    Accidental Software Developer Needs Help

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 08:36 PM PST

After trying out tons of specialized software for my business that I didn't like, I finally just paid someone overseas to build something based on my specifications. It works well enough that I think other companies might pay to use it.

Because I need to create more software for my own use soon, I'd like to find the right way to do it from the start so I can sell it later. Are there any resources you'd recommend?

My programming experience is limited to Intro to Java, which basically means I know I shouldn't bother spending the time to learn how to program it myself. How do I protect IP when outsourcing programming and pick the right platform for use by other companies?

    Thanks in advance.

Looking to start a Consultancy business

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 10:45 PM PST

    Hi all,

I've worked in sales for many years and have very often been the top performer and most successful in my roles. I'm currently looking at a change of pace and start teaching and optimising other businesses strategies rather than focusing on personal sales. I have the knowledge, but I am absolutely lost at where to start.

What I'm wondering is has anyone else started a consulting business before? What type of marketing should I be looking to do and how do I find and reach out to my potential clients?

    Thanks all

I just moved from Georgia to Colorado. How to handle the llc?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 04:44 PM PST

    Hey all,

I run a side business that I originally registered an llc for in the state of Georgia. Last month, I loved to Colorado and plan to be here permanently.

My question is, should I re-incorporate in Colorado and merge the Georgia llc into it? Should I just keep the Georiga LLC and register as a foreign business in Colorado?

At minimum I need to register for a Colorado Sales Tax license as I sell retail products.

Any feedback would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

    Demoting Manager

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 01:02 PM PST

I own a small business. I have a manager that wants to reduce her hours to part time. I told this manager that she would not be able to be manager anymore if she wanted to reduce her hours and she was fine with that. I have my doubts that this manager will be able to work well under another manager since she was a manager for a long time. Should I let this manager go once I replace her?

Need to find a smart lock or keypad to fit metal shop door

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 03:52 PM PST

As the title says, I'm looking to find a smart lock or at least a keypad that will fit my metal shop door. We have a lot of people coming and going and need to be able to easily give or revoke access without the hassle of using physical keys.

My problem is the type of door and how narrow it is - so far I haven't found anything that fits. Any ideas?

Here are some photos of the door lock: https://imgur.com/a/T7gdl

    Best Consignment Program Software Suggestions?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 03:59 PM PST

Hi- I've been running a consignment shop for 8 years (almost all consignment but I do buy some items wholesale) and using the same program- Cosignment SuCCess- but they've discontinued updating it and I need a new computer and am pretty sure I cannot transfer it to a new computer.

Going to double check that, but besides that, I thought maybe it was time to upgrade.

However after doing some research tonight, it seems the 2 that come up a lot- My Consignor Pro & Resale World/Liberty are not really an easier program to navigate. They might have some newer/possibly better features, but they do not seem as user friendly as I'd like and on quick inspection even be lacking some things I'm used to.

Then there are some more modern looking software consignment programs like Rico Consign and Simple Consign that have a monthly fee of about $100. I didn't try the trial for these, but don't really think I want a monthly fee when I've gone this long without.

I'm getting pretty confused and frustrated- I didn't have luck googling and trying to find other suggestions (maybe someone is better at googling than me?)

My next thought is to message a bunch of consignment stores, but I am starting to think there is just not really a perfect program for Consignment.

Basically- if you own a consignment shop, which program do you use and why do you like it/not like it?

    Thank you!!

Hello people, I am a children's book illustrator trying to find a business plan that can help me monetize my work... but I suck at it...and dunno where to start...

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 06:01 AM PST

Happy New Year everyone !!! So, as the title says, I am a children's book illustrator and I love drawing since I was born. I am currently trying to turn my passion into a career and get my name out there in order to get some clients or collaborations and make everything overall more professional. So i would like to start a small business but I don't know where/how to start!

