggest any dental insurance companies you'd recommend if you think option 1 is the way to go!

State farm cancelling my policy I signed for a month ago, and raising my monthly price

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 11:54 AM PDT

Basically what the title says. I got my policy through State farm when I bought my new car a month ago. We signed for $118 a month, and I get an email from my agent saying they're cancelling my policy and raising the price $70 for "Star Rating".

Is there anything I can do about this, or do I just need to find someone else?

How to approach people IRL about A quote

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 06:42 PM PDT

So I'm not sure if this sub is for clients of an insurance company, or just insurance in general, if this is the wrong sub lemme know and I'll remove this post...

    Also I AM NOT SOLICITING

So basically I work for a insurance company and I also attend university, I realize since I go to UNI I have a unique advantage when it comes to networking. I'm doing my best to try and get people I've been speaking with to run through an auto quote (with some luck so far) but I want to do a bit more. I want to approach people who are sitting around waiting, does anybody have any suggestions on how to go about this? I don't want to just run up and be like "Howdy, want a insurance quote?" but at the same time I don't want to waste a whole lot of time with chit chat since I have limited free time. I obviously understand that not everybody will want a quote on the spot, but do you folks have any ideas on how to get the ball rolling?

[NJ] Should I report damage I did on my car while parking?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 05:14 PM PDT

Car is a 2009 BMW 3 Series which was in good condition with about 75,000 miles. I have been in one accident before this with this car. Deductible is $500.

I was pulling into a very tight parking lot spot and I ended up hitting a barrier on the driver side of the car. This happened today afternoon.

    Damage:

    • Driver Side Mirror is broken and hanging by a cord (I'll be duct taping it so I can at least use it for now)
    • Scratches on driver side
    • Deep scratches on rear passenger door and driver side panel right above the back left wheel well
    • All damage above seems to be aesthetic and no structural damage to the car (minus the driver side mirror)

    Questions:

    1. Will my car insurance actually cover this?
    2. Should I be reporting this to the car insurance right away? (happened this afternoon)
    3. I own the car out right and was planning on trading this car in for a lease on a new car. Should I fix this up through insurance and then trade it in?
    4. Should I trade in the car as is with damage (obviously won't get much for it anymore) and not report it to insurance so my premiums won't go up?
    5. How much should I expect my premiums to go up if I report this through insurance?
    6. Any chance the car will be considered totaled? The car's equivalent value on other sites are about $10,000 but I think the book value might be less. I don't think the cost to repair will be anywhere close to $10,000 but could be around $4,000ish with parts and labor but I don't have a quote on that specifically. For reference, the dealership was going to offer me about $5,000-$5,500 for trade in value before the accident.

    Question.

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 09:17 AM PDT

I got hit on my driver side by another car trying to switch lanes the other night. it damaged my front bumper/Fender/ and some scratches to the door plus my mirror broke off hanging by the wire. my main question is.. I was embarrassed and honestly needed to see, so I super-glued my driver side mirror back on. when I take it to the shop, even though I did that, will the body shop still replace the mirror and insurance cover it? some glue ran down my door too.. I know, I'm dumb.

Why did my car insurance premium increase when I got married?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 11:14 AM PDT

I can't figure this one out. It was not by a lot. My wife does not drive, as in she has never had a driver's license, but they forced me to add her to the policy as an excluded driver. Just looking for the logic in this. On the phone they told me:

" Say for example you break your legs and don't call an ambulance but instead have your wife drive you, and on the way you get into an accident."

Ok, but you wouldn't cover that as she is clearly listed as an excluded driver.

"We might cover it anyway, it depends."

what? That doesn't seem logical or like that scenario would be worth the extra $75 a year.

Diminished Value Claim with State Farm

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 11:44 AM PDT

I was recently involved in a car accident and they are taking full responsibility and are 100% at fault. They have State Farm, and I just found out about diminished value claims. How do I go about getting payment for this? I am in California.

They sent out an adjuster already to get a estimate for the damages/repairs and are waiting for me to respond with which bodyshop to take the car to in order to fix it.

When should I be requesting for the diminished value though? Do I do it after the repairs are done? I was looking up online and it seems like I should take the car to the dealer or Carmax (for example) to get a quote on the lower trade-in/resale value of the car due to the accident. Is this supposed to be done before or after the repairs?
