Loyalty to Company/Co-Founders vs. Looking Out for Myself Posted: 29 Mar 2018 07:48 AM PDT I (26 year old, 4 years sales exp.) joined a SaaS tech startup about three years ago as the very first salesperson. Due to the fact that I covered the entire market and that every single sale was funneled through me, the first two years at the company have been very lucrative for me --$180k in 2016, $250k in 2017, but projected only $120k in 2018. We have now built out a sales team of 4 ppl so accounts have been split up between us. Unfortunately there has been crazy churn on my accounts for reasons that are out of my control and my book of business is by far the weakest amongst the sales team but my goals are still the most aggressive. I want to be loyal to my co-founders but at the same time I know that nobody is going to look out for me when push comes to shove. Another wrinkle is that we do not have a sales manager but rather our CEO (engineer by trade) manages the sales team. Here's the rub, I believe one of my biggest assets is my relationship with my CEO/co-founder and the influence he can have for placing me in my next role when the times comes for me to move on. Posted: 29 Mar 2018 05:46 AM PDT So I guess I'm finally on the big tech company's radar... after becoming an AE. I suppose these guys recruit AEs for BDR roles because their pay reflects it. Is anyone able to offer insight into what a BDR role is like at Salesforce? Or even selling Salesforce in general? Whenever I think about a sales job I think about who I'm selling to. I turned down an offer from Slack because I still dont understand their profit model. If I was a BDR at Salesforce, how hard do they grind you? I figure it's a pretty set in stone quota and career path. But who would I be calling? SMB owners depending on what part of their catalog I'm pushing? Asking for whom? IT wouldn't make this call, neither would HR. The Director of Sales / President would pull this trigger and influencing bottom up about CRM seems like a laughable endeavor, especially if they already have one in place (who doesn't?) People hype ADP but I did 4 rounds of interviews and decided I didn't want to sell to HR in a boiler room. TL;DR Is Salesforce all its cracked up to be to work for? New job doing home broadband Field Sales (door to door) - advice Posted: 29 Mar 2018 07:34 AM PDT Hi guys was looking for your opinion and a little bit of advice. I recently moved to Toronto from Glasgow in Scotland on a working holiday visa for up to 2 years and was recently offered a job as a Field Sales Rep for Bell Mobile on a 1 year contract. I have worked in a mobile phone store for over 7 years back home as a sales consultant, where I was consistently the top seller in my region, and I have experience converting customers into broadband sales. I was quickly offered a job here selling Bell home broadband services door to door. The basic is above minimum wage and the commission has the potential for you to earn big bucks if you manage to sell enough connections. Door to door field sales is something I've never liked the idea of, but I think I'd like to consider it now as the pay is amazing if I get good at it, and probably the best pay I can expect to get being a foreigner with only retail experience and a music business degree. I will also be outdoors during summer here which is usually sunny I'm Toronto, which will be nice compared to being stuck in a shop or an office, and I will gain new outside sales/cold calling experience which will enhance my CV. Also bell mobile are a huge company so good guys to get in with. The cons however are that I have never sold door to door. I have always had customers come into my space that want to buy. I realise that I'm going to be hit with a lot of rejection, which I'm used to handling but maybe not on the same scale... I am hoping because I am Scottish it might give me an edge as a conversation starter as Canadians seem to LOVE my accent. Also I like the idea that I am in control of how many customers I approach in a day, and I'm not limited by the customers that happen to walk into the store and I get to first. I'm also worried that by December the weather here drops to less than -15° for a few months. So hopefully I will have a car by that point, however I know this will be excruciating as I've never experienced those kind of temperatures.. Anyways I'm still thinking I should give it a try. Should I just give up on Sales as a career? Posted: 29 Mar 2018 11:18 AM PDT So, I took my first sales job a little less than a year ago. I work for a residential foundation repair company, 100% commission based. The company assigns me leads/appointments with customers, I travel up to 2.5 hours to their house, meet with them, diagnose their issues, design a solution, then attempt to close the sale. I've been running leads for about 7 months, anywhere from 4-8 appointments a week. Since I started my numbers have been...sporadic. I've been up, and I've been way down. 2 months ago my company instituted a 'minimum sales goal requirement', basically stating if your ADL (average dollar per lead) was not at a certain number by April 1st, you will be let go. Well, here we are on March 29th and there's no way I'm going to get my ADL to where it needs to be. I've already been informed by my manager what's going to happen at the end of the week if I'm not at that number. The question I'm asking myself is, Am I even cut out for sales? I've been told I'm 'too nice'. I give excellent customer service, extremely knowledgeable on my products, give excellent presentations, but yet....people don't buy