2017 - was a great year for me, I improved a lot, I upgraded my tools and I have illustrated several children's books!!! Everything sounds great, right ? Well, i've done all this work on fiverr ( a website you may have heard of ) and I think it is a great platform, i'm also one of the few people on there that enjoys drawing unique illustrations and not automatically generate them using softwares or other websites. Here's the thing... i've got clients coming back to me for more, one of the books I illustrated even made it to a local news network and my clients in general are very happy with my work as well as my personality because i'm a very friendly guy SO I want to take this further while I keep working on fiverr. ( not trying to brag , lol )

2018 - my plan for now is to create a website for myself, maybe with a contact form so can people get in touch with me if they have any projects or want to collaborate. Other than the website, I am using social media websites to promote myself of course, but I do not know what to do more than this that will actually be beneficial for me.

This is where I need some advice from you guys, what would you do if you were in my place ? Have you started something like this and had any success , selling artwork / t-shirt designs / prints / owning a shop etc ? Any advice you may have is VERY valuable to me !!! P.S: sorry for my grammar errors ! Much love to each and everyone of you and have a fantastic new year !!!

My friend is causing a massive issue

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 08:29 AM PST

    Hi Small Business,

I started an online e-commerce company a while back and for whatever reason decided it would be a good idea to have a friend involved. Guess I thought it would be a nice idea to have someone along for the ride.... big mistake.

We're split 80/20 and we haven't taken any money out of the business yet for ourselves but I do 95% of the work. I've talked to him about this before and I️ decided to give him some deadlines etc and he finished them late. He has 0 drive or innovation to try new stuff. I've gotten recommendations to just keep him busy with work and I'd really love to just see him gone but there's a few issues:

1: His quality of work is absolutely terrible. 2: We're great friends (outside of business) 3: We'll be going to school together for the next 2.5 years

I'd really like to figure out a way to just knock him out without creating too big of an issue. I think battling down to 90/10 or 95/5 is a little silly even if that's what the work comparison is like.

Worth noting we're now doing 5k < a quarter in revenue and a big factor here isn't money, but experience and as an EC for college

Hope everyone is having a great start to their New Year, I'm in the process of doing some research and planning to start a business so I'm thinking my 2018 could be interesting. I have kind of a general question, do most people use lawyers to set up a new LLC, or are there any good sites online that can be used? Thanks for your help!

    iPhone Repair Program

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 02:34 PM PST

I fix phones on the side and would like to turn it into a legitimate business. I'm thinking about starting a program where customers can opt into paying a few dollars a month and if their phone breaks I will fix it. It's pretty much insurance, but I wouldn't replace the phone I would fix it myself. How do I research how much I should charge per month to make a profit? Is that considered insurance? If so, do I have to get licensed? Any advice would help.

Protecting personal info with LLC formation

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 02:07 PM PST

I'll be forming an LLC in Oregon this year. I'd like to protect my personal information from being publically available—I get enough junk mail to myself as an individual, would rather avoid getting B2B junk as well.

I know about registered agent services, but the paperwork requires a street address for the place of business. Can I also use the registered agent address for that? What about a "virtual office" that provides mail forwarding?

I live in Oregon, but I've been looking at filing in Nevada due to their better privacy laws. I'd like to avoid that if possible, as it doesn't seem as simple of a process.

EDIT: This business is just myself, doing development for my own apps and websites.

    Cell Phone Retail Store Help

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 07:34 PM PST

I run a cell phone store of one of the big 4 cell phone carriers in the USA. One of my goals this year is to increase our monthly foot traffic from an average of 2K a month to 3K a month. We have many rules regarding marketing to the general public since most of our marketing is done at the corporate level. No social media. No email. No telemarketing. We are limited to newspaper ads and direct mail ads, both which are cost prohibitive. Taking the aforementioned rules into account, what other types of strategies can I do to increase foot traffic?

Good schedule generator for me to enter clients?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 08:46 AM PST

I run a one-person cleaning business and have 20 clients. I'd like to add these clients into a system, saying that X shall have half a day every second Friday, Y is fine with any day half a day before lunch, etc.

