PayPal was hacked and they charged 4100 euro to my debit card. How do I proceed?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 09:51 AM PDT

On Sunday at around 2:00 AM I got a call from PayPal from the automated fraud line asking if the charge 4100 euros on my account was valid or if it was unauthorized. I quickly tapped the 2 and was thanked for helping keep PayPal "safe". I checked my account and saw the charge and that they would have the money in their account in a few days. I tried to open a claim on PayPal but the claim was already opened with the message; Spoof claim created by IVR GMC or something along those lines. I googled it and I saw many posts of people opening claims over the phone and then having PayPal instantly close the case and refuse to let the person speak to anyone. What's my course of action? Why did PayPal allow a payment from a different IP on the other side of the world for 4100 euros go through when I said it was unauthorized? I have 2FA on my PayPal and was supposed to receive a text every time I login? Any help would be appreciated.

Tl;dr: PayPal got hacked and I was charged 4100 euros and a claim was already opened with the message "Spoof case created by IVR GMC" what does this mean and how do I get my money back?

Edit: I am American and currently live in the US, many people were confused but the payment made was in Euro

Edit 2: I called PayPal and they investigated, I got a full refund!

(NL)(Long) 3 years ago i was in a accident with another car and both of the insurances said it was not my fault. Now 3 years later the guy is suing me with a whole other story and my insurance screwed me over

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 01:35 AM PDT

Long time lurker first time poster, advise needed and thanks for reading

So 3 years ago i was in a car accident with somebody. He was driving over the speedlimit on a icy road and could not brake in time and ended up hitting my tail. Everything went fine and no one got hurt. We filled in the insurance papers and went our way. Couple months later the insurances talked it out and told me that i was in the right and closed the case. I got my money, fixed my car happy ending. Atleast that's what i tought.

3 years later i get a note from the court that i'm being summoned because the guy is suing me. He changed the whole story saying that i tried to pass him from left and tried to slide my car into a parking ( wich is impossible because the road was way to small to fit 2 cars next to each other ) and he had no time to react. He even changed some information on the original insurance papers and tried to make it look like it was my fault. So i call my insurance and tell them that he is trying to get free money from me and they told me not to worry and they will go to court for me and defend the case.

Now i got another note stating that we lost the case because no one showed up to court. I called my insurance again asking them what happend and they said that they are gonna pay the guy because they are to scared to defend because they think the guy will win anyways. But they never paid him and now my bank accounts are frozen. When i called the insurance again i get a lady on the phone and ask her to put me trough to the guy who has been "helping" me and she does. Then the phonecall disconnects and i think o well it happens and call back. Then i get the same lady on the phone and when i asked for the guy again, she told me she doesn't know anybody by that name(??) and when i asked again she told me he is on vacation and will be back on monday.

I personally think that they forgot to go to the court meeting and now i'm getting screwed over, any advise on what i can do now and is there a possibility i can get back to these people? ( guy suing me and insurance )

Edit : thank you all for the tips and information! I will talk to my attorney about the situation and if I have anything that I can share, I will let you know! Thanks again!

Went from making $11,000 a year to almost $70,000, unsure of how to proceed.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 05:56 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I recently went from making $12/hr, working 25 hours a week, to $30/hr / 50-52 hours a week with OT. My weekly paychecks have more than quadrupled, as my take home pay every week (after deductions) is around $1100, compared to the ~$230 I was looking at before. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit, but I've gotten used to living on next to nothing. I'm still a bit floored to see a comma on my paychecks. Having said that, I only spend $200 a week or so.

I have 18% going to a traditional 401(k) and 4% to Roth. No employer match. Current 401(k) balance is just over $3,000. I do, also, have a pension plan...

Car: Paid off. Not in the best condition, 186k miles... will need to be replaced within the next few months.

Car insurance: $80 a month. Minimal coverage.

Gas: Probably $180 a month. I commute 60 miles every day.

    Food: $300 a month? Maybe.