from me. I just don't get it and I am beyond frustrated. I'm sick and damn tired of driving hours to a customer, spending 3-4 hours with them, just to be told Thanks, but no thanks and getting paid NOTHING for it. I feel like a total failure and I'm feeling very unmotivated when it comes to even imagining another sales job. I have been incredibly stressed out over the past couple months, it has effected my relationships outside of work, my income has been so low to the point where I'm behind on bills because it's either pay bills, or eat food at this point. I started in a B2B sales role for a small engineering services company and I'm more or less completely lost on what direction to go, how to utilize my time, etc. Besides a brief but successful stint in an MLM after HS, I don't really have any sales experience. I started at my current company as an engineer learning the services and procedures, then I moved into what is essentially 'inside sales' but basically just order taking from our current accounts. I recently negotiated a commission deal with my bosses (owner/partners), uncapped, with my base remaining what it was. The only other salesperson is my CEO, who is one of the owners. He is essentially my direct supervisor but he is very independent, rarely in the office, etc. The previous salesperson was an industry-insider type, independent sales contractor, but was very successfull. I don't have any scripts or much any guidance and I have almost full autonomy. I am pretty confident when it comes to warm leads and current customers, but I find myself very hesitant to prospect and cold call. I have a huge list in a CRM that has been developed over the years by my boss, but they've been neglected in light of our larger accounts. Considering all that and my current pay structure, I feel like the sky is the limit?? I have been reading the sub and reading/listening to books as much as I can. Just finished SPIN Selling and am starting on Fanatical Prospecting. I know I have a huge opportunity here but I need some direction to focus and start making sales. He was very open about what he had in the bank, where his technology is sitting, and how long he has left. His goal is to launch the product in 2019 and he wants me on board to help deal with investors, VC firms, and start to learn the product and help with development. He also wants me to plan to ramp up a sales funnel, and revenue. He has enough money in the bank now to last him 18 months, and the VC firm is going take a look at their progress in Q3 for another round of funding if needed. He did admit he does expect expenses to go up, but says with the 2nd round of funding they'll be fine. Its a huge risk and gamble, and yes I'm getting an equity position. What sealed the deal is he told me my salary would be 5% above my total compensation as last year (so thats my bonus, commission, salary, car allowance, etc etc I get all that plus 5%). So...I'm not losing money, and I'm young enough to gamble. He's having an agreement written up, I've reached out to a few attorneys to see if they'll review the document before I sign it. I will be President of Sales (is my title) I'll be involved product development, marketing, and sales (creating the entire sales division). Question regarding sudden quota change Posted: 28 Mar 2018 06:52 PM PDT Long story short I've had a really good beginning of the year during the first year of a new incentive program. I'm supposed to gain serious commission this Friday and end of April but have just learned they've held back majority of my commission for Friday and the check for April who knows. The check for April is for recognition in March so everything is already completed. They're saying they are going to almost double my quota all of the sudden so I do not hit the multipliers so soon. The proposed scenarios results in an insane loss. The quota letter does say they have the right to change but the payout disclaimer says they must inform of all changes in writing which I've yet to receive. Still being discussed this week..... so I'm sitting here going crazy. Has anyone experienced this and what options may I have ? Particularly for the sales recorded in Feb and March (which would be the commission payouts discussed above) Thanks for any insight [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Mar 2018 06:38 PM PDT I have been hired as an Account Executive "trainee" at a 3PL firm in my city with a $36k base and commission after reaching certain goals. I have been told that I won't be required to do any sales of my own until my third month into the job. I'll be trained to use SalesForce and more later on. Right now, I'm basically doing administrative work for Senior AEs and prospecting for their truck loads. I want to start focusing on building my own book of business while I'm still in the training phase so that I don't start with absolutely nothing. Particularly, I need to work on my prospecting (cold calling) skills. When there are loads that I need to find truck drivers for, I cold call drivers with information in the various CRM platforms we use to book our loads with them, or we do it if they call us. As a newbie, I flub with this despite having a "great personality" as some have described. Usually truckers are going in opposite directions from where the truck lane is, or I can't close them on a price to accept a load (typically from not offering enough money). How can I improve my closing ratio for these kinds of sales? I want to be great at this job! [link] [comments] |

