Posted: 06 Feb 2018 07:00 PM PST Finally passed. After a bitter 74 on BEC on a 1 week hail mary... Got the 85 now and finished all 4 exams. Wish I had done this several years earlier in my career, but it feels good to be done. The podcast shall return... And probably be much more interesting because I have boomeranged back to B4 for the time being as well. Tonight, I am getting shit faced. That is all fam. [link] [comments]

Another morning when start working in the office with bad mood Posted: 06 Feb 2018 04:51 PM PST Feels like my office has no accountability, it's always the associates wiping the ass of seniors. My senior told me "are you ready to submit the adjustment of xxx excel table?". Jesus the last time you asked that file from me was two weeks ago you never mentioned you want me to make certain adjustment ever since. You only asked me to get an update from the client and feedback to you. You can't assume as a first year associate I know everything and do things automatically. I know I can't blame him though. We don't have a memo for first years regarding "things you need to know or be aware as first year". Of course I will complete the work before deadline again but I just hate seeing the smirky smiling faces of managers and some seniors. PS When one day I become a manager I will hold myself accountable. Screw this irresponsible working ethic of my firm. [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Feb 2018 08:56 PM PST Is busy season in a public accounting firm just inherently supposed to be an unrelenting shitshow no matter what? Regardless the initiatives that are tested and pushed each year to improve it, it still ends up a bloody mess that everyone just does their best to keep their nose above water. Then it's finally somewhat over and you're just a carcass of a former human-being. Sorry, just needed to say some words somewhere. [link] [comments]
Big 4 Canada Partnership Return Help Posted: 06 Feb 2018 03:57 PM PST I'm currently preparing a T5013 for a law firm for a Senior Associate at Big 4 and am in need of help. I am a second year university intern I have no idea where to start. They told me it would take me around 10 hours to prepare on TaxPrep and it's due tomorrow. I don't mind staying up all night. So far, this is what I gathered:
Since this is a partnership, there are like 400 partners so I need to fill in 400 T5013 forms? Can someone please provide me some insight I'm a little stressed at the moment. [link] [comments]
thoughts on the application of mindfulness training in accounting. Posted: 06 Feb 2018 06:43 PM PST Is it a widely held belief that people should be meditating more? or is this concept still clouded with mysticism and spirituality? Specifically, I wanted to know if the community believes this can improve producitivity. Also, how strong is this belief ? (e.g. do you meditate/have programs at your office, or is it just some fluffy newspaper headline) I just wanted to know where the conversation is currently at for everyone. [link] [comments]
Am I stuck here? Personal Tax - HNW Posted: 06 Feb 2018 07:23 PM PST Hey all, I've been getting stressed about my current job and wondering if you all have any advice on how to get out. I started at a tax firm under a year ago and I liked it at first, but then I realized that I haven't learned a thing about accounting. I'm strictly doing personal tax HNW and I'd like to get into audit and actually learn accounting. I went to a target school, 3.5+ GPA, and went to a smaller firm because I liked their pitch. I don't know what to do and I feel like I doomed myself by taking this job. I figured the earlier I get out the better, but I don't think leaving a job under 1 yr looks good on a resume. So how do I get out of tax and into audit? Pardon the formatting please. [link] [comments]
Are moral standards this extreme in public acccounting? Posted: 06 Feb 2018 07:31 AM PST In my auditing class we have to debate on whether a firms decision to fire a staff accountant was right or not. In the case the accountant lied to a partner when he asked if she was going to take the CPA exam, she said yes but said that she hadn't taken it yet. She actually had taken it and was awaiting the results but lied to save herself from embarrassment in case she failed. When she found out she passed she told the partner and the partner immediately became annoyed with her. The next week all the partners decided to fire her for 'not having professional integrity'. I thought this was extreme but when I asked my group they all said the firm was in the right, which I can argue but dayuuum. To all those in public accounting, is this type of stuff normal?? Internship - Not Getting Valuable Experience Posted: 06 Feb 2018 06:01 PM PST I'm currently in a tax internship not getting great hands-on experience. When employers ask what I did how can I talk up my experience instead of saying "all i did was assemble taxes and scan papers"? I was hoping to get more from this internship but all I'm doing is the work that a jr. high kid could do. It takes no accounting skills and I'm learning very little about tax in general. Posted: 06 Feb 2018 09:35 PM PST I'm struggling with a question on this assignment regarding NFPOs. 1) sound system equipment valued at 200k was donated by XYZ. The equipment will adequately equip the new theatre. If the donation had not been received the club would have to purchase the sound system. Q: how should they account for the donated sound system? Discuss any choices that may be available. 2)ABC family donated 1M in cash for specifically a scholarship fund. The cash received will be invested and managed by a professional investment advisor. Income earned on the endowment fund will be used to provide scholarships of up to 15k for up to 3 students a year starting fiscal 2017. Q: assuming they use the restricted fund method for contributions, explain how the fund for the scholarship should be reported in the year ending June 2016 and in future years when the scholarships disbursed (year end is June 30) My answer for the 1st was deferral method and under unrestricted contributions. I'm not sure on the 2nd one but I think it's recorded as revenue right away? And then expensed? Any help is appreciated. Thank you. [link] [comments]
Can you found out how you did/what you got wrong on each teslet? - Virginia candidate Posted: 06 Feb 2018 08:54 PM PST I am signed up in Virginia. I took my first exam in Jan. Got 72 in BEC. I want to know where to focus next time. But I am not sure how? Please help. [link] [comments]
