    Insurance denying payment for accident.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 07:11 PM PST

I wrecked my motorcycle at the end of my driveway and broke my femur. I called my wife and she ran out and called her parents to come take us to the hospital. While waiting I asked my wife to get me a bottle of alcohol to relieve me of some pain. Long story short, now insurance is saying they won't pay due to having alcohol in my system. Can I fight this?

Question on where to get repairs done after a fender bender.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 12:25 PM PST

Had a lady rear end me the other day. 100% her fault.

I got her info and took my car to a local auto body shop while I waited for her insurance co. to call me. They gave me an estimate of $2500 for repairs.

Lady's insurance company called me and recommended that I take it to a different auto body shop, but ultimately I could take it anywhere.

    My questions:

Does it matter where I take it? It sounded like her insurance company would pay regardless of where the repair work was done.

Will the shop the insurance company recommended likely be better? Or will it likely be worse since the insurance company wants the repairs to be as cheap as possible?

Should I get an estimate from the body shop the insurance company recommended? And then should I go with the shop with the cheapest estimate or the most expensive?

Or does it really not matter and I should find the shop with the highest customer ratings?

    Thanks.

    Question about settling a claim

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 03:48 PM PST

Hi folks. I need some advice.

My son was involved in a head in collision. He was a passenger in the vehicle that was hit. All things considered, he was very lucky as the vehicle he was in was a total loss. He ended up with a partially fractured arm. An orthopedic surgeon ended up having to break it all the way through and then set it. He missed some school and is struggling somewhat in a sport he normally excelled with. The doctor has released him completely and he is under no restrictions or disabilities.

His medical bills total just over $12k. The insurance company wants to settle with us for the cost of his bills plus $5k.

I have no experience with this and am curious if this is a fair amount? We are definitely not trying to swindle anyone but we also don't want to be lowballed.

    Any insight?

    Thanks a ton for reading.

    Requirements for motorcycle insurance?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 11:19 PM PST

Hello. I just turned 18 and I'm looking to get a motorcycle soon. I have my motorcycle permit and my drivers permit (yes both, apparently when I got my motorcycle permit, it restarted my c class permit, coincidently the same week I was able to take the test- I'll get it very soon though). My brother said I might not be able to get insurance for a motorcycle because I don't have a car or something like that. Can someone please enlighten me? Will insurance companies insure me?

I was in a one vehicle accident a couple of days ago. I just updated my insurance claim with my ER visit info and my vehicle insurance wants to deny health coverage, though I'm fully covered for $2,500.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 07:09 PM PST

I was in a single vehicle accident a couple of days ago. Here is a link to my lengthy post on r/legaladvice including the details if you're interested.

Here's my question for this sub. It clearly states in my insurance policy that I am covered for my medical balance of up to $2,500. After my ER visit, I updated my claim to inform them of the visit, everything that was said, and what the total amount for the service was. The Rep I've been dealing with said to send them the bill and that I was fully covered, but then I was transferred to a bodily damage specialist (I think that's what she said she was) only for her to say I don't have that coverage on my account. If they end up denying to provide support that is clearly stated in my insurance plan, what should I do?

Crosspost: r/Lawer: Friends house destroyed by tree, insurance claims gone wrong.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 10:16 AM PST

October of 2017 my friend buys his first house. On his property he has two 100+foot pine trees less than 6 feet from his house, (and we have had 3 major fires in the past 5 years) so insurance company tells him he has 1 year to take down the trees or they will revoke his policy, and he agrees and signs a document stating that he understands. One month later he gets a letter that his insurance has been canceled, (WTF!), they tell him has to get a quote for the removal of the trees ASAP, and that he must accept the earliest possible date for removal or they will not reinstate his policy. So he calls a tree removal company that is very well known in our area, and in 30 years has never had a single claim.

January 1st they come out, and the worst possible outcome happens. The first tree comes down just fine, the second tree breaks the jack and falls directly onto the house, cutting the roof in half and just fucking his shit up. He calls his insurance company and they tell him not to use the tree cutters insurance, that they will handle the claim and then seek damages later. He is displaced back to his parents house, and that is when the promises start. They promise to pay him 800$ a month in displacement fees + 5000 for food etc for the approximately 6 months they say he will be out of his home. 2 months go buy and he calls everyday, and his adjuster never answers, no rent check, no food check, nothing. Finally the guy responds, and tells my buddy that he is sending an engineer out to assess the damage, (keep in mind that its the middle of winter and no water proofing was done to the giant hole in the ceiling). Engineer says the roof needs to be replaced, and that's it. Simple right? Nope. Adjuster tells pal to call a contractor so he can get the cost of replacement. Contractor has to wait for Engineer to send him plans...

