Legal Advice My wife is being let go bc she is pregnant

My wife is being let go bc she is pregnant

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 03:50 AM PDT

My wife is a school teacher at a private church school in Texas.

She isn't a called worker but she has been there for 5 years.

Her grade level won't have enough students to fill all three classrooms next year, so a teacher will have to be let go.

We'll be having our second child the first week of school.

When she announced that she would be missing the first 6-8 weeks of school, her principal immediately called her into her office to let her know they have to cut a teacher and since she'll be gone the first few months, she would be the one. They're offering to let her keep insurance and disability so that we can cover the delivery costs. They also told her that if enough students enroll either before or after school starts, she would be a candidate to get the position.

They're painting this as a great opportunity to get to stay home and take care of the babies, but we've let them know that we can't afford to be on one income. We hate the idea of suing but we don't know how we're going to get by. Teaching positions don't open up very often during the school year so its not like she'll just be able to find another job when she returns from leave

What recourse do we have available?

EDIT: A "Called Worker" is someone who is ordained by the Lutheran church. Most teachers have this designation bc the Lutheran church likes to employ graduates of their Lutheran universities, but my wife was recruited from a public school 5 years ago and they said that not being "Called" wouldn't be be an issue. They really wanted her when she came on, but it appears that since we're not truly one of them, we're expendable

EDIT 2: Like most schools here, the teachers sign a yearly contract going from August through July. What, if any, effect would this have? They are calling it termination, but at the same time they aren't offering her a contract.

    Original

    Update 1

    Last update

So I had pretty much abandoned this alt after its primary use for the above drama, but while troubleshooting my primary alt I loaded this one again ... and saw a request for a followup a year later. Not sure if anyone else still cares, but just in case:

I did, in fact, end up hitchhiking to Seattle. In winter. Almost 2,000 miles, because I didn't dare brave the more straightforward but FAR colder routes through Oklahoma/Colorado/Wyoming/Montana or NM/Utah/Idaho, so I ended up following the lower southern/far western coastal route (pretty much I-10 to I-5).

It took about 3 1/2 weeks, and with the exceptions of nearing a crisis of hypothermia in the California mountains along I-5 and the final leg, where I was made the driver in a two-vehicle caravan where the owner was pretty much a semi-functioning schizophrenic (I'd use a more modern, less stigmatizing term, but there seems to be some division as to what that term will be in the West) was pretty uneventful.

Dropped off in downtown Seattle, registered at a mission, then found a organization where I could use their address to update my bank card info so I could have access to my final paycheck (the bank had frozen the account because it was being used across multiple states in rapid succession).

Next located a print shop that would make custom signs and had this sandwich board made: front, back

Bought a couple of removable business card holders to hold business cards (when I could afford them - the sign maker gave me a great deal, but my funds were pretty low by then) and donations and stuck them on the sign.

Got an account at the Seattle Main Library branch and started surfing for local jobs. Once I hit my daily 1.5 hour limit, I'd hit the streets with the sandwich board and wander to the various tech company buildings and try to catch someone's attention.

I did get some nibbles over a two-month period, both online and via the sign, but frustratingly there wasn't any followup, though there were a LOT of attaboys for taking the sandwich board route.

I'd been keeping my sister reassured/up-to-date, and I guess she'd been passing on my efforts at the cooking job and while I was in Seattle, because I got a call out of the blue from my estranged father. One of the biggest suspicions I'd had about the lack of followup wasn't because I was homeless per se, but because I'm completely self-taught, and had never really had the time/money to go to college or get certifications - a "country mechanic" PC technician, if you will. She knew that, and I guess Dad was impressed enough by what I was trying to do that his offer was to "come home" and help care for him - in return he'd pay for community college and/or certifications, plus a small stipend!

So, that's what I've been doing for the past almost two years - taking care of him, getting reacquainted, taking classes and certs as I can get the time to do so (he's almost 80 and needs a fair bit of care).

Hopefully I'll reach a point where I'm close to a shoo-in for a decent telecommuting job (I'm not looking for onsite work until after he's passed on), but there's no rush.

