Does anyone else feel awkward SAYING they own a business??

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 06:14 PM PDT

Okay guys, So I saw a recent post on here where OP was asking if they get odd reactions from folks when you tell them you own a business. My question is quite the opposite! does anyone else actually feel awkward saying that? I own a company that is experiencing mild success. I am very proud of myself and my company without a doubt. but when people ask what I do i tend to not even tell them because I feel cocky or boastful. I'm 27 and I think it may have something to do with talking to folks my age who are typically complaining about the 9-5 they deal with. Me *who loves my business and my schedule* feel kind of guilty in a way for having my own thing and being in control of my own destiny when others feel so trapped.

can anyone else level with me on this one!?

Do people get uncomfortable when you tell them you have your own business?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 04:34 AM PDT

I've noticed when people ask me what I do for a living and I tell them I'm self employed/have a business. it's almost as if you can see the reel of a thousand shattered dreams starts playing in there head. Alternatively they all but get up and walk away from the conversation. Am I just running into odd people or can I expect this for the duration of my life? Anyone else have similar experiences?

Edit: I'm not yelling at people that I have a business, I'm not forcing or projecting mental illness in some way that forces a conversation about my business. These are casual conversation that get to a point where I can say nothing or call myself self-employed.

P.S. I was having a lot of fun on this post talking and learning and joking with a lot of you but thanks to a small group of less than desirable persons down voting everything I do and name calling I'm virtually walking away from this post and sub.

How to get out of Partnership

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 01:12 AM PDT

I opened a barbershop with my then boyfriend 8 months ago. I stupidly paid for everything to start it up with my savings (about 30k). He's paid about 3k. We've broken up and he won't agree on anything. I've offered to buy him out, he won't leave. I've asked him to apply for loans to buy me out, he won't. I'm currently trying to find him a new partner to buy me out. All my money of wrapped up in this shop and I don't know what to do. We don't work well together anymore, he's unprofessional, dirty, irresponsible. He's stubborn and doesn't want to change anything. I do all the cleaning, paying bills. I can't keep doing this. We are an LLP partnership. I have no money left, so I can't afford a lawyer.

Can you do a cash out refinance on business?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 09:43 PM PDT

I know with real estate many people these days are buying a property with cash to get a good deal , or because some properties don't qualify for financing ( conventional at least )if they need work . Then they will get a cash out loan for typically 75% of the value . If they find a good enough deal they can sometimes get all their initial investment back out and then do it over . BRRRR ( buy rehab rent refinance repeat) strategy many call it .

I'm wondering if something similar is possible with small businesses . Example could you buy a business for $200,000 and then later on get a loan for 75% or $150k ?

    Facebook issues - account disabled

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 05:45 PM PDT

Not sure if this is the right place for this but I just started a consulting business and had just set up my FB account and business page, planning to use FB as a venue for posting content and ads for my business. I'd never had a personal FB page before so everything was set up brand new. I kept trying to verify my business page and it kept asking me to upload a photo of myself and documents proving that I own the business. I did this about 4-5 times, uploading more and more documents trying to satisfy them. Now I got a notice that my account and business page are disabled. I submitted an appeal but I am not holding out hope that anyone will actually look at it.

How come a thousand Russian trolls can get FB accounts and I can't? I didn't even have a chance to violate any terms of service as I never got to the point of actually posting anything. Anyone have any experience getting an account reinstated?

Opening brick & mortar store: What are my first steps for renovation/design?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 07:27 PM PDT

I have a location that I take possession of in a few weeks. I am opening a jewelry store. This will be my first physical location, but i have been selling online for many years. I have my sources for product but am lost when it comes to actually having the store built.

What are my first steps for designing and building the store? Do I hire a designer? Are their contractors that specialize in design and build for retail?

IMO with a jewelry store atheistics are paramount. I feel like the I need a designer, but I don't know. I do have a general idea of how I want it to look and flow.

    Any help is appreciated.

Best business structure for a band ?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 07:19 PM PDT

I am in a band from Baltimore and we are starting to earn money from shows , merch sales , e-commerce and digital streaming and sales

I was wondering what business structure would be best - there are 2 of us that are the main songwriters and the other membrrs we plan on contracting for both shows as well as rexording royalties on a project by project basis

Should we do an LLC or S-Corp? What state should we set up in ? I hear Delaware is good - but not sure of the reason

What is the set up cost for each c Structure?

We both put our personal money Into the project - but it's not always equal - just depends on who has it or who can borrow it -is there anything we need to legally do for putting our money I to the business - how would personal deductions work and can we recoup money we put in?

What is the annual expense for each structure?

When publishing through ascap or BMI would we use the business or our individual names ?

Do we need any special permits or anything for piblishing / selling merch / ECT?

Anything else we should know ?

    Thanks in Advance

No one told me this shit!!!

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 05:38 PM PDT

I hire a former addic who has been sober for 3 months and needs a job to make money to turn her life around.

I give her an entry level position and take away half of the normal responsibilities away to help her ease back into working.

