Mediation of lawsuit - how to handle insurance company's request for personal contribution

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 04:16 PM PDT

This is a continuation of this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Insurance/comments/82j8sz/dealing_with_insurance_during_settlement_of_civil/

We are now at the point in the lawsuit where mediation is next week. My insurance has asked me to call them to discuss the issue of personal contribution to the settlement. Aside from saying "I have no money to contribute"... which is unlikely to be productive, how should I approach this discussion with my insurance company? Will they ask for a max number I can contribute? what do you think they will likely ask me to provide?

Maybe i am overthinking this, but I view this like a job interview, I feel like I have one chance to set my position with my insurance company. Is that an unrealistic view on this process?

Why do insurance companies have affiliates?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 01:59 AM PDT

Why does same insurance company sell its policies on a lot of names, for example GEICO seems to sell auto insurance on GEICO casualty company, GEICO general insurance company, GEICO indemnity company, Governmant employees insurance company in Georgia.

Doing a "tear off"/"scrape off" build in Minnesota and trying to figure out insurance options

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 09:21 PM PDT

I'm doing a tear off type build which is pretty popular in this area (Minnesota). It involves demolishing everything but the foundation and first floor joists on an existing home and building a new two story house on top of it.

I close at the end of August on the house we will be tearing off. A builder will carry builders risk and workers comp insurance. I'm trying to figure out how I can be properly insured for the most economical price. I currently have a homeowner policy on my primary residence in another city which we will sell upon build completion.

My insurance agent wants me to get a full homeowner policy on the tear off house for the full replacement value of the future completed build. The house won't be completed for about a year.

Is this the best way to do it? Seems like it is excessive.

Self Employed musician - Cobra or Obamacare advice

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 11:30 PM PDT

I'm just turning 26 and debating between purchasing healthcare through the marketplace or paying a monthly Cobra fee of $281/month. For some background info, I live in Washington State and I'm self-employed. The website for the Washington Healthfinder marketplace is down for maintenance right now so I was hoping someone else might have some insight into how much I would be paying monthly through Obamacare.

I just started doing research on this (very late), thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions. I'm unsure if I need to make a decision now that's going to last for years, or if I can cancel coverage and switch in case I realize the alternative is a better deal for my situation. I'm also new to this subreddit so apologies if my formatting isn't right.

    Health Insurance Plan Exclusions

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 05:02 PM PDT

I'm wondering how I would go about getting access to my health insurance plans excluded services. I contacted my employer's benefits department and they stated they don't have access to that, and that I'd need to contact my insurance provider. I contacted my insurance provider and they said that because they're just an administrator and I'm in a self funded plan/ASO that I'd need to talk to my H.R. department to see the list of exclusions on my plan contract.

My H.R. department just sent the SPD, but that doesn't include a list of excluded services. They again stated that my insurance company would have this information. There is no information on my insurance provider's website either. So at this point I'm stuck.

Who should have this list of excluded services and how do I go about obtaining this?

(This is in NYS if it helps at all)

Do you think $636 a month for car insurance is a little too high? What’s your highest?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 10:51 PM PDT

Here's the deal. I recently moved from Boston after 16 years living there. I drive a 2012 Toyota Camry paying $120 a month for insurance. Been driving for 12 years, clean record, been with Liberty Mutual for 10 years.

I moved to Vegas and asked for a quote here for Liberty Mutual and two different people told me $636 a month $7600 a year. I started laughing out loud, not kidding. In all my years I have never heard anyone (at least with a clean record) paying $7600 a year for a under $10k car. 3 other companies quoted me at $120-140 a month.

Liberty Mutual is the only one giving me this astronomical quote and their excuse is because "Las Vegas is more expensive than Boston" Las Vegas, Nevada.. A state where there is no income tax, where groceries cost half as much, where rent is $1200 for a two bedroom as opposed to $2200, where there are no blizzards, no potholes, no tight parking spots, no rain, no hail, no hurricanes, no parking meters, no tolls. People are moving out of Massachusetts because of insane rise in living expenses yet I'm told Las Vegas is more expensive.

I know people who own high end foreign cars and have bad DUIs and 2-3 speeding tickets and are paying less than $300 a month. What do you think ladies and gents? Is $636, $7600 a year for a $9000 car fair? What was your highest?

