Video of incident and damage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZoDs5yTMi8&feature=youtu.be

I have a brand-new one month old car worth around 60k (a Tesla) that got rear-ended by a semi-trick in slow traffic yesterday 7/6. Luckily everyone was OK, but my rear bumper and trunk sustained damage.

I caught the entire incident on a rear dash cam, and also his to me apology on video. We traded license, insurance & contact info. He immediately starts begging that I let him pay cash and not go through insurance because if I do he will lose his license and his entire job.

Anyway, is there any downside to at least giving him a shot at paying cash first, and if he can't or is too slow in doing so, I can go to his insurance?

    Thank you!

    (huge) oil leak after towing

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 06:33 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I drive a 2000 VW Beetle. Last night I was towed for an expired parking pass, which I can admit is my fault.

Today I went to pick up my car, but they would not let me. Why? They had it marked as unsafe to drive because of an oil leak. When they mentioned this, I initially thought something small. They showed me a photo of my car sitting in a POOL of oil. My car had no problems before this, we just purchased it a month ago, had it checked out, the works....

In fact, I had driven it home from work merely a couple of hours before it was towed. I have photos of it in a parking spot from days before, as well as photos from the car lot before we purchased it. I am only 21, female and not too knowledgeable about cars so I don't want them to take advantage of me and my ignorance, as they have horrible reviews on the internet.

The mechanic won't be in until Monday to inspect it and see if it was an existing problem or not, but what can I do to prepare for any claims that I would be at fault? This company has an F rating on BBB and a million negative reviews. Should I contact the insurance company prior to retrieving my car? Any and all advice would be appreciated.

    Regional auto insurance?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 12:37 AM PDT

For as long as I could drive I have had insurance through one of those big national insurance firms like GEICO, AllState, Liberty Mutual, etc. Rates were terrible and then last year I switched to an insurance with offices in a few states and found my rates to be reduced by more than 75%.

Fast forward a year and I moved out of the states that my insurance covers. So I don't know if they will continue to cover me, although I filed a claim in the new state for hail damage and they didn't say anything. I have to register my car in the new state and I don't know if they will continue to cover me.

I really don't want to go back to those big national companies again with their crazy rates and poor service.

    So questions are:

    • Every web search comparing auto rates gives me hits to one of those national brands. There doesn't seem to be a directory of regional or smaller insurance companies in my area. Is there a directory of all auto insurance providers in my state?

    • Any disadvantages to regional/local insurance? As far as I know, all insurance coverage is good nationwide. I have not had any problems reaching the claims department in the middle of the night with the regional insurance company.

tl;dr don't want to pay for premium auto insurance, looking for cheaper local or regional auto insurance providers.

    Car Insurance Incredibly Expensive?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 07:47 PM PDT

Hello all! I have a company vehicle, and have had it for the last 2 years. I drive it so often that I dropped the insurance on my truck, and parked it in the backyard, and used my fiances car when we want to go out and do something. Now I am switching companies, and selling my truck and getting a newer 2011 Honda Accord sedan. I started shopping around for insurance. I am 25 years old, male, have been in ONE accident since I started driving/owning my own vehicle at 16, and it was ruled the other persons fault. One speeding ticket in another state. I got a quote from a couple of different name brand websites, and was stunned. The cheapest I saw was $500/month, for a 6 month plan. I live in Miami, known for its horrible drivers, but I wasn't expecting this much. My last insurance was from another state, and it was about $80/month. I honestly can't afford rent in Miami AND a $500 car insurance payment, and that is for the minimum. I really don't want to get the minimum insurance.

Do I really have to move somewhere more north in order to afford car insurance payments?

Insurance only paying for 3/4 of roof

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 09:55 AM PDT

We had a tornado in NYS a few months ago and long story short, after getting a roofer to meet with the adjuster, the insurance agreed to pay for 3/4 of the roof, because "the 4th upper rear slope is not damaged, nor is it visible from the ground", it won't be covered. Not sure why they said it's not "visible from the ground", because it is, but only from the back of the house. Do I have any argument to get the 1/4 that isn't cover? This is Amica and it's Replacement cost.