I slowly return these responsibilities to her.

She kicks ass, keeps taking on more and more responsibilities.

2 years later she is an assistant manager.

Breaks up with boyfriend. Long story short: looses consciences at work, we realize she is overdosing, I drive her and a coworker to the ER (second employee held her head to maintain an air way), I return to life as normal.

I don't here from her again in a professional capacity until I receive her UNEMPLOYMENT request!

"I never actually told her she was fired"

REALLY??? What chance does she actually have??

Small Business Banking: Azlo vs Bank Novo

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 08:26 PM PDT

My small business bank account recently e-mailed me to let me know they were closing up shop, so I'm on the hunt for a new business account for my partnership LLC. The two on my shortlist are Azlo and Bank Novo. Does anyone have any experience with either of these? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I have sent 1000 well targeted people and got zero conversions; not a single sale. I'm in too deep and I am missing something any help or input would be gold to me right now....thanks to anyone who takes the time. It was expensive to send those folks there, and time consuming to create test and improve the AdWords campaigns and I don't want to put any more time into this concept if it is doomed I can just find a different product/niche....anyway thank you.

Best Way to Handle Referral Payouts to Customers?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 06:53 PM PDT

I was wondering how any of you have addressed this if you've used it.

We're an HVAC business. If a customer refers someone to us and their pre-tax invoice amount is $100-250, we're going to pay the referring person $25. $50 for $250+, and if the person they referred to us replaces their system then they'll get $100.

Cash seems to be too annoying to handle constantly, checks can be messy because people take forever to cash them...my best guess was either to get them a Visa gift card for that amount each time, or we'd have to get reloadable debit cards and add money to them when that customer picks up a referral. It sounds like the gift cards are the best bet though.

Thoughts? Pitfalls? Considerations I'm not looking at? Thanks!

The legal side of an online business?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 06:37 PM PDT

I am starting a shopify business, and as a part of it I have to write up a contract between me and some partners/suppliers. I have been quoted $2000+GST by a lawyer to write it all for me, but I am trying to write it on my own. If any of you have had business agreements before have you done them without a contract, written your own contract, or had one written professionally?

Also for selling online, do you write your own terms and conditions, shipping and returns policies etc? Just curious how you all go about this and keep costs down. Thanks!

    Is my business feasible?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 06:21 PM PDT

A few months ago I launched a perfume sampling business where I would decant larger bottles of expensive perfumes into smaller ones and post them out. This was a much needed solution to a problem that I myself faced as in Australia there aren't any established brands that offer this service compared to the US. I validated the market by reselling perfumes I bought off of eBay sellers and found that there definitely is a demand and lately I've been receiving positive feedback on my value for money. This is where my problem lies. I have some stock on offer but before expanding with more bottles I want to determine business sustainability.

A 100mL bottle of Sauvage Dior for example = $1.49/mL AUD (there are cheaper prices but I'm taking conservative estimates). I sell 5mL of this for $15 AUD postage inclusive. Postage costs me $2 Australiawide (untracked) and the bubble mailer and the vial is ~$1 total. All in all this leaves me 15-3-7.50 = $4.50 in profit.

An order takes 10 minutes to fulfil, but i suspect it'll be much faster due to economy of scale.

I have a few sustainability concerns:

    1. is an average of ~$5 a healthy profit margin per product or should I increase this. More expensive perfumes net me less while cheaper ones net me more. Unfortunately customers buy more of the expensive ones (Aventus, Kilian, Etc).
    2. A competitor charges $10 shipping cost at checkout whereas I don't and include it into the price. Would this be a better business model?
    3. If an order takes 10 - 15 minutes to fulfil with about 10mL liquid lost per 100mL is it even worth continuing at $5 margin? Customer acquisition through ads would kill any chances of growth (most of my existing business is from repeating customers in a very localised part of South Australia strangely, i'm not based there.)

I need help assessing this venture's viability before I can dive in more financially increasing the range of perfumes I offer for decanting. Currently I've limited my business model to offering 18 perfumes a month only on a rotating cycle but as one reddit user pointed out, who cares what I have on offer next month, customers care about whats on offer now and I agree so I want to offer every perfume at once like a regular store. This involves me buying more perishable stock and increasing risk.

Is it worth continuing? Might be a bit hard to say but I would really appreciate some insight.

Advice on whether to get a co packer or not.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 05:21 PM PDT

I've been making a boiled peanut receive for a while now and have a real good thing. I don't want to start selling peanuts on the side of the road because, well, that just looks really bad. I want to start bringing them to local groceries around my area to sell and get them involved in putting the product out. However, I don't know where to start. I've seen from other posts that I will need permits and all that but I just don't know where to go from there. Can I get a copacker to make my product, pack it and then I can distribute it to the groceries? Any advice will be great!

3 people starting a business in Quebec, which bank should we use?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 01:24 PM PDT

2 people and I are starting a business and looking to open a bank account, we are in Quebec and we were looking into opening an account with TD. It would be a chequing account under 3 names for the business, but we are not incorporated and probably will not for a little while.