    HSA or POS plan?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 04:44 PM PDT

My work is offering me benefits, and I can choose between either plan. I'm 26 and rarely ever sick, so the HSA plan sounds good.. except for the fact that I have depression and want to see a therapist on a regular basis. The HSA plan has such a high deductible & I'd have to pay for each appointment out of pocket. I'm also prescribed trazodone for insomnia. So I'm not sure which plan would be more beneficial for me in the long run. Any advice?

    Motorcycle coverage

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 04:39 PM PDT

So I had coverage on my motorcycle, a 2012 Kawasaki KLR 650. That was all good. I decided to upgrade to a BMW F800 GS. Since this is a bigger bike of course I expected the cost of my policy to go up. I contacted my provider to notify them that I had sold the Kawasaki and purchased the BMW and that I was looking for a new policy on the new bike.

Now, since I am in my 20s and a relatively new motorcycle driver they refused me coverage on the BMW and are telling me I must buy out the policy on the old bike for $350.

This just seems strange to me that I must buy out a policy because they cannot or refuse to cover me on the new bike.

Is there anything I can do?

How do you pay health insurance deductibles?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 07:29 AM PDT

I am only 18, which is why my question may sound ridiculous. But, I've been asking everywhere but no one has given me a straight answer.

I know that a deductible is a set amount you pay first before your insurance starts helping you pay.

But my question is, where or who do you physically pay the deductible to? If your deductible was $88, where or who do you give $88 to? Is it paid through filing taxes? Do you hand the institution that provided medical services $88?

Thank you in advance. I know I sound very naive but that's why I'm here. To learn

How long do I have to apply for my license after passing my exams? (Texas)

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 11:51 AM PDT

I've just passed my Life and Health exam and tomorrow will take Property and Casualty. After passing, how long do I have to apply for my license? Is there an expiration date like 30 days from passing? I want to make sure I don't have to take the exams again.

    Thanks!

Edit: I found out that you have 1 year to apply for your license before you are required to retake the exam.

Question about claiming for damaged laptop.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 04:05 PM PDT

TL:DR Am I obliged to send my damaged laptop to insurance for them to pay out? Even if they have confirmation of damage and an offer to cash settle.

Hi, I have a question regarding an ongoing insurance claim.

After a recent storm that hit my neighbors house, my laptop and the second monitor it was connected to have been damaged. The monitor no longer recognizes any input (from devices that work normally with other displays). My laptop also does not output any signal from the HDMI port (tested on tv's known to be working).

My home insurance wanted to pick up the laptop to inspect, to which I replied asking if I could have it done locally as I didn't want to be inconvenienced by having it taken away for longer than necessary. I have since had a local independant PC shop generate a report to send to the insurers, they also sent me a copy and it clearly outlines the confirmation of the damage and that the HDMI port is not visually damaged (due to dropping etc..) and that the problem is not with the graphics drivers.

So the loss adjusters (on behalf of the insurance) have offered me a cash settlement for the laptop and monitor and told me they cannot send me any money until they have collected the laptop. This is my only backup of my personal data and apart from the HDMI output not working it seems to be in perfect working condition (although the damage has been deemed irreparable). I would prefer to keep the laptop and the cash I receive will be used to buy a new computer, I just wonder if I am legally obligated to send them the laptop before they pay out or if there is anything I can do to keep the laptop (as salvage so to speak).

Any information would be very helpful. Thanks!

    Concerned After Minor Fender “Bump”

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 03:57 PM PDT

Leaving work today, I accidentally ran into the back of a car in front of me. We were both waiting to turn and she started moving forward. A car came around the bend so she stopped and had yet to turn. Unfortunately I didn't get my car halted as quickly. I tapped her rear bumper and we both pulled over to the side of the road. No damage whatsoever to my car. None to hers either, except for a couple of slight paint chips that likely existed before the accident. I was moving less than 5 mph when I hit her.

Well, I started having an enormous panic attack when I got out of the car to confront her. She insisted everything was okay and inspected both of our vehicles. Wiped a little scuff off her bumper. The woman asked for my insurance and took a picture of my card "just in case" - I really don't understand what that means. It has me freaking out.

Because I was panicking so bad I never thought to ask for her insurance, or get her information, or log her license plate number, or even take photographs of our bumpers. I realized my mistake pretty much as soon as she drove off.