Resume advice for after busy season Posted: 06 Feb 2018 08:47 PM PST I have secured a contract with a local CPA firm and will be working busy season until mid april. I am not guaranteed a job after busy season, but want to know how to portray my experience so that I can hopefully get hired at another CPA firm or staff accountant. How should I list my experience on a resume if all I am doing is taxes? [link] [comments]
10% medical or 7.5%? *CPA exam* Posted: 06 Feb 2018 10:41 AM PST Hello, I'm confused about the current floor for itemized medical expenses. Becker is saying in excess of 10%, and that is what I see on the IRS website here https://www.irs.gov/individuals/changes-to-itemized-deduction-for-medical-expenses. Edit: The IRS page does say for 2016, but at the bottom it says "This exemption is temporary. Beginning Jan. 1, 2017, the 10 percent threshold will apply to all taxpayers, including those over 65." However, when I look up the current Schedule A, it only shows 7.5%, not 10%. What am I missing here? Most importantly I'm wondering which one would be tested on the exam. Thanks. Australian accounting student with a question about cadetship Posted: 06 Feb 2018 04:20 PM PST Hey accountants of down under, I am struggling with a decision regarding undertaking an accounting cadetship. Basically, there is an opportunity for me to undertake a cadetship at an <$50m revenue firm where I can study part-time and work for two years before flipping to full-time study and part-time work if I choose. Is it worth it? Or should I wait and aim for the likes of Big 4 cadetships (note that they won't be available to start for another two years). Perhaps the experience may set my above others for Big 4 cadetships/summer programs. I would very much appreciate any thoughts on the matter. Oh, also I'm aware of potentially sacrificing "uni-life" and have tried t factor that in to how I'm thinking. [link] [comments]
Is it common for people to struggle in the introductory Accounting course? Posted: 06 Feb 2018 07:55 PM PST This semester I'm taking my first accounting class (accounting 101), I'm only a few weeks in.. but I'm already getting stuck on some of the concepts. I honestly enjoy the subject, and am thinking about majoring in accounting. Is it common for people to struggle so early on? Did you guys with accounting degrees struggle at first or just naturally get it immediately? [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Feb 2018 03:14 PM PST I purchased Rodger's CPA Review Course (18months) back in September, but been pushing off studying like any stupid person. Manned up & finally forced scheduled the FAR exam right before this testing period ends (early March). This definitely helped me get a move on the studying, but it's still SO DARN DIFFICULT. I currently work Part-Time (5-7hrs a day) & spend the rest of the day studying. It's just living hell sitting down and getting through the material...I am trying... Words of encouragement. Advice. Tips. Success stories. Anything. Please. College was a piece of cake compared to this... [link] [comments]

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 06:34 PM PST Hello, Hopefully this post is allowed on the sub. I am looking for some recommendations for headphones to use while studying/office use. I have a few requirements: 1) Wireless - I hate dealing with a cord while trying to write/type 2) No over-the-ear options - I love the quality they deliver but I always get a really bad headset dent in my hair which doesn't look good. 3.) Budget - $100 (student so broke) Side note - I have been searching around amazon for "truly wireless" options, and have tried a knock off of the airpods but they were very large and didn't fit. So these definitely interest me because in the office I will likely only be using one at a time, so not having the cord and the other one dangle is an attractive trait to me. Thanks all. Posted: 06 Feb 2018 10:48 AM PST This may be a strange title, but I'm curious to see what people here think. So a few days ago I had a chat with a certain person from a large accounting firm (top 6) that told me the written feedback on a video interview I did in October. This person did not evaluate me. Basically, the feedback was that the (behavioral) interview went well because I could answer the questions, spoke well, and provided unique examples of things throughout my life. However...I didn't go any further because the interviewer thought the examples weren't pertinent to how I could perform in the role (entry-level audit). I do have some temp work experience, but I never really did anything spectacular. As I was speaking on the phone, I was a bit baffled by this since it essentially violated all the conventional wisdom I had learned about interviewing. First off, there was the fact that an interviewer was making a really, really narrow criticism for a role where I'm expected to know "nothing" before going in; and secondly, it seemed like knowing stuff other than accounting seemed to be a disadvantage. Now this could have been bad luck and I know there are other unspoken factors that influence hiring decisions, but is actually being interested in things other than accounting a negative for the most part when it comes to being evaluated? My whole job hunt as a student has been nothing but frustration but something positive has to happen at some point...I hope. [link] [comments]
[CAN] Looking for accounting firm closer to home. What's it like at BDO/GT/MNP? Posted: 06 Feb 2018 09:25 AM PST Currently work in B4 tax in Toronto and looking to move to another accounting firm to be closer to home. How are the hours and culture at firms like BDO/GT/MNP or other top 10 Canadian firms? FYI, I'm looking to transfer firms with offices around the Burlington, Georgetown and Mississauga area. Do you guys think it is okay to ask for department transfer. Posted: 06 Feb 2018 05:50 PM PST I'm currently an intern at a 1000~ employee company(private). When I got the offer, I didn't realize I'll end up in the department that I'm in. The description of the internship was very broad, so I didn't realize I'll be working with bunch of invoices everyday. This is almost my 3rd month, and I really want to build up my experiences other than just doing ap work. I know for sure that those department is hiring interns right now, and I don't know I could try asking them If I could have a chance for that position. I'm just afraid that I might put bad impression on them trying to get out of the department that I'm in right now. What are your thoughts on this? Is it even worth asking for the position to HR? my manager? [link] [comments] |
