My job has a designated room to cry in Posted: 07 Oct 2018 05:01 PM PDT So I work in industry as an accounts analyst for a shipping and logistics company. No names but it's pretty up and coming. Anyway on day 1 of work they show me the epic lunch room, treat me to food downtown for lunch, give me my own desk and setup even though I'm a temp and then.......show me the cry room with the fancy massage chair to soothe your nerves. During the interview they said the job was chaotic and stressful and I thought I had it until I ended up in the cry room during week 4. Other new girl has been there like everyday since she started. Even my trainer went one day. Either way what I thought was a really weird job amenity turned put to be really considerate of my job. They thought of everything. Your job got any weird amenities? Why did you pursue Accounting? Posted: 07 Oct 2018 09:03 PM PDT Confused college student here strongly considering accounting as a major and career path. I don't know what it's all about yet, but can see myself genuinely liking it at least a little bit, as I like dealing with numbers and organizing stuff. Just wanna hear your story! [CAN] 2018 Public Accounting Comp. Thread Posted: 07 Oct 2018 01:40 PM PDT The current comp. threads are heavily U.S. based (understandably). This would be helpful for my Canadian family to get an understanding of how salaries are across Canuck land, and to not cry in sadness when looking at the current comp. threads.

Mid 40s accountant has the degrees, but not the job. Posted: 07 Oct 2018 01:43 PM PDT For 2 plus years, I've been trying everything to get my foot in the door of an accounting firm, industry accounting, entry level accounting jobs. Nothing. I have a stint in VITA, but no experience. I have a BS in accounting in 2013, an MBA in 2016; 3.1 GPA undergrad/3.2 GPA masters. Another career fair incoming in the next 10 days. I swear if this doesn't click then maybe I should just ask for a promotion to my fast food place I've worked for the last 4 years. My location isn't ideal. Mainly smaller firms in the region but job openings are few and far between. I don't currently have the funds to move to a larger city (St. Louis, Nashville), but was hoping to do so in 2 years. I've looked at entry level jobs, but get rejected pretty quickly. I'm willing to learn, but I think my age might be a deterrent (even though I look young for my age). Also, can't really afford the CPA exam or study materials needed to pass. Some career advice would be appreciated. I'm at my wit's end! [link] [comments]
[AUS] "Fake" Collectable, Capital Gains Tax (CGT) Applicable?? Posted: 07 Oct 2018 08:55 PM PDT In this scenario: A couple buy a collectable (i.e. an antique Pot or Vase) from a street market for $1,000. They then keep it for roughly 3 years, and when they sell the collectable, find out that it is fake and are only able to sell it for $50. The Question: Would the CGT loss of $950 be quarantined to be used against future CGT payable, or because the item was never really at FMV of $1,000 and instead at ~$50, there is no CGT loss to be quarantined against future losses when the asset is sold? FYI this is for CGT in Australia, and not the US/another country. [link] [comments]

Signing off as preparer on other people's work Posted: 07 Oct 2018 10:12 PM PDT Hi everyone, I'm a first year in B4 audit on a year-end right now. Things are getting pretty hectic on the audit and my seniors have been asking me to sign off on workpapers that they have prepared just so that they could sign off as reviewer. They do this despite them doing a majority of the procedures on the workpaper. Is there something wrong with this? [link] [comments]
I don't understand the answer for this homework question Posted: 07 Oct 2018 10:02 PM PDT I thought the answer (for "Apr. 1-Deprec.") would be 600, since: using double declining method, the Year 2 depreciation from January 4-April 1 is 4800 * (100% / 4) * 2 * (3/12) = 600. However, the answer is 800. I don't understand why is the answer 800; in order to get 800, it seems like I have to multiply 4/12 instead of 3/12, but shouldn't it be 3 months instead of 4 months? Not talking to anyone for the day? Posted: 07 Oct 2018 12:48 PM PDT Does anyone else worry about this? In public, by nature of having clients and having people work above and below me, I would be talking to people asking questions and trying to reason through workpapers. It was also easier to relate to people and there were plenty of people around my age and I had shared interests and activities. Now that I moved into industry, I can realistically spend everyday staring at my computer not talking to another human. I have two co-workers in my department (Accounting Manager and CEO) and share and office space with the accounting manager. She is very lovely but doesn't really talk much either and is twice my age so it's hard to find stuff to talk about and most of our conversations are forced. I know this seems kind of bizarre but I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I like the actual work and as an introvert I enjoy the time to myself. However, even introverts need SOME human interaction during the day. It's getting to the point where I'm thinking about getting a roommate again instead of living on my own just so I have SOMEONE to talk to. Humans are meant to interact and not stare at a computer screen all day and I'm have a tough time reconciling this after I left public. Thoughts? [link] [comments]

