Just received an order from a fishy sounding consumer. How should I proceed?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 12:08 PM PST

I was going through my most recent orders for my site, when I noticed one that stuck out. The customer name was that of a fairly well-known fictional character. I also looked up the address; it's linked to a condo, and the address is also attached to an LLC with a very generic name. If you google the LLC it takes you to a basic website that has no real information, and just a bunch of generic content like "connecting investors with solutions" and "maximizing creative opportunity for our stakeholders, clients, and team".

I know this is all pretty vague, but I'm still hesitant to give out any real customer information, just in case. It all seems very odd to me, but I haven't encountered anything like this before, so I'm not sure if I should do anything. Any help would be really appreciated.

    Start a business while under a no-compete.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 12:29 PM PST

I'm not sure if this is the right reddit, so I apologize if it's not.

So the Boss/Owner of the company I work for has been ignoring clients since about November. Without getting into any details he had some family issues come up about a year ago and me and a coworker tried our best to keep the business going for the last year thinking he would get his shit together.

But since Oct-Nov bills/rent have started to go unpaid. He's stopped responding to clients for how long I'm not sure, but it's getting pretty bad now. I had a client hunt down my address somehow, show up at my apartment, just to bitch at me.

He has sole access to digital files, web hosting, bank accounts, pretty much everything I need to do my job. So needless to say we are losing customers in droves right now. The ones we do have for even just reorders, he ignores.

I'm paid (I don't know how since my pay alone is out stripping incoming projects for a year now) but I rarely hear from him & have I almost have no work. I spend more time answering angry clients wondering if we're out of business than designing anything.

I've been thinking about starting my own company after getting downsized from two other corporate jobs (during the recession and both times the entire department was laid off), but I figured it'd be easier to just continue the corporate grind. But honestly I hate culture and I hate not being in control of my future.

I'm to the point that I want to start a business and honestly I could almost start small side business with the just a few of the clients that we've lost as a company. The problem is I signed a non-compete when hired. Do I have any options? I'm in Wisconsin if it matters.

TLDR: Place I work for is a sinking ship. Want to start my own business but I signed a noncompete.

A reminder on how powerful gifting can be

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 09:00 AM PST

I saw this vid of John Rulin giving away $1500 and it reminded me how powerful gifting can be.

I've given away gifts as simple as a $5 book to something as expensive as a $2000 custom knife. There is something more powerful for making it a physical object (it serves as a constant reminder), but anything that sets you apart burrows into someone's psyche.

Which business did you start with the intent to be a hobby but actually exploded much more than you thought it would?

Just over a year old, my personal tshirt print shop's growth and projections

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 11:21 AM PST

    See my shop online.

Started last November, I started learning to screen print in my garage just for a fun hobby to pick up outside of my 9-5pm salary job. A year later, things are picking up to a point where I have something to do literally every day after my dayjob. (5-10 orders a week) It's taxing my time and energy but I feel really positive about it, but the monthly extra income it provides can't yet cover my bills.

At this point, my goal for 2018 is to push the shop as close as I can to become my full-time gig and leave my current job, working for myself and having that freedom.

I think I'm mostly looking for any advice or suggestions on how to aid myself accomplishing this. Marketing advice, production, economics, etc. I'll take anything anyone has to offer and I appreciate any feedback.

    Thank you!

Been Lurking Here For Months. Today I Finally Put My Anxiety Aside And Take Action. Any Adice From Seasoned Go Getters Greatly Appreciated!

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 05:16 AM PST

Hey guys, as mentioned in the title, I'm starting my very first venture in attempting to create an honest, reputable window cleaning service. Want to keep by backstory short here, but I'm a veteran who recently hit a rough patch of some nasty developing symptoms of my service related PTSD, taking a hit on my spirit and motivation at life in general. I ended up walking out of my job, mainly due to the lack of respect given to me and my ex-coworkers, as well as the type of environment I was in I viewed as toxic. Walking out was just spontaneous. I've never been so happy, and ashamed of myself for being weak minded. I collect disability from the VA, but there are other comrades who have fought a way tougher battle than I currently face weekly.

But this nagging thought that would always resurface of being my own boss, relying on nothing but my own work ethic that I greatly pride myself upon, and the confidence I used to have while obtaining some of the best mind changing experiences that I cherish from my service, has given me a sense of motivation I haven't felt in years. I'm anxious, of course, but I just need to pull my jewels out of my coin purse and attack this thing one step at a time, keep it organized, and keep it simple as I can.