Thanks for all y'all's advice and encouragement - life is looking much better these days!

    Cheers!

Severe Hemophiliac looking at potential jail sentence in Ohio

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 07:55 AM PDT

I am 28 years old, have severe Hemophilia (Blood doesn't clot) and have court Thursday in Ohio. My charge is for driving under suspension, from 2009. I went to court in early 2010, pled not guilty, and never went back. I'm going to resolve this on Thursday and had a couple of questions regarding receiving my medicine while in jail.

What should I bring to prove that I have this disability, and what are the laws regarding them giving me meds while they House me? I assume that they can't just ignore my condition, and will have to pay for any treatment I receive. My prescription says I need 3 IVs per week, at a cost of about 6k a shot. I don't have insurance of any kind and am admittedly worried about possible injury or even death while in custody. What steps can I take if I don't receive treatment, and how long do these processes usually take? This condition is pretty rare, really serious and very expensive. I'm almost positive their nurses or doctors will not know much about it.

I work closely with my Hospital, but they haven't gotten back to me lately, although they said they will fax over any paperwork I need, including an "education letter", and a copy of my prescription.

Is there anything else I should be thinking about or bringing with me?

Can my boyfriend’s employer tell him on payday that they’re switching the pay cycle?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 06:02 AM PDT

My boyfriend works for a big computer company in NY. Their pay cycle is bi-weekly and he gets paid every other Friday. This past Friday he was due a check.

This specific company uses third party contractors to hire people, so my boyfriend was technically employed by the third party contractor. The contractor that they were using dropped out and a new company stepped in. He has gotten some emails about the switch but for the most part the employees are kept in the dark or given vague answers.

He came into work Friday and there was no check for him. Just an email sent that same day stating the new pay cycle., so he will get paid this Friday instead. This is our rent week and we were counting on that check. They never gave him or anyone else a notice that they wouldn't get paid. This also happened a couple of weeks ago and said that the previous contractor was unable to pay them. But then on Monday they all received checks from the new company to cover that week. This is not the case this time. All of the employees are angry.

    Is this legal?

Is political canvassing in a non-gated community with a “no soliciting” and “no trespassing” sign illegal?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 06:57 AM PDT

So this is a really specific question and has to do with something that happened to me today. To help with context, this is in Virginia and is not a private community.

I work for a political campaign in a salaried position, and was in a suburban upper middle-class neighborhood going door-to-door canvassing for the candidate I work for. I use a voter database that details specific voters to be canvassed in accordance with their voting patterns. I do not go to every single house.

The neighborhood I was in is not a gated community but has two signs at the entrance that says "no trespassing" and "no soliciting". Yes I saw these.

Upon leaving a property, a man across the street beckons me over, asks if I read the signs before entering, and informs me that if I am soliciting he could call the police to have me "put in cuffs and in jail." I politely informed him that I was campaigning, not soliciting and this act was protected by the 1st Amendment. He tells me that there is no difference, and that because I am soliciting, I am therefore trespassing (and also because I am not a resident of this neighborhood). He warned that if I continue, he will call the police and they will arrest me for trespassing and that they have "done it to others before." I acknowledged what he said, dismissed it as soon as I turned my back, and continued doing what I was doing without any incident.

I could not find any solid answer online anywhere, but is what I am doing grounds for trespassing and soliciting that could elicit a legal response?

It it illegal for a pediatric doctor to suggest vaccines are ineffective/harmful?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 02:58 PM PDT

    Location: TX

My girlfriend has begun working at a pediatric clinic where the doctor and nurse practitioner both believe vaccines are harmful/cause autism. They give other harmful advice. For example, a child had high lead levels and the suggested treatment was to apply peppermint oil to the feet. They and the other medical staff routinely give outright false medical advice to patients. Some of these patients are using their insurance to pay for these visits, others pay out of pocket. We are wondering if this violates any laws, and if so, how that would be reported.

