Is the Market in a Bubble Right Now?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 06:07 PM PST

Do you feel like a correction is coming sometime this year?

I breakdown the following in the video here:

The 3 Phases of a Bull Market

    1. The Accumulation Phase
    2. The Public Participation Phase
    3. The Excess Phase

    Accumulation Phase

Start of the upward trend (smart money) Comes at the end of a downtrend (early 2009) low prices, low risk

    Public Participation Phase

During this phase, negative sentiment starts to go away and biz conditions improve As good news spreads, more and more investors get back into the market sending prices higher This phase is not only the longest lasting, but also the largest price movement

    Excess Phase

As the market gets stronger over time, we get into the Excess phase At this point the market is considered HOT by all investors aka right now Smart money starts to scale back their positions.

    CAPE Ratio

    • The CAPE ratio stands for cyclically-adjusted price-earnings which was made popular by Nobel prize-winning economist Robert Shiller.

    • CAPE is calculated by taking the price of the S&P 500 and dividing it by the average of ten years worth of earnings.

    • When CAPE is above its long-term average, the stock market is thought to be expensive. And when CAPE is nearing historic highs, some would say the stock market is on the brink of a crash.

    • Currently, CAPE is hovering near 34x, which is substantially above its long-term average of about 15x.

Domestic vs. International Valuation and Performance

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 08:19 AM PST

Although value hasn't been so predictive since the worlds Central Banks have been pumping liquidity into the system and distorting historical truisms, there is still something to gain from valuation multiples.

Below I have subtracted the US Enterprise Value / Earnings before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization from International to create a relative valuation.

Next I ran a regression against the spread and total return. It is not perfectly predictive but, I think, it still makes a case for valuation multiples being useful measures of future returns.