Health insurance: Fully covered through work. No deductible, excellent coverage.

    Rent: None. Boyfriend owns home.

I jacked up my credit when I was young, and I've been actively trying to repair it for over a year. My credit scores on transunion and equifax are in the 640s, but experian is showing 586. I've paid all of my collection accounts, opened 3 credit cards and maintained 100% payment history. I have a secured credit card (now $3,000) that I've been putting $500 a week on, as a way of saving... I have $3,500 in a savings account, $3,000 on the secured card, and no officlal debt.

Should I put more into my 401k while i have such minimal expenses, or a normal savings account for emergencies?

Cashier's Check Lost or Stolen in Mail

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 09:44 AM PDT

A friend needed to send a check to a business. For unknown reasons, she elected tosend a cashier's check. She took it to the post office but it was closed so she just wrapped the check into a piece of notebook paper and put it in an ordinary envelope with a regular post stamp. It's been 10 days and the check has supposedly not been received by the business. It was for $12,000.

I've read several articles on how to cancel a cashier's check and maybe its cognitive dissonance or shock or articles have too much legalese, but I can't wrap my mind around what exactly she should do. Should she purchase a surety bond? Or is it too late for that? What if the check is stolen and cashed? Can you please explain it in simple terms?

Is there anything the postal service can do to track the mail? No tracking was on the letter. Just a plain stamp.

Yeah, I do realize the stupidity involved here is fairly epic.

Does hiring a driver make sense?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 07:15 AM PDT

My wife's business is now 3 years old, 100% word of mouth. She is currently spending anywhere between 2-4 hours per day driving and not able to get work done from the car. There literally aren't enough hours in the day and some of her work is getting less attention than it deserves, we believe she's lost some business. On top of that, a good amount of personal and business errands are not able to get done. We're thinking of hiring someone for ~$40k as a driver/runner/security. I should mention there is some danger to what she does, she operates in some not so great neighborhoods, at night so having someone around is peace of mind.Context:

    • GOI ~$500k
    • Expenses ~$168k
    1. 1 Personal Assistant
    2. 2 Associates
    3. 1 Office

I know it sounds ridiculous, because it is, but for me, I figure her hours are better spent working than driving and honestly having protection at night is pretty important for me. (Uber is not a solution). I should note the 2nd associate is brand new so I'm including her as an expense but I'm not increasing our GOI to reflect the additional revenue we'll be able to bring in.Lastly, due to my business I can potentially use him for site supervision, it's not a lot of work but it'll add to the hours.I'd really like to hear everyone's thoughts.Thank you all and Happy 4th of July!

Just lost car, only $600 to my name. How do I go forward?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 09:56 AM PDT

So over the weekend my car completely quit on me. I wasn't too worried because I had a little bit of money saved so I had it towed to a local shop. After 2 hours of inspecting it, they could find no reason whatsoever that it would start and then immediately die.

For the past few days I've been stranded out of state and my dad just picked me up to bring me back home.

I was planning to start school in August and move in with my boyfriend where rent and all utilities would be $400/month.

I have about $1200/month coming in right now so I think I can buy another car by the end of the month. My issue is trying to save an appropriate amount while having to utilize Uber to get back and forth to both of my jobs.

I'm worried I'll have to push school back another semester (it's been two years since I've been enrolled) and set my progress back even further.

I think that if I'm able to get a car by the end of July I should still be on schedule to at the very least move. I'll just be behind in my savings. I guess at this point, I've been a little blindsided and I don't really know what exactly my next steps are.

My dad told me I should try to get a car loan and just buy a used car but because my parents forgot to pay a medical bill a year ago and I didn't know about it, my credit dropped from a 720 to a 590 two months ago.

How does insurance details get sorted out in an emergency?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 11:21 AM PDT

I have insurance through my employer. Am I supposed to figure out what hospital is in-network and commit it to memory in case of emergency?