I did have a few questions however. Is there a possibility she could go home, smash her bumper, and report that to my insurance company? I'm concerned that the way I handled this situation is going to bite me in the ass.

Is Travelers Insurance going down under??

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 01:31 PM PDT

I work for a re-build company and have finished repairs in multiple homes and have yet to receive payments.. Customers are sending me all correspondence and they keep getting turn rounds... Seems fishy to me. All other insurance companies are paying out accordingly but our customers with Travelers have received almost nothing.

    Too good to be true?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 06:32 PM PDT

My wife was in a car wreck 2 years ago that was not her fault and the other person's insurance paid for everything except for the medical bills.

As of now we are 1 month away from the statute of limitations running out and the insurance company is offering us a buyout of 6000 dollars.

1000 is for medical bills that they claim to never have received, but they want to give us another 5000 Incase there is anything else that might have been missed.

He says that if we sign the release form and take the other 5000 that anything else that pops up would be on us, but despite all of our digging we can't find anything. Is this too good to be true and would it be wise to take the 5000???

How much damage is required before I need to present car insurance to another driver?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 06:06 PM PDT

This takes place in USA, AK. This morning I bumped the back of a car while parallel parking. The driver was in the car and proceeded to get out, yell and cuss at me, and kick my vehicle. I checked and neither vehicle had any damage from the bump, but both had existing dents in various places, and mine has a loose bumper caused by a snow berm years ago. I apologized several times, but the lady wouldn't stop yelling and cussing. Eventually I left because I was late for work at this point, thinking it wasn't a big deal. When I returned to my vehicle 2 hours later it was gone. I called the police and they confirmed the vehicle was impounded as "evidence." They also let me know that there was video footage of me striking the other vehicle two times. They also claimed there was damage to both vehicles. When I brought up the kicking of my vehicle they said they must have missed that part. I will be able to recover my vehicle tomorrow for free thankfully, but the lady is trying to press hit and run charges. To my knowledge, there is no damage, therefor I did not need to present any insurance info. (Ref: AS 28.35.060.) On top of that the lady did not attempt to request or provide any information either. I believe she works for the building that had the camera set up, which is why the police were able to act so swiftly in impounding my vehicle. I have yet to see the footage. I'm an indebted college student about to start my last year of undergrad and I really have no money to spare on an attorney. How can I seek help? I really don't want this to go all the way to court due to the associated costs, but that seems to be where its headed.

TLDR: I bumped a car while parking and the lady is trying to press hit and run. There is no damage as far as I can see, and I did not provide insurance info. Where do I go from here?

PS: I have a perfect driving record up to this point. Not even a ticket for speeding or parking.

Rental car co. found damage, wants me to invoke secondary credit card insurance

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 04:02 PM PDT

I was driving to a family reunion, and two weeks after the trip, the rental car company has contacted me to say that there's damage to the front passenger side wheel well.

I did not purchase additional insurance because I am covered by my Progressive auto insurance.

I did hear some odd noises from that corner of the car, so I figure this is probably legit. Budget are asking me to file a coverage claim with American Express. They say it won't change my credit rate or rating, or my auto insurance.

The Budget claim facility will do most of the paperwork, and I'm still waiting on photos and the paperwork.

Any reason not to move ahead? My instinct is that this is just how this is supposed to work, and I'm lucky to have this feature on my American Express card.

Would there be a reason to contact my auto insurance company about this?

Anything else I should ask of Budget before moving ahead?

Any other advice very much appreciated.

Convoluted situation after my car was totaled last night.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 04:00 PM PDT

So last night I was rear ended on the interstate. Long story short, Highway patrol got the other guys information, but it hasn't made it to Progressive (My insurance) yet with the accident report. Insurance has so far paid for a rental for three days and promised to pay for my tow truck.

So an adjuster came to assess the vehicle, declared it totaled and priced it out- ultimately, with my $1000 deductible, I still owe the bank about $650. They say that once everything goes through, I get that $1000 back. However, I also have a 'Total Pay out' coverage for my vehicle, meaning I get 25% of the value of the vehicle. And I definitely need that for a down payment on a new vehicle.

Ultimately, my question is; should I go ahead and get this all done through my insurance (Progressive), or should I hold out for the other insurance company to take over the situation? First time I've really had to go through this, so I apologize if this isn't as clear or concise as it could be.