Edit: thank you for the advice everyone. We will be reporting the doctor to the Texas medical board

    Ex girlfriend demanding money

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 08:52 AM PDT

    Canada Nova Scotia

My Ex girlfriend (who cheated on me) is looking for me to give her money back after she lived with me for under 2 years. I moved with her to her hometown and bought a house (solely in my name) and a Jeep (also solely in my name), we lived together in the house from June 2016 - Jan 2018, we broke up December 2017. (common law in my province is 2 years living together).

She feels she is entitled to money back as she "paid into the house", which all she did was pay me "rent" and money for use of my Jeep (which majority of the kms on it are from her as I work from home). There was just a verbal agreement that she would pay x every month and have access to the jeep.

My question is can she take any legal action against me and get money for the she lived in my house and used my vehicle?

[Canada] Bought something intimate at a sex shop. Former high school classmate leaked my purchase

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 11:19 AM PDT

    QC, Canada.

I bought a penis pump at a sex shop. It turns out that my ex classmate, someone who I really didn't get along with in high school (10+ years ago) is the manager there, and he pulled a security cam screenshot of me at the counter with the item (my face is visible) + a picture of the receipt (I guess they printed a copy).

He posted it to Facebook, and tagged a bunch of mutual friends. (Maybe noteworthy: most comments were calling him a douche but there were some big laughs).

Question: This particular sex shop has a ton of "no photography/no cellphones/no cameras" signs posted everywhere. My assumption is that I've got no recourse but is there any chance those signs apply to the business as well?

This all happened on Saturday. But today in the office someone has already made an offhand joke about it and this is just so very reminiscent of high school when this asshole was bullying me back then. I just want to know if there's anything I can do about this. Honestly I'm not a super sensitive guy but this is infuriating.

I plan to contact the corporate office (it's a franchise) but before I do so, I'd like to know my options.

(NJ) Trying to find out the reason my grandfather spent years in prison in the 50s

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 11:47 AM PDT

Hey Guys, im from New Jersey, and I hope someone on here can help. Basically, my grandfather went to Sing Sing prison in New York back in 1950, and he never told my father or anyone why. He spent ten years there, so we always wondered how serious it was. He passed a couple years ago, and me and my father have been trying to figure out what the reason was. I was able to get a hold of a couple documents from when he was put on jail, but the field for crime committed was blacked out (redacted?). There are some codes on there that I was hoping someone in the legal field would know the meaning of. Next to the field crime, it shows Vio Sec 483-A P.L. It doesn't look like this is allowing me to add pics unfortunately. Does anyone know what this could mean, or is there any other way of finding out?

    Neighborhood Harassment/Trespassing/Theft

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 07:50 AM PDT

    I Live in Ohio

A few years ago a friend of mine anonymously sent me a banner in the mail and it was roughly 4 feet long and read "CUNT." We thought it was funny, and eventually it made it's way to being hung up in our fenced in back yard. It has been there for about a year now, but last week a couple that were walking their dog stopped us while we were out front and started going off on us for having the sign (you can see into our back yard at a specific angle from the alley) saying that as a house full of straight white males, we cannot have that up on our property. We exchanged some words, which angered them. I wake up the next morning for work and the banner is gone. Later that day 3 men show up to our house and begin beating on our door (I was at work, one roommate was home) for over 45 minutes. He doesn't answer, multiple neighbors were worried about our safety, as we get along with them well. Next night, about 3 am, he shows up alone and we answer the door this time, he begins saying how he knows all about our families and where they live, I tell him to f off and go home, at this time his buddies drive by and unload paintball guns hitting me and the house.

I plan to call the cops today and explain this to them, although I am not sure how to prove it was them, I have found out the names of the couple. What sort of case can i build? I plan to put up a security camera in the back yard and put up a new banner. With pictures of them, will that be sufficient to bring justice? I only hesitate to involve the police because I feel nothing will be done by them, but i think it has escalated past this now

I want to be concise with my retaliation and not stoop to their level, I have never been in a scenario like this before and would like advice on how to handle this situation properly.

