Making money on others waste(Direct Mail advertising opportunity?)

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 09:04 AM PST

sitting here at my 9-5 contemplating ways to escape the rat race and actually provide value to society and this idea just popped in my head.

Now where I live I tend to get these mail advertisements from local and global companies(BK, MCD, jimbobs cleaning etc) by the boatload. What I began noticing is people just throw these away garbage can next to the mail box full of them. I wonder if there is someway to capitalize off this waste and provide companies value by making these coupons electronic(maybe a weekly QR code with all the coupon listings, perhaps making them targeted). It might require alot of data but i think something like this would be feasible. You guys see this idea having any weight?

[Dev] Teamarooo - Employee off-boarding made easy

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 07:52 AM PST

Hi everyone, I am the creator of Teamarooo which allows you to easily revoke an employee's access to all your services within a single platform. The idea came to me from my personal experience in my own startup (see my previous post). Long story short, I forgot to remove an ex-employee from our AWS account and for one whole year, he still had access to all our servers and that scared me as hell.

The idea of Teamarooo is giving you, as an Admin, a list of all your employees using all your services. You just need to connect your services to Teamarooo and we automatically give you the list of all your employees with the option to revoke their access to one/all your services. You can either search by employee or service. That simple. No need for "Single Sign On", 1Password or an Excel sheet to track your employees and services. You can start using Teamarooo without any change of your services, it is almost "plug-and-play" ;)

We are preparing to launch our Beta version and you can Sign Up now to be among the first to use Teamarooo. We will support many services such as Bitbucket, Github, AWS, Google Analytics, Microsoft Azure among many others. You can also propose other services you use so we can integrate them, the idea is to support as many services as possible.

I want to know your opinion in such a service, all feedback is welcome ;)

    Thanks!

Case study: how Patreon built their culture of learning

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 11:25 AM PST

I found this case study of Patreon's culture fascinating.

They've managed to grow at an incredible pace while maintaining an employee attrition rate at 67% below the national average. I think it's worth looking at their strategy for ideas. They are an excellent example of a small company that moves fast and is still able to maintain a healthy and enjoyable workplace, which is one of the things I value the most at my company.

Patreon has a few tips to embed a culture of learning at your startup or company.

    1. Create a culture where failure is embraced and fear is nonexistent.
    2. Operationalize learning from the hiring process to upper management.
    3. Introduce unique learning opportunities for your employees. Patreon's methods are encouraging and sponsoring their employees at every level to seek mentorship, budgeting for company "fieldwork," and maintaining transparency in everything including many executive decisions.

Looking at Patreon's model and applying some of their values seems like it could build a sustainable and cyclical culture of learning, which in turn keeps team members happy.

What's the best way for me to make a news website?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 08:55 AM PST

Hey everyone, I'll keep this short.

I'm looking to build a website so I can start adding content and eventually monetize the website using advertisements. I'd like it to be a site similar to a traditional news site. Whether that news site is IGN, MSN, Gamespot, or Android Authority. I just want to be able to write articles and have it all be on a nice user interface.

What's the best host that I can use to build this website? I have experience using Squarespace to build websites for small business, but the sites I build were mostly "static". They were simply landing pages with some information about the company/contact information.

Would Squarespace still be viable for building the kind of website I want to build and being able to easily monetize it?

Where to source high quality/non-garbage products from China?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 05:16 AM PST

I've order quite a few products from Aliexpress/Alibaba and so far the overwhelming number of products have been sub-par. I've gone for cheapest products and some a tier or two above. So far I've found them overwhelmingly lacking in quality. I've seen many online businesses selling garbage products so I'm always skeptical about their long-term feasibility.

I'm very interested in a few private label products. I've found the exact model of a particular item on amazon reviews seem overwhelmingly negative. Most common theme being that it snaps/breaks within a matter of months (for something that should last a few years). This seems to reflect my experience buying from China.

I'd greatly appreciate any advice given

My first run of "business cards" are done

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 11:02 AM PST

I decided I wanted to do something unique with my business card. At first, I wanted it to have a utilitarian purpose so someone wouldn't throw it away like most of us do with the generic paper cards.