Now, no more sob stories, it's down to brass tacks. I have a plethora of ideas to expand services of course, but for now, I just want to stick to promising window cleaning, and cleaning more than my future clients expect out of me. Under promise, over deliver as much as I can. I do want the money, but that will be a backseat to how well I represent myself as the professional I am, and giving the best possible customer experience.

I researched other local competition in my immediate area, and the reviews are hot garbage, no offense to those owners, so Im really wanting to under cut the fees and provide a better job, but that feels a little too cuthroat for my taste, so I have pondered the idea of actually contacting them, and requesting training.

Yeah, I cleaned my first window yesterday, on my own house. Only manual labor I've done is moving weights like a knuckle dragged, cement work, tile placing, and demolitions. Two large panes for the sliding doors, the main entrance window, and my upstairs windows Ill tackle today after picking up my ladder, and business cards that I designed.

My two new neighbors offered me money, but I told them I'll do it free, as I want to make sure that they aren't paying for something I can't fully deliver yet. So those 2 first clients are just practice. Another client owns a liquor shop, which I probably shouldn't frequent as often as I do. On the positive, I'm great friends with the owner. His store is a brand new business too, so I know I can make him an awesome bi-weekly account for a discounted rate of course.

And luckily for me, I just moved into a really great community. Great neighbors, everything all hunky dorey. I will own my neighbor hood for cleaning services, it's my turf, my neighbors, and our collective communities windows will be freaking immaculate every 2 weeks. I really, really hate counting my chickens before they hatch, but whenever life decides to throw a freaking 200mph curve ball at me, I damn sure will get up fussing and hollering, and kick that God damned baseball as a home freaking run. I know it'll be tough, which is why I wanted to just receive motivational stories, or just general advice from some of you guys. I really feel like shit is going right again for me, and my motivation has been skyrocketing ever since I said "fuck thinking", went to home depot, bought about 70 dollars of the best equipment after a few weeks of research into everything I could think of, and used my Photoshop skills from making memes. I just want to go out and stop sitting on my ads. Honest work, for good honest money.

I want a website. Funny enough, I know the basics of html, css and js. But I feel I don't need it as of yet. I have coworkers that are still stuck hating their 9-5 with the narcissistic anus kissing manager that only contributes to my old company by fratenising with the CEOs daughter. Im salty, but whatever, its another driving point, albeit not the healthiest driving factor. I managed to convince a good buddy of mine to quit in a few days, and start door knocking in his neighborhood. I plan on giving him 75% of whatever he bids jobs at, since I'll be footing the bill in the near future once I gather capital for insurance, and to register as an LLC. I can easily win cheap bids with adsense, and I'm actually quite adept at internet marketing when I was a shit head ripping people off by selling get rich quick schemes, and arbitraging other people online services. Stupid crap like finding someone to pay me 45 dollars for a solo ad, and just paying a provider with a shitty list 20 dollars to do it for me. Just deceitful shit that made a quick buck here and.there. Stay away from BHW. Some great business owners there, and some methids were crazy at generating a passive income, but it stopped almost as quick as it would start, and it took me forever to realize that taking pride in the work to generate an income is what I really needed.

So sorry for the wall of text, I just need to thank you guys for planting that initial seed that sprouted and is making me take action now.

I'm nervous for what's to come, but equally excited, and it will push me to generate clients, and to build a relationship with many many people in my large county.

Am I being overconfident? Should I reevaluate things? I just really want to go out and start cleaning, but I know I have to approach this with a plan of attack.

Local business owners, what advice would you be willing to lend?

And could you maybe share stories of your startup, your motivation, and how it went?

I'm all ears, I thank anyone who read this essay!

Sole Proprietorship, Should I get a separate EIN and a DBA? Also Business Credit Card Questions

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 10:35 AM PST

I've been filing under my own name and SS for taxes since starting my own business (design and fabrication) a couple years ago. In the beginning it was just a small/side income thing, but last year I've dedicated most of my time to it. I was wondering if I should be setting up a new EIN and a DBA? I don't think I need something like an LLC as I don't plan on having employees, or run into any bigger legal troubles (or maybe I'm wrong about this).

Besides separating for organizational purposes, what are other pros?

If I do get a separate EIN, I will be filing 2017 under it correct? Or would that be for the 2018 tax yr (next year)?