[CA] Got rear ended over 3.5 weeks ago and other person isn't answering their insurance company.

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 08:29 PM PDT

I got rear ended over 3.5 weeks ago and the other person isn't responding to their insurance calls. I have collision with my insurance but I have a high deductible (brand new, less than a year old, didn't think it would be this cheap to fix) and the repair is bit under that I can't go through them. The other guy's insurance says they keep calling them but they won't answer, and I just have to wait.

Other issue, my phone didn't save pic of his driver's license and plates but I do have a partial of his plate.

Is there anything else I can do at this point? What options do I have? I understand their insurance is protecting their insurree but they can't dodge their calls forever right?

Got hit by a car when on a run

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 03:16 PM PDT

A month ago I was running with a friend and got hit by a car. We both had a couple of bruises but nothing was broken. A police report was filed. The person who ran us over has Statefarm and we got a letter in the mail about managing our claim. Are we entitled to a settlement? Or what exactly goes on when we "manage" a claim?

Edit- the lady who hit us said she didn't see us. From our perspective she didn't make a full stop at a stop sign and we learned after the fact that she was trying to turn right but did not have her turn signal on. She was 72. Police said to cut her some slack and wear reflective colors next time.

[NC, USA] notification of termination of liability insurance coverage. How to proceed?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 02:42 PM PDT

I moved from NC to TN at the end of May. The day I moved, I made sure to update my car insurance address to my new TN address. No changes in coverage — literally just changed my address. However, I still had my NC plates until this past week. Registered my car in TN and plan to mail back the NC plates on Monday.

I received this form today (FS-5) about termination of liability insurance coverage, asking whether or not I had a lapse in coverage. It says to check one of the following boxes:

    1) I had a lapse in liability insurance coverage OR 2) I terminated insurance on the above vehicle for one of the following reasons (plate was lost/stolen, vehicle has been sold, I am no longer a NC resident)

I'm still unclear. Did changing my car insurance address when I moved cause me to have a lapse in coverage?

[HOA] is asking for us to vote on new flood insurance for our condo complex. We would owe $930 by mid-October. Anny advice is appreciated.

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 01:59 PM PDT

    Greetings.

Our condo HOA says Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae lending requirements have changed and now require flood insurance in our area, FEMA flood zone AH. They are asking for a) a vote on whether to obtain flood insurance a levy a special assessment and b) if said ballot passes, $930 would be due in a lump payment by August, or three monthly payments by October.

Does this seem like the best option or would it be better to provide our own insurance and vote "no" on this ballot? I'm waiting for an insurance company to provide me with an independent quote. Thank you in advance for any advice.

Car insurance + registration question. Moving to California to live with grandmother but permanent residency is in North Carolina.

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 02:28 PM PDT

I have a question about auto insurance + registering my vehicle. I will be purchasing a car in California this week.

I am moving to California temporarily (2-3 years) to live with my grandmother & to attain clinical hours for my future job. I am still currently in my masters program online which is in another state.

I will be purchasing a car in California. I will be registering my car in California. But my father wants me to keep my residency in North Carolina since I am not going to stay in California permanently. Therefore, when I buy my auto insurance I will have to put my address of residency which is in North Carolina.

I know this isn't the best thing to do. But what should I do? Basically I will just be living at my grandmother's in California for the time being but my residence will be in North Carolina.

    I can't stop stressing.

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 02:14 PM PDT

Throwaway account. I'm a 17 year old white male living near Houston, TX. I just got in my first accident earlier today, more of a fender bender. The car I was driving was my grandfather's and I am not covered on the insurance.

So this is what happened. I am completely at fault. I was driving down a highway and stopped behind a truck just sitting in the road going maybe 10mph in a 55 zone. No blinker on. I wait maybe 20 secs before deciding to just pass him (it was in a passing zone). As soon as I try to pass him, he turns to the left(like turning into a driveway) and hits me above my back right tire. Barely any damage was caused. You can barely see it actually, but it's still there. I didn't look at the damage on his truck, but I really don't think it would be noticable.

