Why did the entire market drop today? Posted: 04 Oct 2018 10:41 AM PDT Why did the entire market drop today? Did everyone decide today today was a sell day? For example just because fb dropped in the tech sector why people think to sell google stock as well [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Oct 2018 06:27 AM PDT I posted this in r/stocks also. Does anyone have more information on this? Looks like a resolution made it through the house recently. From what I gather, this account is tax free on the principle and gains, $2500 max yearly contribution, and no restrictions on withdrawing the funds. I haven't done a deep dive into this yet and will once I'm home, but this sounds pretty nice if that is in fact what it is. Supposedly similar to Canada's TFSA and other account in the UK and so on. Link to get started: https://policy.house.gov/legislative/bills/hr-6757-family-savings-act-2018 EDIT: It's called the "Universal Savings Account" in the bill itself. My impression is that it will operate like a Roth, but with far less restrictions on withdrawal. That extra freedom is nice. [link] [comments] |
Has Elon made $TSLA un-investable? Posted: 04 Oct 2018 05:52 PM PDT Thoughts? As much as I would like to invest in (rather than merely trade) TSLA, Elon now seems to get a kick out of drilling his own stock price, maybe looking forward to the satisfaction of gloating in front of the SEC and the short sellers, as his "master plan" begins to take shape and the stock price climbs. He seems deliberately to be making investors decide if they are with him through thick and thin, surge and sell-off, rather than trading his company in the short- to medium-term, not dissimilar in theme to his disdain for short sellers and naysayers generally. TSLA is down after-hours, again, following his twitter jab at the SEC. Under normal circumstances, even after the broader sell-off today, I would regard this is a good entry point; but who's to say he wont pop off next week and send the stock down 5 points and grab headlines for all the wrong reasons? There's a distinction to be made between a risk/reward stock on the one hand and apparent self-harm on the other. Of course he's a fiduciary so he can't be seen to be doing that, but boy if he isn't cutting it increasingly close, which seems to be his point, which is my point. [link] [comments] |

How I pull financial data from websites into Google Spreadsheet for easy analysis Posted: 04 Oct 2018 11:12 PM PDT Hey guys, been using a tool I built to keep my Google Spread Sheet synced with financial data listed on various websites so as to make it easier to make quick calculations as and when needed to. I created the following data source which I scheduled to run on a daily basis https://getdata.io/data-sources/7841-list-of-mortgage-reits-reit-notes?utm_source=reddit_investing It pulls its data from the following site which provides a constantly updated list of mortgage REIT yields https://www.reitnotes.com/reit-sector/Mortgage I then synced up the following Google sheet to always display the latest data from the site. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1GiSd_WUQyO8seNAGhBqOOIthce4TVrlkm3Cj9Cedci4/edit?usp=sharing The main reason why I did this was because I observed a significant drop in the prices of some of the MReit positions I am holding over the past few days and wanted to do a quick sanity check to see if the drop was due to micro shifts in my positions or macro shifts in the economy. Hope you might find this useful as well. :) [link] [comments] |
If you a long-term investor, why aren't you in a leveraged ETF? Posted: 04 Oct 2018 04:36 PM PDT And by long, I"m talking putting your money in the stock market and letting it sit there for 20 years. Why doesn't everyone put their money in TQQQ or UDOW or something like that? I've seen arguments that the underlying ETF has better returns, but the charts certainly don't show that over the last 8 year bullmarket. Since leveraged ETF's have only been around since 2006, we don't have alot of data to backtest. But I'm wondering the opinions of people. To me, if you don't actually need the $$$$ as a liquid asset, you are far better off putting it in a leveraged ETF and riding the highs and lows, than a normal ETF or mutual fund. [link] [comments] |
Danish bank shares fall sharply Posted: 05 Oct 2018 04:26 AM PDT Danish Bank shares fall sharply on Friday morning. At 04.10, the value dropped by 10.6 percent after the stock market opened at 9:00 this morning. Overall, shareholders have lost nearly 40 percent this year, the money laundering case in Estonia has taken the headlines. Financial Times writes Friday how Danish Bank Estonian branch in 2013 transferred money for Russians without knowing where they eventually ended. The newspaper has an internal document from the bank where the so-called "mirror trading" - also known as mirror trades - are described. The transactions took place on the way to Russian customers purchased securities in rubles. They were then sold in a foreign currency as the dollar. The method is legal, but, according to authorities a red flag in relation to money laundering. Danish Bank transferred up to 63 billion a year through the type of trades. - The information about the "mirror trading" gives new fuel to the case. Deutsche Bank has previously been a rather large fine to be involved in something like, say equity adviser Martin Munk from Jyske Bank Ritzau Finans. Deutsche Bank was last year fined four billion crowns in a case of money laundering by authorities in the US and Britain. Russians were using the mirror trades led 64 billion out of the country. Danish Bank said Thursday that the US Justice Department investigates money laundering in Estonia. Employees of the Danish Bank Estonian branch was aware that there was a risk of damaging the bank's reputation by mirror traffickers. - It is still a risk we run in other parts of our international business, with the natural currency of power is always out of Russia. I want to buy a small stock for fun Posted: 05 Oct 2018 12:14 AM PDT I'm interested in the stock market very casually. I would like to buy a small stock just for fun and to learn. What's something I can buy for less than $10? What's a good source to learn from? [link] [comments] |