It seems like a lot of work, especially in an emergency situation. It also implies that whenever I travel somewhere I have to figure out my in-network hospitals at the destination.

It seems a little ridiculous so I just want to check if that's actually the case.

Check I wrote to myself got flagged as fraudulent, now Chase is closing my account.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 06:04 AM PDT

Hi everyone, So got myself into quite a predicament here. Sorry, it's long.

I have two separate accounts from two different banks. I am currently on a trip abroad.

    Timeline:

June 28th:I was trying to repay a small debt I owed to my brother from my Chase account (he'd lent me money). I didn't have the funds in it to do so, so wrote a check to myself from the smaller bank that had sufficient funds and wanted to deposit it into my Chase (so I could pay him since all his bank info was already stored in my chase account). Seeing as I'm abroad, I asked my brother to deposit the check, and so he put his name on the back as the endorser (which as far as I know is completely legal, right ?).

-I guess one of the banks noticed this, and things happened behind the scenes that ended with the smaller bank attempting to contact me by phone to sort this, which lead nowhere as I am abroad.

-July 3rd, I logon and notice that Chase has rejected the check and charged me a $12 fee. The message that shows for that transaction is basically "ask the other bank".

So I logon to the website of the smaller bank, and see that I am locked out of the account. I call up the number it tells me to call, and give them all the info and unlock my account.

-I then ask them why the check was rejected. They look into it and come back with "when the name at the back was different from those on the front (mine since it was a check from me to me), it go "flagged", they attempted to call me, couldn't get in touch so stopped it from going though just in case.

-Meh, who cares right ? I then send a message to Chase saying this was a big misunderstanding, and please refund me the $12.

-I get an answer back saying "you account has been disabled, contact Fraud prevention". Because of the time difference, I have to push it back to today (huge mistake by the way)

-July 4th: I call the fraud prevention and they basically tell me "Your account is being completely shut down, and there is nothing you can do about it. Don't try to ever open an account with Chase again. Fudge you very much"

    What. The. Frick?

So, like what can I do?? This account is where everything gets done !! Where my salary goes, where my rent and daycare is paid from, where all my other credit cards get paid from ... everything ! And I also still have a chunk of money in there !!

I have one credit card that needs paying by the 10th, my rent which was supposed to come out of Chase on the 1rst (it shows as paid, by I fear this total shutdown will result in the landlord thinking I'm stiffing him).

    Please help !

TL;DR: wrote sufficiently funded check to myself, brother deposited it, but it got flagged as fraudulent. Chase now treating me like criminal and shutdown my account. What can do ?

Edit: Consensus is that I'm a complete moron, and unwittingly committed a type of fraud, doing myself out of a bank account for who knows how long. Despite the check being written from me, to me, with sufficient funds, Shouldn't have let my brother put his name on the back.

Edit 2: Thanks to everyone, I guess even the people who downvoted me for being ignorant. I know better now.

My employer has been underpaying me for quite some time. What can I do? (AUS)

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 07:22 AM PDT

Just looking to get some advice on how I should proceed.

I have recently discovered that my employer has been underpaying me since 15/08/2014. My job comes under the Clerical Award Level 1, which has 3 year levels. Since 15/08/2014 I have been paid the Level 1 Year 1 rate when I should have been getting the Level 1 Year 3 rate.

I got in contact with Fair Work who confirmed I should have been on the level 1 Year 3 pay rate. I brought the issue up with my employer and advised them what Fair Work had told me. They bumped my pay rate up to Level 1 Year 2.

Next step I took was to get all my pay slips from when I should have been given a raise and compare the pay rate with Fair Works minimum wage advice. In total, the amount I am missing is roughly around the $12000 mark (I have not included holiday leave loading in this amount, nor have I taken tax into account)

Should I bring the issue up with my employer again? Can they fire me for trying to get this money? Should I get a lawyer involved? Should I let Fair Work take care of it?

Thank you in advance for any help you offer.

Edit: Thankyou for all of your opinions. I am currently looking for a new job. I will be contacting fairwork again today and getting the ball rolling.