I handle the scheduling so no online self-booking needed.

Does anyone know of any such tool?

    Small supermarket inventory/employee/invoice management advice?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 01:19 PM PST

Hey guys! So I have owned a supermarket that sells fruits, vegetables, grocery, dairy, meat, etc,. for 5 years now. This whole time i've been doing everything by hand and memory and it's getting tiring. My parents are going to take over the business while I finish school and hopefully get a white-collar job. I really want to make the transition easy and the management even easier.

    • Right now, my biggest problem is I have no way of managing inventory, or even know how much I have of what, without actually going to my basement and checking it. I have 2 walk-in boxes in the basement, one for dairy/meat, etc,. and one for fruits and vegetables. Everything else in the basement is space for grocery items. Every night I go downstairs, eye ball what I have and order the minimum needed for the next day the following morning. This causes some oversight, as sometimes employees mess up and don't rotate it right, some stuff expire, etc,. This doesn't happen often, as thankfull I have a good turnover, but it's money that can be saved.

    • 2nd is my payroll/employee. I have 10 employees at the moment, and I keep track of hours myself, by hand. I'm almost always at work, so I know when people leave/take lunch. I tried using an app, like buddy punch, but people forgot to do it, and it ended up not being worth $30/month. I may try it again, and withhold pay if they do not clock in their hours, but i'm not sure of the legality of it.

    • 3rd is invoice management. Right now, I have a giant calendar where I write post-dated checks that my suppliers cash in on the given day. I usually post-date 2 weeks maximum, maybe 3 weeks during the off-season winter. This system has never failed me and the last 4 years not once has the supplier cashed it in early, and I have extra money in the checking account just in case it ever happens. I keep the paper invoices in 3 separate folders, one for inside the store(grocery/dairy, etc,.), one for the outside(fruits and vegetables), one for bills.

Sorry for the wall of text, but i'm quite honestly exhausted doing everything by hand and would welcome some advice on how to tackle these problems. This being a new year, I figure it would be easier to just start from January 1st with a new system, while keeping an eye to make sure everything until december 31st 2017 clears and goes without a hitch.

I'm doing well and am not struggling to get by, but I'm sure there is a more efficient way. I'm currently 3rd year of my Operations Management degree, but besides calcus, micro/macro economics, and some accounting classes, I have not learned anything that can help.

Digital media freelancer getting busier, in over my head, how to scale?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 04:01 AM PST

    Hi Reddit,

Background; I am Australian and trading mostly in Australia, my career has been web & tech related

I have been working as a freelance website and graphic designer, social media manager & SEO marketer for the better part of the past 6 years casually and now have moved to work in my small business full time while keeping other casual employment on the sidelines as a backup.

In the past year I have registered and traded under a business name, taken on more clients, self taught a little marketing and setup some of the technical infrastructure I've needed to keep operating and scale such as a CRM & billing portal.

I have a couple of casual staff and have been building relationships with contractors throughout and have plenty on the books who help as I get busier yet still I am finding myself either overseeing their work or working myself well overtime for little pay.

My competition are charging anywhere from my price range of $1500+ to $6000+ with little to no difference in service.

This is how swamped I am becoming, I feel I need a mentor and even possibly a partner - I suppose my questions are:

What is the best way to go about finding a mentor in my related field?

How would you handle your marketing?

How would you handle your pricing?

    Thank you kindly.

Long term goal of starting a small cafe

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 07:34 AM PST

Happy New Years to all you smart and wonderful folk, I don't know what I would do without Reddit. I've always had this dream that I would start a coffee shop, and due to school and arrangements I have about 2-3 years until my plan can spring into action, is there anything I can do now to help with my chances of achieving my goal? Is there anything I should be considering now that I'm probably not thinking about. So far I have nothing but hopes and dreams, and this whole idea may sound like a drunken New Years promise, but this has been a goal of mine for at least a year an a half now, and I'm pretty committed to the idea. Thank you guys and happy New Years!
