something very shady is going on in this sub

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 05:25 PM PDT

I've been here for 2 years now and have learned a lot, affecting how I run my own company. (Last year's AMA with LetMommySleep had a major impact on our hiring process, for example. That was the kind of content I came here for.)

Today I watched and tracked someone's really great novice question repeatedly get downvoted, as if there are bots doing it. Every time it got an upvote, it would get downvoted again to 0. Even though it has over 20 comments responding to it helpfully.

Meanwhile some of the most banal and self-promotional topics (oh look a link to a blog at the end) are getting hundreds of upvotes

Mods, can you weigh in on this? I saw the post saying the sub is turning to garbage, but it really feels like this is a coordinated effort.

I have a thing to pick with you guys.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 08:57 AM PDT

I've been part of this community for 6 years, mainly lurking for the majority. This community turned into a leech fest, with the leechers being so skeptical. Let me say this: No one here is forcing you to sign up to anything, and the more you guys bitch the less likely successful entrepreneurs would want to provide value here. And I want to fucking learn from them- for free.

Whenever someone provides value with their company link, everyone shuts out the content and advice being spoonfed to them and just bashes the OP for link dropping.

To be very honest, the traffic from r/entrepreneur rarely converts. You guys need to understand that.

If people DON'T provide their company name or niche, you ask for it. If people DO provide a link, you say it's shilling.

There was a post from this guy that gave SO much fucking insight and advice. I literally took two pages of notes, screen shotted it just in case he would delete it.

The first comment is a guy claiming that every time he sees the word "serial entrepreneur" that he thinks it's a scam marketer. Like what?

Second top comment is " Blah blah blah... Linked to something your selling or trying to direct people towards your product for more sales. r/entrepreneur in a nutshell". To be frank, that OP maybe saw 1 sale from that post.

There are real entrepreneurs who are trying to provide real value to you newbies. I'm sick of seeing people thinking everyone here is trying to sell to you guys. You guys are so quick to bash, yet miss out on the insane value being spoon fed to you.

I'm trying to change the culture here. Obviously, if someone is just link spamming with little to content, fuck that person. But u/FreeBeersRS provided information that people would PAY for.

Focus on the value being provided rather than the links. Bash the value, not the link. If anyone said that they didn't see value in the above post, I'd love to see your business and talk to you what you did differently to make more than 6figures/month in MRR.

People always say "use what you have" - what the hell do I do with this stuff?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 09:08 AM PDT

When it comes to business "ideas", they pop into my head all the time, but I'm looking for something I don't have to spend months building skills to be able to even think about beginning. Here are some skills/things I possess - if anyone has any suggestions as to how I could put them together to make something that could one day be profitable, I would love to hear them:

    • Not a programmer, but I have taken courses and possess a basic understanding of C++, Python, and JavaScript
    • Have run my own Wordpress blogs (.com, not .org)
    • Fluent in English and Spanish; proficient in Brazilian Portuguese
    • Traveled to Mexico, all of the Spanish-speaking Caribbean (I worked there), and several other countries in Central and South America
    • Have acquaintances, close friends and former coworkers throughout the aforementioned region
      • Contacts include small business owners, channel partners, local politicians, motorcycle taxi drivers, regular taxi drivers, internationally-famous musicians, famous-in-their-mom's-eyes musicians, students, teachers, embassy personnel, chemical engineers, and basically everything in-between
    • Decent cook
    • Worked in risk analysis for the travel industry, focusing on Latin America
    • Former teacher and tutor
    • Crocheter and avid lucid dreamer
    • Horror movie fanatic with an extensive international music knowledge (its how I learned my 2nd and 3rd languages)
    • I have a whole house at my disposal as far as office space goes (working on getting it fixed up, though, so this isn't an "I can invite clients into my home!" type of situation)
    • Budget of up to 5k

People always say "use what you have", but I'm at a loss. Does anyone see any way I can take some of these random things, put them together, and create something of use?

    Thanks guys

Need advice/guidance on setting up a simple E-Commerce store for my used equipment business.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 10:11 AM PDT

A few years ago I started refurbishing used laboratory equipment as a side hustle/hobby and it has since grown pretty steadily. I'm on pace to do $80k-$100k in sales this year and have slowly started adding some new products that my friends in the industry set me up with. I'm pretty happy with it, but it still exists as a secondary stream of income in addition to my full time job.