However, I did a little bit of research and found out that maybe some other banks' rewards seemed a bit... Better? I have no clue how American banks work but I heard that CITI have like a cash back on purchases and cash back on credit payment, so that means 2% cash back as I understand.

Then we have American Express or BMO which gives air miles rewards.

We're all kind of inexperienced when it comes to the finance section, so any help would be appreciated!

Tax Cuts and Jobs Act... Can anyone explain this to me?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 12:53 PM PDT

    https://www.mrzllp.com/blog/write-off-your-inventory-2018

Trying to understand what this means for my retail store. So normally I take inventory at the end of every year... If I have more $ in inventory at the end, I send the value of the difference to my accountant and it becomes part of my profit and thus my tax basis. But in 2018 do I treat that same number (the difference in inventory) as a deduction from my tax basis??? Or is the entire value of my inventory a deduction from my tax basis in 2018 as the article makes it sound? Then what about about 2019... merchandise to sell is treated as operating supplies? What does that mean? We just ignore it and all the taxes from here on out are purely based on revenue minus expenses? I'm in California, does this affect state taxes at all?

Accounting was never my strong suit. I'm confused and my CPA takes like years to get back to me. Can anyone sum this up in laymen's?

Performance management advice for a high growth business of 20+ people with a variety of roles

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 04:38 PM PDT

Looking for some advice on improving our performance management system at my business. When we started the company, we had one primary role we were hiring for and created a really extensive rubric for that role / experience level but as we've scaled / our roles have diversified, our process has not scaled with the company. The old process we created is totally out of date at this point.

We're a SAAS software and consulting company that hires a lot of high performers right out of school who are used to a rigid grading system so our lack of capability in this area has come up a few times when team members give us feedback on the business.

We do weekly checkins with each employee and those go fine, it's just the bi-annual reviews that aren't run very well. We can ask team members to complete a self assessment and rate themselves on a scale of 1-5 but struggle to give them benchmarks to assess themselves against. This ends up with a process where performance ratings feel arbitrary, team members struggle to know what specific behaviors lead to meeting expectations vs exceeding, etc.

As an owner, I haven't prioritized developing rubrics for each individual role (we've probably have 6-10 roles at different levels of experience) because they'll likely become outdated as we grow (as our original system did). As such, ratings are not tied to compensation very well (we've got a lot of 3-4s but end up paying people what we feel is fair for their contributions, you end up with two 4s that might make completely different amounts). The other thing is that we're relatively high growth (went from 10 to 20 employees this year, trying to add 10-15 more in 2019) so roles and responsibilities evolve quickly. Also, no full time HR so I'm creating / managing any system we create.

Anyone in the small business / SAAS world with a solid performance management system that scales / works well with their team. I'd love your recommendations!!!

TLDR: High growth SAAS and BPO business with a weak performance review process - Looking for tips from people who have solved this problem at their company!

Starting a self-employed LLC: Federal Tax & Registered Agents questions

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 02:44 PM PDT

    Hi Everyone,

I'm starting a Business that will be based out of NJ, and I had a few questions regarding Federal Taxes & Registered Agents

    First up Taxes:

My LLC will only have myself as an employee and no one else, from my understanding of: https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/limited-liability-company-llc
I would have to file the LLC's taxes under my personal 1040 form as disregarded entity.

    1. If I were to be married and filing jointly, would this have an effect on the disregarded entity category of the LLC's Taxes? (even if the spouse is not a part of the LLC?)
    2. My LLC is not planning on making more than net income of $400 for the first year, and will be primarily focused on web development & hosting services. Will I be liable for SE Tax?

    Next Up Registered Agents:

    1. Are registered agent services considered to be an employee of the company? (ex: www.incfile.com as a registered agent would that be considered an expense, or employee income.) I'm not sure if a registered agent is a part of the LLC or not?
    2. I was looking on https://www.incfile.com/form-order-now.php?entityType=LLC&entityState=NJ as a registered agent service, I feel like a lot of the "LLC PREMIUM SERVICES" are just scams and the base silver package would fit my needs. Are the certain services I should definitely look into having when getting a Registered Agent Service?
    3. Any personal recommendations for Registered Agent services?

    And Finally:

Is there something I'm not considering within the two subjects listed above? yeah I know this is very open ended, but any advice would be appreciated (Feel free to PM).

    Estimated Quarterly Taxes

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 12:48 PM PDT

I've been in business for myself for the 6 years. Next year I am moving to another state. I am keeping my business but I expect (and have heard within my industry) that I will retain 30% of my clients once I make the move. So let's say that this year I will make 100K and next year I will probably make closer to 30K as I revamp my efforts, build a new client base in the new location and attempt to switch in person clients to online only.

Does this mean I will have to pay a 100K based estimated quarterly tax when I know I will be making far, far less than that? That seems really rough. :/

Can anyone point me in the right direction regarding this? Is there some paperwork I can file to change that...or?

    Thanks!