Help! Not sure how to deal with home owner's insurance and I'm away from my home for the summer

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 07:51 PM PDT

I've left my home for the summer to visit family. I have friends who are living in my home to watch over things. This week my town got smacked hard with rain and a few unexpected things have happened that I've not seen before in my home. The drain in our basement backed up into the basement twice (so far) with rain expected again tomorrow. We have a parquet wood floor across the finished part of our basement, areas rugs, and baseboards that my friends are telling me are most jeopardized.

From the insurance side, I have Liberty mutual. I've called to initiate a claim but no claim estimate has been done yet and one is not scheduled as I write this. I'm convinced that the wood floors will probably not survive, even though my friends have worked their tails off removing water with a shopvac.

I need help on how to manage the insurance company, and how to manage the work/cleanup while remote from my home. What i'm most stressed about now is that I don't feel like I have a good grasp of how to control this situation AND I don't think I want to be taking queues on what should happen next from the insurer.

    Thanks!

tl;dr I'm away for the summer and my basement is flooding a bit and ruining hardwood floors. I need guidance on how to manage the insurance company and to understand how to avoid getting the wrong end of a bad deal.

20% down home loan and still paying a fee?!

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 11:15 AM PDT

I'm about to sell my house and use that money to buy another house (contingency). Im thinking about using my previous loan officer, but she's telling me if I put 20% down, I still have to pay a fee to get a lower rate. But if I put down 25% down, I get an even better rate but no fee.

I thought the standard was 20% down and you don't have to pay PMI or fee. What's the deal?

$7,000 in debt and car just got stolen this morning. Worst 4th July/Day.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 04:24 PM PDT

So I've been living with my aunt for the past 2 months since my parents kicked me out 3 months ago. I was financing a car but since I became homeless in the first month I decided to get rid of the car which was $5,000 underwater and decided to buy a beater cash for $2,000. This morning as I was eating breakfast I heard my car start and they took off with it in the morning.. I feel so hollow and empty right now I have no family for support or any good income to support this disaster. I don't know what to do anymore I called the Police for a claim and not sure my insurance will cover it since I haven't even had the car for a month yet and haven't payed the first insurance bill yet. I thought I was on the right track to getting my life straight until all this happened to me. My family left me and I have less than $100 in my checking account and no car anymore which took 3 months of saving while I was homeless. I make $2000 a month, buy my own food, pay my aunt 400 in rent, have 80 phone bill, and a 7,000 debt to wells for the financed car and credit card debt.

    Saving money with a lawyer

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 07:41 PM PDT

I recently paid way too much for a short consultation with a lawyer. I'm embarrassed, but I want to share my "hindsight" tips. If you have any tips based on experience please share as well. (This was my first experience with a lawyer).

    1. Be clear about the price before hand. (I thought he said a certain amount every six minutes, but the actual charge was MUCH higher than expected - I don't know if I misheard due to a bad connection on the phone, but after sharing all of my personal information I didn't want to argue, so I just paid, although the price was unbelievable). If I could do it again, I would request that I could prepay for the time so that it's clear. At the very least, have it somewhere in writing (at least an email) what the hourly rate will be. (Obvious in hindsight). (Also related to number 1, shop around, although make sure that you're still talking to an expert if you need an expert).

    2. If you need to talk to a lawyer, send them all relevant information and documents ahead of time. (Again obvious in hindsight). He spent way too much time asking me nuanced questions about my specific situation. Try to think of any relevant questions the lawyer will ask, and document the answers to him ahead of time. (For example, if it's a tax situation, list all financial assets, but also make it clear which financial assets you don't have, so he doesn't spend time "just checking" to see if you missed something).

    3. Don't let politeness prevent you from interrupting if he goes on for too long about something that isn't relevant.

    4. I'll just re-emphasize point number 1 - be clear about the price. Clearly ask how much the price will be at the and of a consultation which lasts ___ minutes. If possible get it in writing.