A fucking month goes by, at which point my buddy learns that the insurance company never PAID the engineer for his plans, so hes just holding them. Finally the engineer is paid and contractor and buddy go out to house. As they come up to the house the contractor stops, pulls out the plans and asks my buddy if this is the right house. Buddy thinks he joking, but the contractor is not at all joking. The right side wall of the house is split off of the house by about 4 feet, the chimney of the fire place is a further six feet off the wall, the house needs WAY more than just a roof. They pull the records on the house and it has asbestos in the walls, but to get a true indication of the damage they need to remove all the dry wall, so the insurance tells my buddy that the 32,000$ needed to do the abatement will come out of his claim (seems odd to me). Once that is done the contractor shows my buddy the previous plans, and asks if he approved the changes to the design, (the house had a hand built masonry fireplace, and vaulted tongue and grove ceiling, new plans have no fireplace at all, and standard ceiling). New plans have to be drawn up so that the contractor can rebuild the house "as it was" to assess the cost to rebuild, and then changes can take place. Again the insurance company fights over the engineers pay, and eventually my buddy pays him.

This is now 8 months into, and finally a check for 6 months of back rent comes in and a check for food, but because they are behind on the rebuild he will get another check, it arrives a month later. 9 months in now and he has been paid for 8 months of displacement, and the adjuster says that the contractors plans exceed his policy limits and his house it a total loss. Here is where it gets fun, he can either rebuild with less shit (ending up with less house than he started) OR he can take the total policy limit + 30% for displacement and find a new house (total amount 232,000). He owed 115,000 on the house and 32,000 will come out for the abatement, leaving him with 85,000 - 11,400 he has received in displacement and he is looking to get about 70,000$ (plus the cost of his possessions which is not part of that figure). He decided to go that route, at which point they were LATE on paying of his mortgage, and then when he went to buy a house they started adding neat little stipulations.

Here is where it is at now, they say his land (with the broken home) is worth 100,000$, and as such he must buy a home that has an assessed land value of no greater than 100K, otherwise he will not receive the full sum, BUT he must also find a house that is identical in features 2 bed, 2 bath, 1300 sq ft, and if he gets one that is cheaper with less features or more expensive with more features he will also not receive the full amount. This bullshit has been going on till today, at which point my buddy has now been out of his home for 13 months, and the insurance is telling him that he MUST get a new house by the end of this month or he forfeits the remaining money. Does this sound normal to anyone? I told him he should talk to an attorney, but he doesn't want to spend 500$ to talk to someone because he is just basically broken at this point and has almost lost the will to care at all. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Apartment roof leak leads to a damaged PC

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 05:42 PM PST

So about a week ago my drop ceiling started leaking right into my PC, causing at least $1,000 damage. It didn't come from the above apartment, but from the roof/exterior of the building during a rain storm.

The bad part is that I don't have renter's insurance. I know, that's my fault, but some people told me the landlord's insurance should still cover for something like that.

He has since been over and has contacted roofing companies. He also said he spoke to the building's insurance, and they said that they don't cover that (damages to anything within the building). He was nice enough to give me the name of the insurance company and the specific group under that name. So I was going to try contacting them, but not sure what to say or ask, or the chances that they would even be liable for something like this.

I live in PA btw. Would appreciate any sort of feedback/advice.

How do “resolves” medical conditions impact life insurance premiums?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 04:50 PM PST

    Edit: title should say "resolved"

Long story short, 10 years ago I was diagnosed with hypertension when I was an underslept, over caffeinated, unhealthy eating and non exercising 23 year old. I was prescribed a pill which I took for about 3 years which had my pressure under control.

Fast forward 3 years and healthier life choices, and my new doctor took me off the pill. My blood pressure has been normal now for 5+ years since with biannual checks.

Curious how this factors into a premium for Term life insurance I would like to purchase. I carried a diagnosis and was treated for blood pressure in the past, but it's clearly a non issue for years now. Is it typically treated as if I actively have hypertension, never had it, or somewhere in between?

Medical bill issue question, terms are very confusing

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 06:16 PM PST

So I have Florida Blue, high deductible plan as a state employee.

2 months ago my wife went to see a doctor and said she had to pay $130 for the visit. I looked at my claims today and it said the provider billed FB $150, discounted $108.50, and the "Member Responsibility" is $41.50. I already have a message out to my insurance company but maybe someone can help explain all this.

Does this mean we owe another $41.50? Did her provider over charge for service and they owe us $88.50? Was the $130 correct?

On my statements it says we've paid $41.50 towards our deductible so what's the deal?

I don't care how much it costs I just need to know what all this means. She has an appointment next week again and is there anything special that I can ask for, like some kind of bill showing what is truly owed? When I went to the dentist I got print outs showing "This is what we charge, this is what we bill the insurance company, this is what they pay, and this is what you owe us." It was very clean and clear as to how much I personally had to pay.

