It finally happened to me. Somebody drained my debit card and the banks will not give me credit for at least 2 weeks. I don't know what to do?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 05:02 AM PDT

So I never thought this would happen to me but somebody managed to withdraw $200 and 5 mins later another $200. Im guessing they probably tried again but at that point there was nothing except $32 dollars. I called Citibank and told them to cancel the cards and to file a claim. At the end of the phone call they told me it would take 10 business days for it to show up in my account even though I been a customer with them since 2010 I assumed I would be given a provisional credit since I was given that option when some shoes I bought weren't delivered. I have a phone bill, gas, and food to pay for until I get paid in two weeks. I literally don't know what to do. Whats the point of filing a dispute if you cant even get the money somebody stole back?! Should I call back Citibank and talk to them some more? At this point I don't even know what to do and any advice would be so helpful right now. Thank you guys

Edit: I might not be able to respond to everyone but thank you to every one who gave me their advice whether it was the tough love words or even the idea to get a credit card. At the top of morning I did not know what to do with myself and after reading your guys comments I have a better sense of personal finance. It really hard being as a college student to go through this but I hope this thread can be used a lesson for anyone else in the future who might go through this same situation. Thank you redditors I love you all!

Edit2: thanks for the advice once again guys. Tomorrow morning I'm going to apply for a credit card and will get an update on my situation from my branch manager. I keep getting a lot of questions on how my money was withdrawn without a pin and to be honest I have no idea how they did that. The transaction on my account did not mention the state or city which it was withdrawn in. Also another question i keep getting asked is how I only have $400 in my account and how I don't have an emergency savings account. Im a poor college student that has to pay for rent and bills. I only make $400 every 2 weeks and that requires me to live frugally. I would ask for more hours but its already hard to balance taking 18 units and working a lot of hours. That $400 would last me enough for these next 2 weeks until I get paid again. Hopefully that answers some questions you guys have.

Figured I share how I got my roommates to save a lot of money and myself even more on food/groceries.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 01:56 PM PDT

So my roommates eat out for pretty much every meal, I've been trying to convince them to start making their own food so they can save money and eat healthier but they always make excuses like they don't have the time or the skill. Well it finally hit me, when I am making myself food I could easily make theirs as well, I'd just need to make bigger portions. But this wouldn't be fair to me if I made their food for them with nothing beneficial in return. So I was able to get them to agree to pay for all the groceries and in return I'd make meals for all of us. We are 2 months into it and so far its working great. Less food is being wasted now and we can buy in bulk now. They get to eat healthier food for less money and I get all the food I would have had to pay and prepare for in the first place for free now. Win Win!

This likely won't work for most of you but figured I share for those who may be in a similar situation where something like this might work.

Just turned 18 and am being kicked out

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 05:08 PM PDT

My mom kicked me out today two weeks after my 18th birthday. I had expected this because she threatened my brother with it but his situation was different. He had graduated high school his junior year and then went into the army once he turned 18. He never wanted to go off to college. I'm still in high school and will graduate next month. I live in a small rural town in Texas and I know some places you can't kick your kid out until they graduate high school but going back to live with my mom is unappealing to me so I'd rather just rough it out for now. My high school has a program where you take classes at the community college in town and those classes count for college and high school credit and I have taken enough hours at the college to graduate with my associates next month as well as long as I pass all my finals. I have a car but the title is in my moms name. She says she will switch the title to my name this week but I know that I will need car insurance before that can happen. Also my drivers license is from a different state so I think I need to get it renewed before then also. I have 1500 cash but no real job as of right now. I can start applying once I find a place to shower and have time to go get clothes from my moms house. I have a phone that I've paid off but my mom says she is going to take me off of her plan next billing cycle which ends on the 18th of May. I'm paying for unlimited data right now and am using my phones hotspot to connect to my laptop so that I can do my homework. I have one friend that I can ask to stay at his place but I'm not sure if his parents would be okay with that. I don't have any relatives that live anywhere nearby. I've already been accepted into college and have scholarships and that has always been the route I planned to take. I could always go into the military though like my brother. You get food and shelter and a paycheck. I'm an Eagle Scout so I would get an instant pay grade increase. I have no clue what to start doing and no idea how to get my car sorted out. I'll ask my friend tomorrow at school if his parents would be okay with me staying at his house for awhile. Also I've kinda just been chilling in a McDonalds parking lot for a couple hours and have no clue where someone living out of their car is allowed to park so that I can sleep. Any help would be appreciated.

Single SAHM preparing for the end of my relationship.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 05:47 AM PDT

I will try and keep this as short as possible.

