Anyone automate a large portion of their job? Posted: 08 May 2018 08:03 PM PDT I just started a new job and I am seeing all these possibilities of atomating the tasks they are giving me. Has anyone ever automated a large portion of their job, and if so, what happened when your manager found out? [link] [comments]
Posted: 08 May 2018 03:53 PM PDT Wish me luck! Industry-Tax-Exempt orgs here. I've waited years for this promotion opportunity. I better ducking nail it. :) [link] [comments]
Posted: 08 May 2018 09:42 AM PDT I'll keep it short. I've been here for a year and was just told by boss to go for a walk with him to HR. I was fired effective immediately for poor performance. No PIP , only ever informal "hmm why did x take you so long". This is private not public accounting. I have a masters, been studying for reg but no parts passed. What do i say when job searching when asked why i left? They would only confirm dates of employment and title. End date is however today. I'm thinking i can send out resumes today saying employed may 2017 - present. Is that a good idea or not? I understand i have to think long and hard about my problems. Also i have been working with a third party recruiter- do i tell him everything honestly as he is sort of " working for me"? Thanks [link] [comments]
Public Accounting and Employment Benefits Posted: 08 May 2018 09:17 PM PDT I'm curious as to the type of benefits other firms are offering. I'm worried my firm is falling behind the times. Do any of you in public accounting receive benefits like paid parental leave, reduced work hours for parental leave? What about other benefits, like exam reimbursement? [link] [comments]
Posted: 08 May 2018 12:40 PM PDT After struggling in college with a low GPA, I was able bring up a 2.7 Accounting GPA to a 3.4 and got an offer from Deloitte in audit! Any tips on how to survive the first few years? -Thank you. [link] [comments]
Should I include my CPA exam score in my cover letter? Posted: 08 May 2018 03:49 PM PDT I've been in tax for 4 years and I'm looking to transition out of public accounting. I found a government job that looks really appealing, but the job description says that they require 3 years of governmental accounting and part of the job is working with the auditors. My firm is purely tax so I don't have any exposure to audit. I'm applying anyway because it can't hurt. I was thinking of including in my cover letter something along the lines of "While I do not currently have experience with governmental accounting, I am eager to learn and my FAR exam score of 92 shows that I have a strong grasp of GASB standards. My AUD exam score of 98 demonstrates that I will be adept at working with the auditors to supply them with the necessary information." What do you guys think? I want to acknowledge the fact that i don't have the experience that they're asking for but that I'll still be able to do the job. I'm not sure if this is the best way to go about it. Posted: 08 May 2018 04:46 PM PDT I just received my NTS for FAR and am looking at my options for making a plan to complete all four parts. I am currently working in a small accounting firm (7 other associates) and hours are reduced now which will be great for studying. I may even be able to study some during work hours. I plan on purchasing Wiley and I know you can make a plan on there based on amount of hours you plan to study. Is it realistic to complete three parts before tax season, or would this be a force? I was thinking of doing FAR, BEC ---Tax Season---- then AUD, REG after. I want to be able to still have (somewhat) of a social life while studying. Looking for insight or advice for those who have had similar situations, thanks. [link] [comments]
Job burnout affecting attention to detail? Posted: 08 May 2018 03:15 PM PDT I am experiencing just slight/minor burnout and wanted to know if any other accountant's attention to detail suffered as a result of fatigue? How did you combat it and recover? Generally a high performer but have been making mistakes that I usually don't make. Industry professional, not in public. [link] [comments]
Feeling incompetent as a senior accountant Posted: 08 May 2018 07:03 AM PDT Throw away account. Just started a senior accountant role at a real estate management company after 3 years of being staff in another industry role. My first day wasn't great. No training aside from a 5 min walk through in circles on some files I need to approve. Had no idea what to do. Yes, I understand the debits and credits but I didn't know what I was looking at. Random account numbers and sets of bank codes that stand for different projects with no idea how to find them. Most people at this company in accounting have been there less than 6 months. My boss has been in her role 2 months. Any tips for how to overcome new job hurdles like being a small fish in a big pond? [link] [comments]
Self review -- how to get better? Posted: 08 May 2018 01:48 PM PDT I cringe when I give something to my senior and there is an error I should have known about. Has anyone found a process to lower your error rate? I started making small checklists to go through before sending documentation for review. Anyone else have a process that has helped them? Will I be stuck in tax forever? I’m ready to leave public. Posted: 08 May 2018 04:35 AM PDT After just over 3 years, I think I'm ready to leave public. Being a manager in public doesn't look like something I want to do. I am getting bored of doing taxes, and am wondering what the chances are of exiting to a non-tax role would be? I feel like I'd rather exit to the accounting side of industry due to their being a much greater number of jobs than the tax side. I'm worried if I exited to a industry tax role, and the role didn't work out, it would take me months to find my next job, due to how specialized tax. Anyone have experience with leaving tax for a non tax role? [link] [comments]
