Big 4 interview with 6 managers/seniors, what to expect? Posted: 28 Jan 2018 05:09 PM PST Hi, I have an interview this week with a big 4 firm for an experienced indirect tax position. I currently have 3 years of tax experience in the specific field I am interviewing for however, I was curious as to what I should expect from this interview? The interview will be begin with 2 seniors taking me to lunch followed by 4 separate meetings with different managers. Obviously, I am expecting behavioral questions as well as for me to be tested on my knowledge in the tax area I am interviewing for. I currently work for a small firm which consist of about 10 people so this will be a new territory for me as this has been by only job out of college. My guess is that since I am interviewing with so many people, there won't be a second interview. Also, I am not sure if meeting with this many staff members is typical for this type of position? With that being said, is there any advice or tips that you could share with me which would better help prepare me for the interview? [link] [comments]

Does anyone here have their own accounting or consulting practice? Posted: 28 Jan 2018 05:55 PM PST By accounting I mean doing tax returns not just for individuals but also for business, bookkeeping, payroll, and consulting. I was curious as to what your day tol day looks like. Also what should a person have in order to be ready to start their own practice? Should you focus on working in a smaller firm or start a bigger one and move down. [link] [comments]
Why do you need your 2016 AGI in order to e-file? Posted: 28 Jan 2018 05:15 PM PST I'm a CPA, so everyone asks me for tax advice, but I'm an auditor, and don't know how to respond when people complain to me about this! Why is that a necessary component of filing online? None of my friends saved their old documents haha. [link] [comments]
How To Handle a CPA with lack of industry and T-account knowledge? Posted: 28 Jan 2018 09:18 AM PST Hey All - obviously a throwaway account here. There's an active CPA in my accounting team and this person lacks industry knowledge, business knowledge, and T-account knowledge. This CPA sometimes needs help on T-accounts to understand the purpose of some....which I believe are basic JE's. By the way, this person has Big 4 experience. It's apparent this CPA can't handle a "hands-on" Accountant position.....and was more of a "plug and chug..." type of accountant. Do you have any recommendations on how to handle this employee? I'm trying not to get in specifics and gender. This person is dragging the whole team down. [link] [comments]
re-thinking about trying one more time for CPA exam. Posted: 28 Jan 2018 08:34 PM PST I am thinking about sitting for CPA exam. I have heard a lot it is never too late to get CPA. But I just want to know if that is even possible. I gave Regulation exam in July 2014 and got 51% while working full time job. My job wasn't accounting related but it was helping me payoff student loan. My question is since I was allowed to sit for CPA exam in 2014 (because I met the requirement of 150 credit hours;graduation dec2013) should I just assume I will be allowed to sit again for the exam. I mean is there any requirement like continuing education credit or something of that nature. Residence State: OHIO Kindly advise if you have been in this situation or know someone who has been through this. [link] [comments]
Director of Internal Audit Exit Opportunities Posted: 28 Jan 2018 07:58 PM PST A lot of the IA directors I have met are young - usually in their early 30s. What kind of exit opps come after being an IA Director though? Will these people just be Directors of IA for the next 25 years, then retire? Do they shoot for a C Suite position? What does one do after 5 years as an IA Director if you want to 'move up'? I'm hopefully getting promoted to Sr this year and I really want to decide soon if I should try and stick around so that I can pursue a Director level job in the future (whether that be in Public or Industry), or if I should move on to one of the gazillion jobs I have in my LinkedIn inmail/my personal network. I guess I'm basically asking if IT Audit/Internal Audit is a dead end road. [link] [comments]
[CAN] Using a job offer to get a raise at my current job - Has anyone done this? Posted: 28 Jan 2018 04:05 PM PST I currently work in industry, and I suspect I'm underpaid. I've been in my role for 3 months. The department I've worked in (and the whole finance area as well) has had a lot of turnover. There are a lot of similar jobs open elsewhere, since the job market is great in Canada at the moment. I'm thinking of applying to those jobs, and seeing what compensation I'd be offered (and eventually get an offer in writing). I could then take that offer and show it to my current employer, and show them that I'm worth more than I'm currently being paid. I can then ask for a raise (and justify it that way). I'm thinking that this could work, because the place I'm working for has had lots of turnover. Having me quit and go elsewhere would cause them to incur even more turnover costs. However, this is VERY unconventional. Nonetheless, has anyone here done this? How did it work out? Alternatively, does anyone recommend doing this? [link] [comments]