    Thanks

Fedex is trying to make me pay 5K for a shipment that they picked up without verifying the account

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 10:13 AM PDT

Hi, I sporadically sell things on Ebay. I sold two gas chromatographs to a guy who said he would take care of all the shipping if I just would package them up for delivery, which I did. Fedex calls me 9 times, once as some shipping company they have recently acquired called TNT. They call me 9 times to schedule a pickup and I keep telling them they need to contact the buyer. I contact the buyer and tell him that fedex needs to talk to him about the shipment. He says that everything has been taken care of and send me some generic bills of lading which I fill out. No where in any way have I ever agreed to pay shipping costs. Fedex shows up and takes the two skids and thats the last I hear about it until I get a bill in the mail for $5300.00 with a note saying they could not bill the account that set up the shipment, so they are going to bill me instead. I called there revenue department and said I am not responsible for this and they said it is their policy to bill the shipper if the receiver stiffs them on the payment. My wife and I have just had our second child we do not have $5300.00 to pay and they seem to suggest they are going to turn this over to a collection agency. I am super worried about this and do not know what to do other than to hire an attorney. Can someone here please help?

Psychiatrist is refusing to let me transfer services (RI)

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 09:02 PM PDT

I moved to Rhode Island this past September, and have been seeing this guy since maybe mid-September. I didn't care for the dude the first visit, but I had a lot on my plate and it had been hard enough to find a doctor at all, so I figured it would be okay.

From September to now, he's had me on Celexa, Prozac, Zoloft, and wrote me a 'script for Klonopin. There have been several changes in mg in between as well. He started me out on twice the maximum recommended dose for Prozac.

And really none of them have worked, or they have worked but not for long.

In my last visit with him, he asked how I was doing, and I told him--terrible. Suicidal nearly all the time. He scoffed and said "At some point you're going to have to realize the medicine can only do so much and you have to do the rest yourself."

This might be a perfectly acceptable response in some situations, but it felt at the time like he was handing me a death sentence because I cannot fix a chemical imbalance in my brain by myself. I have been working for years on my various mental illnesses with noticeable results, which he would know if he had ever bothered to ask in the collective forty-five minutes we've been together in his office since September.

I asked him what he suggested; I asked what am I supposed to do when I am anxious for three days straight with no inciting incident, how I am supposed to deal with that and he literally threw his hands up in the air and said "You're not!"

I went into panic mode for a little while after that meeting, thinking if this is a physiological problem and nothing more can be done, I basically have a terminal mental illness because I struggle so so hard not to kill myself on a way-too-regular basis. I do everything I can to ensure my safety by letting people know when i feel this way, surrendering medications to my bf, extreme (but necessary) things like that. If that isn't 'doing the rest myself,' I don't know what is.

I called another office, but they are in the same system. A system that more or less has the monopoly on psychiatric care in RI, and they have a policy that my current doctor and I must come to a mutual agreement to terminate services and transfer to someone else.

I find this policy ridiculous, but I emailed him right away and told him I wanted to transfer, and why. He gave me a not-apology and said he wanted to continue to work with me.

I am uncomfortable being seen by this man. I was uncomfortable prior to the last visit. That was just the last straw. So I reiterated that I still wanted to transfer. And he responded that he still wanted to talk about options. (He also mimicked my sentence structure, which may or may not have been purposeful.)

I am not giving this dude any more of my time. I do not wish to pay to see him again. He is overbooked until July, yet is still accepting new patients, which results in two minute office visits, sometimes not even that.

I just want free of this fool, and I don't know what my next step could even be.

I am open to non-legal courses of action as well (not illegal, but ones that do not involve legal action, haha) and anything anyone can suggest will be so appreciated.

TL;DR My psychiatrist is holding me medically hostage and won't allow me to transfer services after he basically gave me the ol' "have you tried not being depressed?" bit.

[Louisiana] My ex-wife has been exaggerating our child's medical symptoms, and I just found out that she has been prescribing him medicine herself. What can I do about this?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 06:11 PM PDT

    Hi, all.

I am in Louisiana. I have a two year old child with my ex-wife, who is a physician.