I REALLY messed up because I was so fucking nervous when I got out of the car. The guy was yelling insults really loud, cussing at me, calling me names, the whole 9 yards. His wife I'm assuming comes out of the house and calms him down, and she gets a picture of my license and my grandpa's insurance, and writes down my name and phone number. IDK WHAT I WAS THINKING, but all she gave me was his name and phone number and that's all I got. No insurance stuff or anything. So I'm pretty sure I really fucked up. Like I was so nervous my whole body was shaking. After the guy calmed down I shook his hand and apologized, he seemed alright and said it was okay.

Anyways, none of my family knows about it. I don't know how ANY of this stuff works, if my grandpa's insurance will go up or anything. I'm getting a truck from my dad in a few days, and I don't know if it will affect my insurance rates or anything, since he is actually getting me on the insurance. I don't believe he uses the same insurance as my grandfather but idk. I know this post seems dumb but I would appreciate any help at all, because it's been a few hours and I am so stressed I can't even eat and my whole body hurts. I feel sick. If you need more details, a photo, or anything else, please let me know. Thanks in advance!

Do I need an umbrella policy? Or any other insurance?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 12:11 PM PDT

I have an older 90s model, reliable vehicle. So liability only with 100/300 bi limits, 100 pd. The same limits for ubi and upd.

No first party at all, I'm able to buy a new car myself if it's totaled. The premium for collision or comp just doesn't seem worth it when I consider what the total loss payout on the car would be, less than $2,000.

    I have some assets.

Renters policy, for a home, 100k liability. I think like 1k med pay, 5k personal effects, which I don't have much in the way of personal effects. I think I have 1k loss of use also, which seems low but I could stay with parents if needed.

I'm not as understanding as to why liability is as important in a renters scenario as it would be in an auto claims scenario, just seems the likelihood of a loss is far less. I'm not hosting parties and inviting people onto my roof or anything, no jumping off my roof into a pool, nothing like that. I did have some random holes in my yard an animal dug and I nearly tripped and sprained an ankle but I filled those with dirt recently. There are kids in the neighborhood who sometimes play on my lawn.

Anyway, I do have some assets. Nothing substantial or enough to consider me wealthy, but enough to where it would devastate me to see them ever become personally exposed, because I worked my entire life for them. And I have no debt.

Is there added value to raising my limits and looking into an umbrella policy, if so, how so? Can someone explain the value to me and when it is necessary, and when it is not? Is there a threshold of amount of assets needed to where someone would be recommended to have an umbrella policy?

Other than renters and auto, is there any other policy I may be over-looking? Is there any other coverage above and beyond a renters policy for say, a landlord bringing litigation against me for not maintaining the property? Any additional insurance I could or should be buying?

Question for fellow adjusters - designations

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 08:23 AM PDT

My company has a program where basically you have a scorecard and when a promotion comes up you apply and if your score is high enough you're granted the job. No interviews which is pretty sweet.

One of the items is asking if you have your masters or a designation. I am working on my masters but I have a couple of years left. Are there any designations that would be easy enough to get while I'm pursuing my masters degree? It's a significant amount of points and could be enough to guarantee a quick advance.

    Primerica...is it a pyramid scheme?!

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 11:59 AM PDT

I have a friend that recently tried to recruit me and I know its a pyramid scheme. However, this wasnt the first friend that has come to me about this. Both of them also got recruited via random phone call so i knew it was sketchy. I wanna make a video basically exposing them even in 2018. Can someone provide me with some more evidence and proof that that are a pyramid scheme. I have been doing some digging and I want to make sure I didnt leave anything out. Thank you!

How do I invoice Bank of America?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 06:27 AM PDT

I sent a co signed check from State farm for hail damage to my home and property. Unfortunately the check exceeded 20k and Bank of America wants to monitor the rest? What does that even mean? I have yet to understand this as they said I need to invoice for the amount above and beyond the roof repairs. It seems like they will be able to keep most of it as I am saving on labor costs to do it myself and I have no overhead. I am so confused on what should be a simple process. Can I just invoice the remaining balance as one charge? Or do I have to itemize? I have searched online for days and called 5 times... and as a retired engineer...I still am confused. Please ELI5 as I am obviously not smart in this area.