Currently, I sell 100% of this product through eBay. While things are going well, I've always been a little uneasy with 100% of my revenue coming through one channel. I tried to set up a Shopify store last year, but being that I'm not super knowledgeable in tech, I found it a little overwhelming and a bit too time consuming. Does anyone have any recommendations for how I could go about getting a site built where I could upload or add my current inventory on a regular basis? Because it's used inventory, the description and pictures change all the time. I've heard that I can have a site sync with my eBay store and upload listings and inventory level automatically? I'm not sure if this is true. I've done some research, but it seems like there are a lot of options out there and I guess I was just looking for someone to point me in the right direction.

Is there a service that would set up a site for me and make it simple enough to manage that I would be able to make my own inventory changes? Any idea on what the cost for something like this should be? Is there anyone with a similar model that can give me some pointers? Thanks in advance!

    Should I license my business?

I have decided to go full time with my photography career, but know little about the legal side of owning a business. Should I get a business license for a 1 man business? What are the benefits of filing for a state business license? Or LLC?

    Thanks for your help!

I'm in need of advice for a business conference ASAP

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 01:05 PM PDT

This evening I'm heading out to the east coast for a large business conference. I am going into my third year of college and tomorrow I will be representing a well known club on my campus (part of an international organization with club chapters in multiple universities).

I assume a lot of you have great networking experience, and I could really use some tips or advice. I am fairly new as president of this club, and just want to set a good example/ keep it cool. I've been to one conference for this before, but it was only for the west coast chapters (which I am a part of), and it mainly consisted of listening to speakers. This upcoming event is much more interactive and focuses on networking with other schools.

My stomach is in knots all of a sudden. I fly there overnight and our first meeting starts a few hours after landing tomorrow morning. Any tips are greatly appreciated!

Edit: If this post is not allowed here let me know. I assumed that this community has the best and most experience.

How can I branch out from my current operation?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 12:59 PM PDT

I have an e-bay account with a good number of positive reviews and zero negative ones. I figured that I can use this in order to start selling other items as well. The problem is that I don't know which ones.

Has anyone had this problem before? How did you go about doing research to determine which product will work best? I'd love to know your process.

How I spent $260 and made $5,700 in four days (so far)

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 01:38 AM PDT

    Foreword

This post is short and to the point, this will not work for everyone and requires you to actually have a relevant skill / business.

    First steps

I recently obtained a significant number of contact details for people in a specific industry. I got this information using beautifulsoup4 to scrap a website. From this I have nearly 120,000 addresses and phone numbers across multiple professions.

To test this I selected a single profession I am knowledgeable about, in a suburb close to mine.

I requested an opinion from this subreddit and marketing about how to best use this infornation. This subreddit basically told me to mail out shit and marketing didn't even respond.

    Choosing my offering

I'm a management accountant full time and have completed three masters, I am former bank employee who holds a mortgage broker and financial planner accreditations. I am accredited to basically offer any financial consulting I want, sell home loans and investment advice.

My CTA was "call now for a free 30 minute consultation" and "This service will be charged to the bank, with no out of pocket to you".

    Marketing

I decided I would target mortgage broking and financial analysis as my offering and mailed out to 130 people in a single suburb as a test.

My marketing materials were a full gloss print that I made in word and had printed at office works. I designed it myself and obtained the images from a free stock image website. This cost me $1 per page.

I also spent $1 per stamp and mailed them out.

    Response rate

From 130 mail outs the next day I had 2 people contact me. I got their details and processed their details for refinances (50bps lower then their current rate). Banks in AUS can process a loan in 60 minutes and sign up online.

    Revenue

From these two people I made $2,700 and $2,000 + 15bps in trail.

I may get more responses in the future but for a four day week this is a good test case.

Happy to answer any questions or take any feedback to improve!

    Edit: My next steps

As you can tell from the above, the cost to reach out to these people will run north of $200k. So I intend on running facebook ads after I complete a mail out to engage with people on the fence.

I intend on driving them to a website to collect email addresses and try and convert with monthly content or something.

I intend on building a site in weebly and using mail chimp. This has not even started, its just my next step intentions.

I'm looking for a task app that will notify me if not completed

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 12:39 PM PDT

Hi, I need a recommendation for a program or app.

I have daily tasks that need to be done. I have virtual assistants who can do these tasks. But, let's say one day one of them is sick or forgets to do the task...I need to know about this so I can do it myself or have another person do the task. Can you think of any app that I could set recurring tasks, that the assistant must click a checkbox that they have finished it daily...and if it doesn't get checked off, I receive a notification?

    Question About Automation!