If you all have better advice than this, please share. This is only hindsight advice based on my first experience.

    Thanks

    Credit Cards for Beginners?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 06:42 PM PDT

Little backstory, I'm a 21 year old college student who has been thinking about getting a credit card to start building credit. I have a stable job and still live at home with my parents so my expenses aren't as high as some. Is there any particular card or company that would be a good start?

I need to file taxes for 2018-2019 Financial Aid, but I can't get one of my W2s. Can I get away with filing with just one?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 01:44 PM PDT

So I didn't file taxes in 2016 (Yes, I know, I'm stupid but they never taught you that you needed to in school), but my new university is requiring me to file to confirm income so I can file independent and everything.

I worked two jobs in 2016. One of the W2s I got, one I cannot get (employer is long gone and cannot be reached). I have attempted to get a hold of wage income transcripts from the IRS, but every method has failed. They are supposedly too big to send through the mail (probably because I messed around with robinhood in 2016) and every attempt to have them faxed to me has failed. I've attempted to speak to a supervisor at the IRS, but they never call me back. I've exhausted every resource to obtain those documents through that method.

My question is, would I get away with filing taxes in 2016 with just my 1 W2? Look, I know, I get it, I'm not supposed to, but that isn't my question. I only made like 16k so they wouldn't bother auditing me right? I don't care about a return or anything, I just need the paperwork filed so I can proceed with getting financial aid. At the same time, I can't just "attempt and see what happens" because you can only paper file 2016 taxes, and it takes 4 weeks, which is basically my time limit right now.

    Any advice here?

I'm 19 and I have 6 credit cards. Is this a good or bad thing?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 03:23 AM PDT

I pay them off in full every month. They're treated like cash and have no annual fees. I only actively use 3, the others I signed up for either because of a signing deal or because they allowed me to build credit in order to get cards with better cash-back/ rewards deals. Will having this many credit cards negatively impact me in the long run? Would I be better off cancelling the ones I don't use? I use Credit Karma and they seem to have positively effected me thusfar, but Credit Karma seems to be solely focused on me signing up for more which seems unnecessary. Thank you very much for any insight.

Long post- Job with benefits vs without

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 05:44 PM PDT

I'm 23, married with two kids and one on the way. Im currently an OTR truck driver (out 7-14 days) home 3ish. I'll gross around 65k this year and have decent benefits. I currently pay $485 a month for a low deductible, 80/20 co insurance health insurance plan, 3% to 401k (company matches .5% up to 3%), and $7 for life insurance (300k for me, 100k for my wife). Two days PTO and two weeks vaca.

I live in a very rural area with not much going on for local trucking jobs that pay comparable money. I recently was offered a job with a small local outfit. Pays $22/hr days and $24/hr nights, time and a half after 40 (OT pay is not required in trucking). Avg 50-60hrs a week 5 days a week with a 6th day optional. This is very good pay for my area, as in $4-6/hr more than other similar jobs. The catch is there's no benefits offered.

I found a health insurance plan for $425/month with a $5000 deductible and $4000 out of pocket max. Figuring on maxing out an IRA at $5500, setting $2500 aside for vaca and pto, and 20/mo for life insurance.

I know this post is probably pretty clumsy to read, I apologize for that. But from what I'm figuring, I can maintain the same income and pay benefits at 52hrs avg/week on day shift. This seems extremely doable considering the work load. Of course, I could make a considerable amount more depending on the hours/shift I work. For now I'm planning on the low end, to be cautious.

As for debt, I owe my father just under 10k which I'm paying $1,100/mo towards. $100,000 on a house paying $580/mo. $3500 or so on a student loan paying $70/mo. We will attack the student loan after I pay my father off, I know this is backward but I hate owing him money lol.

Can you guys see anything I'm missing? Any advice? It sure would be nice to be home everyday....

Also- we would stay on current health plan through COBRA until October when my wife is due.

