As an employer, do I restore sick hours to an employee if they quit and return to work 6 months later?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 02:39 PM PST

    California, Burlingame

Their FAQ says "The paid sick leave law does not require that your accrued sick leave be restored to you" but only for "What happens if I return to work for the same employer after more than one year?"

I don't see anything regarding less than a year.

    https://www.dir.ca.gov/DLSE/Paid_Sick_Leave.htm

edit: I was on hold with california govt website for 30 minutes before they just made me leave a voicemail and hung up so yeah. annoying.

How do you handle your business copywriting? Or, where do you look for a quality copywriter?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 03:32 AM PST

    Hello!

I'm a small business owner with a focus on conversion copywriting for small businesses and entrepreneurs who have outgrown DIY, and I'm looking for better ways to market myself! As a copywriter, I've had great luck finding clients on Reddit and LinkedIn or through people I know. BUT, I know I could do better. Small businesses and entrepreneurs are my favorite clients to work with, so I have some questions for this community.

What do you look for in a copywriter?

Where do you look for a copywriter?

What made (or would make) you decide to outsource your copywriting instead of doing it yourself?

What do you expect from working with a copywriter?

    Thanks for your time! Nicole

Family friend just quit partnership to become direct competition... now what?!

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 03:57 PM PST

    Hola!

So, my 2 sisters partnered with a loved family friend to create an education agency that takes students to Australia.

He is a talented businessman, my oldest sister has plenty of expertise in Australian immigration law and student process, my youngest sister is the creative mind behind marketing and communications. Literally the dream team.

My oldest sister that lives in Sydney has been working for years with students and workers that want temporal jobs and education in Australia. She also became a licensed immigration counselor. She has been training the other 2 partners for months on exchange education, work and immigration law.

They finally started to prepare the company and during the logo design it was evident that he wanted to lead the team despite his complete lack of knowledge in design or brand identity. He just bailed today and announced that he will create his own educational agency and said it was not personal but that he wanted more of his essence in the company. He will become the direct competitor for the market.

Until now nothing has been in paper. My sisters accept it was dumbed but fully trusted him as a close family friend. Both companies would exist in the same city.

Anybody has any advice? He wants to keep the friendship, but how??! Most likely there is no legal action possible since nothing was on paper.

    What LLC business fails?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 02:48 PM PST

What happens if you form an LLC, get business loans, start up the company, and it ends up failing? Obviously you're still on the hook for the business loans, right? What are your options from there? Do you declare bankruptcy? And if so, does that affect your personal credit/finances? Thanks.

College student torn on continuing family business

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 09:41 AM PST

I am currently a senior in college studying economics and business administration and I have been exploring different jobs within the realm of possibility for my credentials. I have had my fair share of interviews and I am still interviewing at many different kinds of firms from Bloomberg to startups in California, however I keep coming to the conclusion that I want to be my own boss.

My father owns a successful masonry/contracting business that I been contributing to for about 5 years now, however I was not very interested when I was just a laborer. I have done some backend marketing and SEO work for the business, as well as taken care of some accounting. These are things I have been more interested in than just raw masonry.

After almost 4 years in college I see this company as very scaleable and possible a source for good and better income than it already is.

I guess I am looking for someone who broke into a field they didn't really study in college, just based on the idea of seeing a scaleable opportunity.

    Mobile eftpos machine? (Australia based)

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 03:12 AM PST

I'll be setting up a stall in a couple weeks time to sell some prints for a small business of mine. At the moment the only way customers can pay for my product is via my website or through cash, neither of which is really a very feasible option when you are selling goods basically in a market environment.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Are there any good low-fee mobile eftpos machines out there that would be worth looking into?

    Thanks in advance :)

Am I being a control freak over our marketing?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 02:17 AM PST

A few months ago my family brought a struggling food business. We have all worked extremely hard to get it back up to standard and have spent a lot of time promoting the business as the previous owner pretty much destroyed the shops reputation.

