Carport managed by HOA fell onto my car during storm. What might I be able to expect? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 11:40 PM PDT So, unfortunately, a storm ripped our carport up into the air and it came back down on my (older) car. One of the beams broke my front light and dented in the hood and front bumper. The carport is still on the car, though, so it could be worse than I can see right now... Since it's an older car, I only have liability insurance on it. Our HOA has insurance but I don't have any of the details yet. The on-call person with the property management company wasn't our property manager, so ours is supposed to call me in the morning. (To clarify: this is a condo community where they're all individually owned but the parking situation is very similar to most apartment complexes and the carports are the responsibility of our HOA.) I'm nearly positive that the damage is enough to total it because its KBB value is only $900-1000 and I'm not ignorant to the costs of repairs like these. Looking preliminarily online for cars, I know I wouldn't be able to replace my car for something as nice for that much. It's a 2004, only has 93k miles on it, and runs great. Everything sub $1,500 is either from the 90s and/or has 150-250k+ miles. I'm not entirely opposed to driving around with a dented in hood but I would need the light replaced at a minimum. Would that mean I would have to salvage it in order to get the money to just fix the light? Is it even in the realm of possibilities to get $1,500-2,000 in order to replace it for something more of like kind? Is there any advice you can give me? Thank you for your help! I've never had anything like this happen before. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Aug 2018 12:18 PM PDT I had a diminished value question 6 months ago, and reading the posts on this sub was helpful, though I've noticed almost all the diminished value posts follow the same pattern:
To help figure this out I googled to find all the DV posts I could and catalogued them here (along with a bunch of posts that didn't have DV info). The table shows that some people get very little, but some people do get something (depending on state), and there are reddit links attached to read the full story. If this seems interesting you could help in two ways:
Use the form I created here to submit more info. The form is so it's easy to add to the google sheet table - if there's a better way to collect info let me know, or skip the form and use comments to add more info. I'm hoping collecting some of this info in one place could help change some the DV commentary in these posts. [link] [comments] |
Cyclist hit and run caught on dashcam Posted: 08 Aug 2018 06:03 AM PDT I just had a cyclist barrel across an intersection (from a sidewalk after the red hand was solid), the problem is I never saw him until my light turned green, I proceeded to go and he crashed into the front quarter of my car. The individual got angry and started posturing towards me saying he yelled at me down the pathway to "wait 1 minute" for him to cross (even if I did wait, the car on the other side of me would have never heard/seen him and would have pulled out and got hit). He rode off without me getting any information. With this proof am I off the hook of being at fault with insurance? Is this something that if I claim it will increase my rates a considerable amount over that of what it would cost out of pocket? This is Massachusetts if that matters. Posted: 08 Aug 2018 10:17 PM PDT So I make 40% of the commission on anything I sell. And I make another 40% every time it renews. Does that sound fair? What do some of you guys make? If you don't mind sharing... Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
How should I claim damage to my Vehicle? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 09:14 PM PDT A month ago I ran over a deer in my car, and 2 weeks after my front bumper cover was damaged and torn half off. I have been hesitant to make a claim due to my clean record and zero tickets. My car is 3 years old and was spotless before the deer incident. How should I claim this to the insurance to help prevent my rates from going up? What's the difference between a Hit and Run claim vs hitting an alive deer? The Damage can pass for either incident and my body shop lined up is very discreet. The bumper was torn in the middle and the bracket the bumper cover clips into is in half just about. Property Management Company wants to be added as "additional insured" on Renters Policy after fire. Posted: 08 Aug 2018 07:54 PM PDT I have lived in an apartment community for 5 years now. There was a major fire in one of the building's last week and now every resident received a notice today about mandatory insurance and that both the management company and the property management must be listed on the policy as "additional insured". I have had renters insurance currently well ahead of their requirements, with the apartment listed as the dwelling. I only have 4 months left on my current lease, and I have no intentions of renewing, but they are threatening fines in addition to our rent every month until coverage is provided. I am incredibly hesitant on adding anybody to my policy as "additional insured", especially my own landlord. This seems shady and more of a CYA thing, but I don't want to pay their fines if I have coverage now like everybody should have had. Shouldn't I list the property management as "additional interest", so they get notifications if I lapse or cancel? This company is being incredibly sensitive about their name being used at all and have already made two funds set up for donations take the name of the community off for "liability" reasons, so I see a fight incoming over this. I need a little advice because my own insurance agent already told me "let me get back to you" because they think by adding them to the policy, my rate will have to be adjusted. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Aug 2018 07:32 PM PDT Hello. I am going to have to resign from my job this week due to them not being handicap accessible. I need surgery first week of September, but can't continue working until then because my company is located on a second floor with no handicap accessibility and they are refusing to give accommodations. I am going to be electing for COBRA, but the company said they have 30 days to send me the notice, so I will not be able to get on COBRA before surgery. The hospital said I will have to pay out of pocket. I know the purpose of COBRA is uninterrupted coverage, but will the insurance company re-imburse me for the surgery once I pay the COBRA premiums? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
How much will my car insurance go up for my first accident? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 07:31 PM PDT Hey guys, Just a few hours ago I got into an accident and did the whole swapping insurance and licenses for an accident I caused and it went well. Now that it's over, I'm wondering how much my insurance will go up, I'll feel terrible if my parents have to pay more for my own dumb mistake. (I'm new to driving in case that affects the way insurance rates change) Summary of accident: there was a large street and I was on one side of it waiting to make a left out of a parking lot. The lane going right stopped after a while and after I looked right to make sure nobody was going left I made my left turn only to clip someone's right back tire. He made a u turn and I slowed down and we pulled over to exchange information. Aftermath: his back right rim is dented inwards and there are a few scratches along it. My car is scratched and a little chipped around the front right light. Lmk if you guys need visuals, thanks in advance for the help! Location is Walnut Creek, California [link] [comments] |
TX - Possible Workplace Hernia, Workers Comp. Questions Posted: 08 Aug 2018 07:01 PM PDT Hello, apologies if I go a little off topic or in detail that is unneeded, I'm crossposting this with /r/insurance. This is in US, Texas, and I kind of need some help in the how to approach possible workers compensation issues. I do not have a complaint with my employer or medical provider, but want to make sure I'm approaching this correctly. Texas gives this website, and I've based some things off that, but I'm feeling a little overwhelmed: http://www.tdi.texas.gov/wc/employee/index.html I recently (2 weeks ago) had a period of heavy work at my job where I typically do not do much lifting. For two days, I felt a bit sore, and then recovered a bit over the weekend. The heavy lifting was picked up again the next week, which resulted in the soreness coming back more strongly. At first I thought it was a pulled muscle in my leg/groin. It started to feel like it was more focused in my abdomen and testicles, so I became concerned about a hernia, and immediately notified my employer (verbally) and scheduled a visit with my doctors office. My first visit was not with my primary care physician, but with the same office. He could not conclude if it was a hernia or a pull/strain, and recommended I come back in 7-10 days if the pain had not lessened or I was still concerned. The paid has lessened, but it's still not gone, and I want to reschedule for followup to be sure. I also need a few days in advance to schedule with my doctors office. I want to be sure this is not a hernia, and is in fact some sort of strain. He did mention hernias can be slight enough they are not obvious. There were physical signs that share similarities with torn muscles, strains, and hernias. I know that I need to notify my employer within 30 days if I have a workplace injury (and that I should do so in writing), or I can "lose out" on my ability to claim this if it is later determined to be a hernia. I do have a few questions, and would appreciate any corrections, advice, or anything I'm missing.
Things I am less clear on:
I feel like I'm possibly missing something or not understanding things, and want to make sure I don't wind up with an undiagnosed hernia I need to pay for in the future. TL;DR: Possible hernia on work time
What's the TL:DR for a possibly longer diagnostic than 30 days when I have 30 days to notify of an injury I don't know if I have? Does my doctor count, or do I need to see a workers compensation doctor in that time? (If they are not one, I don't know yet) Thank you for your time, I appreciate any thoughts. [link] [comments] |
Insurance refusing to negotiate settlement offer Posted: 08 Aug 2018 06:04 PM PDT My 2010 Honda Civic EX with 88k miles got severe hail damage, totaling the car. Geico has offered me a settlement for $7,100. I believe this is a low offer, as KBB ranges the cars value from $7,400-$9,000 in my area. Any of the Honda Civics I can find in my area are roughly $8,600 from the dealer. The auto adjuster is claiming this settlement offer is not a negotiation, and that I must get an independent appraisal for the car if I disagree with their offer. Is there anything I can do? My original adjuster moved me to his supervisor who also refuses to negotiate a different deal other than the one being offered. Are they really not allowed to negotiate a different settlement offer? Other insurance isn't accepting liability. What can I do now? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 11:38 AM PDT I parked my car (#1) on the street. When I went to leave a while later there was a car (#2) who parallel parked behind me. They were 1 inch away and there were scratches all over my bumper. Damage on my car matched the damaged on car #2 front bumper. Car #2 was also touching the car behind it (#3) meaning car #2 squeezed into a spot much too small and hit my car and another. I called the police and they left a note for car #2 to contact me. She called the next day saying she doesn't remember hitting my car. I tell her I have pictures that say otherwise so she tells me to get quotes, which I do (mistake #1). After I give her quotes I never hear from her again. I call my insurance and ask how to proceed and they say to go through her insurance (mistake #2). She mentioned her insurance carrier during our first convo and with that and her name I got her policy #. Her insurance seemed helpful so I thought this was getting taken care of. I didn't hear from them for a few weeks so I asked for a status update and they said they weren't accepting liability. The narrative they're going with is Car #3 hit her car (#2) and pushed it into my car (#1) causing the damage. I told them they were wrong because car #3 was there before I parked there (iconic car and its hard to miss), her car wasn't touching mine, AND the damage doesn't match. There are scratches going along the bumper which is congruent with the sweeping motion of a car (#2) trying to parallel park not being pushed into me. I put the claim through my insurance and they did zero footwork. They haven't taken measurements and initially went with the narrative of the other insurance. I told them they were wrong and they "took note of that" but haven't done anything. Now we're at a standstill and both insurances want the contact info of car #3 and the police report. The police report was actually an "event report" which I can only get through subpoena and the officer has been blowing off my calls/emails so thats a bust. Car #3 lives in the neighborhood but Im reluctant to retrieve and share that info because I don't want them to get screwed over. Should I just give the info to my insurance and give car #3 a heads up? Is there anything else I can do? [link] [comments] |
How bad is it to have a 3rd Homeowners association claim in 8 years? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 05:06 PM PDT I have read that if you file too many claims they drop you. I have lived here 14 years. I filed two relatively small claims 7 and 8 years ago. I had a leak in my roof. The first claim they said it was a one time thing due to ice build up and did not fix the leak just basically painted. Second time leaked again. They raised my deductible after the second claim. My siding now has hail damage and part of the siding fell off. It needs to be replaced. One small portion has the insulation exposed. There has been alot of heavy rain this year. So I need to call them tomorrow. Given all the rain, it may be a while until I can get a contractor out here. I have a small town house. Its only 1260 Square feet and not an end, but this is several thousand dollars. The first claim they gave me so little money I had trouble getting anyone to do the work and had to go back to them for more money. I have Travellers Insurance. Is a 3rd claim in 8 years (lived here for 14 years ) a problem? I expect them to raise my rates or my deductible after this. [link] [comments] |
Turned away by primary doctor because of insurance Posted: 08 Aug 2018 10:55 AM PDT Yesterday I had a appointment to see my primary care physician. I showed the receptionist my insurance card and she told me they don't accept my insurance. I responded that I could pay cash, because I wanted to see a doctor. She told me that it was against the law for them to let someone pay cash if they have insurance. Is this true? Is our system so broken that a doctor will turn down a potentially sick patient who is willing to pay cash because they mistakingly bought garbage insurance? It seems absurd. I still pay almost 300 per month for health insurance that is actually preventing me from seeing my doctor. [link] [comments] |
Can health insurance go after car accident settlement? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 03:20 PM PDT Posting for a friend. He was recently hit by a car while riding his bike. Bike is trashed and he has a few scrapes but other than that he's fine. No other injuries, back pain, head trauma, etc etc. His medical bills came out to $1800 (due to X-rays and hospital visit) but he has health insurance so his copay is $125 for everything. The driver's car insurance paid for his bike and also wants to settle with him to release bodily injury liability for $2500. He wants to accept but is worried his health insurance will want part of his payout to recover their losses. Does he have anything to worry about? Edit: Bike as in Bicycle not motorcycle [link] [comments] |
Advice/legal entitlement: Lien sale of my car + Storage fee of $125/day Posted: 08 Aug 2018 03:07 PM PDT Script received from shop: This is to inform you that your CAR (he did not say this) has been here since February 2018. There is already tear down fee that are owed. The car was deemed a total loss by the insurance company. Starting the calendar day Friday Aug. 10, 2018 we will be charging $125.00 storage fee per day. And that we will start the process of a lien sale next week. Situation: I am still negotiating with the insurance company for a settlement amount. What should I do? Who pays this? Is it okay for them to take the car? If I pay this now, should I just keep the car at the shop? Thanks for your help [link] [comments] |
Does buying insurance locally require you to change addresses? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 01:53 PM PDT If I recently move and purchase car insurance from a local agency, am I required to change my driver's license? I just recently moved from Georgia to South Carolina, where the property taxes are a lot higher. I notice a lot of people who live here have GA licenses and their vehicle registered to GA. I'm currently leasing a room here, and there's no official document trail that states I live here besides my workplace being located here. [link] [comments] |