I am 28 years old and living in Ontario. I am basically preparing for my boyfriend to dump me and I am panicking. I am a SAHM with no income, my child is 4 and will begin attending school in the fall. I have no idea what resources or course of action to take. I had intended on starting school myself come February at the local college but now I have to worry about putting a roof over our head and food on the table. I was heavily dependent on my boyfriend/her dad and I have recently discovered he basically has one foot out the door.

Barclay DREAM Account Owners: You should transfer your funds to a regular Barclay Savings account now. The interest rate is higher with no monthly limits. This change wasn't advertised that I saw.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 06:54 AM PDT

This may be obvious to many, however I paid no notice. I didn't even realize that DREAM accounts were no longer offered by Barclays. Existing accounts kept the same bonus, however the regular account now has an interest rate of 1.5% an no monthly limits. DREAM still has 1.2% and a 1000 dollar monthly limit. There is no reason to keep the DREAM account that I can see now.

Tutoring job: Am I being elaborately scammed?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 11:06 AM PDT

I work as a researcher at a major Canadian university. Here, I list my information on a departmental tutoring list for occasional tutoring work on the side. I frequently get texts from students inquiring about rates, and looking to set up sessions (single or recurring). I take payment by cash at the start of each session unless I know the student better.

Recently, I got a call from a strange phone number. Picked it up, but the signal was very poor (on their end), so I resorted to texting, asking how I could help/what was up.

A man introduced himself to me and said he was looking for a tutor for his 14 year old son, who was having issues in my subject area. No problem. I gave him my rate and payment policy. I asked about his phone number (Florida-based), and he said his son lives in my city with a caregiver. Strange, but sure.

The man offered to pay for 12 sessions up front. The payment is to be sent to me by his "attorney" via "US Certified Check", which will be delivered to me prior to the lesson dates we planned so it can clear in my bank account. I asked for an Interac e-transfer, but he said he prefers the above route. I gave him my name and address for receiving the check.

A day later I got this series of texts, which are red flags to me: "Good morning, It's my pleasure to have my son under your tutelage, i want you to know that i am doing all i could to make sure that my son see the best of you when he arrive for the lesson. I got a confirmation just now from my attorney that the check as been send to your given address which will be deliver to you any moment soon." "Although, he also told me that the check sent is more than your teaching cost, am so much sorry for that My attorney included my son and his caregiver traveling expenses to your state on the check to avoid delay in preparation for the lesson. though, have make arrangement concerning this once you get the check make the deposit to your bank and once its cleared to your account which is not going to take more than 24 hours, You will deduct the lesson fee and help me to send the remaining balance to the caregiver." "I wait to hear from you once you read this text to be sure you are going to follow my instructions and take good care of my son when he arrive for the lesson and you are to deduct all your transport fees and bank charges from the balance of the money you are to send and deduct extra $50 from the money for all your effort by doing this for me. Thank you and have a lovely day."

So either this is a very wealthy man with a not so good attorney, or some sort of elaborate scam involving depositing the money, paying part of it out, and then having the original amount disappear from my account. How can I protect myself from the latter? Is this common? I'm choosing to post here instead of the Canadian sub first, as this is originating from the US.

Just because I'm paranoid, I'll also add that my cell plan covers North America-wide texting and calling. Is there any way this is some form of a high-rate number that will charge me through the teeth for communicating with it?

    Cheers guys.

Edit: Thanks for the unanimous consensus everyone! Turns out this is quite a common scam, just tailored to my situation. I will block the number and tear up any paper or otherwise I receive.

My bank keeps lowering the threshold of savings which mature interest. Why would they be doing this and should I be worried?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 04:33 AM PDT

I have a savings account with Santander, the "famous" 123 Savings account. This is in Europe btw.

Up until last year, the first €15000 in the account matured an interest of 3%/year.

Then they lowered it to €10000.

Now they've lowered again to €6000.

It seems to me this is a desperate move done because they can't afford to keep paying the interest.

It seems desperate because (to me) it encourages to move my other savings elsewhere, but should I be worried at all? It's still better than most savings accounts, but I can't tell if this is the writing on the wall for something bigger or not.

    Any advice appreciated, thanks!

Partially employed slacker looking to start “real” life

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 05:44 PM PDT

25, female. I make $100-200 a week under the table. Own my car outright. Live with my parents who pay for a phone family plan and my car insurance. My only expenses are food, gas, and clothing. I have my associates degree in social science. I have $15,000 in student debt. My credit score is good, almost great. I have two credit cards and have never paid any less than my statement balance.