Do I not describe my duties only my accomplishments that are quantifiable? Also I came from a start up where I basically set the benchmark and created the KPIs. It was a points system for activity. What exactly do they want to hear about quota, kpi's and total sales? I want to have my resume done professionally soon but I don't have enough time and this information would probably help in that regard. Also, during interviews since I am no longer an entry level they want to see numbers. What do I show them? Do I get into intricate amounts I pulled from salesforce? DM doesn't work at the school, the DM is on the volunteer board (PTA/PTO) almost all the time. The front office can be useful for information, but 99% of the time they will give you a generic PTA/PTO that never gets checked. Which audiobook would be best for me cold calling? Posted: 28 Mar 2018 03:42 PM PDT So after asking a series of questions to the r/sales community I have found that the best Audiobook for me would be "Fanatical Prospecting" The reason for this is because I am going to work a career that requires I generate my own leads, and call up businesses to sell Advertising to them. Apparently "Fanatical Prospecting" will help with the prospecting part. But will it help with the "Cold Calling"? What audiobook should I use in conjunction with Fanatical Prospecting for optimal results? I have heard ALOT about "Spin Selling" However I also heard from a Reddit user that "Spin Selling" would be of NO help to ME personally because I am a cold caller, and "Spin Selling" helps people who are face to face with clients. What other Audiobook would be good to use alongside "Fanatical Prospecting" Something that can help with the cold calling aspect of sales. This hiring phase will be one at a time staggered at about a 3 month period of time. We have a great sales program written up but as it is right now it is mainly face to face classroom training. Which means it take a ton of my time. I am trying to reduce the amount of training time, as I (the owner) cannot dedicate two weeks of straight classroom time to training anymore. I would like to digitze the course and record it via video. What are your thoughts if you were new and your training is mainly video based with daily interaction between courses? Should I go back to my roots? Or? Posted: 28 Mar 2018 01:44 PM PDT So a little about me, I'm 31 and when I was 18 I started selling cars, I sold cars for 11 years and I did well. Some of the best money I've made was in selling cars. When I was 29 I went to go work for a company selling toilet paper/soap/janitorial services etc and I actually did pretty well at that. Not as good as cars, but then again I only did it for a year because the company was terrible to work for and my manager was an idiot. Now I'm selling advertising, I love my product, I love what I sell, I think the world of my boss and i'm drowning. I've been at it for about a year and I've never really had any sort of success or sign that its working out for me. I think my challenge with advertising is because my clients have so many options, its intangible item, and then my work load as well. I have a ton of responsibilities which makes it hard to juggle everything. And for the first time in my 13 yr sales career I'm about to get let go...In fact I very well maybe unemployed come Monday and its because of performance. Now I've been coached, I've had other reps help me, management has helped me, but its just seems this isn't for me. I did have one deal that would have saved my job, but the client told me no today. Another thing is my current role, has very little structure. Which as great as it sounds and as hard as it is to admit, I think a negative for me. I can go weeks upon weeks without seeing a co-worker much less a manager. So I have been debating on what to do next, and my honest thought process is just to go back into car sales. Work my way back into F&I (I may even be able to start as an F&I guy) because of my experience. Why? Its because its what I excelled at. Sure I have to give up my weekends and holidays and work crappy hours but a lot of dealerships in this area are focusing on more work/life balance and so forth. My next thought process is to try and stay with B2B sales and sell something tangible, maybe go back into janitorial services, or parts, or something you can touch and feel. Posted: 28 Mar 2018 07:50 PM PDT timeshare company interviewed me the other day and now are saying that they are making a decision soon. theyre asking for verbal commitment while i still have other interviews, one with a credit repair company that pays 55k a year plus commision as well as an interview with a stockbrokerage. I have sold vacation memberships before and did very well but our product was wayyyy cheaper than these memberships...anyone have worked in timeshare before that has insight? What's a percentage of SDRs should be hitting quota on a well run team? Posted: 28 Mar 2018 04:41 PM PDT A little context: I recently applied for a job as an SDR. During the interview I asked what percentage of the team was hitting quota. They told me 60% were hitting the quota for demos and 40% hitting the target for closed deals. I sounds low to me, and the discussion moved on quickly and I didn't get a chance to ask why that was the case. (FYI They weren't being evasive.) The team (so far) seems great but I'm a little concerned about what those numbers may reflect. The Glassdoor reviews had mixed things to say about the sales team. Though some of them specifically sight that few people are hitting quota and the market is saturated. Honestly, I don't think the market is that saturated. I have one more interview.