    Thank you for your time

    Extending insurance past graduation (Canada)

[Renters insurance] Has anyone heard of Occupant Shield by Cambridge Solutions?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 02:33 PM PDT

My new apartment requires us to get renters insurance. They list the above as a source on the welcome letter, but I wanted to get it through another.

Tried Progressive and Lemonade, but apparently they don't cover what my apartment requires. Not sure what Progressive missed, but Lemonade's policy doesn't include bug, water, or pet coverage which my apartment apparently requires. (They need me to have a letter signed by the agent that acknowledges the apartment's policy requirements.)

So I checked out the website of Occupant Shield, and it just seems a little sketch—old and vague. Plus, their policy starts out $5 more expensive than what I would've had at Progressive. Mostly, I'm worried that I'm actually signing up for a renters insurance that isn't at all on my side and will work against me in every claim.

So has anyone heard of this renters insurance? Is it possible that I'm overreacting just because it's the insurance that my apartment is suggesting? Should I press my luck with other insurers?

Still receiving medical bills from HCP almost 2 years after services for work related accident

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 02:32 PM PDT

I posted this in legal advice and someone suggested I cross-post it here. I'm not sure what flair suits the post the best.

I was hoping I could get some help in finding any specific portions of the Washington State legal code that could help me prove that I should not still be receiving these bills. Almost 2 years ago, I was involved in a motor vehicle accident that I was deemed zero percent at fault for. I was in a work vehicle stopped at a red light when I was rear-ended by a distracted driver. I was not immediately treated for any injury, but saw medical professionals shortly after to be x-rayed and treated for whiplash and neck muscle spasm. I received 10 sessions of physical therapy and prescriptions from the Health Care Provider. Since the services ended in December 2016, I have been receiving bills for the services directly from the HCP, despite the fact that they are supposed to be billing the self-insured company's insurance.

I got in contact with the workplace (that I have not been with for around the same 2 years), and they connected me with the insurance company, who told me that the HCP repeatedly never filed the correct information when requesting payment from the insurance company, so their bills were denied payment. I was also told the insurance company never fought the other driver for the money to pay for my medical bills, that they might pursue it now, and had my statement RETAKEN more than a year and a half after the accident (they had already taken my statement after the accident). They told me a few days later that they connected with the health care provider and that I should no longer be receiving the bills that explicitly state "PLEASE PAY NOW". I am worried these bills will be sent to collections in my name, even though the insurance company told me that is illegal. I know it is illegal, but despite my efforts to already contact the HCP, they have been completely inept at helping me clear this up and have taken weeks at a time to return phone calls only to tell me they don't know anything. I was hoping someone could help me find specific legal code that says they should not be billing me directly when the correct workplace insurance information was given at all steps of the medical care process, and that they cannot send my bills to collections. I know that I should not be the one at fault for these bills, I was hit at no fault to my own and did nothing wrong. I have been told multiple times by all parties involved that I should not have to worry about this, but here I am 2 years later, having just received a bill yesterday. All help is appreciated, thank you.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 11:42 AM PDT

so i bought a dishwasher last week from the brick

    made by Whirlpool.

we installed and confirmed everything was done properly. it leaked from the kitchen, damaged parts of the ceiling in the basement, and leaked down.

today the technician from whirlpool confirmed that the draining piece in the dishwasher needs replacement and it caused the leak.

who should i blame for all of this? should i talk to my house insurance? or should i resolve it with the brick and ask for a compensation. or is it Whirlpools fault. any advice is appreciated.

    Denial and appeal

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 11:06 AM PDT

All, thanks for reading and any advice you can give.

I have occipital neuralgia and chronic migraines (all following an MVA 5 years ago and the MVA coverage is done). I recently saw a doctor who believes that occipital nerve decompression surgery is my best bet for relieving the occipital neuralgia as nerve blocks have previously, temporarily helped. Unfortunately, BCBS believes this surgery to be "experimental" and denied it. My doctor did do a peer-to-peer but having a plastic surgeon that operates on peripheral nerves explaining this procedures and costs/benefits to an internist did not work.

I appealed the first denial and was rejected, however, aside from the literature I've received from my doctor (his own published works) is there anything else any of you can recommend that I do to increase my chances of appealing?

I know it is a long shot, but it's going to cost me 15K minimum to pay for this out of pocket so I want to exhaust all options first. Thank you all so much in advance!
