What business solutions do you use for client transactions?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 09:30 PM PST

I'm in the process of starting my own photography business as a hobby. I work in finance, so I have a pretty good handle on the general business side of things. However, I want to make sure I've covered all grounds and looked at all options before officially launching.

I'm curious, as small business owners, what provider do you use for accepting online and in-person transactions? The fees for PayPal Business seem steep, but I'm not well-versed in this area...Any suggestions, advice, or solutions are appreciated!

Figured I'd share our new stores sales numbers

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 08:21 PM PST

It's hard to find real retail numbers for new stores, so I figured I'd show my data with the community. The store is a small retail grocery store geared towards a particular ethnic community. But around 25% of our sales comes from the local community. Can't give too much identifiable info but here is some data some might find interesting :

Month Average per Day Total for Month Days Opened
    Aug $103 $1,160.91 11
    Sep $170 $4,416.83 26
    Oct $270 $7,031.19 26
    Nov $384 $11,637.55 30
    Dec $617 $18,213.17 29
    Jan $528 $15,229.63 29
    Feb $544 $14,731.20 27

    • When it snows or rains, sales go down drastically. February weather was horrible.
    • Average product markup is around 40%.
    • Facebooks ads did nothing for us. Google ads on the other hand, winner hands down.
    • I am not a retail veteran. I'm actually a software engineer and we're learning as we go along.
    • We're using Vend for our POS and have the loyalty program setup. Customers love it.
    • I like Vend but expected more from their reporting tools. Lots of little issues that I find annoying and did not expect.
    • We're ok with not making a profit for a couple of years. Breaking even is good enough for us.
    • Competition is fierce. 5 other stores exist nearby. They ain't happy with us. We're social media savvy, we're friendly with customers, the store is always clean and bright, we sell all our products at lower prices.
    • Several competitors have visited our stores wearing disguises (not literally). But they do shop with their heads down.

All in all we're happy with where we are.

Do I Need A Business Checking Account For My LLC?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 09:14 AM PST

Hey everyone - I had a quick question about whether I really need a business checking account for my business (an LLC).

For context, I keep all of my business and personal expenses and accounts separate. I have a personal checking account and a separate business checking account at my bank.

That said, I'm switching banks and my new bank doesn't have an official "business checking account." They just have checking.

Can I use a regular checking account for my business or do I actually need a business checking account?

Meeting with a large-ish retail grocery store to get my product on their shelves. What questions should I ask or red flags to look out for?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 09:43 AM PST

It's all pretty much in the title. But for a bit more info, I sell direct trade coffee and I'm meeting with my first potential retail client. What questions should I ask the buyer and are there any red flags or traps to avoid?

    Thanks in advance.

Advice Needed: How To Turn Down A Client

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 07:39 PM PST

Help! Is there a job title for my position?!

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 05:25 PM PST

I work at a locksmith shop with less than 10 employees. I pretty much do all the paper pushing, data entry, collections, fullfilling insurance requests, mailing keys, bank runs, end of month closing, answering phones, etc etc. I mean, I'm basically the personal assistant to the mostly retired owner. But I can't be called that. I'm not just a clerk, but I don't have a bookkeeping degree or anything. I was thinking "Accounts Manager" but online, that means something totally different, since I don't manage other people....argh!!

So the question is, how do I express all the stuff I do without faking some non legitimate degree claim? Any ideas?

    Slogan for my website

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 06:46 AM PST

Hi everyone, I've come up with two different slogans for my website. Can I get some straight up unfiltered feedback about it? To give some background, I will be selling organic medicinal mushroom extracts. The majority of brands currently put in 'fillers' and try to sell you based on false information on their heavily diluted products. Also certain mushrooms are scientifically proven to enhance your immune system, cognition, overall energy and more. Ok so given this information, these are my two ideas. Any and all feedback and ideas are welcomed!

    1) Be mushroom optimized

    2) No fillers. No BS. Just pure organic mushrooms

Advice on becoming a "legal" business? (Types of corporations, etc.)

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 03:05 PM PST

Hey everyone, I'm looking for some help with filing the appropriate forms to becoming an official business. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this; if I'm in the wrong place let me know!

In short, a group of my classmates and I have created a study group/campus navigation platform and recently things have been picking up. We have a two big pitches coming up in the next month, and want to plan for the best case scenario.

As we continue to grow, and if we get investors, we will need to pay our employees. We were beginning to look into the official filing forms with the state and IRS, and got stuck on choosing how we want to structure our business.

We have a lot of questions, but these are the biggest ones:

    • Should we wait for investments before filing the appropriate forms?

    • How should we structure our equity/stock? I saw that we needed to give a specific number of different kinds of stocks when I was looking through the C Corp application in my state (VT) and was unsure of that.

    • How should we structure our business? (S Corp, LLC, C Corp, etc. I understand the liability aspect of it, but what kinds of businesses should be using each structure?)

    Thanks for reading!

