    Posted: 11 Jun 2017 10:02 AM PDT

For those investing and holding stocks and ETFs long term, what are some investments you are making if you are anticipating a major market correction that would hedge against the losses caused by a bear market?

Edit: Thank you all for these thorough responses!

We do not want a quick recovery

    Posted: 09 Feb 2018 06:38 AM PST

By definition, a correction is a fix for something that is wrong. If we get a quick run up back to last week's levels.... that is not a correction. Let's hope for slow and steady progress in the coming months

Is anyone else who sold their stocks at the beginning of the correction salivating at the opportunity to buy at these prices?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2018 08:59 AM PST

For reference sold $BABA, $JD, $MU, $KEM, $BSX, $EBAY, plus a few others I had a smaller position in.....For a lot of these the prices are below the December tech rotation/correction.

I found this very peculiar but, I'm noob. If redditors think that it isn't so peculiar, I would like to hear a reason for such high similarities. They are acting identical, it's impossible! :)

Should we lock in losses to save huge on taxes and buy another stock?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2018 10:47 AM PST

If I sold now I would take a huge loss on the stock but actually still be even -/+ 0% loss because of other gains since the start of january. However, I'd still have to pay a few bucks in taxes.

Should I sell my favorite stock to offset the tax gains on my other stocks and just start from scratch? Would the negative loss roll over?

My portfolio is crying but I’m not worried

    Posted: 09 Feb 2018 10:10 AM PST

Our 8 year bull market is sadly coming to an end...

For those of you that are thinking about pulling out of the market, DON'T. This is your time to buy more. As Buffet says "be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful".

Here's an optimistic FACT: if you stayed invested in the S&P 500 index fund between 1993 and 2013 without pulling out, you would've netted a 483% return.

Stocks can only fall to $0 but they can rise to an indefinite amount. Staying invested through good times and bad will secure returns. Happy investing!

Really Interesting Post About UVXY I Read On Tradingview. ETP's WIll Exacerbate Volatility In A Stock Market Crash

    Posted: 09 Feb 2018 09:16 AM PST

    https://www.tradingview.com/chart/UVXY/dRKgVzTx-VIX-ETPs-The-Ticking-Time-Bomb-That-Could-Unleash-Volatility/

The OP is saying that ETP's like UVXY will cause short term VIX futures to become oversubscribed, or undersubscibed in times of extreme volatility. I didn't write this

EDIT: Who knows, these things could be like portfolio insurance 2.0

    ATVI

    Posted: 09 Feb 2018 06:57 AM PST

This is the third quarter in a row that ATVI crushes earnings and doesn't move (even went down 2Q's ago). Held this stock for 7 months and barely moved. Any good idea how to play this stock? It seems to go up and down randomly and I just want it to be back to the 70's level so I can sell it.

    Best way to diversify portfolio?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2018 08:26 AM PST

First time investor here. I am thinking of place $5k into stocks, but definitely want to diversify the portfolio.

I was thinking putting some in tech (AAPL, NVDAM MSFT), finance (V, BAC), electronics (NTDOY, SNE) and medical (CUTR, any others?)

Is there a certain % recommended for each sector?

    Any tips? Thank you!

It feels like Xmas with all this red n green on my portfolio

    Posted: 09 Feb 2018 01:39 PM PST

I think the market is stabilizing. Maybe a few more percentage points to lose. But I'm seeing more green than I have in what seems like months(but really only a week).

Pick your targets but I would stay away from the higher priced valuations as they might drop some more.

I do think the worst is over. Retail investors are panicked and staying on sidelines. Good. Let me buy some discounted stock

How to check how much money is flowing in/out US stock market?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2018 07:14 AM PST

So I'm a newbie trying to understand what's happening. Instead of stock price I want to see if the movement is big or small. I know tiny about VIXY, my understanding is the volatility is a combine of in and out? But I want to see the net. I can be super wrong if so please correct me.

This stock-market shakeout looks a lot like 1996-97

    Posted: 09 Feb 2018 12:44 PM PST

I know a lot of people are freaking out right now especially those who are going through their first correction. If you are a buy and hold investor this is not the time to sell your fundamentally sound investments. At times like this a Dollar Cost Averaging Strategy (placing a fixed dollar amount into the market on a regular basis) maybe your best bet. In March 1996 through March 1997 if you stayed out of the market waiting for it go back up you would have lost an opportunity for big gains.

    P-A-N-I-C

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 03:54 PM PST

After the next 600 point drop half of all of the last year's gains will be gone! Lock in your current losses now!! Preferably with 3X leveraged Bear ETFs!!!

Seriously though, I don't know if this is the start of a down-cycle, or just be some uncertainty over a blazing-hot market, but I cashed out on Monday (I'm up 30% for the year, so can't complain) into something a little more stable for a while ... just to see what is happening here.

Note: Do not take the advice above, instead go here.

Second Note: If you have any down-cycle resistant stocks rec., give them up!

Third Note: Now there is a govt. shutdown ... so buckle up buckaroos!

Is hedging AC-T with WJA-T smart? Is it even hedging?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2018 12:29 PM PST

I currently hold Air Canada (AC-TO). The reason I'm looking at WJA is to hedge (I think that is the right term) my one Canadian Airline with its biggest competitor. AC has approx 1,500 daily departures, and WJA approximately 400. All other Canadian airlines combined don't even have 100. These two positions will essentially give me exposure to the entire Canadian Airline industry.

AC has a p/e of around 3, but forecasted to increase to a more reasonable 8. WJA is at a 9 forcasted to remain about the same. Industry average is around 4 but that's inflated with AC having the majority of the market cap, and a clearly lower than it should be P/E.

AC has a p/b ratio of 2 which is approximately the industry average, while WJA is at a p/b of 1.2.

Fundamentally, ignoring industry averages, WestJet has a great P/E and a great P/B. Furthermore, the industry averages are currently skewed by ACs great performance, and will be much closer to WestJet going forward.

Considering AC is a staple in my portfolio, is buying WJA the right thing to do? All indicators in my mind point to yes, but the analysts aren't so hot.

    Jim Rogers

    Posted: 09 Feb 2018 11:54 AM PST

The guy is calling the worst stock market crash is coming. When doesn't he say the worst is about to happen. I kind of liked him before, but now he's just annoying. Hell...i call a crash will happen in the future. Why don't you interview me instead of wasting everyone time. Yes Jim, there will be a crash. But when you call for it 10 times a year you will bound to be right one of these times. Sorry this is just a rant about the same article rewritten and posted every 4 months.

    Starting an ira now?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2018 11:44 AM PST

Is this a dumb idea. I have a few stocks at the moment but I haven't opened an ira account yet. I'm thinking this year is the year (don't want to wait too long). However I don't know if all this volatility is a good or bad time to start a retirement account. Should I wait for it to calm down or does it even matter. Thanks
