At-fault driver's insurance didn't pay the body shop and hasn't closed the claim. Can I sell my car?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 04:28 PM PDT

My car was hit by a commercial truck covered by one of the big companies and was completely at fault. They covered my rental and let me take my car to my shop and said they'd send out someone to hash out the details with the shop after I dropped my car off.

Well, I dropped my car off Tuesday morning. Told the insurance company via email that I was doing that. Picked my car up from the shop tonight. I told them that the insurance should have been by, they replied that they hadn't been by but that it wasn't a big deal, go ahead and take the car and we'll sort the payment later with the insurance. So claim is still open.

Here's the question: I want to sell the car tomorrow in a private party sale to a friend who was waiting for it to get out of the shop. Am I allowed (legally or otherwise) to sell it even though the insurance company still has an open claim? I'm technically made whole but my body shop hasn't been and I don't want him to be screwed over by my idiocy. I'm in Ohio.

Should I get estimate or file claim first?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 09:04 PM PDT

I recently got bumper damage because I hit the right side of a car on a gate. Bumper is popped out a little around the right side and the light is loose too. I want to take it to the repair shop to get an estimate first. Not sure if I should file a claim if the adjustor needs to inspect it or not. I wouldn't file it if it's not too expensive. I have $500 deductible.

Also I am not sure what will happen if I take it to the body shop. So let's say I take it to the body shop and they give me an estimate, should I leave it there and takes pictures of damages and leave the car there for repair and file claim? The body shop I'm planning on going to works with Geico (my co.) I don't want to get denied cause the adjuster didn't get a chance to inspect the damages.

Person merged into lane on driver side, their insurance not covering damages

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 06:26 AM PDT

Driver merged into my lane at fork in road and hit my driver side. Their insurance will not cover damages because I was not "evasively driving" although the driver admitted fault. Police report was filed. Spoke to my insurance and it's covered but I don't want my insurance to go up. What can I do.

How do you get into insurance

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 08:03 AM PDT

Ive given thought and done research into becoming an insurance agent for the last couple years. So please educate me or give me some tips and tricks:

Which line do I want to train and license in? Is there a program to train for all lines available? Where and how should i get my education and licensing? How to start... Is entry level pay "survivable"?

I'm good at sales and I actually think I would be good at this as a career path. My current job is physically demanding, very seasonal, stressful, it's just not working out....

At-fault insurance says only aftermarket parts?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 10:10 AM PDT

I was rear ended at a red light, other driver is 100% at fault, and I needed to get my rear bumper replaced.

My car is a 2013 Audi A6, the repair was finished so I went to check and it was all aftermarket parts, and the guy at the body shop said the other party's insurance doesn't cover OEM parts so they couldn't use it. There was also previous damage on the quarter panel(?) and being rear ended made it worse,(originally it was just a dent, but now its pushed in more so you can see the clip on parts of the bumper, or maybe the aftermarket part didn't fit properly?) but the other insurance company won't cover that either saying being rear ended would never cause that.

I'm not too familiar with how insurance is supposed to go or what rights I have, is this something I just have to deal with? Or can I complain and ask for a re-repair with OEM parts.

The at fault party also only has california minimum as coverage, 5000 property, 15000 injury.

    Located in California, Los Angeles.

Difference in conditions policy vs earthquake policy

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 09:44 AM PDT

Am sourcing insurance quotes and an agent for American Family Insurance just told me that earthquake insurance and landslide (DIC) would be different policies covered under different conditions. I'm getting caught up in the idea that if an earthquake occurs and triggers a landslide (I live in a landslide risk area) I may not be covered. Anyone have experience with this? I don't understand how the two could be separated given the overlap of their effects / causes.

Anyone have a spare CarFax report to run?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 10:52 AM PDT

    Hello r/insurance,

This might not be the best place to ask but I'll post it anyway.

I sold my car back in February 2018 but it remained on my Geico insurance. I called them to try to get a refund or credit back to my account but they can only credit 30 days unless I show proof that I sold the car in February. I filed the title transfer on their website but the DMV won't send email confirmations - they suggest you print the page out for your records but I did not have access to a printer at the time.

If anyone has a spare carfax report, I would be eternally grateful to use it. Please PM me if you might be able to help!

Unable to claim diminished value on my own policy - water damage / replacement engine

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 07:54 AM PDT

I drove through standing water / flooded street during a flash flood while driving my 2014 Prius C. Water got into the engine, which put a hole in the engine, but insurance ran the numbers are are going to fix with a replacement engine (under lifetime warranty by the insurance company). I asked about a diminished value claim since I assume I may not be able to get the same resale value, but the adjuster said that I can't claim diminished value on my own policy. My insurance is with Nationwide. Is this true? Is there anything else I should consider?

I am overall OK with having my car fixed since I've finished paying it off, but am concerned about loss of value if I ever decide to sell.

I just rear-ended someone. Do I need to contact my insurance company?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 05:04 AM PDT

I only have liability and the damage to my vehicle is minimal so I'm not worried about filing a claim. However, I am worried about him lying to his insurance company to avoid being at fault for rear-ending the vehicle in front of him. Here's what happened.

A truck with a trailer locked his brakes to make an illegal u-turn at an Authorized Use Only cut-through in the median, causing a chain reaction. The lady in front braked, causing the vehicle in front of me to strike her, and I reacted too slowly causing me to bump him. The damage to his bumper is negligible (a scratch and a small dent) as is the damage to my front end (a bent license plate and a cracked plastic grill). However, the damage to the front of his vehicle is so bad the insurance company will probably total it, and the rear door of her van was caved in. Neither driver would speak to me at the scene and only after his vehicle was on a tow truck and I was told to leave did the trooper that responded pull me aside and tell me I was lucky he didn't charge me with anything even though I'm responsible for all the damage. Apparently the other two drivers both told the trooper that I hit him and pushed him into her, causing significant damage to both of their vehicles but almost none to mine or his at the point of impact. I disputed this and the trooper seemed to agree with me but the accident report had already been written. So my question is, should I call my company even though I'm not filing a claim just to make my version of events known or will I get that chance no matter what?