I've been also using my personal Credit Cards and checking for my business. It's getting larger so I think I want to separate. I currently use 2 cc's; one for Amazon (because cashback) with a low limit; and another I use for most supplies because it has a higher limit. How much will opening 2 more CC's affect my credit? Maybe I should open one, then wait a couple of months. Also should I be getting a Business CC, or it doesn't matter since it will still be under my name?

Any information on any of this would be helpful.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 01:50 PM PST

    Hey what's up everybody!?

So long story short, I wrote a recent article titled "8 Insanely Profitable Skills You Can Learn For Free (And On Your Own Time)"...

And after receiving over 3.4K likes on Medium, I realized it was a helpful article that I should probably share with this group.

    Overview:

So for a quick synopsis on this post, it provides detail on 8 extremely profitable skills that anybody could learn and start a freelancing career, along with free resources to do just that.

This was created based off the knowledge I've gained over the years, and I've either made money with each skill or helped/watched somebody do so.

    Who it's for:

My primary target audience was for people who are looking to start a freelancing career, but after receiving numerous emails, I quickly learned that it worked great (if not better) for people who were completely unaware of this industry.

    The main goal:

My main goal with this article was to make the reader aware of profitable freelance skills and how they can learn them for free.

In addition to this, I added some commentary on each skill to help decide if it was for them, primarily by giving a little more background on that skill.

    If you're interested:

If you'd like to see these 8 profitable skills and how anybody can learn them for free, you can find the article here

What is the best practical ecommerce marketing guide that effectively taught you how to increase sales?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 01:46 PM PST

Internet is full of information. Too much noise. There is an infinity of guides everywhere. Where should I start? What is your story? What is the guide that helped you build a clients base and made your sales grow high? Maybe pure practice, a Youtube full tutorial, an ebook, a website, any resource that contains practical tips, and/or step by step procedures.

I'm planning to launch my first ecommerce, I want to have the best knowledge of it, my brain is now full of noise about everything: SEO, mailing-lists, social media, instagram, facebook, adsense .... too many things at the same time. I just want to read, watch, listen to, one piece of information that contains it all, and summarize it like I used to do with college cheatsheets.

    Thanks.

If not then any other resources or always I can meet people who do the same would be great. Thanks

Any of you guys dabbled with coinhive? is it even legal.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 01:04 PM PST

Hey guys my friend just told me about this thing called coinhive and was wondering what you guys think about it.

To be honest I haven't done any research on it, I just heard about it but I need to go to sleep as I'm very tired and gotta wake up early tomorrow. Just going to right this post and hit the bed.

So Basically what he said this coinhive does is that you place some code on your site and people visiting your site start mining and you get some cryptocurrency (bitcoin or something similar)

To be honest it seems like a nice idea as people would not have to see adds if you know what I mean.

But than again what would you think if someone was using your computer to mine a currency while your on his site.

Personally if it does not harm my pc I wouldn't really care. But not everyone thinks like me is this something frowned upon (By this I mean do people hate it as much as adds or way more than adds. And by adds I mean 3 adds on 1000 word article not some spammy pop-up infested add site with more adds than actual content)

    Is it even legal?

Is there something similar that asks the user whether he would like to mine while his on your site and if he refuses it wouldn't bother him? (that is if coinhive does not already do this)

Does google hate this SEO wise?

Does it slow down the site?

Anyways what are your thoughts about this?

Sorry for bad spelling and grammar really tired guys.

    Thanks to all that reply.

New and Young Entrepreneur Fresh of the Boat Looking for Student to Participate in My New Product Survey to Test If There Will Be a Market for My Product.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 12:54 PM PST

1.) My product will be an app for students that will help them study more efficiently and effectively.

2.) Before writing was invented, we used to learn by listening and speaking instead of reading and writing. We learn better this way. What do you think about the following idea? The following app will be like Audible and other audiobook and podcast apps but it won't consist of books, lectures, or podcasts. ---- It will be a library of tests on every subject. Research shows that students who take practice tests do better than students who only read their notes, listen to the lectures, and review. Practice testing greatly enhances our learning. With this app, you can test yourself while on the go; hence, increasing your efficiency.

3.) I am fresh of the boat, I have not been working on this for too long. I have other ideas too. But I chose to go along with this one because this one will help students and life long learners.

    4.) I don't have a 6 month, 1 year, or 5 year plan yet.