I own and run Divergent Adventures, a 2 month old tour guide company in Denver, Colorado. My niche is firearms instruction (and it's the highlighted package) so I wanted a business card themed around that.

I decided to make a business card by etching the brass case of a 44 magnum.. The pics are terrible at showing the detail due to the reflection off the brass but the final product is great! Everything is etched around the raised lettering which carries the polished brass look. I used a sharpie as a resistant and dunked the pre-fabbed casings in ferric chloride for an hour. I am into the casings for 20 cents per unit + $15 for the jug of ferric chloride and my time (which i've enjoyed the arts and crafts project). The final product will have a 3x3 printout of my tour packages, directions to my website, folded in half, rolled up and stuck in the case. This leaves exactly 1/4" of paper hanging out the end to pull it out. Boom; All of my info and products in one neat little package.

I've had mixed feedback from friends and family that it may turn some customers off and leave me susceptible to bad online PR. My rebuttal is, I know I'm new and in no position to turn away business, but do I really want to be stuck with someone for 8 hours that gets offended by a bullet casing? As a man of risk mitigation, that seems like a lot of room for a bad trip or unecessary liability. In effect, the business card doubles as a culling of the herd and lets me see the interest of my potential client by their reaction to the "business card".

That's why I am here, for your feedback. I started drivung Uber to meet customers. Is it really too volatile of a political climate to hand these out as one would hand out regular business cards? Is it bad business from a guy too close to the concept and ideology to realize it?

Looking for business options to get started

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 10:53 AM PST

    Hello all entrepreneurs.

Recently I've moved from the States to Canada. I'm working on getting citizenship through common law, although am attempting to pull a Work VISA out from somewhere. My background is in sales/marketing and finding a job that is fulfilling for me in my current predicament is challenging to say the least.

In the meantime however, I plan to work for myself doing a small service for residents that can go unnoticed. Something like snow shovelling or window washing. However, this winter has been terrible and I don't think we've even seen a total of 5 inches of snow. And it's not quite the season for window washing just yet.

So I'm in the process of brainstorming ideas of things I can get started in to at least get some money rolling. I'm perfectly fine financially to sit here for a year not working, but I'm the type of person who always has to be doing something and I hate not working, honestly. I'm very career focused and it's hard for me to be happy not working.

If anyone has any ideas of small services I could play my hand at, I would be extremely grateful.

What is the name of this contract when dealing with programmers?

Should I quit my job to fulfill my dream?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 01:17 PM PST

I'm in a difficult situation where I am not happy in the type of job I'm working. I want to open my own quick serve restaurant one day but I also want a house and to start a family. Both of which costs A LOT of money. Basically I need to choose one or the other.

Which path should I take? My boyfriend and I were recently offered an opportunity at this boba shop to work as Store manager and Asst. Store manager. Should I quit my decent paying job with incredible perks to work a more demanding low paying job with no benefits at all at a small quick serve restaurant? This doesn't even sound like an option right? BUT this job will teach me valuable experiences that I need to learn in order to become a successful restaurant owner in the future.

I'm just torn on what to do as I want to save money for a house/marriage/kids.

I've heard stories of people quitting their high paying jobs to fulfill their dreams but I'm just so scared to make this move!

I'm just torn on what to do. Another thing, my boyfriend will be working alongside me at a even lower salary than what was offered to me at this restaurant. He thinks is a great opportunity for us but I'm absolutely torn as I want to save money for a house/marriage/kids.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Search Engine Optimization - Best place to start?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 01:03 PM PST

    Good afternoon,

I Launched my Shopify Store in late November and I am still a full time student in my last year, so I do a little bit at a time because that's all I have the time for. I posted my site here asking for general advice and feedback. What I gathered at the time from that was my need for a logo, and to make the prices more appealing to the eye.

Now, several months later, I would like to increase traffic to my site from search engines. Where did you start, and what makes SEO a little easier to understand/conceptualize to you?

