The young man who shares my house crashed his car and died yesterday, what do I do now(in NY)?

We've lived together for 4 years. He's technically a 'tenant' but...much more. He was kind of my surrogate son. His only sensible, reliable family is his aunt and uncle. He never talked to any of us about this stuff.

He crashed his car alone. He has auto insurance, axa 403b, and life insurance through his job/nystrs. I don't think alcohol was involved.

I've seen axa stuff in the mail that says life insurance, but we never talked about a policy and I'm not sure if he had one with them or if that's a side addition to his 403b...or what. I told him to put$50-100/paycheck in the 403b, and I think he did that, but he's young and has only been on the job for 3 years.

Well car insurance pay his funeral expenses? In time? Does he get something from the pip? What do I do?

His aunt is trying to make arrangements. I'm trying to navigate the financially and figure out things. I really don't know what to do. Help please.

Temporary auto insurance US - borrowed car and rented car - WA, OR, CO, WY

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 11:46 PM PST

I live overseas and will visit the US in February. During that time I plan to borrow a car for a few days in Washington state and also drive it in Oregon, and to rent a car in Colorado and also drive it in Wyoming. The car in Washington that I plan to borrow was mine before I moved overseas, but I deeded it to someone else and it is currently not being driven and is not insured. I rented a car in Utah last year when I visited the US and the insurance through the rental car company was extremely expensive ($300 for 3 days, I think). So, I'm looking for a policy that will cover the borrowed car (collision is not needed) and the rented car. What are my best options please?

GEICO raised my car insurance over $300/year because I live in California

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 02:00 PM PST

My recent bill shows that GEICO raised my car insurance over $300/year. I've had no accidents, tickets, etc. plus I drive an old car (1991) and receive multiple discounts. When I called to inquire why my insurance has gone up they basically said it's because I live in California and they're passing along their expense to their customers. Anything I can do to try and lower my cost without changing coverage?

Two car accident, one car ends up hitting my building. Both insurers deny fault so won't pay.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 11:37 PM PST

Two cars driving on the street in front of my property collided and car A ends up hitting my building. Both drivers have conflicting stories as to what happened. After 8 months of both insurance companies telling me to wait until fault is resolved, both companies have decided that their respective insured driver is not at fault and each one tells me that the other company should pay.

What should I do to get somebody to pay for the repairs to my building? (this is in California)

Should I apply for $1M 20 year term policy now or wait till I improve health in a month or two? (US)

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 09:48 AM PST

Hi /r/insurance. As the title suggests, I'm trying to figure out the implications of my health when applying for health insurance. I have $100k currently through my employer, but of course want to leave my wife and adult stepson better off than that. I'm just trying to understand the implications of applying today and revealing my health data now versus in a couple months, when I expect to have much better numbers.

Health details: I'm a 40yo male non-smoker. At 5' 9" and 220 I'm in the obese BMI range. Had blood work done at the beginning of December and it came back with total cholesterol over 300, high LDL to HDL ratio, and high triglycerides.

Based on past experience, it will take about 1-2 months to drop the ~20lbs to get me to "overweight" BMI (203 lbs). (I am a fairly stocky build with linebacker legs, so getting to 169 lbs - "normal" - isn't possible). Not sure what the results will be with strict diet & exercise regimen, but certainly expect to be in the 200-250 total cholesterol range.

    Pregnant and moving across country

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 02:27 PM PST

Hey all. I currently live in Colorado and my SO and I are going to be moving back to Tennessee due to my pregnancy (No family/help in CO). I am currently 15 weeks and doing great overall!

I currently work full time as a veterinary technician and have pretty good benefits/insurance. When we move to TN, I most likely (fingers crossed) will be able to get my old job back as I left on good terms to move to CO. At that time, I would be right at 6 months along. The employer knows I'm pregnant as well.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be eligible for insurance/maternity leave until after the 90 day probationary period. I also think I would make too much money to qualify for government based healthcare. I am at a loss for what to do for coverage/care in the mean time (also planning to work until my due date).

Anyone have any tips or guidance on what to do through this period? TIA!

Hypothetical not-at-fault accident with two at-fault vehicles and no Collision coverage

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 06:52 AM PST

Suppose I do not carry Collision on my insurance and get into a three vehicle accident in a comparative negligence state. My vehicle looks totalled. I'm assuming I have to file a claim with each of the vehicles' insurance?

Ideally the insurance A will pay for X% of the total loss and insurance B will pay for Y% of the total loss. What if X+Y doesn't add up to 100%? What if insurance A says "we are only responsible for 20% of the damage" and insurance B says "we are only responsible for 10% of the damage"? How would one handle this kind of situation?