Anyone losing money in their deferred compensation retirement accounts ie..457b/401k? Posted: 05 Oct 2018 03:46 AM PDT I have a 457b retirement account through my place of employment which I use Nationwide as my broker. For the past three years I was doing it all by myself with pretty good gains but recently (few months ago) I set it up to let nationwide handle my funds (with a "small" 1% annual fee). I set it up to be aggressive however I am losing a lot of money now that nationwide handles it. Is this just the market? Anyone else have any issues like this? Should I go back to handling the funds myself? Thanks [link] [comments] |

Question about Risk/Reward Ratio Posted: 05 Oct 2018 01:20 AM PDT Hey guys, I am a newbie trader and I have been trying to swing trade for a couple months now. I have read all over the place that you want a risk to reward ratio of at least 1:2. Some resources saying that 1:2 is a bad deal and that you want at least 1:3, 1:4, 1:5 or more. This has me confused, because at some point the risk/reward has to get too high and your money just sits there until inevitably the stop loss is tripped and all your trades become losers. So, at some point, your risk/reward ratio affects your win percentage. Is there a way to calculate the optimal risk/reward for your trading strategy? Maybe by using standard deviations of price movements? How do professionals handle this sort of thing? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Keep investing in a poor preforming fund or stop? Posted: 05 Oct 2018 01:06 AM PDT Hello, I invest a small amount into two funds every month. One is preforming relatively well (4%) but the other is down around 9%. I know the worst thing you can do is sell out of panic but is it wise to stop investing monthly into that fund until it starts to pick up (if it does) and put the excess into the well preforming fund? The fund preforming badly is an emerging markets Asian type fund, which all seem to be getting hit hard recently. Appreciate everyone's opinions! Thanks! *edit the two fund are Jupiter Asian Fund Acc and Vanguard Lifestrategy 80 [link] [comments] |
What is the market value of Humira? If it were an independent company, how much would it be worth? Posted: 05 Oct 2018 12:52 AM PDT Working on a project that involves estimating Humira's value. Revenue for the past few years: https://www.statista.com/statistics/318206/revenue-of-humira/ My understanding is that Humira's revenue is expected to continue to climb for the next few years, then level off, more or less, as its international patents begin to expire. Rebalance on seemingly cyclical ETF dips? Posted: 04 Oct 2018 08:15 PM PDT Amateur question incoming: Take a look at the one year chart for XEF.TO and theres a fairly consistent pattern of dips and waves. Am I wrong to think the pattern isn't abstract? When this pattern is sustained for considerable amounts of time, is there a legitimate argument for taking advantage of those highs/lows for rebalancing/purchasing, or is this completely nonsensical market timing? Thanks! Everyone is so friendly here to newbies, appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Rhoughts on cobalt miners as an investment Posted: 04 Oct 2018 07:43 PM PDT With the popularity of EVs on the rise (thanks, Elon!) there should be a rise in demand for cobalt. Take for example Katanga Mining. They are currently at their 52 week low. The upside I see is that they have resolved their legal issues and have ramped up production. The downside is political instability in the DRC. Am I nuts in thinking that this is a good long term (high risk) play? [link] [comments] |
What companies do you believe for long term success? Posted: 04 Oct 2018 06:57 AM PDT Not a personal thread about my situation but generally about success of stocks, currently I have 23.27% $AAPL 14.03% $MSFT 13.51% $JD 12.73% $ATVI 12.24% $PLAY 10.13% $EDIT 9.03% $CSCO 8.03% $ARNA Wanna spend 1800$ would people throw more money into MSFT or ATVI before they release new game or go full diverse mode and go $KO (cheap and good news all around) $DIS (good news great long term) $BP (oil prices going up but stock is expensive) or any other OIL company before cold winter begins even shit like $CHK Or just say screw it and invest $1800 in JD before their CEO is proven not guilty and they start smashing sales, then close to winter Trump will somehow end trade war with China and come up with some deal. (too much imagination and positivity in that one tho) Basically point of the thread is what companies do YOU believe in that are listed or not listed, judging on news and your imagination. To my surprise Tencent has trounced Amazon! Posted: 04 Oct 2018 10:52 PM PDT So much hype about Amazon, but had you invested in Tencent since 2009, you would have utterly demolished the gains of Amazon investors, until the Feb 2018 Chinese stock correction (but even now Tencent is still a bit ahead). I can't believe I didn't look at the charts til now! [link] [comments] |
would you be invest (time or money) in a Reddit-based business? Posted: 04 Oct 2018 07:01 PM PDT Hi friends, I'll get to the point: There's a group of 400 of us over at r/TheBusinessGroup that are using Reddit to create a business from scratch. Which business? We don't know yet - it's a 100% community-driven group so we're all going to vote on it. We're in our early stages and we begin crowd-sourcing ideas tomorrow. Call it a venture, call it a experiment, whatever - we're really excited for what we're about to launch. In short, we figured it wouldn't hurt to have some additional talent join us early on. So would you guys be interested in this? Perhaps you could take a look and let us know what you think? Feel free to ask any questions you may have :) [link] [comments] |