I'm supremely lazy. I've barely done shit since high school. I have almost nothing to show for the last 7 years of my life. If I don't change now I think I'll be stagnant forever to be honest.

My plan is to go back to school for a one year health care trade position. It would add $9,000 to my student debt, bringing my total to around $24,000. I can make $50,000-60,000 starting out if I complete the program. When that time comes I want to move out and be completely self reliant.

I have a few questions. How can I start preparing for my move now? I want to live in a city, but how do I choose one that I can afford? Is living in a city doable at 50k? What are some costs associated with living on my own I may not know about? How much should I have saved before I move? What do you wish you knew before you had to start balancing a budget?

I work at a restaurant that keeps 2% of total tips?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 11:51 AM PDT

So I've recently started working at a restaurant as a server and I am required to give 2% of my total tips of the day to the owners. At first I didn't think much of it, but I've done some research and I now know that this practice is illegal per the DOL website. Who can I contact or what can I do about this?

Was stupid and maxed out my 3 credit cards (now totaling 15k) traveling, and now getting backhanded with interest. Best way to consolidate/pay off the cards?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 10:18 AM PDT

Went traveling throughout the last two years and now racked up 15k worth of debt . Getting smacked with interest up to around $300 a month through the 3 cards. I thought interest was an ANNUAL fee not a monthly one, so now I'm in panic mode. Got a chase sapphire preferred, Chase freedom, and Bank of America cash rewards all at around 20%APR. I was thinking of getting a personal loan and paying off one of them completely first. I to get a balance transfer card for 0%APR rate but was denied due to my outstanding balances I owe.

Currently making 15/hr part time (25hrs),part time in school, with rent about nice $600 a month hitting me hard, so trying to get some advice on friends of reddit! I was trying to pay off my biggest balance first (around 6k on chase sapphire) by pumping around $400 a month into instead of the minimum (around $200). Any resources you all would recommend? I thought a personal loan would be best but there's just so much info out there I thought I'd ask people who have been in a similar position perhaps!

Too poor to be an international student?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 04:35 PM PDT

So, I'm from the U.K. but recently have been looking into US universities because I've always wanted to go there, live there and work there. (I know about visas and not being able to work)

But while in the U.K. I can get a student loan to basically completely pay for my education at university, I'm looking at the numbers on these degrees and they're more than I think my family earns in 2/3 years.

I'm pretty good at maths and physics so I know I'd be able to complete the course and find a well paid job, but I'm not good enough to earn scholarship through academics and if I'd get one in anything it'd be rugby. In the US that's not going to be a large sum though.

Should I give up on my want to go and study in the US? I really want to be able to but my family just literally couldn't even afford to pay about 7,000 dollars a year let alone 30,000 like most unis...

    Thanks in advance!

Edit: getting downvotes because I'm annoyed at the fact that I can't study at much better universities just because my family aren't rich even though I have the same ability as those that do. I think that's understandable...

Im 17, my dad refuses to pay me back

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 06:49 PM PDT

So as it says im 17 and i lend my dad money. He guilts me into doing it and threatens to take my car away so i cant get to work. Recently i lent him 750 dollars with the promise of getting 1500 back. WITHOUT counting that extra 750 he now owes me over 3000 dollars. An extra detail is that last year he bought me a car for 500 and gave it to me, i sold it for 1000 dollars and he took the money from me. (Claiming its his money, im not sure about how all that works out but im counting 500 of that money as mine because i was gonna buy a new car). So here is my situation, my mom gave her car to me since she is on my side in all of this and she is driving her moms car. However as you can imagine my moms car is on a crazy high interest rate (we are talking about 428 dollars on an '08) and i dont have reliable transportation anymore since its getting shut off due to missed payment from my dad. Is it possible for me to get a car loan at 17? I just got promoted at work and i plan on working this job through community college but i need reliable transportation and my dad has all my money that i would buy a car with. How do i manage this situation and what do i do?

Is it okay to tell my Boss it’s none of their business why I’m leaving my position?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 06:46 PM PDT

*Sorry if this isn't the correct subreddit to post in; I've seen similar questions asked and answered here, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

I hate my current job. I'm looking to quit as soon as I get the go-ahead with another position.

There are several legitimate reasons why I no longer want to work for the current company, of which include terrible management, blatant favoritism, incredible disorganization, and scape-goating certain team members into being the black sheep of the department until they're either fired for no reason or quit after months of a verbal beat down from their superiors (this is the current position I'm in with my so-called "team").

