Employee stopped showing and didn't answer calls and now filing for unemployment.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 03:35 PM PST

I don't want my unemployment tax premium to increase.

Under the form I have to fill out, what do I put for termination date?

She just never showed up for work and didn't answer her calls.

My understanding is that anyone can get unemployment in California because our system is totally broken. But I'd rather not make it easy for this healthy young entitled woman.

Her first to last day worked was about 82 days so below 90 days. Spent almost that entire time training her to have her no show which stressed me and rest of my employees out as we scrambled to pick the extra work up. I already told EDD she worked less than 90 days but they asking for her pay information anyways now because they are going to pay her. Sick.

Telemarketers and robocalls are wasting a significant amount of time, what can I do?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 09:45 PM PST

As noted in the title, robocalls are really screwing up my day. I run a small 2 man garage. We have no secretary, as we would rather deal with the customers directly. The issue is that if I'm literally elbows deep in a truck, suspended from my belt buckle, fishing a Bolt in a blind hole, and the phone rings, I have to pull the Bolt and my arms out, sit my tools down, get down off of the truck, run to the phone, put on a smile and answer politely, only for it to be a robocall about my Google listing, or a telemarketer trying to "get me better rates on my credit card processing". I need to find a way to filter these calls so that I can actually get work done. I love the relationship we have with out customers, and I would happily drop everything to help just about any one of them, but when I race to the phone and its a robocall, I end up throwing my portable across the shop. They are getting expensive... :) I have reported many of them to the FTC and to Google, but it seems like when I finally get one to stop calling, two more take their place. (Keep in mind, I am VERY friendly when there actually is a person on the other end of the line. They are just trying to make a paycheck after all.) Is there some sort of cheap answering service I could use to filter them out? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What are the most effective strategies for small local businesses?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 12:14 PM PST

    Evening all,

What are the best marketing strategies, so I can get known in my local area.

Currently I have my database, my website (which needs revamping), some B2B networking and a small amount of Facebook marketing on local groups.

I want to increase my marketing streams I would be grateful for if you recommend other effective strategies that I could try.

    Many thanks in advance

Two bank accounts for an LLC partnership?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 06:18 PM PST

Myself and business partner are in an LLC but we tend to work quite separately in our business (both in our projects and geographically). We were talking about setting up two bank accounts (instead of current one), each of us focusing on one account, kind of like separate personal accounts for business.

We also get paid separately for work, which would make 2 accounts a bit easier.

Is this typically done? Or is it strange for a partnership to work this way?

    Soap business!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 09:40 AM PST

Hey all! So I've been trying to find my place career wise, and while doing that I discovered my love of making soap! It's a hobby for right now but I've been considering making a profit. I've looked into the rules and regulations for my area, but what I really would like to know is profit. I'm ok with it not becoming my only full time job, but if down the line I could have a part time job and also sell my soap, well I'll be a happy camper!

Any insight would be helpful =)

Advice needed: New employee cancelled his shifts (California)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 11:25 PM PST

I hired (retail store) this guy knowing he was leaving town for Thanksgiving. He seemed great and I wanted him anyways (he seemed social media savvy and we'll connected in a fraternity that I thought would be beneficial) so I was ok with him missing that holiday. He started November 1st, worked about 4 shifts before leaving for the holiday (14 days) That includes calling in sick for one (his first) shift and changing the hours on 1 of the 4 shifts. I posted the December schedule last week, everyone had the week prior to request time off and he only requested one day off. He just cancelled two shifts without talking to me (we use an app) and even though that option is available we don't use it. Schedules are posted and that's it. If you want to swap you can trade via text. But he cancelled them, Christmas Eve and the day before that which we will be busy. Everyone else is working, even employees that have been here 3+ years. His reason is "he doesn't think he can work that weekend." I'm realizing this person is unreliable and want to let him go but I want to give him the benefit of the doubt and maybe he didn't understand our schedule setup. I plan to call him and explain it to him. But what if he still says he doesn't want to work those two shifts? How do I let him go for that? My other employees are upset (it sent out an alert when he cancelled his shifts) since he's so new and he "gets" to miss two busy retail holidays. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Tax Reform and S Corp impact

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 12:38 PM PST

I'm starting a company in the new year and, at the advisement of my accountant, have been planning to register as an S Corp. I'm trying to figure out what the implications of the tax reform proposals might be, as a friend just made a passing comment that they will eliminate the benefits of an S corp election. Anyone smarter than me understand all this?

Failing Bed and Breakfast/Venue in South Brooklyn looking for ideas :)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 01:18 PM PST

Hey everyone, just wondering if anyone has some suggestions here... I'm willing to use the space in any way plausible, currently I rent out 3 full rooms and 3 sleeping alcoves. Mostly to month or more stays. The rest of the space is full of fun amenities, the basement acts as a lounge, with 8 pinball machines, there's a backyard that seats 17 with a small stage and tiki bar, the main room is about 900 square feet with a projector and full stage. I have a full backline for bands to play, and lighting as well, there's also a rooftop deck with views of the manhattan skyline. There have been photo shoots here and band rehearsals etc, but nothing that is bringing in the type of income to keep the place alive. Let me know you guys have any ideas of how to make the space work, thanks guys!! :)

Clarification: I was originally pulling in about 10k a month,(rent is 5.5k) by renting out multiple rooms, doing event rentals and producing my own events. Unfortunately, the Department of Buildings came down on us and we had to downsize rooms/make them sleeping alcoves (no real privacy) and limit our events.