She has a history of exaggerating his medical symptoms (such as saying he's been vomiting, not eating, diarrhea, has a sore throat and is refusing to eat, etc.), although when he is at my house, he hasn't ever been sick like that. I will not go into details so as not to reveal personal information, but he has had two surgeries already in which he had to be intubated and sedated, and a third surgery is being planned. This child is NOT sick when he's with me. She took him to the emergency room five times in one month, and he regularly has 2-5 doctor appointments per month.

I've brought up my concerns to my lawyer, and so far, she has just had to switch pediatricians. I also brought it up to the court appointed custody evaluation psychologist, who said in his report that she may be overzealous but is just anxious and means well for the child.

However, I just found out that she prescribed him Zofran (a strong anti-nausea medicine, not first-line treatment for a two year old) a couple months ago. He was with me a few days prior to the prescription, and a few days after the prescription, during which time he was not sick at all.

So far, I haven't really had any proof that she's been exaggerating his symptoms, but I feel like the Zofran prescription could at least support my case that something is not right here. I know if her lawyer asks her about it, she will just say that our son was vomiting and she was scared or something, and that will be that.

I need to know what I could do about this. No one has really looked into this and I'm seriously concerned about what else she could be prescribing him without telling our kid's pediatrician.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Grown Man Harassing my little brother

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 10:55 AM PDT

Hello reddit, yesterday I caught my little brother sobbing, i asked him what was wrong but he wouldn't tell me, so later that evening I asked to borrow his laptop for some "work" because i had forgotten mine at my job place.

So i did a little investigating and found out he is being blackmailed by a 44 year old dude on facebook/discord etc. Basically my brother has a private discord with his school friends, where they talk about gaming/music. and another discord where they follow this soundcloud artist (the 44 year old blackmailer) anyways this soundcloud dude is aware that his fanbase is mostly children, and he acts and makes weird sexual remarks to them, so much that my brother and his friends made a running gag/joke on their private server that the guy was probably a pedophile, anyways someone lurked into his server and told the soundcloud guy about the "joke" literally like 3 screenshots of my brother and his friends laughing about their own joke. anyways the guy "very stupidly" began harassing my brother, calling him names and just being generally hostile, "threatening" that he will release those pictures of the conversation they had, calling him names and threatening to seek legal action for "defamation" if they dont post on his facebook wall and apologize to him saying " I am a stupid a jealous teenager, whos too much of a little bitch and lie about other people" etc.. He kinda gave them an ultimatum of 3 days to post an apology. I confronted my brother about it and told him not to worry, and blocked him several times, but he kept making alt accounts and being a crazy psycho about it. The guy lives in germany as far as his facebook can tell, and we live in the u.s. is there anything we can do? Does he actually have a case or any legal advantage if he does decide to sue?

    Thanks

My Question: Can my wife sell pottery from our garage? She wants to be able to open the garage maybe once a week or month and have people come in and buy her wares. Is this legal?

[IA] Need advice on what to do in this dangerous daycare situation

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 11:42 AM PDT

    Throwaway account

I have been working for a certified daycare center for a couple months, and there are some issues that the rest of the staff and I are not sure how to handle. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

There are these five children that come to the daycare every day from the time we open till we close. Every one of these children have had issues with following direction, climbing on furniture, and by far the biggest issue, they are physically aggressive with the other children. I've had to make several incident reports (report that we fill out for parents if their child gets hurt at the daycare) because of these kids.

They have kicked, pushed, hit, and even have punched other children while being here. They are a danger to all the other children and nothing is being done by the director. We are supposed to enforce a "three strike rule" where if children are having issues they are not allowed to come back. This is not being enforced.

Their mother has been arrested before for driving under the influence with her children in the car (she got a child endangerment charge), she is a known drug addict (not sure if she is using right now), and has had her kids taken away multiple times by DHS. I had to make a report to DHS a short time ago because the kids confided in us that they do not eat at home, which DHS is currently investigating.

Last week, after trying to get ahold of the mother to pick her children up (they were attacking other kids and needed to leave) we could not get ahold of her. When asked the next day if she had changed her number since it said disconnected every time we called, she got in my face and another staff members face.