Clearly, I cannot outright say these things to my Boss, one because I need a solid reference and this is the place to get it from, and two, I do not need to be causing unnecessary drama the last week or two I work there. It will only make things even more miserable for me.

So, is it in my best interests to simply say "it's not really of your concern", should my Boss ask why I've decided to leave the company, or should I have a reason on hand, no matter how much of a lie that reason might be?

Thoughts? Suggestions? Rage-filled anecdotes about people in similar situations? All would very much be welcomed, as I really don't know how to proceed with this and it's been keeping me up at night. Thanks!

Edit: I appreciate the fast responses a lot of you have given, they're very helpful. I think I may have come across too harsh in my post however, and I apologize for that. I'm certainly not looking to burn bridges or be confrontational in any way... I'm just looking for a positive way to end my career with my peers without having to go into explicit detail about why I've decided to leave the job... Again, I appreciate all the suggestion so far and look forward to reading more, and I'm sorry if there is any miscommunication in how I've conveyed whatI'm looking to say upon my exit

Tried to order Lenovo laptop online, ended up with a charge and no computer

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 05:47 PM PDT

I recently visited Canada and decided to order a Lenovo laptop there because I found a good on their (official) website. I gave them a call and the rep went through my order. After a long hold she told me it went through. I found it weird that I got no confirmation email so I decided to call again the next day. Another rep told me there was a problem with the card and there was no deal and no charge. Weird. But, okay, he said he would get the order done and I ended up giving him my order details and card again. I did get a confirmation this time. Being extra cautious as I am I went on to verify that the shipping time will okay, and I realized it won't and I must cancel. The same hour I canceled it through their online system and called to cancel. I was promised no charge was made to my charge. I emailed the rep and he confirmed in email that no charge was made and I am all good. I've been very skeptical of their poo issues by this point. So I checked my card a few days later and a charge of 185 CAD was made to my card! Which also makes no sense because that was not the cost of my order. Can't understand where that amount popped up from.

So I'm planning on disputing the charge, what else can I do? I didn't manage to get a hold of a manager or find a complaints department for Lenovo.

Tl;dr got a charge for no deal, potentially been messed with by Lenovo reps, what can I do?

    Last shot, really need help.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 02:37 PM PDT

First of all, I use a throwaway because people know my main account. English is not my main language but I'll do the best I can (I'm from the Netherlands).

Let's start at the beginning, my dad moved away when I was young, he has a parental relationship with my older brother and sister, but he never cared about me, no clue why, but this always hurts a lot when I think about it.

I had a troubling youth, was abused both mentally and phisicly by my stepdad and my mom never did anything, which also left a lot of mental scars.

I had to move out like a year ago, I slept a lot on the street because my stepdad locked the door before I got home from time to time (these locks that you can only open from the inside), thus locking my out. There was no way that I could live that life, I thinked about throwing myself in front of a train multiple times, and there was absolute no other option than moving out, even tho I couldn't really afford it.

I'm currently doing school (22, failed 2 schools due personal reasons and worked for 2 years, but it's going good now on school), but I can't pay it anymore. I got fired from my job (a callcentre) because they noticed the work was really making me depressed (selling shit to elderly people, I really felt like shit doing it, but I needed the money so hard) which it did, I felt like shit every time I left my work but like I said, I really needed the money. I'm currently looking for a new job but it's really hard to get one as a 22 year old student (I can only work after school and in the weekend, so they rather hire 16 and 18 year olds as they are way cheaper) + a accident last year fucked up my hearing and knees, so a lot of people won't hire me because of that. My money is running out. I already sold off my expensive phone (replaced it with a second hand phone) and sold my PC, I used to make some money by producing beats for people, but I needed the money for food so had to sell it off sadly. I'm really losing hope and it's making me so depressed, I've never had a good moment in my life and it just keeps going in a downwards spiral.

I already have a student lone but all that money goes to my school, house (student room, €300 a month all inclusive), health care and a monthly payoff from a couple of accidents I had last year.

What can i do to get myself up on my feet again? I'm really starting to lose hope, if this continues I won't be able to pay my next year of school (also my last year), what can I do to earn some money?

Thanks a lot for reading this, I really hope to get some good advice that will help my out of this.

How do I pay off my debt/build credit?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 04:46 PM PDT

First off my dad died when I was 18 and I was kinda spoiled so I didn't learn alot about how life works, I got a bunch of money from his death and spent it all, got in some trouble and lost my driver license and got in debt from two bills.