Comparing Auto-Insurance Quotes Posted: 08 Aug 2018 01:32 PM PDT I [22/M] just recently moved to a different state and now shopping for car insurance. I currently drive a Nissan Maxima '12 and still making payments on it. I've had 3 accidents within the last 5 years (2014,15,16) all listed as at-fault (though I would argue otherwise). I've received two quotes: one from Progressive and the other from Auto State. They're basically the same price, but come with different benefits and whatnot. Basically, I need help reading what each quote is specifically telling me, what the terms mean, and guidance in choosing which policy makes more sense. I would love to post my quotes on here, but I'm not sure that's a smart idea or even allowed. Is there anyone who would be willing to help me directly? Things to consider: potential discounts, term length, etc. Edit 1: Or if anyone would like to ask me questions, please feel free. Edit 2: I've decided to post specifics due to the vagueness. Also, I noticed that between the two State Auto quotes, the discounts applied are different. Would I be able to ask them to apply the difference? [link] [comments] |
Personal/Business or Commercial car insurance use? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 01:28 PM PDT Hey, so I've moved provinces in Canada to start my gig as a professional photographer. I've actually obtained part-time employment from a company that does car photography and I need to drive to different locations/dealerships on a daily basis to take shots of other vehicles. Anyways, spoke to an insurance rep today with a company. He told me that I shouldn't be taking personal insurance, but rather commercial. I don't know much about insurance, but used to work in the financial world and knew that commercial typically implies that the vehicle or tool in itself is being used commercially (cement truck, bulldozer, etc.). I'm just using my car to drive to work (wherever that is on that day), park and take pictures of other vehicles. Not sure how to approach this? [link] [comments] |
About to quit work. What do I do about insurance? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 01:18 PM PDT Good day good people of r/insurance. I'll be quitting my job in late September to move back to my home town in Seattle. I have health insurance now through work but once I quit, what do I do? I'm a young adult, healthy but paranoid and without a lick of knowledge about how this part of adulting works. I'd like to be financially protected against life's worst. My main fear is dental since I don't have the best nightly rituals (boo, I know). Is Afflack something to consider? Anything helps, thanks [link] [comments] |
Not sure if company sucks or... Posted: 08 Aug 2018 05:19 AM PDT So I got home yesterday and got two postcards from my insurance company. These are open face cards that list my name, address, and policy number on the card. In addition to that information the first one openly states that I was late on a payment, the next one states that they are cancelling my policy. This is open for anyone to read on the outside of the postcard. For one. The policy was due on the 1st (Wed). We paid it on the 1st, the postcards were mail both on the 2nd (Thurs) and I just got them on the 7th. I called and confirmed they got the payment yesterday and stated my complaints about the postcard thing and they simply said "that's just how we do it". Is this a bad company in the way the handle my information and the way they respond to me or is this just me being a bit to needy? [link] [comments] |
How do you get an open perils(all risk) renters insurance policy? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 11:59 AM PDT Location: California. I asked my renters insurance if they had a open perils policy and they just sent me a form to schedule property at a huge premium. I don't think that is what I'm looking for. It seems ridiculous to schedule every single household item. I've ran a few insurance quotes and no where does anyone offer open perils. Does this product even exist for renters? [link] [comments] |
Neighbor claims I scratched his car (x-post r/legaladvice) Posted: 08 Aug 2018 07:17 AM PDT (Boston, MA) A couple of weekends ago, I took a bus out of the state for the weekend with my friend. She came over to park in my driveway, which is pretty narrow. Usually my neighbor and I park diagonally from each other so we can both get in and out, since the driveway is wider than the space in the curb. There is enough room to park both cars next to each other, but only barely. Anyway, this time I pulled my car forward next to my neighbor's to make room for my friend's car behind mine, and then we left. I didn't hear or see anything that might have indicated that my car touched my neighbor's car. I left for the weekend. This past Friday, my neighbor wanted me to come out and look at his car, as he claimed that it had been damaged when I pulled forward for the weekend. There is a thin, ~5 inch scratch on his driver's side passenger door. He says that it will be $580 to repaint the whole door (did not want to provide me with anything in writing with this quote on it), and wants me to pay out of pocket. I don't think my car has matching damage on it, and I also think it's sus that he doesn't want to provide me with a real quote. Also claimed that one of us would still have to pay the full $580 even if insurance was involved - I was driving the car as a part-time driver on my mom's insurance. Should I try to dispute this? How can he prove that I did it and that it didn't happen at some other point over the weekend I was gone? Will my insurance go up? I've never had a ticket or moving violation since I started driving 3 years ago. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