    Missed payments on Credit Card

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 09:35 AM PDT

I am an 18 year old college student who recently got a credit card to build my credit score. I went in twice and called my bank once to get them to setup automatic payments every cycle, but somehow they never did set it up. I make enough money to not have a problem paying the amount every cycle, but I was irresponsible in not checking that the payments were actually being made and it resulted in me going $15 over my secured limit after about 5 months.

Once I realized it I payed it off, but according to CreditKarma my credit score dropped into the low 500's :/ I won't ever miss another payment but I have a few questions on the future.

How long will it take to get my credit score back to a reasonable range? And is it possible for my bank to remove the the report, as it was "their fault" (I realize I'm really the only to blame here but it could be used for benefit to say otherwise)?

At 22 years old, am I heading the right direction financially?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 07:19 AM PDT

Recently I've taken a step back from all the problems in my life and started thinking about how I can change a few things. My biggest stress is my debt and making sure I can pay it off. At 22, I have a software engineering (mobile to be specific) job with a sallary of 70k. I'm one year out of college and my finiancial status is just alright. I spend ~500 in total on four student loans with a variable rate. Total student loan debt clocking in at ~75k. My rent is extremely cheap due to living with 5 other people, about 450 a month. The worst financial mistake I made was buying a nice car right out of college with my first job which has a 6 year loan of 398 a month at a 6.9% interest rate . . . -_- my last manditory bill is my car insurance at roughly 110 a month. All in all I spend $1,500 a month in a good month. I almost have 10k saved up.

I see a lot of suggestions that I should store that 10k away as an emergency fund and never touch it and I think that is a good idea as well. What should I do once I do that though? Should I save a certain amount every month and use the rest of the money to attack the principle on my car loan and get that burdon off my shoulders as quick as possible? Am I doing alright for my age? My biggest concern is what happens when I leave my current living situation and my rent isn't laughably cheap anymore.

Getting an auto loan after refinancing student loans?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 10:17 AM PDT

I assume the general consensus will be to not get a loan for a car, but I've only driven clunker hand-me-downs and I finally have a good paying career and would like to buy something relatively new.

I have 72k in private student loans, with a weighted average rate of 7.8% (high, I know). I've been quoted on a refi for 6.2%. If I refinance my student loans, will this help or hurt my chances of obtaining a car loan at all?

I am looking in the 15-20k range for a car. Pre-owned, reliable. I have 4.5k plus my current car trade in (est. $1k) for downpayment, but would need to finance the rest. Would I be able to get a loan with my student debt? Do they take into consideration the normality of student loans? Thanks

Should I start investing 10% of my salary in the S&P500 this month when I get my first paycheck.

So I'm 22 and getting my first paycheck from a professional job. The money isn't great but my only expenses is travel as I live with my folks and they refuse to take money off me.

Is it a good idea to invest 10% of my salary into the S&P500 every month. I'm going to "forget" about this money and let it grow (I know it can fall also). This is for the long term.

    I'm in Ireland btw

How much disposable income is enough when moving out/Am I budgeting right?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 09:40 AM PDT

So I'm currently in the process of moving out of my parents house, and it happens to be incredibly expensive with just me. After taxes I take home 2k a month. (This is what I'm budgeting for) Rent is 650/month( that's pretty much my ceiling for rent, and is the average around here for a 1 bd) Gas and Electric I have budgeted at 200/month 200 for car payment 200 for food(I'm not sure what to budget for this tbh, and doesn't include household supplies) 250 for car insurance 100 for student loan payments 60 for internet 50 for gas 50 for my phone bill+gym membership

This only leaves me $240 in discretionary funds a month, and might be a little tight. Now I have a fairly large nest egg(15 to 17k) and could pay either my car loan(11k) or my student loans (8k) completely off, but not both, eliminating the 200 or 100 payment. Is this a good strategy or is it better to keep it as an emergency fund, and is 240 too tight of a budget.

Any advice is appreciated thank you!