I had checked creditkarma once because I got denied something and I wanted to see why, then I figured out I had old debt from a hospital bill and a utility bill that I think got turned over to collections. The dates on the debt are from about 5 years ago and one is $900ish and the other $400ish. How do I even go about paying them off and do I have to have all the money right then and there or are there plans? If I just don't pay them will they go away eventually? Can I get arrested for not paying these collections? If I pay them off will it clear up my credit score right away or should I get a credit card and use that to build my credit now before I pay the bill?

I've looked up a few things on the internet but I've seen a few things that make me worried about getting screwed over so I figured I'd come to good ol' reddit.

24, just lost my job, no money, looming lease payment and bills, I don't know what my direction in life is

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 11:07 AM PDT

Just when things started to look up and I got a job at a local food joint with good pay, they let me go after the 1st week. They wanted someone with more experience and admittedly I'm lacking there. My work history is spotty, following years of homelessness and transience. Over the past 5 years, I've worked about an accumulative 25 months. I don't particularly excel at anything so far. I have food service experience but not enough to make me look like an attractive hire. I prefer working in kitchens but they always want someone with more experience than me. I have more experience working FOH which I get pushed into for looks, but I'm terrible at it because I'm so absent minded without aderall. In the past I mostly just did undocumented sex work to get by, but that's not something I really wish to do again.

I don't really know what I'm good at, or what skill I really have to offer. I'm muscular and workout, but a grown man will always be a more attractive hire for heavy labor. I'm a good writer, both in narrative fiction and essays, but I don't have experience or degrees to show for it. I speak spanish through family exposure but not at a professional fluency, and I live in a part of the country with very few spanish speakers. I have a passion for music, which doesn't really pay, and for linguistics, which I again don't have any degree or applicable use for. The only offers I really get approached for are things like stripping, which I just can't do.

I need income, but I also need direction in life. If I settle into working high turnover, low pay, high hours work like cashier at a Family Dollar then I'm afraid I'll loose all my time and will to live again. I just don't seem to be suited for anything, I haven't been able to find something that works.

I don't really know where to go from here. I have no money at all, no food, no medicine, and not much of a tangible vision for my near future

    Rent or Buy

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 07:56 PM PDT

The house I'm currently looking at is 169,000 but I'm scared to buy because I don't know if my work will want me to move anytime soon. Renting seems like I'm just throwing my money away. The cheapest places to rent around here are $900 month minimum. Please help this 22YO make decisions

My wife got a state tax refund mailed to my parents house for their state. It's not some crazy huge number, but I'm seriously confused about it.

Are fake refunds a thing? Any way to determine if it's legit or what happened?

Edit: turns out my dad thought he was texting my little brother who lives with them during the summer. Crisis averted!

Will renting 2 bedrooms in my 4 bedroom house cause me to lose my Principal Residence Exemption in Canada?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 03:56 PM PDT

In terms of claiming rent, I will be claiming rent income received from renting the two bedrooms out and I figured I could deduct the usual rental expenses (mortgage interest, insurance, property taxes, utilities) at 50%. The other 50% being my personal use. In the end I am only profiting a little over $3,000 so I am not too worried about the additional taxes.

My main concern is the possibility of the CRA considering this a change of use from a principal residence to a partial rental property and therefore affecting my excemption from paying capital gains if I decided to sell the house.

It is the only house I own and I live in it year round. Will not be claiming any CCA. Haven't made major structural alterations. I've read numerous statements and artictles relating to this but they don't specifically state what will be considered a change of use.

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated!

I have a credit card charge-off from over a year ago and the bank no longer calls me about it. What should I do?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 07:36 PM PDT

I had a credit card through KeyBank and racked up the balance to around $6,500. They would call me about it and I rarely would answer. When I did answer one time, they told me they would send a packet for me to fill out and send back so they can figure out a payment plan.

I received the packet but lazy me never filled it out. The calls continues occasionally but I didn't answer. Eventually it turned into a charge-off in April 2017. I haven't received any calls about it since December 2017. It hasn't been sent to collections as far as I know and shows up as closed/charge-off on my credit report.

Should I wait until I get another phone call, if they ever do call? Or should I call them? Should I just forget about it?

    Debt reduction calculator spreadsheet

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 10:41 AM PDT

I know this has been shared before, but it was hard for me to find in the search, so I figured I'd make a new post for it. It's easy enough to choose the avalanche or snowball method and get to work, but I like being able to see all the details. This tool allows you to choose your method or create a custom order for debt reduction and see the resulting time line and interest. It also allows you to add in "snowflake" one-time payments, such as tax refunds or bonuses, too, which I thought was very handy. I'm not affiliated with this website at all - I just found it very useful. https://www.vertex42.com/Calculators/debt-reduction-calculator.html