I still need to get a Trademark and make more social media (currently have only FB, looking to spread to IG)

For testing/ advising purposes, my website is

    Thanks for the feedback!

    Does psychology pricing still work?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 12:16 PM PST

Hi, I am starting a new business and this is not the first time I am starting to think about psychology pricing.

Let's say I am starting selling a digital product with a subscription. I used to sell some stuff, before and I never used pricing like 4,99$ etc. Because I simply don't believe it works. I like more straightforward and honest price.

What do you guys think? Does it work nowadays? How does it work on the internet? It kinda feels bad to put that kind of prices. 5$ would look more professional and serious. Would be cool to read some real-life cases regarding pricing strategy in today's reality.

    Rate my instagram?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 07:49 AM PST

Hello fellow entrepreneurs! I run an art supplies company where we sell hand made oil paints. We're about a year old now. We don't get a ton of sales but some sales here and there which is enough to motivate me to keep going. I am trying to get my instagram running to introduce my products to new customers but I am not sure how to go about it.

The good news is our oil paints are beautiful and vibrant colors so it's easy to show them off on Instagram through pictures and videos but I am finding it difficult to get more likes and follows from them. Should I just run sponsored ads on my posts or post more often? I'm really not sure what to do. Some advice would be appreciated! The Instagram page is https://instagram.com/masterartsupplies

To include shipping or not to include.. that is the question

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 11:29 AM PST

I have a new product that I'm trying to sell and I'm not sure which price looks better to customers. My product would normally sell for $49.99 and that price would not include any prepaid shipping cost. However since my shipping box is large, (but light) the cost to ship to the east coast is $24.00 (USPS). So I need some advice as to what looks better to the potential consumer. Is it better to see the lower price and then get hit with the high shipping cost or see a higher price and then a normal shipping cost? I really wanted the price to be below the $50.00 mark but I also don't want to scare away customers during checkout. Any advice or options that you could toss my way would be appreciated.

Also note that there is not another product like mine sold anywhere. So I have no competition to base my price off of.

    • Option 1: $49.99 plus $24.00 shipping

    • Option 2: $59.99 plus $14.00 shipping

    Thanks

Licensed logo products — getting started

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 10:55 AM PST

I'm curious if any of you have started businesses designing/making/selling licensed products (e.g. college sports teams), and if so, how you got off the ground. I'm not worried about the actual design, manufacturing, marketing, or sales aspects right now; it's just the licensing piece I'm trying to sort out.

I have been researching the licensing process, and it seems straightforward in most cases. However, the biggest thing I keep getting hung up on is that they require things like four years of sales data, bank statements, business credit reports, etc. I'm not sure how I am supposed to provide these things for a business that hasn't even started yet. Is the idea that you have to get started with non-licensed products for several years, and only then you can apply for licenses?

I have several ideas I'm exploring and a few of them hinge on being able to license the logos, so it seems like a chicken and egg problem. Without the logos, I don't have a viable product, but without an existing product it seems like I can't license the logos.

If any of you have been through this, I'd love to hear your tales and tips.

Stamps.com, Shipping Easy, Shipstation, or other???

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 10:38 AM PST

I tried them all and they seem too confusing for me but I imagine they will make sense if I wasn't doing orders manually and everything was imported automatically. I ship between 5 to 10 things a month so I don't need a fancy high tech solution but I though I might be able to save some money overall using one of these services.

I currently do my sales from various sources but I intend to consolidate all my ecommerce to one specific webstore (like shopify) and I plan to use one of these shipping services when I do that.

    Any preferences out there?

    Need feedback for website

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 08:39 AM PST

I have a few space related instagram accounts and have decided to create a website for this following. I want the site to be more than just a place to go for buying products and actually offer something of value for free which is why I am working on creating pages about my favorite scientist who inspired me and sharing quotes, videos ect. I am not sure what else I could be adding. I have more designs coming and have just been playing around with them lately I do think the site has too many products of the same design and will be updating this soon. Basically any feedback is appreciated because I do already have an audience and want to launch it soon. I have never made a site before so I have much to learn.
