I'm an accounting student & it's been two years since I've taken my intro to accounting class. The assignment gives me all ledgers as of the end of year, besides sales which I was able to figure out. Now in writing the balance sheet I realized my assets do not equal my liabilities + stockholders equity. For the life of me I cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong. Ethical dilemma Posted: 27 Jan 2018 07:55 AM PST Hi, I have an ethical dilemma in the workplace I'm hoping someone could give me some advice about. To give you a bit of background information, I'm currently working as a trainee accountant in a small tax office in the UK and have been doing so for a couple of months. I have just finished preparing the accounts for a company that's year ended 31st March 2017 and I had found out whoever did the job last year had declared dividends of ~£200,000 in the accounts but had forgotten to declare these on the director's self-assessment return last year. Upon reporting this finding to the manager of the job he seemed really pissed off, as I found out he actually did the job last year and he's obviously fucked up. His attitude really gave me a cause for concern as he obviously knew he would be in trouble if the partner on the job found out. He said he would sort this out but after checking the director's self assessments for 2017 and correspondence between the manager and the client, it appears that nothing has been done to amend this. I'm a bit unsure how to go about this. Do I raise this issue with my manager who is going to be pissed that I haven't forgotten about it? Or do I go over the manager's head and raise it with the partner? Or am I just supposed to ignore everything in this situation? I'm not sure if trying to address this is just going to cause a shitstorm. Recommendations for building up my resume to get into tax. Posted: 27 Jan 2018 09:32 PM PST Hello I just found this subreddit, I am currently on my last semester and will have the 150 credits to sit for the exam which I plan on doing next year. I found tax to be to my liking and want to develop as much experience related to it as I can. I am potentially looking to get into an entry level position for mid size firms. My GPA currently stands at 3.65, I am currently doing the VITA program as an internship for school credit, meaning I have to do 280 hours total of it which isn't bad as I find it fun. I did advanced certification and so far its a pretty nice experience. I also want to get certified in excel as I think it might help to have some sort of software experience on the resume. Anyone have any recommendations for specific software? I know quick-books is another but I didn't read good things about the certification. Posted: 27 Jan 2018 11:15 AM PST I'm a Junior at my university and went to a recruiting seminar yesterday for "Summer Leadership Conferences" for some firms. I heard almost every firm say that you work about 40-60 hours a week, and it sounded really intimidating. I don't mind doing that kind of work at the beginning of my career, especially as an intern, but how many of you are in your late 30's still doing that many hours a week? Is it awful working that much? I just keep thinking about going into work at 8am and not getting off until 8pm every night for my whole career and it just sounds miserable. One of the ladies even said that a lot of firms don't allow people to have their own desks. You get a ticket that says "You're at desk 13" or something and you set up all your stuff there. I guess it's making me question things and I was looking for some reassurance. If i continue with accounting, can I expect that to be my future? If any of you could go back to college and do it over again would you still do accounting? When I google it even marketing majors are making like the same general starting salary accounting majors do, but do you feel like you're making more than others you graduated with? I know there are a lot of questions in this post and I hope I haven't annoyed anyone. I still want to do Accounting, but I'm just looking for general advice. Looking for a job? Posted: 27 Jan 2018 01:58 PM PST My sister is looking for a new job. She got hired as a Fiscal technician 7 months ago. She gets paid $13 an hour. This job doesn't require a a degree and she got her Bachelor in Accounting last year. Looking for a job was hard for her at first but she eventually found one that pays her a little more than her previous job. The thing is, she didn't really care about her gpa in college, she has less than 3.0. She's smart but she didn't really care about internships and stuff when she was in college. Fiscal techs are categorized under bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks. They prepare requisitions and invoices, prepare payroll, and prepare reports. what are some jobs and positions she should apply for if she has an experience as a fiscal technician. She has a little bit of bookkeeping experience because she helps my parents with their business. Also, alot of small firms in our town don't post jobs online. And she heard from my parent's accountant that a firm in our town is always hiring and she did cold call them one time and they told her to send them a resume. She never did tho. How does the hiring process work for these small firms. They do they do internal hiring. She can't do go career fairs because she's out of college. We have gas and oil companies, Connoco and Philips in our town (the only reason our town exists). If anyone's worked for this company, what was the hiring process like? Is volunteering for AARP same as VITA? Posted: 27 Jan 2018 01:35 PM PST I don't have a VITA program where I live.(I live in a small town) I would have to drive an hour to a bigger city to work for VITA and I'm not gonna do that. However, we do have the AARP program here in our local library. But every time I try to register, I can't because I can't choose my birth year 1996. I think you have to be 22 and older and I'm 21.
