My dental insurance is avoiding paying for my root canal (oklahoma)

    Posted: 31 Dec 2017 03:19 AM PST

I have dental though my work. I pay monthly for it and I began having coverage in early 2016 and had a root canal done, which is covered. My portion of the payment was $500 I paid that. My dentist told me a few weeks after my insurer wasn't paying saying that I wasn't covered by them. I re-confirmed with my employer that I had the insurance and she sent an email to make sure my information was correct. It was and shortly after I received my insurance cards -a couple of months after I had been paying for the insurance. I gave my dentist the card thinking perhaps my account numbers my employer gave me where wrong. They never said anything else to me about it, so i figured it had been fixed. I have had several cleanings/ dental work done since this time. Now a few months ago I received a bill from my dentist for $1,000 and when I contacted him about it they told me my insurer never paid for that root canal in 2016. So I call my insurer to find out why they hadn't paid it but had been paying for the following procedures. I was told they couldn't pay for it because my dentist didn't submit for the payment until a year after the procedure was done and they couldn't pay for anything that had been held that long. I know this is bullshit because my dentist was trying to send it to them when we were trying to figure this mess out the first time. So I call the claims department and I tell them that they can provide proof that they had submitted the claim several times before that year limit. They gave me a fax number to fax it too and I gave that to my dentist and didn't hear anything else. That was ~2 months ago and I just received ANOTHER bill asking for the $1000 again. I just called them to ask if they paid for it and my dentist's receptionist told me they never received a response after faxing them the evidence. I've gone to this dentist my entire life. I was one of his first customers, starting when I was in elementary school, so they're not hounding me for this money or anything but I just don't know what to do about this. I dont just have $1000 laying around to pay them, and I just dont know how to get my insurer to pay.

    Car Accident Please help

    Posted: 31 Dec 2017 01:23 AM PST

    Hey,

I'm in need of some legal advice right now and also unsure of what to do I live in Hong Kong. This is my first traffic accident. So basically, what occurred was I was on a dual carriage-way roundabout going straight and I took the inside right lane to go straight and I indicated left, and looked at my mirror before going out intending to use the right lane of the exit that I wanted to go. When arriving at the exit, this is when the accident occurred. There was a bus also using this roundabout but he came in one exit before me and was intending to leave one exit after me from what he told me and the police but he was using the outside left lane to do his whole turn. I'm really not sure who's at fault here but from the road users handbook in Hong Kong when going straight in a roundabout I'm allowed to use the right lane but when turning right as the bus was doing, he should have used the inside lane like I was doing at the time.

The attached link below goes to a map showing the incident and the separate routes I was taking and the bus was taking

    Thanks so much

I'm with Allstate in Ontario. One of the kids clogged the toilet and it ran over for long enough to flow down through the floor to the next level... The ceilings are bad. Is this covered?

We called to make a claim, but the adjustors don't be in until January 2. Fuck.

    Insurance Company Liability

    Posted: 31 Dec 2017 02:22 AM PST

Hello! Just a quick question! If the other parties insurance company decides whether they are liable or not for the accident, can this decision from the adjuster ever be changed? Or is it a one time final decision? If they decide that they are not liable, can I get evidence or provide more reasoning for them to possibly re-decide? Im in a situation where the police report shows a lie that the other party stated. There were three cars involved in the accident but the report says there are four. Thank you and any feedback helps!

Taking over a Variable Universal Life policy from parents...to keep or not to keep? No love on PF sub

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 05:53 PM PST

Happy nearly new year! I found out my parents have had a variable universal life policy since my early childhood and have been paying on it for roughly 30 years. I should have taken this over earlier, yes, but just found out about it. My question is essentially what should I do with it now? Financial/retirement background...large student loan burden (going for PSLF), manageable mortgage, max 403b/457, backdoor roth, and HSA currently. Interested in other areas to put money outside of a taxable brokerage, hence the debate about keeping the VUL. Have appropriate level of term life, LTD, umbrella/home/auto FWIW.

Currently, cost is ~$250 annually, current cash value ~$4000, death benefit ~$75,000. As of the last statement last year the costs were: mortality charge $75, administrative charges $58, product charges $115; and $300 of investment gain.

First thing I need to do is contact the policy holder and get it switched to me and ask for a policy in force illustration. Should get this done next week.

