Newbie startup. How should we spend our first $1500? Posted: 06 Feb 2018 07:41 PM PST Hi all, my student team was recently chosen to compete in a venture competition. We are currently three engineers building an app. We plan to make use of free tools as we start talking to customers and building our app, but we want to be sure we are maximizing our available resources as much as possible. The group that sponsors the competition provides a $1500 stipend. This is not much money to go on, so we are at a bit of a loss as to what to spend it on. Does anyone here have any recommendations, or know of good resources on the subject? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated! As I said, we're engineers. Until we get a business and finance person on our team we're at a loss. [link] [comments] |
undergrad with one summer to spare... How should I best prepare myself for building tech startups? Posted: 06 Feb 2018 08:47 PM PST I'm a cs major from a top computer science school. I am a talented software engineer that has shipped code at multiple top-n tech companies, and I am confident about my programming abilities. I am going to graduate school because I am interested in getting a deeper understanding of certain CS subfields (for both intellectual and entrepreneurial purposes) and intend on using the time to develop ideas and make connections with people. With that being said, I am not looking to get a summer internship this summer, but instead want to spend the time on something that will help prepare me for the future. I don't want to just "start a startup". I want to build my fundamentals, either in 'soft skills' or engineering, that will help get me there in the future. I've been thinking of applying for positions at VC firms, but I'm mostly at a loss about what to do in order to best invest this summer. Does anyone have any advice on how to best spend a 3-month period of time to prepare for success? [link] [comments] |
Networking, with nothing to give Posted: 06 Feb 2018 03:32 PM PST Hello r/startups Over the last few months I've been getting to know the startup community in my city. I love the people and the companies, and I would love to get out and network more, but I feel as though I've been taking with nothing to give. Example: I met a great individual, and he has been putting me on to great opportunities to get me further in the community. The thing is, as I am just building my network, I don't have much to give back. I am a developer, so while my skills are in demand, I still feel as though I'm asking for a job/opportunity to show my skills. So, asking for all the people in my situation: What steps should I take to prevent myself from being a "vampire" just taking value without giving any in return? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Feb 2018 02:04 AM PST https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1ByLn5Xy3BpTqAMS8ZpDILiuYCPNOr1Z-h0ygZlYMHWI/edit Many inefficient and repetitive jobs like converting PSD to HTML, are still a waste of time for programmers even in 2018. They normally spend 2 to 3 days for this converting jobs and it costs $800 per one product. We thought that if we can deliver this product with 50% price, it would be very efficient service for software companies. We want to get your opinion about this service and would love your participation on this survey. [link] [comments] |
Startup Failure - How should I leverage this to start my next adventure? Posted: 06 Feb 2018 02:36 AM PST After 4 years of blood, sweat and mistakes I made the decision to shutdown the company. The circumstances suck and it has been a big surprise (I found out Jan. 16 we lost 2 big deals, we decided we had to close Feb. 2). I have never daydreamed about another job, I loved this job. Please share your thoughts on what I should be thinking about and asking myself while looking for my next adventure. I must make a decision somewhat quick as the main breadwinner, we work with a lot of corporates today so I might get offers from them, Paris has a robust startup eco-system so I may be able to work for another startup or should I freelance for 6 months and figure it all out? Please share your recommendations and thoughts!

How Can I Explain Equity Allocation Posted: 06 Feb 2018 12:48 PM PST I'm in the process of starting a brewpub, with total funding requirements (startup + 1 yr expenses) of $500k (not actual numbers here for privacy reasons). My business partner and I are putting in around $200k. Two personal contacts have agreed to put in the remaining $300k, for which I offered a pretty generous 40% (that decreases to 30% at a certain milestone - they are looking for early failure protection). The 40% is calculated from a crude average of several methods - business cash flow & asset NPV, PE ratio, and NPV of investor cash returns. However, one of the investors is insisting that since they a funding 60% of the business, they should also OWN 60%. Um... no, that's not how it works. This hasn't been an issue in the several months that we have been working on the deal, so why I you all of the sudden bumping the share number up in the 11th hour? /rant I want to explain to him that you aren't going to get that full amount because a) you won't be working there 70 hours a week, b) assuming we are successful your returns will be much higher (valuation was based on 60% annual returns), and c) he's valuating the business at exactly it's investment value (as though I'm not going to make a single dollar after year one). However I don't want to estrange him for obvious reasons. So how should I approach this situation? Edit for context: he's not a VC, but has been the founding CEO of two multi-billion startups (in a different industry) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Feb 2018 06:55 AM PST I have idea for a 'smart' product aimed at a particular (very large) community. I'm fairly certain it can attract media attention via novelty factor alone. In terms of complexity, think physical object with ARM embedded CPU, bunch of pressure sensors and simple display. My question is:
Any personal experience, stories, comments welcome. :) [link] [comments] |