I will also call them tomorrow and find out what's what and if we were over charged what to do from there.

(online course) Is there any way to speed up the time requirement or let the time run out while I'm not at my computer?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 05:56 PM PST

Hello, I'm currently trying to get my 52 hour CA Life, Health, Accident, and Disability Insurance License and I was wondering if there's an easier way to tackle this time requirement duration. I'm taking the course through Mike Russ (a company from San Diego) and their course has a time requirement that's posted once you enter the online course. If my mouse is idle for more than 20 minutes the system gives you a warning like a few minutes prior and then logs you out. I've tried to use an auto mouse tracker so it doesn't seem I'm idle while I'm out at my other job and it seems to have worked but then once I clicked continue on the lesson it says that I have been logged out due to inactivity and then my time requirement goes back to where it was originally.

I'm trying to complete this as fast as I can so I can take the test for my job. Any help would be appreciated!

Best way to obtain insurance (Car + Home)

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 11:56 AM PST

I guess blatantly stated, what is the best way to go about purchasing insurance? I use Progressive currently for both auto and home insurance and get a multi policy discount. I've also heard that using an agent to get your insurance can be a lot cheaper. Is there value in staying with the same company? Is it better to find an agent that can find a better deal for you if that means hopping to a different company? I don't know that I could save a ton either way but every little bit helps.

    Massachusetts parked car damage

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 11:54 AM PST

My neighbor hit my car this morning. Left a note with all nec. info.

    1. Do I need to contact my ins. co. and will doing so affect my ins. rate?

    2. All scheduled maint. is performed by dealer. Can I take it to their autobody or am I at the mercy of my neighbor's ins. co. ?

    3. Do I even need to wait for their claims adjuster?

I've taken zero steps so far. 1st accident, not sure of procedure.

    Thanks in advance

Personal Insurance company sent me a letter for payment

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 02:49 PM PST

A few weeks ago I was walking through a parking lot and I accidentally clipped the side mirror of a parked with my shoulder causing damage to it. I went inside the business the car was parked outside and found the owner and gave her my contact info. Obviously, I was walking and I don't have insurance that would cover the damage I asked her to not file a claim through insurance. I asked her to get a quote through her mechanic and let me know the amount.

Well, today I received a letter from Travelers Personal Insurance Company requesting I pay $234.36.

Now I walk by her car everyday after work and the damage still hasn't been fixed.

Of course I'm pissed she filed a claim and didn't just call me but obviously I can't change it. What steps should I take? I know the damage isn't $234. Can I negotiate down? Can I not pay it?

At the bottom of the letter is states "if we do not hear from you within ten days of this letter, we may refer this matter to our legal counsel for evaluation, which may result in civil litigation and additional expenses."

How does totaling a car work?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 02:46 PM PST

I was victim of a hit and run accident and the insurance has decided to total my car. They say it will cost $7k to fix it but they are going to cut me a check for $12k. I don't understand. Why don't they fix the car rather than pay me out? I've never had a car totaled before, I did have an accident about ten years ago in a cheaper car with worse damage that was not totaled.

Looking for a better car insurance provider, advice?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 12:35 PM PST

I live in New Hampshire and currently have Geico - I've had Geico since I got my first car 5 years ago and it never occurred to me I could shop around and find something better, either in price or at least increasing my coverage for what I'm already paying which is about $68 monthly or $760 for a yearly premium.

Currently this is my coverage: Bodily Injury Liability $25,000 per person/$50,000 per occurence Property Damage liability $25,000 per occurrence Medical Payments $1,000 per person Uninsured Motorist Bodily injury 25,000 per person/$50,000 per occurrence.

Thank you for any information/advice you may be able to offer!

also, I've never made a claim, I've never even been involved in an accident if that is important.

    Total Loss Value Question

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 12:16 PM PST

    Florida (policy holder)

A vehicle was in an accident over a year ago and is still having issues related to the accident. The newest issue the vehicle is having now places the vehicle at a total loss.

The insurance company ran a value on the vehicle this month, is the owner entitled to the value of the vehicle at the date of loss or as of the most current date?

Most importantly, is it stated in the policy somewhere or is there a law to reference?

    • The cars in the oncoming lane were at a halt due to the red light.
    • The car coming behind me swerved around me and hit a car in the oncoming lane, head-on

Travel Medical Insurance? - Taiwan to USA

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 07:49 AM PST

My fiancée's family will be traveling from Taiwan to the US this summer for our wedding.

What kind of insurance should we get so that they can be covered? It is a man, his wife, and their two young kids. Is this something that would be purchased from a Taiwanese company or an American one?

Any guidance is appreciated. They have never been to the US before, so I'm not sure what the right thing to do is.