I do not feel comfortable or safe closing everyday alone with these five children and their mother (they are always the last ones to be picked up). This woman is known for coaching her children to say anything she wants, and I do not want her to try and blame me or any other staff member for something that does not happen. I also don't want her to attack me if I'm there alone, which I think could be a real possibility since she got in my face for something mundane.

I guess what I want to know is what to do if anything. Our director knows about all of these issues (we write down any incidents that happen and include a time and date in a notebook just for these kids) and is not doing anything to help. We have had multiple parents threaten to pull their kids out because of these five children. I've already tried to get a meeting with the director but so far she hasn't responded. Sorry for the long post, we are just not sure what to do anymore. Thank you.

Previous owners of home want access.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 11:40 AM PDT

My husband and I bought a home and took possession on Saturday. We were pleasantly surprised to see that the previous owners had left their washer which is brand new; as well as a few other items that we are pleased to not have to spend money on, though the contract didn't list these items. This morning the owners are asking for our contact information. My gut instinct is that they've changed their mind about things they left behind. So far we've just said they can speak to us through our realtor as the meeting at our final walkthrough was rather contentious. If they are asking to come and remove things that were left behind do I have any responsibility to honor that?

Neighbor Painted Our Side of a Shared Brick Post While We Were on Vacation

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 11:16 AM PDT

We live in Toronto. We share a brick post with our neighbors (semi-detached house). We had our house painted last September. Before painting, the colour of said post was the colour of the neighbor's house. When we painted our house, we wanted to paint our half of the post the same colour as the rest of our house. Our neighbor said that would look "trashy." (The post being two colours) She told us to paint the entire post the colour of our house. I advised her that the colour we are using is big and bold, and are you sure you us to paint your side of the post? She said yes. We went on vacation last week. They painted the entire post back to the original colour. I don't care what they do with their side, but they did not ask permission to paint our side. Even though this is a shared post, is this considered trespassing and/or property damage? What can we do about it from a legal point of view? We are not on speaking terms because of other issues that have arisen over the past couple of years.

I went to get a massage yesterday and right at the end of the session I realized there was a camera on top of a shelf facing where the massage table was at (brand: nest camera) I confronted him, said that it turns off when arrives to his house and that turns on when he leaves, I asked him to check the nest app for the streaming of the video and the person went to the room pretending to get something but I could see the person on the phone probably turning the camera off from the nest app. I asked to be shown the cloud where the streaming gets recorded and he started to get very nervous, shaking and never showed anything. I left and I saw a YouTube tutorial for the nest camera and you can totally turn off the indicator light to go on incognito mode! The camera was connected to WiFi and plugged all to the wall all the time. The person said the camera light indicator turn green when but it the YouTube video I saw I realized that from the nest app you can turn this off to go more incognito. This and other details didn't add up, the person became super nervous and I don't know what to do. Please HELP. I'm freaking. I feel like everything I've accomplished in life can be jeopardize if this gets leaked online.

This is the message I sent him after realizing what the camera does: "This is crazy. You were lying about the camera turning the light on when is recording I just watched a video on YouTube and you can totally turn that off to go on incognito mode, you also turned off the camera when you went for your phone to your room in the app, the craziest part is that you can even share the live video to other people which explains why you took so long to open the door. You never showed me the camera history in the cloud neither! Also when I moved the camera you said it was facing the wall when you said before it was set up to see the living room, and with the nest camera you can totally change the setting to wide angle so it covers the whole perimeter.

I'm filing a police report. If you're giving massages you know you need to put down the camera but you didn't. This is fucked up."

I don't know even know why did I sent him that but I was having the worst panic attack of my life. PLEASE HELP.

This happened at his house, in the state of California (L.A).

(Maryland) Is my boyfriend able to kick me out of our house or break the lease?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 04:31 AM PDT

We're five months into a twelve-month lease (I have lived here for four and a half months). My boyfriend is the one who pays the rent, but shortly after I moved in he told me he sent a copy of my ID to the landlord and had me added to the lease, although I have never seen the lease. My boyfriend no longer wants to live with me, and wants me out as soon as possible. When I said I could be gone within a month, he told me that is too long. Rent is paid on the first of the month, but he says he is willing to pay to break the lease so he can walk away. I don't understand what would happen in that event—whether I would be obliged to leave immediately, or if there is a period of time before that takes effect.