Will taking a mental health break impact performance review? Posted: 08 May 2018 09:42 PM PDT I'm a first year staff at a top 15 nation firm. I survived my first busy season but am feeling pretty burnt out despite the fact that the past 2 weeks have been fairly light and I've gone back to working 8-9 he days. This week the job I was scheduled for was moved to a later date so I needed to reach out for additional work to keep busy. Needless to say I got dropped into a very messy job that was having trouble wrapping up and I have virtually no support and am expected to turn this job around. This has made me feel overwhelmingly stressed and I just kind of snapped when the partner emailed me at 9:00pm adding on yet another task for my to complete tomorrow. I've been crying uncontrollably for the past 40 minutes and am in need of a break. This busy season has consumed my entire life. I don't hang out with friends don't have time to work out I've gained 20lbs in busy season and I just can't take it. Just as I started to have some semblance of a normal life the tasks just start pileing up again. I don't want to leave my firm, despite all this I really do like the clients I've worked on and the teams I've worked with I just need a break to manage the stress but I'm worried it will reflect poorly on me since the other staff at my office appear to be managing just fine and our first performance review is happening next month. I apologise in advance for typos as I've typed this from my phone while sobbing. [link] [comments]
Posted: 08 May 2018 09:39 PM PDT I'm currently a construction worker and 28 years old. I have a family and I know I can not physically be doing what I'm doing in 30 years nor do I want to be. I also would like to work in the ac, dress nicer and have a 40 week mean a 40 hour week. I see so many people talk about how they are "to old" to be in the position they are in regarding these types of jobs. I look towards accounting because to me the job seems easy compared to what I do. School is not a problem for me to complete, I'm currently in an apprenticeship program for the trades which requires class work and is heavy in math. My question is why would age be a factor if it is, and what advice can you offer if one were to pursue this path. [link] [comments]
How imperative was taking a logic course for you as an accountant? Posted: 08 May 2018 05:51 PM PDT Recently just finished logic and I feel so much smarter for it. I wonder if you all who are already accountants feel that taking a logic course helped you as an accountant (and as a person)? [link] [comments]
Asking for time off at summer internship Posted: 08 May 2018 09:32 PM PDT I got accepted for a full time summer internship as a junior at a construction and asphalt company with a finance department of 15 people. I start may 29 and it ends near the end of August. Every summer my family takes two separate one week vacations that usually are within a week apart. To me two weeks of vacation in a single summer seems excessive to ask for at an internship. Not sure whether or not I should just ask for one of the weeks off, neither, or just ask for both. The reason I really haven't mentioned it before hand is due to a strange hiring situation. I was offered the position after only a single short 30 minute phone interview with the CFO, CEO, and recruiter. Since I do not have any idea what these people are like I did not want to just send an email asking about time off before I met them and got settled in a little bit. Any advice on how I should handle this situation? Obviously family is important, but my future career is really important to me as well. [link] [comments]
Am I going crazy about this Amazon Income tax thing? The cash flow statement said they paid $957M... Posted: 08 May 2018 05:59 AM PDT A quick look at their Cash Flow statement says they paid $957,000,000 in Income taxes. The line item literally says, "Cash paid for income taxes, net of refunds". You can go round and round about what is fair, but the claim they paid no income taxes seems absurd when it says that right in their cash flows. Can someone tell me if I'm missing something big here? Is there a such thing as having too many extracurriculars? Posted: 08 May 2018 08:58 PM PDT So I am super excited to finally be starting my junior year at a university this fall. I have already got in touch with the career adviser for the accounting department and he has been super helpful with any questions that I have had. The biggest thing that he told me was that firms want you to have a good gpa (4.0 at a community college for 4 semester, aim to keep it around a 3.7 - 3.8 at the uni) but they also want to you to be well rounded. Now ill be working part time around 30 hours per week and the only days ill get off are the days I have classes which are two days since i bulked all my classes together like that. One of those days does include an accounting club meeting. Now I dont really want to run for an officer position as I will be commuting and I dont think I could handle all that responsibility but I do plan on going to all of their recruiting events and just applying for every internship i see, even thought he adviser said that I probably wont be doing one until graduate year since the firms want their interns to either have 150 credit hours or be on the track to get them. Other than that Ill really be spending my free time either studying, going to school, or working. My ultimate question is this: will working part time, attending networking events and being semi active in the accounting club, have a good gpa, and just being diligent in applying do i stand a good chance of being a good candidate for internships? Or should i pick up more extra outside activities. [link] [comments]

What is something your firm did that made you gain respect for it and its management? Posted: 08 May 2018 02:55 PM PDT
Posted: 08 May 2018 08:43 PM PDT These were released last night. Has anyone else taken one of them yet? I am studying for REG and taking it this Friday. I took Mock 1 last Tuesday and got a 60, Mock 2 this Sunday and got a 66, and I just took Mock 3 and got an 80. The thing that concerns me is that Mock 3 has a ton of MCQs that were repeats from other parts of the course, so I recognized them. I knew why the answers were what they were, but still. I got a 90% on that portion, but only a 67% on the sims. My issues on the first two were also mainly on the sims. Anyone have any idea where these kinds of scores would put me in terms of being prepared for this? I did a lot better on my mock exams before taking FAR (passed, 85) and AUD (waiting for score), so this worries me a bit. Though I know that most people say your real score is an increase of 10-15 from your practice average. [link] [comments] |