5.) My most memorable negative experiences has been the difficulty I have to face and how much at a disadvantage I am at since my family is very religious and since I am an ex-muslim. The stress really affects my productivity. My positive experience is my determination to work hard. I always rejuvenate from the stress and focus on what's important.

6.) I would have started work early and would not have wasted time sleeping late and waking late. I would have advised myself to work and earn money, spend wisely, and save lots. Nonetheless, I am now very happy that I am more hardworking than ever before.

If any students are interested in participating in my survey, please direct message me. I have created the survey on google forms, I will send you the link if you direct message. Thanks.

Does anyone have any more detailed spreadsheets or resources they would like to share for creating better data.

Got invited to attend an industry conference for free. Just gotta pay for flight. Told a friend. He said "Those things are BS." Is he right?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 12:48 PM PST

It's a major industry conference in my business's industry. Cool speakers. Grammy-winning musicians. Awesome venue.

I mean, yes, I'm probably not going to actually learn anything. Just be inspired.

But is he right that I should just spend that time working and selling my services? Don't pay for a long flight then spend three days in seminars?

It's as much fun for me as work. And the whole week will cost me $500, which I can afford right now.

    What do you think?

How to expand an English teaching business?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 12:19 PM PST

My siblings and I (29, 23, 16, and 13) are all native English speakers living in Israel. With standardized tests requiring knowledge of English and parents wanting their kids to be taught by Americans, there is high demand for our one-on-one lessons. However, we all juggle school and work, so time is the biggest constraint and one on one is not a very efficient system. Being that we have access to a large house, and are all very playful and social people, we were thinking of capitalizing on the fact that there are many of us and opening a small school to teach on the weekends. We have also considered creating an English daycare, where kids can interact in English with the whole family during the summer months, while running around and playing in the pool. Has anybody ever tried something like this, and are there any other methods we could use to capitalize on our skills?

Increase Your Online Exposure Without Increasing Your Budget

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 11:52 AM PST

When you're first starting out, every dollar that you spend on online marketing matters. You likely have multiple goals. You want to gain website traffic, increase your social media followers, and build your online reputation.

All these goals can be achieved with good marketing strategies. But, you might be able to speed up the process by increasing your online exposure. With brand recognition, it becomes easier to gain traction and get your foot through the door of your target market.

I'll give you a few simple tips that you can use to increase your online exposure without having to increase your marketing budget.

    Use Consistent Branding

If you want people to recognize your brand, you need to be consistent with your branding. This means using the same logo on your website and social media profiles. Anywhere that your logo or business branding appears, you should use the exact same image.

You want to ensure that people realize that your website and your social media profiles are one and the same. They aren't two separate individuals or businesses.

So, your YouTube profile, Facebook profile, Twitter, and other platforms should all use the same profile image and it should include the same branding that appears on your website.

    Gain More Social Media Followers

Once your branding is in place, you should focus on gaining more social media followers. It doesn't cost a dime to share content on social media. Monday through Friday, you should post at least twice per day on each of your social media accounts.

This means that you'll be posting at least 10 times per week. But, you don't need to worry about creating 10 original posts. 8 of these posts will come from other sources, such as industry-leading blogs and news sites.

Also, become active on social media. Interact with your followers. Share personal stories. Engage your audience and join communities. This all helps you gain followers without having to pay for marketing.

    Start Creating High-Quality Blog Posts

Sharing content on social media should help you gain followers. It's difficult at first, but once you pass 100 followers, it'll become easier. Then, start creating high-quality blog posts.

You'll already have a schedule in place for sharing 8 pieces of curated content on social media. For the remaining 2 posts, share links to your original content. The followers that you've gained will share these posts, increasing your online exposure without requiring any additional spending.

Write Guest Blog Posts for Other Sites

After you get the hang of writing quality blog posts for your own website, start submitting guest blog posts to other sites. Look for websites that get a lot of traffic. Getting a guest blog posted on one of these sites will increase your online presence and help you establish yourself as a voice of authority.

    Share Your Opinion with Everyone

The final step for increasing your online exposure without increasing your budget is to share your opinion with everyone. What I mean by this is that you need to comment on blog posts, comment on social media posts, answer questions on Q&A websites, and become active on relevant forums.

Blog and forum commenting can help you earn backlinks, increasing your search engine rankings. Commenting on social media or answering questions on Q&A websites can help you get noticed. These steps build backlinks, increase recognition, and could help you gain more followers.