A few weeks ago the local newspaper contacted us and offered us a deal for an advert, a picture and a small editorial. Great !

Not great. Our advert was terrible, grammatically terrible. The word pie was spelt incorrectly for starters, our address was wrong and there was random punctuation after every other word. Maybe he was having a bad day?

Then came the editorial received a rushed 4 minute phone call and then the editorial in which all names were spelt wrong , stuff was made up, sentence structure was poor and half the editorial was spent giving facts about the previous owner ( including an assumption about his heritage /race) inappropriate ? Very! I sent it back again with some amendments and again wasn't happy with the results.

So I've withdrawn , I admit I don't have masses of experience of these kinds of situations. Am I being an arsehole for not trusting them to do their job? Has anyone else had experience working with local press? Am I expecting too much for someone to care as much about the business as I do?

TLDR: local newspaper can't use spell check, am I being a control freak?

    Marketing/PR Advice Needed

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 09:35 PM PST

(If there's a better subreddit better suited for this, please let me know. Just seeking advice).

So I need some PR or marketing advice...

My small biz has a product on something happening soon with some reality TV people (signed NDA so can't do details just yet). We have no idea if it will help with sales, but the press kit we received said we should milk the publicity for everything we can, saying basically we're endorsed by this person, can use specific images and phrases, etc.

My question: Should I hire a PR person/agency? Should I just start pitching places big and small? Should I stop typing? Any advice appreciated! I think I can discuss details in 5 days...if you have suggestions for people who might help (I'll pay), let me know. Thanks!

To atm, or not to atm...

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 01:51 PM PST

I own an arcade ,where the average ticket is under 10 dollars, a lot of people use their credit cards to buy snacks and drinks for less than 3 dollars. This ends up costing a bit, on service charges.

I was thinking of canceling our credit card processing service, and buying an atm and collecting fees, instead of coughing up dough every month.

Does anybody have advice on this matter?

    Bonsai Trees!

Does anybody have experience in used car dealing?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 07:35 AM PST

A brief plan for my idea (I would also like ypur opinion if it's viable)

I will be legally allowed to drive later this year by Irish law and I plan on buying a car for myself immediately (BMW Z3 1999-2001) and soon after buying another car to soon after sell. I will try to buy this car below it's normal price through bargaining, or auctions. I plan on selling this car soon after for small profit and repeating. I am of course prepared to lose money in the beginning but I'd imagine this shall stabilize with experience. When I get a car with a more significant price sold I will buy 2 (or more) cheaper cars and sell them like how I did in the very beginning. Working up and up eventually.

Would I be better off just starting with an official business and if not at what point do I make it official?

Should I keep it to online sales or at what point should I buy a lot? Will I have to employ if I own a lot? Any advice in general would be extremely helpful, Thank you in advance.

Extra info: -I will be based in the capital and I have considered that I will ship nationwide for my cars by delivering them myself in free time. (Will add more as I think of it)

What makes me a successful business man from a Hobo?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 11:22 PM PST

Today I am gonna share my business experience with you. and also welcome to leave your message to discuss what have made you successful.

Iam 30 and used to be a hobo. I have never thought that i can own what i already have today. But I make it! I have my own business and can make more than $50,000 monthly and my team is of over 50 members. I am so greatful for the business chance that I have grasped. One year ago , I couldn't even find a good job because of my low education degree. I started to find some business with less cash requirements in the huge networld. Then Ifound a genius product named "No Pen Mural". I was so excited, it's a global pioneer home decoration product. With it , people don't need any painting skills but can decorate their home by themselves in 2 hours . You can decorate your home in any style you want. The most amazing thing is that the children can also decorate their home alone . You can imagine that how proud it should be when the kids finished the art wall painting and show it to their friends and classmates. I knew that it is exactly what i am looking for. It happens that there isn't much investment requirement ,With only $2k for the first product purchse , I can be their international distributor ans start selling this product in my city. Of course , before i make up my mind , I applied for a free sample. It was really amazing , I can't believe that i have drawn such a gorgeous art wall painting without any painting skills. It was so pretty and easy . I knew that it will definitely the new trend of home decoration. Now , I have been a distributor of No Pen Mural for almost one year. And it is so popular here, especially among the family with children. The next step , I am going to open the online store to expand my business further.