Looking for advice on my future. A year out of high school. Posted: 07 Oct 2018 10:42 PM PDT I'm gonna throw a TL;DR at the end in case you don't want to read it all. I am obviously interested in accounting and the beginning steps required to have a career. Here's my situation. I currently work full time sporadic hours as an HVAC technician and musician. While I make a good living, I'm unfulfilled. I really enjoyed some of the introductory finance and accounting courses I took online over the summer this year. I think I could succeed in the environment and have looked into taking some online courses for a degree. But for the most part you guys don't often seem in support of that. All the searches on here pull you guys telling people the networking is to important to succeed with an online only degree. As a musician I totally get the importance of networking but is there any chance at a career in this without quitting my jobs and going to school in person? Maybe some ways I could network online or meet and greets? I have considered other options but I don't think I have many aside from just not doing accounting (I want to go into public but I'm cool if i had to go the other way). Which is fine if that's the way life pushes me but I still want to know. Could I maybe get something in finance and do well with it? Or is networking still as important? I did well in high school and got accepted into some really nice colleges with full rides but my life didn't work out that way unfortunately. I can't do HVAC for the rest of my life my body is already sore on a day to day basis and I'm only 19. And being a full time musician just isn't the life I dreamed. TL;DR Really interested in a career in accounting. Can only earn a degree online due to full time work. Worth it or should I pursue other options? Thank you guys for any insight you can offer. I'm all ears. [link] [comments]

Posted: 07 Oct 2018 02:31 PM PDT Are Becker pass keys useful? I'm studying for REG and am going through each pass key and writing down the notes that correspond with each one. Has anyone found that the pass keys are usually correct as to the type of MCQs the CPA generally likes to ask? [link] [comments]

Posted: 07 Oct 2018 09:57 PM PDT Any recent graduates from SDSU fulfill the CPA requirements without going to grad school? I will have enough credits but I'm not sure if the classes I've taken will qualify. And I know I have to petition to take the accounting ethics course. [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Oct 2018 06:00 PM PDT I'm looking to boomerang back to big four assurance. I've spent a year in industry and have decided that the grass certainly isn't greener. I was a senior associate before taking a job in private equity accounting. It isn't more than glorified data processing and the hours are long, albeit less seasonal and intense than public, but I miss being involved with building client relationships, doing varied tasks, working on "projects" instead of routine tasks, having mentors/being a mentor, and the flexibility public provides.
Feel free to share any other anecdotes! [link] [comments]
Got a 10% increment for a company with minimal progression Posted: 07 Oct 2018 07:42 AM PDT Hi guys, I'm a senior associate 2 with the big 4 doing accounting advisory. I got an offer of 10-15% bump to join another company as a senior accountant. However, this role is within a listed company that is seen to be limited in progression, and the senior management are mostly military veteran parachuted in. Glassdoor reviews is at 2.7. Should I take up the offer? Edit: I personally do not wish to stay beyond a year in the big 4 regardless. Planning to look into other aspects of my life such as fitness and my personal relationship.