Transitioning Military to Accounting Posted: 28 Jan 2018 03:56 PM PST Hey guys! So I'm currently active duty military and I'll be separating in exactly 498 days. I'm taking a long hard look at being an accountant. It seems like it's a solid field that will always be in demand. My job in the military isn't at all finance or business related. I'm a technician (fixing radars and working with a data link system). I'm wanting to go to school at a community college and then transfer after 2 years to a 4 year institution and finish up my BA in accounting. What all did you guys do, or wish you did differently, that made you, or would have made you more, successful? Thanks guys and I appreciate any advice or help you can throw my way! Does the school you attend affect how you learn accounting? Posted: 28 Jan 2018 01:52 PM PST There are plenty of cheap online accredited school that teaches accounting. However, I know actual brick & mortar schools students would say it's tougher. Professors are no help, just throw hard exams at you, stressful, etc. And who know's if you actual learn as much versus an online institution. I haven't conducted a one-on-one interview with students who attended my local brick & mortar college even though I should. I just go based on ratemyprofessor. I know it's not the best source, but useful one so far. Besides everything I mentioned, the point is, Does the school affect how you learn accounting? Besides the fact of the student's learning abilities. I hope I am emphasizing this clearly enough. Hopefully, someone understands [link] [comments]

Interested in being an accountant/financial analyst Posted: 28 Jan 2018 10:38 AM PST Hello, I'm currently pursuing a bachelors in Quantitative Economics with minors in accounting and statistics. My school doesn't offer a major in accounting, but the minor is around 9 classes. And I'm only getting the stats minor because it's only 2 more classes and why not. My plan when I graduate is to get a MAcc, so I can sit for the CPA exam. I'm interested in working as an accountant or financial analyst, I have no desire to do any public accounting work and would only want to be a company's accountant. I would only do public to get experience needed to work for a company, which I found out is pretty common. Do you think my undergraduate combination prepares me well for this route? Or is it a bit overkill? I feel like the econometrics, mathematics, and stats background doesn't hurt considering my desired career path, and probably allows me to stand out a little. I also want to work for companies like Tesla or NASA, so I feel like a more rigorous background would be more appealing, but what do I know, What do you guys think? [link] [comments]
Looking for Positive Accounting Stories! People who love their jobs, how did you get there? Posted: 28 Jan 2018 12:13 PM PST I keep hearing negative things about the Accounting profession. It sounds like I'll be working long hours, doing boring grunt work, and hating my job forever. I was hoping to maybe hear some good stories from people who love their jobs. What are the benefits of a career in Accounting? Were you always happy or did you have to find a niche? [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Jan 2018 08:27 PM PST Hi /r/Accounting, I came across this question in the Cambridge VCE Accounting Unit 1 and 2 textbook as part of my year 10 holiday homework. Since I couldn't find the review question answers online, I figured this subreddit would be the right place to ask. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :) [link] [comments]
I just need to complain for a minute Posted: 28 Jan 2018 08:26 PM PST I don't understand why car service is such a big deal. My commute is like a 1.5 hour trip and involves one of my parents driving to my train station past 11pm because I don't own my own car. Why do I have to leave at 9:30 just because I can justify a car after 10, but then keep working on my train anyway? And why can't I just get a fucking hotel every once in a while, car service to where I live is nearly 150 before tip. I'm pretty sure I would get 4 hours more sleep for less than that cost. And why the fuck can't I just leave at 5 once in a while instead of 7 ("early night") to see my girlfriend who I'm doing long distance with. Just give me my 2 hours because we both have to leave early enough to get ready for the next day, and I will clearly make it up somewhere else in the week. Also just let me have time for sex for fuck's sake. My productivity is fine and I'm not tired out or anything but seriously hate these little things, they honestly just don't make sense. Posted: 28 Jan 2018 07:06 PM PST An acquaintance of mine and I are in an argument about an S-Corp and taxes. He believes that if you open an S-Corp, and pay yourself a fair salary, you still have to pay self employment tax on your pass through income if the income is under $127,000. For example, if I had an S-Corp that made $80,000. And paid myself a salary of $40,000. I would have to pay self-employment tax on both the salary and the pass through income according to him. He is so distraught that he's right, he made a wager. Can you guys verify that this is incorrect? [link] [comments] |