How can I get better online reviews? I'm at 2.8 starts and only 6 reviews.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 11:16 AM PST

I've been working at a doctor's office for many years now as an office manager and we're struggling to get new business. I've been reading statistics about reviews and I saw that they can be as much as 90%+ of bringing in new business. I've looked into some reputation management companies but they're all around $300 a month. Are there any other better options out there?

xpost from r/architects: I need advice on a build out in Portland, OR.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 02:57 PM PST

Hi Reddit! I leased a 1300 sqft space in October 2017 to build out a coffee shop. I hired architects and had them draw out plans and everything. This was my first time hiring architects so I wasn't fully educated on all of their services. I normally just hire a GC and he / she will design the space.

It took them four months to draw up plans at a total cost of $10,000. Not including paper / ink charges, gas charges, and permitting fees.

They recommended some GC's who provided astronomically high bids. And now we're in permitting stages and my architect is saying that they drew up MEP's "As built", but they aren't allowed to submit it. They told me that the GC we hire will sub out the drawing of MEP's and then submit it under his stamp.

I was under the impression that the architect was supposed to submit MEP's?

Let me know if I'm wrong! I'm still learning, still researching everyday. I just want to know if this is normal practice, or if I'm getting ripped off.

    Thanks guys!

    Employee Engagement Selling

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 02:22 PM PST

    Hi Guys,

I've recently managed/facilitated several projects for my company concerning employee engagement and retaining top talent. I've been successful in designing group specific surveys and meeting formats and translating employee needs and survey responses to actionable plans with direct results on employee engagement and organizational efficiency. All my work background is in IT Infrastructure and Systems Engineering. I've really, REALLY enjoyed these projects. Maybe it's because I actually listen to the people :). I would love to turn this newfound ability into a consulting firm/full-time business. My questions are, is there further education I should pursue in this area to further qualify myself? (I currently have no degree or conventional HR education) Also, how would I market this ability best to small business owners? (Ideally to help them understand the massive impact full employee engagement can have on operational efficiency and retaining talent/turnover rate)

    Thanks in advance!

Which landing page for Google AdWords?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 01:23 PM PST

I'm planning to spend a small amount for AdWords and see what results I can get. I know a landing page is crucial to getting people to act. The issue is I have 3 possible domains I can use. I have my formal company website, where I'm working on a landing page. My second choice is my personal website, and my 3rd option is my Google Business free website, which is very clean and simple. The main question is, would it be a waste to spend money on AdWords to send to a somewhat generic Google business website?

Market Analysis Surveys for Small Business Owners?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 01:05 PM PST

    Hey all,

I'm doing my pre-research on a business I want to start and I want to send out a survey to my target audience which is small business owners that have a brick and mortar locations (owners of boutique stores, restaurants/bars/coffee shops, etc). I've seen that I can pay places like Survey Monkey Audience but so far it's clocking in at about $300 for 50 responses to 10 questions...which seemed a bit steep to me. So I guess one question is, is that a typical price I'll see for market research with a specific target audience? I have a product/service which I feel fills a niche but I want to be sure that the demand is actually there. Having never done this I'm not sure what is overpriced for surveys or not.

I was thinking of creating my own survey on there and going out and trying to find my audience to poll. As I'm sure a lot of you are my target audience, is there a website or a forum where physical store owners go that might be open to answering some of my survey questions? I figured posting a survey on this subreddit would be considered against the rules.

    Thanks in advance!

Gauging Interest for a Small Business IT solution

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 10:24 AM PST

I was hoping to get some feedback from my targeted user base to see if there's any interest for something I'm developing.

Essentially it would be a replacement for your router in your office. Using a web interface, you can set up users and departments/roles customizable to your business. The router also functions as a file server, allowing you to customize access to each users/departments/misc projects folder. It's also a webserver for external/internal websites, with a plug in for WordPress, and the ability to import your current html/php/Javascript website's code. VPN allows you to be anywhere in the world with internet connectivity and have your laptop think it's back in the office.

Once you have the router set up it's easy to connect your computers. Just plug a USB into the router, click a button, plug it into your computer, and run the setup file.

I would like to open source the code, so the IT savvy could make sure it's secure, and even install it on their own servers. I would sell them as pre-configured routers with 6 months of support included and support/warranty packages.

I think it could help businesses that have grown to the point where they should start considering an IT employee/MSP, but don't want or can't spend the amount that would cost. Thoughts, questions, comments, concerns, calls for pitchforks?

Quarterly Taxes for New Sole Proprietorship

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 07:44 AM PST

I recently started a sole proprietorship with my online tarot business. Started in mid Jan with a big thanks to everyone on this forum! For quarterly taxes, how would I estimate them if it's newly created this year and I have a FT job so last year's salary isn't really reflective of my business earnings this year? Business has been steady, but I'm not sure I can estimate monthly earnings/expectations for the rest of the year, because it's still so new. I did find an accountant to help me with this as the tax season deadline approaches, but I'd just like to understand a bit more. Thanks!
