Considering a career as Claims Adjuster in Pennsylvania. Should I take the online classes to get a license?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 06:53 PM PST

What is my best path to take towards a career as a insurance Claims Adjuster in Pennsylvania?

I have about ten years of sales experience in telecommunications (cellphones, landline internet/phone/tv service)

I also have a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management.

Should I take the online classes to get a license or will a company hire me at entry level and pay for the classes?

I'd greatly appreciate any insight you all may be able to offer.

Do I need insurance before buying a used car from a private seller?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 06:55 PM PST

We're buying a used car from a private seller. Meeting them at a notary to transfer the title/handle registration. Do I need an insurance policy on the new car before doing this? Or can we get the car and then handle insurance in the following few days?

I do have an existing insurance policy on our current car if that helps

    This is in PA.

Car Insurance - Do I have to accept full repair under insurance?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2018 12:35 AM PST

    Hi Everyone,

My car was recently involved in a collision and there is damage to the side of the car that requires new bodywork/repairs to the bodywork. In the collision, I ended up driving my car up a grass verge on the side of the road and something underneath snagged a handful of electrical cables and pulled them out their sockets, shutting the ending down. The garage will be taking a look at the car tomorrow to figure out the extent of the damage. Obviously if there's structural damage then the car is undrivable until repaired and made road-worthy.

My question is - If I am concerned that the repair cost will be high and cause my car to be written off, does the garage have to do a full repair on the car to the point where it is as-new, or can they do the minimum necessary repairs to make it road legal again, and I will arrange for the body to be fixed myself out of pocket?

My Geico rate practically doubled for apparently no reason

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 12:51 PM PST

Hi all, I live in Los Angeles and drive a 2013 VW Golf. Bought it used in March of 2017, and bought a policy with Geico for about 100/month. Went with them over State Farm, Progressive, etc because they had the lowest rate. I'm 25 and a very safe driver, never had an at-fault accident in my life, but don't make a ton of money so the economics were the biggest factor.

I understand that every six months when your policy is renewed, the rate changes slightly based on the company's claims, etc. for that period. So in September 2017 my rate went from ~100/month to ~108/month, which i was fine with.

My policy just renewed again for March 2018 and my rate jumped to 195/month! That's ridiculous. Again, I've had no at-fault accidents ever, and nothing has changed with my driving record in the last six months. Why did this happen? I'm about to call them and see what's up (I'd rather change companies entirely, this is BS), but wanted to get the community's reaction first. Thanks!

Edit: I called and they didn't really have an explanation for me, so I'm going somewhere else. Metromile looks like the way to go for me - my daily commute is < 5 miles/day so I can get a rate below $100/month with them. Beautiful. Thanks all for the replies!

Phone battery caught on fire while charging and burned the carpet. Im assuming I can claim it?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 05:53 PM PST

I'm assuming this is something I can claim on my homeowners insurance? I'm 23 and just bought this house so I am pretty clueless when it comes to homeowners insurance. Is there anything I should or shouldn't say or do to make the process go smoother and work more in my favor?

What kind of insurance do I need as a live-in landlord / homeowner with roommates? (lodgers)

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 05:40 PM PST

My insurance said I needed regular homeowners insurance but it seems I would lose liability coverage as a landlord.

When I suggested landlord insurance they said I should base it off if I lived in the home or not. (Which I do).

I can't help but feel misled, as a homeowners insurance wouldnt cover things like loss of rent, or landlord liability.

Can anyone shed some light on this grey area?

I'm starting to do research right now into companies etc. I want to look into field property but I haven't gotten my driver's license back yet so that's a big kicker that I'm trying to take care of before I depart. Any companies to look into in the CT area that anyone can suggest?

