    Stocks - Friendly Reminder

    Stocks - Friendly Reminder

    Friendly Reminder

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 08:56 PM PST

Don't get upset if someone posts screenshots of how they gained 500%, 1000%, 8000%, or whatever in 1 year.

It is understandably frustrating when you're sitting on modest gains while know-nothings brag about how they turned a couple hundred into a couple thousand over a few months, but let me assure you: those cases are extraordinarily rare, and the other 95 out of 100 people will probably have lost money that way (30 will probably lose most of their initial capital).

Remember that as an investor, you have 2 goals: preservation of capital (money required to stay in "the game"), and steady gains.

This means that you are REQUIRED to diversify, and do your DD on whether the stock's growth prospects/fundamentals are sound.

Sure, you can throw a few bucks here and there into weed or meme stocks, but a lot of it simply boils down to sheer dumb luck.

Did anyone foresee Veritone, an extremely speculative "AI" stock, would shoot from $20 to almost $70?

Did anyone foresee garbage stocks like Twitter (loss-making) would gain 45% in 2017?

Did anyone foresee Canopy Growth would shoot from its properly valued $9 to almost $30?

No, almost nobody did. It was pure "luck" and FOMO.

Anyway, to avoid dealing with instances like these (esp. on the Internet where anyone can lie or even photoshop their portfolio's "performance"), I simply do the following:

    1) Ask what investing philosophy that person uses

    2) Prove that their previous calls/advice on what to buy have managed to beat the market in the past (a method called "Backtesting")

If they cannot satisfy these 2 criteria, the person is probably lying/hoping to "get lucky." Don't bother with these people, you might as well consult an ouija board or throw darts at a financial newspaper.

    Am I an idiot?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 01:25 PM PST

The last three days have been very good to my tech heavy portfolio. My holdings in PayPal, MU and Facebook have done way better than I expected. Today, my gut told me that it was too good for it to continue like this and that tomorrow will be a red day with plenty of "buy the dip" opportunities.

So, this morning, I sold all of my profitable positions and now I'm 70% cash (tbf, I was pretty close to hitting all of my price targets).

I'm thinking that I might have made a stupid move and that I should have just stayed in my positions. Is it stupid to make "gut feeling" trades like this?

found 197 shares and don't know how to sell

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 11:38 PM PST

so my grandpa found a certificate claiming ownership of 197 shares of global sources unlimited which at the time was 1 cent a share and now is 20 dollars a share. So that's pretty close to 4 grand i believe at it's current price. I want to sell it for him because he's pretty much giving it to me as a gift for my investments. I'm pretty young and have been invested into (what can't be discussed here because of rules so I won't mention it) since the start of last year.

I just want to know how I can sell these, I'm new york based. I have no knowledge about stocks and my grandpa doesn't really know english. These were givin to him as a gift at the time.

Thanks for any help. Iunderstand this is a very noob thread.

Any recommendations on a med-high risk ETF based portfolio? Is it stupid to only buy IWF?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 09:11 AM PST

This ETF seems to hold everything I'd want to invest in. But is it stupid to just hold a single ETF in your portfolio?

For context, I'll be investing quite a lot of money soon into a retirement account, and I intend for this to be a 20-25 year long term hold. I am comfortable with higher risk now while I'm young and then transitioning to a lower risk portfolio when I'm closer to retirement.

So is 100% IWF advisable? Does anyone else rock a "one ETF" portfolio? Or do you have other ETF-based portfolios that you can recommend that are med-high risk?

    Is Nintendo still a buy?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 09:40 AM PST

They had a great year last year with a few big releases and their console coming out. Will it continue though in your opinion? With the video game world growing so much and watching what their Chinese counterpart (Tencent) is doing in the the video game community. I wonder if they can be that for Japan what Tencent is for China for video games and e-sports

From a financial standpoint they're growing like crazy with revenue growth over 100% in a recent quarter.

    Long Term Investments

I'm a college student looking to add 200-300 dollars to my portfolio. I want to invest for the long term. The only long term investment I currently hold is 125 bucks in GE. I know I can google this question, but I prefer the advice of individuals. Thank you :)

$DUK, any insight to why this is crashing today?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 12:10 PM PST

$DUK is new to me. Saw they are very oversold, and have a new CFO as of today, but I'm not sure that explains the additional price dip over the past two days.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I'm still learning and not always 100% sure I'm looking at everything I should be.