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 11:49 AM PDT

Hello people, I have been in this sub for a bit, and have learned a lot. I am not an entrepreneur yet, but hope to be one in the future.

I have a part time job as a programmer and on the side I am working on some projects that hopefully I can make it to a proper product to sell in the future or be used to make passive income.

I am really in to automation. As of now I have finished 2 automation projects.

One is an algo trading software , it deals with automated selling and buying. You just turn it on and it buys and sells according to your strategy.

Second one is an automated youtube video maker and uploader. Its a simple program where it deals with all the video making process (intro, outro, logo, music etc), and uploads straight to youtube channel. It also write all the required descriptions (such as copyright, disclaimers etc).

As of now, algo trading software and youtube channel are doing their things, and need a long time to churn out some profit. I lost my money with my algo trading, (nothing wrong with the automated system, my strategies were crap, so I am consistently developing in order to increase profit), with youtube, I have 4 subscribers lol

But in the mean time, I want to see if I can develop another automated program that can earn a bit of money.

My question is, are there any ideas where automation can be used to make a bit of side money?

I thought about online surveys, paid internet browsing, but I want to see what experienced entrepreneurs have in mind.

If this is not the subreddit to ask these kinds of questions I am sorry. I am quite new to reddit.

How should I monetize my 1,000+ writers newsletter?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 11:38 AM PDT

    Hi,

I've been running www.freelanceabit.com for a while now, which started as a fun project to help friends find writing gigs. Now it's grown to 1,000+ people and running it takes a lot of time + some money for email service.

I've been toying around with ideas to monetize it - maybe a paid slack group or some sort of course?

    How would you monetize it?

    Thanks!!!

    Fabrication business advice request.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 11:25 AM PDT

I'm looking to start a fabrication business. I am a professional fabricator. I've got experience with more or less all shop equipment, production run optimization, most common forms of welding, etc. I'm hoping to start a business in the next year or so, and want to start trying to figure out how to get work for my future shop. Any advice? I'm planning on having a couple of items that I produce and market, in addition to a few specialty services I will advertise online and locally(custom formed bicycle parts and sheet metal boxes).

    Review my ecommerce website please

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 11:19 AM PDT

    Hello,

I just launched a website selling beard care related products. Admittedly it still needs some fine tuning but I wanted to get some feedback from the community if I could. The website is www.beardprep.com and it went live yesterday. Because I am bootstrapping this I used a developer from Fiverr but the whole website only cost me $262 including tip. I'd be interested in what changes you'd make as I have a bit of money coming in soon and will be able to afford making some changes as necessary. I look forward to your feedback!

What Would Be A Revenue Generating Small Business Industry For One To Grow In The Future?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 10:54 AM PDT

I'm a college student majoring in petroleum engineering and I've always thought about starting a small business for generating a bit of extra finances to pay my expenses and because it sounds fun. I'm just wondering what would be a good and or decently profitable industry/idea/service/concept to get into or provide with the business. I know I have enough time since I have way too much extra time on my hands which could probably be devoted to he business.

    Thanks.

I am a web designer who is trying to figure out the right way to approach businesses to fill their needs with my websites. What selling points/pain points would a website fix in your particular industry?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 07:03 AM PDT

For example, for a construction company, besides building a web-presence and detailing what services you offer, I could create sign-in options for your company's workers so they can all see the documents required for their job so everyone is on the same page, and a calendar to see what jobs they need to be at on what days when they sign in. My boyfriend works construction, and something that keeps happening is that they're sent to jobs and it turns out they're missing equipment, meaning they've just wasted money and gas sending a team somewhere that they can't even do a job at because they're missing several pipes or two-by-fours that they need. I need some attractive features for different industries that would make a business go, "Wow, I need a site that does that!"

Advice needed. Focus or multiple projects?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 10:43 AM PDT

Hi there. I currently work for an employer and have my side business. The business consists out multiple projects (ecommerce/ services/ affiliate) Last year made 200k revenue YTD: 168k Revenue isnt increasing more declining

From jan first 2019 i will probably quit my day job.

Advice is needed about this. I notice that its hard to manage them 5. They are in complete different fields. Is it better to focus on 1 store and grow that one? And kill the rest... traffic sources: seo, adwords (so google only)

Would u try to jungle them all or focus on 1 project? There is 1 store that is doing great and i think i can pull 200k revenue a year if i go for it. Problem is that i dont want to quit the seo sites. Because they bring in free traffic and affiliate income (50-150 p day) but they need attention to keep their rankings and traffic.

Im from the netherlands... English is not my native language... so excuse my french
