I know Becker doesn't focus on it at all but I just got royally screwed by three pension simulations and a bunch of MC on it. I don't know if the other study programs use it but find a way

    New NASBA Gateway Signup Tips

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 06:53 PM PST

When signing up for the new NASBA Gateway 1) the Jurisdiction Code is just your state abbreviation. 2)The jurisdiction candidate ID can be found in the email they sent out recently, if you didn't get this you can find it in the top right corner of CPA Central, it will probably have a 0 preceding it. Delete this 0. 3) myscores.nasba.org gets you to the new website to signup.

How impressive is my dad's accomplishment?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 09:04 PM PST

My dad often tells the story about how despite not having any accounting classes for a long time, like 10 years (I think this was his degree but I'm not sure) and was in school for music he studied for the CPA exam for a month and passed it on the first try (in the 80s i think) This is all gibberish to me, I'm about to be 17, but he considers this his crowning accomplishment because of all the people that told him there was no way it could be done with his background. He has his cert displayed proudly despite him never using it (he doesn't like desk jobs so he's a freelance insurance agent). My mom, who divorced him, always warns me to take what he says with a grain of salt since he often exaggerates how cool something he did is. I'm not sure what to think about this, he talks about it pretty often.

KPMG - Junior Accountant - Accountancy test

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 07:24 AM PST

    Hi all,

so I will soon finish my graduate position in a trust as a public accountant and landed an interview with KPMG for a junior accountant position. They told me that the interview process will involve an accountancy test.

Does someone have an idea what I should expect? I just want to give it my best shot in any case. If it is relevant to any extent, the KPMG in question is the Luxembourg branch.

Thank you for any suggestions / examples!

How effective is reading for the CPA exam?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 11:11 AM PST

So I purchased Roger CPA. Have the videos, books, notecards, and IPQ. I like the videos but I believe I may be learning better/more from reading. I like how he summarizes things but now I feel a bit of buyer's remorse. I know that the MCQ and TBS are key to passing the exam but you have to obtain some foundational knowledge prior to performing well, right?

Anyone have better experiences reading than watching the lectures? What purpose do the lectures pose?

JD looking to transition into Audit or Tax

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 05:59 PM PST

I have a friend that is has a JD and LLM, but is looking to transition into Audit or Tax for a public accounting firm. He previously did internal audit for a private Healthcare company but he's more interested in pursuing Tax.

While researching how to transition, we've seen requirements that seem conflicting for some roles. Some want a degree in accounting, some don't care as long as you have a CPA, some don't even care if you have a CPA, as long as you have your JD and tax experience.

He does not have a degree in accounting, but has taken some masters level courses in accounting. The question is what is the best approach to this transition? I was of the opinion that he should just go for his EA (since they don't have the education requirements as the CPA) and then just start applying to firms, but he disagrees.

    What are your thoughts?

    Thanks for your time!

    How important are Pre-Interview Socials?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 03:30 PM PST

Currently recruiting for SLP. I have a Pre-Interview Social for one of the big4 and a Disney's rotational internship Recruitment On-Site Event both on the same day and around the same time.

Haven't had much chance to network with the big4 professionals. Just wanted to know how important are the pre-interview socials. Which do you recommend I should attend? I really want to go to both but that's not possible. I know that Disney have a semi SLP during the summer as well but unsure on whether I'll be accepted considering that I'm graduating Dec.2019. Thanks in advance!

[CAN] CPA Practical Experience requirements in the States?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 04:51 PM PST

I was wondering if anyone is aware of the process of gaining practical experience for the CPA in the USA. Does it qualify? I've already passed the CFE. Still need a few months of experience to be fully designated. I was thinking perhaps the Experience Verification Route (vs. the Pre-Approved Route) would allow to gain experience outside of Canada. Thoughts?

    CGMA designation in the US

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 03:00 PM PST

I'm from the UK and going into strategic level of CIMA. I'm also getting married later this year to my fiancée from the US. We will be living in the UK for a few years while I finish my studies and gain more experience.

In the future, moving to the US will be a possibility. However I'm worried that I will be overlooked by many employers, particularly as I never went to uni, but also because CPAs seem to be sought after more than CMAs, CIAs etc (at least that's what I hear).

So I'm wondering, does the CGMA hold much weight in US (with no degree but 5-10 years experience)? But also would it be worth doing a masters top up so that I can say I have a degree when I move there?

Even though I might not be moving for a few years, I'm starting to think about this now because if I do decide to do the degree I'd rather do it straight away - get all my education done in one go. Thanks for any advice / thoughts!

What are some things you should know how to do when you are going to intern/work in a firm?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 08:08 PM PST

I see a lot of resources telling me how to do things on excel however I dont really know what I should be able to do by the time i begin applying for internships or by the time i start working for a firm. Does anyone have a good list of what they wish they knew how to do in excel or someone who currently works and knows what interns or new hires should know by the time they come into the company?