I’m too rich to qualify for State Medicaid for my daughter but too poor for actual insurance. What now?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 05:25 PM PST

My daughter has been on Medicaid for health care since she was born. It was United healthcare Medicaid, and everything was fine. When trump switched things up, it discontinued her insurance but then quickly reinstated it but with the CHIP program meaning I'd have to pay $20 a month. I have been paying and then 2 months ago my boyfriend (her father) lost his job and bills got tight and so I admit I missed two months of payments and ironically was planning on paying it with this paycheck on Friday. Got a letter in the mail stating that her insurance is discontinued as of 3/31 and that due to my income I apparently don't qualify for any Medicaid anymore. In other words... I'm fucked. I'm now trying to look to see what insurances can cover JUST her seeing as I'm on my parents until I'm 26. (I have two more years to go and I'm tryna milk it as long as I can cause medical bills aren't cheap). Every time I find a site that tries to give me a quote it doesn't let me say it's for someone under 18. I'm new to this even though ironically I work with insurance everyday (not policies but I work in a medical office). Any ideas?

TL;DR: my daughters insurance got cancelled and we no longer qualify. Need a single insurance plan for her quickly and need ideas.

Anytime I see an insured with a newer model car and $1k + deductible

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 04:39 PM PST

95% of the time you can tell that they probably couldn't afford the car or didn't consider insurance before they signed the loan agreement. That conversation never gets old.

Claim against me in auto accident involving winter weather

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 04:36 PM PST

    Hi guys,

So I am in Minnesota and two weeks ago traveling on the interstate while trying to switch lanes, my car slid on the ice and spun around completely (the morning after a snow storm; had to be on the roads for a job). While I was stuck in the middle of the lanes for a bit, another car sideswiped me and went off the road. I pulled off the road as well and rushed to check on the other driver. They said they were okay and not injured and we surveyed the damage, and it appeared minimal. Their driver's side hubcap in the back had some damage to it and my passenger's side hubcap in the front had some damage, in addition to a small dent on my door. A policeman came, we exchanged insurance information, and a tow truck helped pull his car out of the snow. Nobody was ticketed. I called and informed my insurance (Geico) and he had Progressive. Over two weeks after the accident, Geico called me to say he had filed an injury claim using an attorney (soft tissue injury). They asked me to recount what happened, so I did. The person from Geico was very nice and assured me I'd be taken care of and made it sound just a regular step in the process. She also assured me this wasn't about being sued (which I inquired about), but I am still worried (she said that if that changed, Geico would assign me an attorney). She made it sound as if it was mostly about coming to a settlement. How concerned should I be? I do not know much about auto insurance.

[Update] Title insurance moving slow. Is this normal?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 01:53 PM PST

    Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Insurance/comments/7ymyb0/title_insurance_moving_slow_is_this_normal/

Didn't really get much the first time, but thought maybe you guys would enjoy an update.

I was getting pretty irritated that the lawyer for the title insurance kept putting me off, so I emailed him every morning for three days in a row. Finally he asked to set up a time to discuss over the phone, and he told me the company didn't "like" my claim. He hinted that they thought it had the potential to either turn into a prolonged legal issue or become a very expensive construction job. So he says they want to settle.

I was expecting them to offer something like $3000, and I had previously decided I wouldn't accept anything less than $8000. They offered $10,800, and I agreed. Settlement has been signed and check is on its way.

Since the base is next to a hill, I think I will just bury it instead of removing it.

Door ding in parking lot - What should I do?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 08:51 AM PST

Hey Reddit! First thing is first, I am not petty and doing this to make a couple bucks. I generally let these things go, but this situation is a bit different which I will outline below. For reference, I drive a black 2007 Lexus is250. It already has some minor scratches and all that good stuff, so generally, this altercation would not have bothered me too much.

    https://imgur.com/a/RK8fg

So here is a little snippet for you to follow along:

On Monday, as I was leaving Microcenter @ approximately 2:33 PM, I noticed the driver of a car parked next to me hurriedly loading things into the rear passenger seat of her 2014 Corrolla. I noticed that the door seemed dangerously flailed out, and as she was rushing back to her seat to leave I decided to check out my rear driver door. Lo and behold I noticed a door ding that took off a bit of paint, can't be bigger than the size of a quarter - but deathly noticeable. I proceeded to call out to her, but she was ignoring me so I knocked on her window to get her attention and politely asked, "Did you happen to hit my car with your door?" to which she immediately deny. I proceeded to ask if I can open her door and check to see if it would line up, which it did perfectly. Adding on to that there was black paint on the side of her door and silver on my car. As she realized this she began talking down on me, pointing out all the other imperfections on my car repeatedly saying "Oh! Me too!" with a big sarcastic smile on her face. I would have honestly let this go if she admitted to the fault, but instead, she decided to be rude. Because of this, I decided to ask for her insurance, which she refused to do so until I lost my cool and angrily demanded it (not proud of that). I have pictures showing the damage on my car as wel as the lineup of her door and the ding. This event took about 20 minutes to resolve due to her unwillingness to be civil about the matter. Did I mention she had a kid that couldn't be more than 2 in her car the whole time? I am unsure as how to proceed.

TL;DR Long story short, someone dinged my car in the parking lot, refused fault, belittled me, and was flat out uncooperative. We exchanged insurance information and now I am unsure of how I should proceed.

Should I make a claim? Should I call my insurance or theirs? Will my rates go up?

I honestly would have let this go, but I am considering all of these other things because she was just so mean and rude.

I am in my 20s and she is in her 40s and live in California.

Use my own contractor or insurance's preferred contractor?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 05:15 PM PST

To make the intro as short as possible: Home was damaged and I need it repaired.

Insurance gives me the option to:

    1. Get my own contractor, who already took a quick look told me what he thinks needs to be done. This was a reference provided to me and he did some stopgap work that I was happy with. I got a good feeling from him and the little work he did already, but I don't have a lot of external reviews to confirm how he'd do with the final job. What insurance would cover of his work is subject to what the adjuster says.
    2. Use the insurance-approved contractor, who I checked has pretty good reviews on angieslist and such, and it comes with a guarantee for a few years. They have not come out to give an estimate yet, but verbal confirmation on the phone from desk adjuster sounds like they expect to cover what my own contractor said needs to be done.

I know that the gut reaction is that a contractor working for insurance has their interests and constraints in mind more than your own contractor, but wanted to see if there was more that I am missing. It seems like they both take the same general approach to the repairs and everything is subject to the adjuster's final numbers either way. I obviously wouldn't know until the job was already underway/done though.

    Thanks for any advice.

Quit smoking about a year ago, but never quit nicotine gum. Should I be honest about the gum to a life insurance underwriter, or lie and wait a couple weeks to take the physical till I can pass a nicotine test?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 03:16 PM PST

What hidden details should I look out for with life insurance quotes? A quote from one agency was significantly less than the other for what appears to be the same coverage.

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 03:15 PM PST

Allstate quoted me about half of what State Farm quoted on a $250k 30 year term policy. If it were a few dollars difference, I wouldn't be so concerned, but about $32 difference a month seems like quite a jump.

I am going to follow-up with the Allstate agent to figure out if there is any sort of catch, but is it possible that the rates will be quite a bit higher once we go through underwriting? Is there sometimes a certain amount of time required before the insurance actually kicks in? Anything else I should look out for? Thanks for the help.

Buyers Remorse on Supplemental insurance policies; how do I cancel and will there be any charges?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 03:14 PM PST

    Hi guys,

So, my local union had this company who offered a free $4,000 life insurance policy; in implementing and beginning my coverage, the agents came to our house and had my wife and I sign the policy. They began to give us the "we have some additional supplemental policies, it's required that we offer but not required that you sign up for any in order to get your $4000."