    Small Business Webstore survey!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 01:22 PM PST

Hi everyone! I recently landed a job with a webstore developer as a business consultant. This company has been around for 15+ years and has primarily worked with big corporations. I'm hoping to get our team to branch out working with small businesses setting up their first webstore, or moving to a new webstore platform. But first I want to know what small businesses would look for or want/need from a webstore, because the needs of small businesses can be a bit different from the needs of large corporations.

To that end, I've created a survey that I'm hoping some of you may be willing to fill out. No matter how big or small your business is, all submissions are greatly appreciated and anonymous! Thank you in advance :)

Any good tips for negotiating cell service contracts?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 01:18 PM PST

So I work for a small business that wants some employees to have company phones, and other traveling reps that need hotspots so they can be sure they have internet access on customer sites. I've been going over the bill (I'm new) and the prices just don't add up compared to what the plan says it costs.

When I think of dishonest people that's who comes to mind. Politicians and wireless service sales men. There's always hidden fees and you never get an honest price. Yeah there's taxes, but my plans says we pay $975 for 150GB of data plus $20 per phone line and $10 per hot spot, and a 10% discount on the total bill before taxes. We have 25 phones and 10 hot spots. How much do you think the monthly bill is? $2,600/mo! That's without even using 100GB of data so definitely no overages.

I feel like with cable providers and cell providers you have to constantly threaten to change providers or they will just take advantage of you and load you up with extra fees and costs. Any suggestions on how to get a better rate or at least an honest price?

Best Cash Register Apps Disregarding Payment Processing

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 05:02 PM PST

I run a small business that is open to the public 1-2 days a week. I don't accept credit cards, and accepting them would add more complexity to my relatively simple accounting process than I care to add. Nevertheless, it's nice to have a cash register app that provides all kinds of stats and totals because it saves me a lot of spreadsheet writing to get the figures I want, and it means I don't have to track my sales on paper as I've been doing since the beginning.

I have been using "Loyverse," and it seems really decent. Square has been recommended to me on multiple occasions, and I've used it when helping with other businesses in the same industry.

My question to you: what quality alternatives are there?

There are a few weeks remaining in 2017. I figured I'd try a different system at the front door every week, since I've been copying all the data into my legacy stats spreadsheet anyway. Whichever application the doorpeople and I like best sticks around for 2018.

    Recommendations?

Warnings on which POS systems truly are a POS?

Your help is appreciated and I wish all of you a highly profitable holiday season! :P

P.S. I'm using Android. That may or may not impact some of the recommendations.

Where should I be looking to find someone competent in running/updating/optimizing a Ebay store?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 07:02 AM PST

So to make a long story short our e-comm based business right now derives about 75% from e-comm (adwords, google, etc) 10% local (walk ins, long established location, etc) and the rest from Ebay. Our employee who runs eBay now started in a different roll but picked up the ebay page after someone else left years ago. Ever since then Ebay has been on the downslide, our page looks like shit compared to our competitors, and recently some snafu that I don't quite know about caused the business to drop off sharply, even more than it already has. Anyways, this employee has other tasks as well and my boss wanted to me try to go about finding someone who could come in, knows ebay in and out, and go from there. Our problem is we're the type of company that hires someone that one of us knows, but when it comes to this sort of thing, we don't really have experience in the headhunting aspect. I tried using some of the career sites but to no avail. I hope this type of post is allowed here, and thanks in advanced to everyone!!!!!

vanity phone number for Jacksonville, FL market

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 04:31 PM PST

I am starting a business in Jacksonville and would like to obtain a very easy, 904-500-9000 type number. There are a zillion vanity phone number companies, but would I do this through my local utility provider (ATT in that market). I do not have a location picked out yet, so I cannot search via address and go through all the ATT steps. I just know that in other markets we have opened, it took us some time to get a good easy number. Any input would be appreciated.

The minimum wage/sick pay factsheets that are dependent on business size, is that worldwide or just that city?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 03:13 PM PST

This is something that should be important for every business to know, what options do you have up your sleeve.

What did you do to negotiate better prices or payment terms with a supplier?

How did you win a job from a more established product / company?

How did you differentiate your business or offering from the rest of the market?

Share away. I want to learn some things.

    Selling my business piecemeal

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 08:19 AM PST

I've run a small creative agency for the past 4 years with some Fortune 500 clients, as well as small startup clients. I'm preparing for a year on the road due to some changes in my goals, so I'm looking at how to close down my business.

I've been in conversation with another agency regarding transitioning my client list to them. The idea is to transition one client, who has already agreed, to this second company with a referral contract where I receive a percentage of the business done over a fixed period of time.

If that goes well, continue to transition more clients until my business is fully closed down and all my clients are satisfied.

What sort of legal paperwork should I️ prepare / is this a common enough situation where there are preexisting forms? Are there better ways to do this?

Details: I'm sole owner of my LLC and work exclusively with freelance contractors. Virtually no overhead and no ownership or property issues. I'm also open to entirely different scenarios, appreciate any advice.

How do I deal with embezzlement?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 12:47 AM PST

I recently became a partner of a small business and have taken up the responsibility of taking care of accounting. Everything has been going smoothly for the past month, until I began noticing our numbers being lower than they should be. I took a closer look at the company's bank statements and noticed the primary partner who started the business had been transferring funds to his personal credit card on a regular basis. Totaling over 10k just this month of November.

I have never dealt with something like this and don't know how to approach this predicament. This is a small business run by 4 partners. The only payment we receive is through the completion of assignments we receive from clients. We have never agreed upon any other form of payment, even for the work we put into keeping the company running (i.e. accounting, advertising).

I fear the company will fall apart if we take this particular individual out of the equation, as he is the primary account executive. Should I confront him? Should I consult with the other partners? What is my best course of action? Does this even count as embezzlement?