I have a small business on mind

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 07:28 PM PST

Hi I am a college student in the States. I am from somewhere else but here for studying and there are at least 100k students from my country here in USA. Our country is rich and people are well financially relaxed. Government is well respected and liked. Most students here own cars. I would say 20% of all car owners have the president of the country pic on their car as a decal. Other have the country's map as a decal. Others have the country's logo as a decal . And I THINK most of them got these stickers from back home because they are more available there than here because here they have to custom make them which is pain in the pocket relatively. And they are pretty lazy to do a custom one.

The business idea is to custom do them in China and have them sent to here and selling them on Amazon FBA for $12 a decal or something around that. Plus there are many places to advertise for free! There are many social media accounts for us students from my country. Plus people are pretty social and they will definitely share the information along each other. I am starting with a budget of $200-$300 per 1000 sticker which will eventually cost me less than a dollar including shipping per sticker. Amazon fees $3 at most per item including amazon shipping to customers I will be making %600 of the product cost.
What do you guys think? I do not care for the initial investment cost to be honest. I am more concerned about the time and effort involved. I am a full time engineering student.

Is it viable to start a yogurt company?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 01:16 PM PST

    Hello,

I've been making Icelandic-style yogurt, called skyr, for the past few years on my own in my free time. It tastes ridiculously good, and I've been thinking about setting up my own production facility to make it on larger scale.

I'm an engineer by trade and I don't have the slightest clue about product viability in the food industry.

Do you guys happen to know any good books/podcasts/resources for this kind of situation? Would I have a chance at having my product sold at Whole Foods or any one of those specialty food stores?

How to handle projections for product and revenue when working with a larger supplier?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 05:36 PM PST

Maybe this thread could help some others as well, but I was asked to provide some projections from a supplier who noticed we were putting in more proposals than other companies in my region- they're asking for a formal proposal on how I can help them from a partnership perspective- but to also provide increase of product numbers / revenue with yearly projections.

Right now I have hit a stumbling block of what I should include for revenue and product projections over a 3 year span, as we have put in for a lot of samples and prototypes from this company, but my product takes a few months to confirm a final order and many prototypes are still in Q/C.

The owner mentioned they would like to go from a few hundred thousand units processed to a Million plus in the next year- My company can definitely assist with that number and do well beyond, but I'm having trouble how to show that in terms of projections.

Any help would be appreciated. We would be able to get in a great position with this company's backing, and I'm just trying to get a great idea of how to show projected numbers based on our involvement under their umbrella. Thanks for reading and for any input in advance.

    Flower Shoppe

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 09:07 AM PST

I have been looking into starting a flower shop. It's been in my head for years now and now that I'm done having babies I think it's time for me to start focusing on what I'm doing as an individual. I downloaded an ebook on how to get started and I'm just now starting to compile information on what I will need, how much it will cost to get started, and how much I have to sell not just to break even, but to make a decent profit to make my time worthwhile. Does anyone with a small shop have any advice for me as I get this ball rolling?

Traffic on your website/store and how you achieve it?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 03:01 PM PST

Hello there everyone! I have recently created a website for myself (im a digital illustrator that wants to sell his products such as: framed custom illustrations, book illustrations etc)... I am good at creating things buy I honestly suck at marketing, i don't know how to drive traffic on my website (i just made a few blog posts tho), i do use instagram / YouTube / facebook but i do not know how to actually get people look at my stuff or interact with them.

I also do not have a huge budget to run ads in order to grow an audience so i can drive it to my website so...what are you guys using for traffic and engaging with people? What are some methods you're using? Any advice is gold for me! Much love!