As they progress through funeral coverage, mortgage payoff coverage, salary coverage, and dependent coverage- I found myself, unknowingly, buying into their pitch. Long story short, I walked away with a coverage plan that is going to cost me $156/month. Today, everything sunk in and I realize the mistake I made, not needing any of these coverages at this point in my life. How do I cancel these policies and would I incur any changes?

Edit: This was just yesterday that we signed paperwork.

Insurance letter to court for speeding ticket?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 01:29 PM PST

One of my requirements of ticket dismissal

"Defendant shall maintain the minimum liability insurance coverage required by law from the date of this Order to XXXX and submit a letter between MM/DD/YYYY and MM/DD/YYYY from the insurance company on their letterhead showing proof of six months of continuous insurance coverage without any lapses. NO ID CARDS ACCEPTED."

I was told that the insurance company would have to write a letter, with a couple sentences indicating as such but the company (AAA) said they won't do it. Does anyone else have experience with this? TX by the way

Buying my first car and need help

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 12:19 PM PST

I'm 20 and buying my first car which is gonna be a 1991 jeep Cherokee. I've had one speeding ticket like 3 years ago and a year ago I was in a car accident when borrowing her car. I've had my license since I was 18 but don't really drive since I don't have a car and borrow my moms like once a week if I'm running late to school. When I apply for car insurance I have to report that accident right? Even though the insurance was only in my moms name and not mine. Side note: the insurance company covered the accident because they knew I was borrowing the car from my mom and not a regular driver.

Buying a car without car insurance.

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 10:11 AM PST

Hi all - I tried searching this question but didn't find an answer to my situation so hopefully someone can help out. I've owned cars and had car insurance before, but dropped my coverage when I moved abroad. When I came back I moved to an area where I didn't need a car so I've been without coverage for a few years.

I'm going to buy a used car in the next 1-2 months. Most likely a private seller, but I don't have a specific car in mind. I'm waiting for a good deal to pop up so I can jump on it immediately.

Whatever car I look at I'll want to test drive and then be able to buy and drive it home. When I go online to check insurance rates they all require me to fill in car make/model/year and to get a policy, require a VIN.

Is it possible to get a policy without that information? Can I be insured for a general "used SUV" and then after buying call my insurance company and input the exact car information? Would doing this affect my rates? Does it matter if I buy the car in my state or a neighboring one?

    Thanks!

New Jersey P&C State Exam Help

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 10:03 AM PST

    Good afternoon,

I recently took the NJ P&C course through Kaplan University, passed the final exam, and I am now looking to take the state exam to become licensed, but I am having trouble with what steps I need to take/which exams I need to take.

The state exam is given by PSI Exams, though for NJ they list three exams: NJ Casualty Producer, NJ Property Producer and NJ Instructor Property and Casualty. I assume I would have to take the 2 former exams separately, though I wanted to ask on here if that is normal and/or correct? Is it normal that I would have to take the Casualty and Property exam separately?

I have contacted both Kaplan and PSI Exams to advise on which exam I would have to take, but both companies advised to ask the other as they noted the other would know which test I would have to take.

I guess I am just looking for some feedback from someone who has taken the NJ state licensing exam through PSI Exams. Did you have to take 2 separate exams? Was there anything you needed to do/bring with you before taking the exam? Kaplan advised I simply need to bring my certificate of completion, though I've heard that you needed some code, as well from others that have taken the test in the past?

Any feedback would be much appreciated!

Why does my car insurance for one of my car costs more than my other car?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 06:05 AM PST

I have 2 cars, one of them is first generation, and the other is second generation. They are fairly common cars, you see one approximately every 15-30 cars on the freeway. They are both insured by the same company. They both have same annual mileage. I have years of no accidents and super clean driving record of nothing. Live in a safe neighborhood. Never made a claim.

Why is the insurance for my first generation car is more expensive than my newer second generation car? The older car I pay nearly $200 more annually than the newer car. The older car has less market value than the newer car. The older car is 15 years old and the newer car is 10 years old. Both have same identical coverage policy. This is Nationwide insurance if that helps.