You can increase your online exposure without spending additional money. It all starts with consistent branding. Then, focus on social media. Once you gain followers, start generating quality content and sharing it.

Use these tips to start increasing your online exposure.

The Power of Promoting - Lessons I've Learned From Various Social Media Platforms

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 11:18 AM PST

Hey everyone. I posted here about a month ago explaining some of the struggles I had with my new personal finance website.

Link to previous reddit post: 3 Months, 2000+ Pageviews Later - A Personal Journey!

Well, I'm back with some updates to share. First off, thank you to everyone who gave me feedback. I had comments/emails from several of you guys. I did everything I could to try out all the suggestions given to me. A lot of people told me to keep pushing my content out to various social media sites and see what works best. Here are a few things I've learned:

Reddit: Quite honestly, it was scary for me to post on Reddit because it's not the easiest place to promote your blog. There are rules to follow. Things to learn. Proper etiquette. I had to research a lot before getting the courage to post into some smaller subs. I did get traffic from reddit. But it's a very short spike. And it's hard to find a way to promote here every time you have new content. So I want to just keep it to my updates every couple months or so.

Twitter: This is where I first started promoting. The Personal Finance community here is amazing. Lots of support, retweets, and comments. But, I don't get a lot of traffic from here. This is where I have the most followers, too. I have my tweets automated each week, so it's not too much work to promote here. But I would definitely expect more traffic from here than I'm actually getting.

Facebook: Some people told me to join Facebook blogging group and promote my content there. I joined around 20 different groups. My Facebook is literally flooded with people promoting their blogs. I tried to just post mine and engage with people. But I think everyone is really interested in just promoting their own content. It seems like its incredibly difficult to get noticed in those massive comment threads. Maybe I'm not doing it correctly...but I haven't seen too much success from Facebook. The referral numbers from Facebook show this to be true as well.

Now, someone also told me to try out Facebook advertising. Many others told me not to. But I'm one of those people who can only learn from my mistakes. So I decided to try it out. I only spent around $10. And I got 3 clicks to my website. No subscribers or anything. In my head, this seems like a bad deal. I'm not selling anything on my website, so a paid promotion doesn't seem all that great to get people to be engaged in my writing.

Instagram: Somehow, this has worked best for me. I haven't done anything but share an image from my latest post and link back to my website. (And the occasional meme). I don't have a lot of followers. I have more followers on Twitter and Facebook. But I get the most referrals from Instagram. I also get more comments on my posts on Instagram, so at least the Personal Finance community here seems actively engaged. I know I can do more than just post my latest posts here, so I'm trying to figure out other ways to promote on Instagram.

Pinterest: I blame my niche (personal finance) for failing here. I have no idea how to promote stuff on Pinterest. Lots of people see the best returns on this platform. I cannot figure out how to promote personal finance related topics effectively here. I know you can spend lots of time creating cool infographics/what not but I'm not sure if its worth my time since I'm not familiar with doing things like that. If you've had success here, any help would be appreciated!

Stumbleupon: I've submitted lots of posts here. But I think you have to also devote yourself to the community. I haven't had any referrals back from here yet, and I don't know if its worth my time to keep submitting articles here if I'm not willing to engage with the community. I'll keep trying, but I haven't seen too much success.

Quora: I've actually had quite a bit of success here. I post long answers to related personal finance questions and link back to certain blog posts that help support my answers. I get a few referrals a day from here. However, it's a lot of work. I don't just copy/paste my article as an answer. I have to devote a lot of time writing a post on Quora that is helpful to readers but also stands out against other responses. Sometimes, it feels like I'm rewriting an entire blog post just to promote it...so I'm still not sure how I feel about this.

These are just some of my thoughts from what I've learned in the past month or so. My website is staying stable. I'm still getting around 2000 views a month. I'll definitely be looking for more ways to get that number higher and play around with more social media platforms and strategies. Looking forward to sharing more down the road!

If you've got any tips/tricks of your own, or if your experiences line up with mine, I'm interested to know!

edit: link to blog! (for those interested)

    Established Market or Not?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 11:01 AM PST

In your opinion or experiences what are the benefits and drawbacks of the following scenarios:

    1. starting a business in an already established market where you can make incremental improvements to a product?

    or

    1. starting in a not yet established market that has proven successful in other markets?