How can I brand personal projects ? Posted: 06 Feb 2018 02:40 PM PST I started looking for a job recently. One of the things I learnt from this subreddit is working on open source projects and sharing with the community matters a lot. I would like to know the best way to brand personal projects. While I do freelance occasionally building some projects. Should I brand it under a personal blog (I don't have one yet), or under an online startup. Showing personal projects under the person's name can show motivations, and putting personal projects under a -online startup- can show ability to take these personal projects further. If you are a manager, engineering lead, how do you see it ? would u please share some of your thoughts ? [link] [comments] |
Ideas to put together a design sprint team to validate a bootstrapped project? Posted: 06 Feb 2018 12:51 PM PST Basically, I'm working on a side-project and would like to validate it (or even get some pointers) first before developing anything. However, it's a bootstrapped project, I'm not a big corporation or VC-backed startup to pick brains inside the company or hire a consultancy such as AJ&Smart. How do I bring these people together? Some I know, for the others how would I persuade then to block a week of their time? Offering shares (of something that doesn't exist)? Ideas and insights are greatly appreciated! Thanks heaps! I am offered either stock options or a fraction of partnership. Which one should I take? Posted: 06 Feb 2018 12:32 PM PST I have been invited to contribute to a startup in Europe (I am European) which already had a round of investments and looks like it has a promising future. I like the project and I would be interested in contributing to it. I know the founders and currently I work as a freelancer and I am doing some work for them (app and backend side). They proposed me to get more involved in the project by "investing" few working days a month in exchange of either:
They say that the 2 options are rather similar but the first one involves less legal obligations (no need to go through the notary etc...) so they suggest to go with that one. I'm thinking to invest 4 working days a month for a year (=48 working days) and get paid for the rest but I'm not sure which option I should take because I have little idea about what are the pros/cons about these choices. Anybody could please give some insight and perhaps give their view on why one option could be better than the other? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Test for hiring a junior marketing content writer Posted: 06 Feb 2018 09:09 AM PST Hey guys, does anybody know of any good test templates that can be applied for hiring a junior content writer? Even a guide would help. I could not find anything very useful on Google. We don't have senior marketing people on my team, we only have technical marketers and designers. I do understand that the best way is to apply a test focused on my company problems (like rewriting a section on the website, creating a small article, or creating an email campaign). But I was wondering if anybody knows a good source that I can use as a reference? or templates ? We are a medium sized tech company and we don't typically do briefs, we operate more in startup mode. However, we don't work on B2C, so without any brief it would be hard for the person to have context and goals [link] [comments] |
What can I offer to outrun my competitors on the file sharing market? Posted: 06 Feb 2018 04:41 AM PST Just launched my file sharing startup and what can you advise me to outrun Mega, Mediafire, Wetransfer etc.? What must be the "king-offer" to users that will turn them into my customers? Something like "unlimited cloud storage" doesn't work since people don't trust to such offers... I already tried that and I think it's not what really users need. Extra space is a good additional thing, but users decide to use file sharing service because of some other things. What things? Maybe you see the demand on some kind of features? I am ready to invest up to $50K in developing some really cool file sharing service, so you can take it into account, when you give an advise. How do you keep track of customers? Posted: 06 Feb 2018 07:54 AM PST I'm working in this startup where we have around 100 sales per day and sometimes people contact us to track their order and whatnot, I'm looking for a simple software to keep track on a customer's order through their account, hopefully one with phone recognition so the account pops up automatically. The ones that I've found are too complex since it's to keep track of leads and follow-ups to make a sale and I just need a simpler solution of a software to keep track of accounts with some data we can use for marketing. On that page any info on how to write lineaments for customer care would be great. Tbh I just started and I have no idea what I'm doing so any suggestions would help. [link] [comments] |
Starting/Rebranding a small Digital Marketing Agency Posted: 06 Feb 2018 07:02 AM PST In the next 3-6 months, we will be starting a new digital marketing services agency; essentially a branch-out of another company that focuses on other services. The web development team that have been maintaining most of the accounts will be leaving soon, so I will have to start recruiting and build a new team from scratch. Essentially, the services we are planning to provide initially are: - Website Development and Maintenance - SEO Optimization - Social Media Marketing - Progressive Web Apps Development - Content Creation (Photo, Video editing and Production - later plans) So my thoughts and questions are: 1) What kinds of people will I need to hire for the initial launch? 2) Web Developers/IT savvy folks, what are your expectations from a startup/company in terms of benefits, daily tasks? 3) Any other value-added services I can add to the list? All thoughts and feedback are welcome :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Feb 2018 05:16 AM PST Anyone know how to get jobs when you're fresh? And anyone know, in Ontario is bidding war mandatory? Or is it possible for the plumber to give a job to a specific company? More context: builder gives plumbing contract to a plumber, not sure if through bidding war or not. Then the plumber subcontracts pipe insulation to pipe insulation company, which also does fire-stop, so im wondering where bidding wars are involved, cause back in the day i heard bidding war is required by the law. Any ingo would be great. Im working under one of the biggest pipe insulation companies in GTA, but i dont want to work hourly for the rest of my life. My plan was to open up a company, take one job at a time and work only my self. I hope this is the right subreddit for this. Im really desperate to start living cause right now i feel like im standing still. [link] [comments] |