Please help me understand my legal rights, if any. How much notice does he have to give me to leave? If he pays to break the lease, does that mean I'd have to leave immediately? Do I need to see the lease in order to get answers to those questions?

[FL] quick question about business refusing to give me change

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 07:10 AM PDT

Shady tow truck company that only accepts cash took my money and refused to give me change. I am owed 10 dollars.

What law might be broken here? Because I plan on pressing charges. After I have the money I was given a receipt saying I only paid the owed amount. When I asked for my change they said they "don't give change". I have a feeling as soon as I start this process they will offer to give me the 10 dollars, but it's not only about the 10 dollars, it's about the predatory nature of this company. They treated me awfully.

Thank you for any advice. I called code enforcement and they said tow companies in my area have no sort of loophole allowing them to not give change. They said they would help me get my money back but that just doesn't feel good enough. It was stolen from me.

Using Frank's Hot sauce in a recipe and selling

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 08:13 AM PDT

Hi. Does anyone know if I'm allowed to use a brand as an ingredient for a recipe and be able to sell it online? Are there any protocols on this? I live in Vermont. I actually kind of improved Frank's. Using the hot sauce as the base and then adding a bunch of ingredients to it to make a better wing sauce. Is it a problem if Frank's is the main ingredient?

[PA] Home inspector missed serious issue. Have been dropped from homeowners' insurance policy 1 month after settlement.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 06:18 AM PDT

I purchased my first house in the middle of February. I had paid a licensed home inspector to do a full check of the home before submitting an offer. Overall, he gave it a clean bill of health with the exceptions of some small odds and ends (it's a 100yr old brick home so obviously there's some small stuff). Fast forward a month and a half after settlement. My homeowners' insurance sends out a 3rd party inspector to take photos of the outside of the house and give it an external approval. Upon arriving, he finds substantial brick and mortar damage on the 2nd and 3rd floor bad enough that they immediately cancelled my policy (with a 30 day repair notice) and sent back my prepaid premium. They mailed the check to my old address so it took a week to get to me (my 4 weeks was cut to 3). Now I'm stuck with hiring a contractor to replace and repoint the whole side of the house before they will even consider insuring me again and a 3 week deadline to do so. I understand that I am a homeowner now and will have repairs. I managed to hire a contractor during peak season with a 2 week deadline but even he said it's gonna be cutting it close. My question is, shouldn't my inspector have seen this and been alarmed before we purchased the home? Is there anything that can be done or am I just stuck holding the repair bill after paying someone $700 to check something and missing something so serious that it makes my home uninsurable?

College dorms (in NC) in deplorable condition.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 08:01 PM PDT

    Throwaway account. Cannot name school.

Previously this year I brought up with one of the three heads of Res Live about how bad the conditions in the freshman dorms are. My main focus was the bathrooms. After a long talk he told me changes would be made. All that's changed is they added a coat of paint to the exposed pipes in my hall bathroom. Every other bathroom I have looked at in the building remains the same. I honestly don't know how to explain it, so I'll let pictures do the talking.

Today, while brushing my teeth I noticed the stale smell was worse than usual. It's been getting increasingly bad the last couple days, especially over the weekend, since cleaning is done Wednesday. I wanted to know what the smell was. I looked into the area where the de-commissioned bath tub is to see and smell this ( https://imgur.com/a/k8AgZJI ). Raw sewage leaking down the wall from the bathroom above. I have smelled sewage before, and I have no doubts that's exactly what this is.

I held down the impending ball of vomit in my throat and ran down to the office to tell my building head. I told her calmly what was going on and showed her the picture. In a completely unentertained and uninterested way, she told me "It's late (10PM) and nothing can be done tonight." Meanwhile the sewage is actively leaking.

Obviously this is an extreme health risk. It's been leaking for days at this point with no attention. What can I do here? Is this even legal? How can I ensure no other freshman class has to put up with this?
