During the storm of this busy season, remember your "why"

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 07:52 PM PST

A little background to this title first: I'm a MAcc student in a pretty rigorous program and have to study and pass a few parts of the CPA exam to be able to get my degree along with taking these ridiculous accounting and IM classes . (I'm sure a lot of universities have tough programs like that, i don't mean to be whining)

My revelation last night: As i was sitting in the library at 9pm, after having been there all day, i was ready to pull my hair out. It was one of those nights that i just wanted to quit so bad and couldn't stop thinking about if this misery of countless hours of studying would ever end. Then i ran across a youtube video by inky johnson, it wasn't my first time hearing him talk but it really hit me at once. My 'Why'.. the reason that i am putting myself through all of this pain and sacrifices to be here and pursue this degree and the CPA. Because at the end of the day, no one has a gun to my head and i can quit at any time i want.

I was born in a third world country and my family was a refugee family at one point. We were pretty poor. And even when we moved to the US later, we struggled a lot at first. I did not have all the things i wanted and i wouldn't ask for it because i knew we could not afford it. That hurt a lot at in my teen years and so i took matters in my own hand and started working at fastfood at 15. (today my family is in a much better state)

BUT the point is i remembered that i never want my children or wife to struggle like i did. i never want my children or wife to not ask for things from me because they don't want to embarrass me because i cant provide for them. I'd feel disgusted with myself if i didnt sacrifice now for the comfort of my loved ones later.

So during this madness and craziness of busy season, remember your 'why'. Remember the ultimate goal, whatever that may be!

    [CAN] Big 4 experienced hires

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 05:14 PM PST

How hard is to get a Big 4 job at the intermediate/senior level in Canada compared to junior/first year? I'm currently working at national firm (BDO/GT/MNP). Also do they still care about GPA once you pass the CFE?

Need some help with this homework problem ... ughh

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 08:38 PM PST

Joey just graduated from college. He plans to purchase a home in 8 years and will need $24000 for a down payment. He starts an investment account with an initial deposit of $3500. If Joey can earn 6% in his investment account on the initial deposit and future deposits, what is the amount of annual payment that Joey must make at the end of each year for 8 years?

This is giving me trouble because of that initial deposit. Had it not said that, I "think" the fv=24000, n=8, & interest=8%... which would make it an ordinary annuity problem. But idk what to do about that initial investment since it's asking me for the annual payments.

    Edit: n=6%

    IFRS / Straight-line rent / Cost / FV

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 05:21 PM PST

Can someone point me to a few resources to help explain the above concepts? I'm really struggling with IAS 40 as it relates to straight line rent (SLR).

Take for example the following scenario. You have the following items in assets according to a trial balance :

    1 Land $100

    2 SLR Receivable $10

    3 Building $150

    4 FMV Adjustment $25

So, on the balance sheet in the financials we show Investment Property at Fair Value (cost $260): $285

Why is SLR receivable considered to be part of the cost basis? What in IAS 16 or 40 says this is correct?

Accounting double major with MIS or IT?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 09:36 PM PST

I am currently in a 5-year college program as a Sophmore with an Accounting major. I am thinking to double major, but am torn between adding an MIS or an IT major.

Reason for decision: It could help meet the CPA requirement should I choose to go down this route; to add some "technological" aspect to my profile; to diversify my career paths

    So my questions now are:

    -What is the difference?

-How was the workload after adding this additional major (in your experience)?

-Do one learn more technical skills than the other? (ie. more coding, using software, etc)

-Does one major hold "more value/advantage" than the other?

Any feedback, pieces of advice, suggestions, and stories are greatly welcomed!

What do you think about compliance jobs?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 09:33 PM PST

I am senior accountant. Will take CPA exams this year eventually. I just want to get paid, however, I don't want to take a job that will stunt my career growth.

Accountants - what do you DO at work?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 03:11 AM PST

I work in tax and do tax returns, prepare accounts, deal with tax issues people come across and help owners do their own bookkeeping.

What does everyone else DO at work?

Mainly trying to see what other sectors do in a day's work and if it would be worth swapping out of tax.

How are my odds or passing FAR?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 08:26 PM PST

I'm taking FAR on Saturday and I just got a 56% on my second Becker Mock exam. I am only able to review 4ish hours a day between now and Saturday.

I've heard the Becker exam score is usually lower than the real thing but Is this too low to still have a chance?

    Help with homework problem?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 07:27 PM PST

I am completely stuck on some of this homework problem and taking it online gives me very little help. :( May you please lend a hand?

I need to compute the following: 1. Number of days' sales in receivables 2. Number of days' sales in inventory 3. Rate earned on total assets 4. Rate earned on common stockholders' equity
    5. Earnings per share on common stock
    6. Price-earnings ratio 7. Dividends per share of common stock 8. Dividend yield

If I could figure out 5, I might could do the rest below it.

I will see how I can upload a SS after submitting this. I would really appreciate the help - my brain is currently broken!

    RevRec or RevWreck?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 05:57 AM PST

Accountants of Reddit, how is the transition over to the FASB's new converged Revenue Recognition rules going? Last I checked, every firm was like "well, we're investigating the impacts and don't know how it will change things yet." That reads to me like it's been a total shitshow for accounting departments...