My questions are the following: 1. Based on me currently maxing my available retirement options and plans to handle my other debts, is there value in keeping this policy? I am from the school of not mixing insurance and investing, thus did not seek out a permanent policy on my own, however now that I've had this in place is there a utility outside of death benefit for me? 2. Could/should I over pay premiums to increase the cash value? 3. Unfortunately, the APR on a loan from the policy is ~7.5%. If I get to say, 10k cash value, can I take a loan out and then cancel the policy? 4. Again, i'm in my 30s, have a level T30 plan of appropriate coverage, and plan to have immediate end of life costs covered if my term lapses prior to kicking the bucket, so wont necessarily need the death benefit of this policy. However, I would be willing to keep it around for the death benefit/investment vehicle.

I've done a fair amount of lurking around here, bogleheads, WCI, etc and needless to say I know there is no love for VUL/permanent policies. However, I'm thinking my situation may be a little different given the longevity of the policy and currently maxing non taxable brokerage retirement options.

Appreciate any insight, thoughts, recommendations, etc.

Losing Foster Kid Benefits (health insurance) When Getting Married

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 07:30 PM PST

My Girlfriend and I are both in college, Age 20, and would like to get married ASAP. She is a child of the state of Florida. Right now the state takes care of her Health Insurance, and college tuition.

Will she lose these benefits if we get married?

I am trying to calculate if I have the funds to support us if we were to get married very soon. If we are gonna have to pickup those two huge costs, I need to make sure I calculate accordingly.

Questions about valuing contents of house after fire

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 06:28 AM PST

Hello all and thanks in advance for reading!

The contents of my home were damaged after a recent fire (no injuries thankfully!). Our insurance adjuster sent an inventory company over to the house which created a 1000+ line Excel document listing every single item in the house. I expected the adjuster to value the items, but instead the document was sent to me to supply a replacement cost to every single item.

There are dozens of items I literally have no idea how to valuate so any suggestions or strategies would be greatly appreciated. How do I suggest a value for boxes of 40+ year old vintage toys (never itemized or appraised), original art, signed band posters, family photos, furniture gifted to us that doesn't identify a make/model, a rear projection TV that cost $7500 15 years ago but is worth $50 today, prescription drugs, prescription eyeglasses, collections of spare parts, licensed but obsolete software, travel mementos which didn't cost a lot, etc.

It seems that so many things are impossible to value. Is a VHS tape what it originally cost? What a current DVD costs to replace it? or $0.01 which is what it would have sold for?

I look forward to any insight or guidance. Thanks!

Buying car insurance across city/county lines? (US)

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 12:53 PM PST

I work in a city that is an hour from where I live. My town, unfortunately, does not have any insurance agencies open during the evening. I am about to buy a car and therefore need insurance, but I work 9-5 so my availability to meet with an insurance agent is very limited. Because I am new at my job, I am not able to ask off yet. If I could go to an insurance agency over my lunch break within a few blocks of my office, that would probably be my best bet. However, premiums in the city are much higher than in the town where I live. If I sign up for a plan at an agency near my work, I don't want this to result in a higher premium. Would I get charged these higher rates, even though I reside in a town with low-average premiums? (Note: I use public transportation to get to work, so I would not be traveling in the high premium city with my vehicle).

    Dumb question about renter's insurance

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 11:49 AM PST

I'm in the last six months of a lease at what I hope will be my last apartment for a long time (having a house built).

Through the last few years of renting, I've noticed corporate apt complexes are getting more and more cutthroat about what they will bill you for when you move out, and I'm speaking as someone who spackles, carpet cleans, and hires a professional cleaning service when I move out. (And I buy the stupid drip pans.) Because we have a great rental history and credit, I'm pretty sure we paid zero security deposit on this unit.

However, a couple of months ago we noticed there's a big chunk missing from the underside and edge of a granite kitchen counter in current apt. We spent about five minutes trying to figure out the hell how we knocked out this piece (size of a baby's fist), before we realized it wasn't us. Reason being, we never found a random chunk of granite anywhere. So either it was like that when we moved in and we never noticed, or it happened during maintenance when we weren't here.

Given my experience at my last apt complex (where they did a blacklight carpet inspection among other things), I'm braced for the worst and wondering if current apt might try to bill us to replace the whole kitchen counter. (Obviously there's no way they'll believe we didn't do it.)

Is this a thing renter's insurance might cover?

TL;DR does renter's insurance cover damage to the structure that may be billed upon move-out?

(Ontario) Emergency evacuation from my building. Construction workers damaged items. Question about renters insurance.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 06:13 AM PST

    Hello all!

On Nov 30 we came home to see a handful of people working for the town I live in standing in the lobby of my building. They asked if we lived there, we said yes, they then said we have an hour to gather our necessities before the building is completely evacuated.

We found out this week that the construction is going to take at least 6 months so we ended up getting another apartment.

Yesterday, we go into our place for the first time since the evacuation and our dresser is damaged, our bed frame is broken, and a few smaller things (ie picture frames, candle holders, etc.) are also broken or damaged. The labourers from the town made such a mess of our things and the representatives that were there babysitting us as we were packing kept saying "contact a lawyer" every time we pointing out something that was damaged.

Our brokerage was closed and we couldn't contact them and won't be able to do so until Tuesday - the day we completely move out. My father-in-law drew up the policy but he is now retired and on vacation so I don't want to bother him with it. I would assume it has all the bells and whistles, though.

Since this is such a bizarre situation, what are my chances of actually being compensated for these items? I know I have to contact my brokerage to be sure, but I was hoping to have a general idea before we move to determine whether we'll bring those things with us, or whether we'll leave them there for someone else to deal with. We can deal with the dresser, but the frame and some other items are completely done for.

Any help would be appreciated, and let me know if you need more info.

My car insurance is up by the middle of next month, I'm not quite sure what to get because within the last year I've gotten a newer car. I had an old 95 Lumina and now have an 06 PT Cruiser. Are there certain things I should get or look for? Thank you!!

UK Help! Car + Sofa crash = ????

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 09:06 AM PST

So today I got to my car after parking it at a friend's house. A woman had reversed her car into it with a sofa hanging out the back. My insurance company says this is an unrecoverable loss and I will have to pay my excess as it was the sofa that hit it, not the car. It's going to be expensive so I can't pay it out of my pocket. Anybody out there handy with any of this stuff that could point me in the right direction? Many thanks

Contractors Accidentally Re-flooded My House for 2nd Time...Can I Claim Previously Damaged Items?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 05:44 AM PST

I accidentally caused the sprinkler system in my house to trigger, causing my house to flood. My insurance adjustor came out, assessed the damaged, and paid me damages to my house and personal property.

BUT when the contractors came to repair my place, they accidentally broke the sprinkler system pipe AGAIN causing my house to flood AGAIN with all of the previously damaged furniture still in it. Now, I'm working with my contractor's insurance company but my question is do I have the right to legally make a claim for the items that were already damaged by the 1st flood?

    Question about my dental insurance

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 05:42 AM PST

Some of it confused how this works, it says for Diagnostic and preventive services in network Anthem pays 100% coinsurance. I'm pretty sure hundred percent coinsurance means that I pay everything right? When I was studying for property and casualty exam plans that, had 20% coinsurance meant that you're responsible for 20% of the cost. If that's the case what's the point of me playing a premium if I have to pay 100% of the cost anyway? It also says the annual deductible is $50 I don't know I can't adult some help please and thank you

    Ongoing total loss claim (CO)

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 05:48 PM PST

My spouse was in an accident on November 6th in which the other party was determined to be at fault. Little to no physical injuries by any of the involved parties. On the 23rd the other party's insurance property damage maximum had been exceeded by the claim so it was turned back over to our insurance. We have comprehensive and collision with Allstate. On the 29th allstate took over the claim. The initial impression was that the vehicle totaled, but needed to be inspected by our insurance. On that Friday I reached out to our claims agent to see why I hadn't heard anything and he assured me by Monday I would. I called again the following Tuesday only to find out he was out of the office for the week and didn't ever pass along the inspection request. That Friday I finally reached him and he put in the inspection claim. On Monday we received notice through our claims portal that an inspection was scheduled for sometime between that Monday and the following Tuesday. It did not occur until the following Tuesday (19th).

On the 21st we were told our vehicle was totaled and we would be assigned a total loss agent. The agent has been terrible about actually doing anything. We finally got an offer yesterday, but the payment won't likely be sent out until late next week. The claims agent is telling me that they are not responsible to pay for licensing. They are paying for taxes and the $7.25 title fee, but that's it.

I am at a loss here. Two questions: have they done anything fraudulent here, or is this just terrible customer service? It will be 40+ days to pay out a total loss by the time we're done if I agree to the settlement. Also, are they required to cover the cost for us to register the vehicle?

TL,DR; total loss claim at nearly 55 days total, 30 in the hands of just our insurer.
