My life has been weird. I'm getting out of a controlling abusive relationship. My boyfriend wouldn't allow me to get my license, or have a job, no friends ect.

I'm currently visiting family for holidays, and plan to just stay. My dad is 100% for me living with him. So that's not an issue.. But I'm not gonna just live here and be a burden.

I need to get a job, I need a GED, my license, I need an apartment. I'm starting from scratch. Totally. I don't know where to begin and I just need some advice.

My mom took me out of school in first grade. She schooled me until about third grade, and abandoned everything. I can do basic addition and subtraction, but not multiplication or division :(

I have a bike, so I assume I could bike to work (my dad has 4 kids to take to school at different hours). But what do I do first? A job? License? A house? 😭

I figure I'll study for my GED while I work on a job, I just don't know what jobs would hire me :(

Affirm: allowing you to pay for your shopping in installements, at 10 - 30% annual interest.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 07:29 AM PST

Interesting article discussing the company "Affirm".

Founded by the former CTO of PayPal, this company has raised half a billion dollars from investors and offers a new way to pay for your shopping.

I think it is worth discussing the dangers of using this kind of financing. Feels to me that this type of service will incent people to buy material goods beyond their means, and fall into a vicious cycle of high-interest loans.

The installment loans, made at 10–30 percent annual percentage rates, or APR, and averaging $750 according to the company, are offered for everything from mattresses and plane tickets to motorized skateboards and coding classes to $500 boots and $200 limited-edition denim.

For merchants, Affirm provides exceptional benefits, increasing average order values across the board; perhaps not surprisingly, people will shop more, and more often, when they don't immediately feel the costs. And for many customers, including Jocelyn, the predictable, convenient payments are worth the higher interest rates.

Affirm customers have an average of 2.2 loans with the company, while some shoppers have upward of 50 at a time.

What's the best way to grow this other than to keep saving. I earned 18 cent intrest on this :/

40 year old stripper where do I go from here?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 02:01 AM PST

I have currently been a stripper for twenty years now. I do have a bachelors degree in University Studies but I never used it. I have been suffering from terrible anxiety and depression. I've tried to hold down 9-5 jobs without much success. Dancing does give me the flexibility to miss work when I just can't get out of bed. After all these years all I have to show for it is $12,000 cash. I payed off my college debt and also my car. I am debt free but have little cash to show for it. Where do I go from here? Lately I've been able to save around $250 a month.

Is there any way to prepare for another Great Depression?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 11:52 AM PST

With the way things are going, this seems like a real possibility. Not imminent, not panicking, but if the economy goes to hell, what is the best way to plan for it?

My employer is cutting my pay by 28%. What are my options?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 09:04 PM PST

I live in Missouri, and my company was just acquired 5 months ago. I was hired on for a new position, and was given 0 on-boarding or expectations, sales goals, etc. No employment contracts were signed. My supervisor has only told me great things about my work, and has told me repeatedly how excited he was to have my knowledge on the team. A business partner of my supervisor told me today I wasn't meeting expectations at the company and would be taking a 28% pay cut. I will also be working for him part time, and my other employer part time. (They both share partial ownership in the other's company)

I know are there are some red flags here but I'm mostly wondering: If I accept the pay cut, will it greatly affect my future salaries? If I decline, can I file for unemployment?

This was sort of a bomb shell for me, not really sure how to proceed. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

(US) I might be laid off. What can I do to prepare?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 07:27 AM PST

    OK basic points:

    • Layoffs ARE coming, but I am not sure if I am one of them.

    • I do not know when it will happen. Could be anytime between now and July.

    • I am married with no children.

    • I have no emergency fund. I spent it on an emergency.

    • Other than my 401k, (which cannot be borrowed against) I have no savings to speak of.

    • I have high debt, but am actively working to be out of debt. If everything stayed the same as it is now, I would be out of debt with the exception of my mortgage sometime in early 2019.

    • I have many medical issues and depend on my health insurance. It really is the best benefit that my job offers. I know that COBRA exists, but I'm not sure if I could afford the cost. I will be in SERIOUS trouble medically speaking if I lose my health insurance.

    • My wife does work, but what she makes is only enough to pay mortgage and part of our debt. There would be nothing left for other bills.

    • We could trim spending some and maybe clear up an extra $100, but our budget is already very tight.

    • Some sort of severance would most likely be offered. I have heard $1000 dollars for every year employed and I have heard $5000 for every year of employment. That would give me either $12,000 or $60,000.

    • I am looking at other positions, but most with my skill set would require moving. With our financial situation right now that would be difficult. My credit score sucks currently. Given the market and the amount of work needed to fix up our house, selling it would be very difficult.

    Questions:

    • What should I start doing now?

    • What are my options for health insurance?

    • What is the best way to use severance? Savings? Pay off some debt? Other?

    • Generally, how helpful would employment pay be?

    • Given that I would be unemployed and my wife makes so little could we get any other sort of government assistance?

    • Is there anything else that I should know/do?

Again, this MIGHT NOT happen, but it is a possibility and I need to be prepared. I would most likely look to leave the job once my finances are in order, but right now any change would really be a hurdle.

    Thank you.

I spent $700 this semester on food I didn't need

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 12:43 PM PST

    Hi all,

I am a college student and have been doing pretty well financially this semester, being able to buy myself "stuff" whenever I want. However, what I never realized was just how much money I was spending that I could have been saving or paying off loans.

I live at home, so it is perfectly easy for me to make a sandwich and eat lunch at school that way. But instead, I chose to buy lots of coffees, burgers, Popeyes etc. and burn $700 which could have been $100 or less if I were more frugal and prudent.

Pay attention to the little everyday expenses and see how they add up, especially as you start out. Use MINT or some other software to figure out where you money is going so that you can learn from your habits and mistakes.

EDIT: looks like people resonate with this! My first solution this week?: using cash only for food and coffee purchases, limited to $20 per week no matter what. This is still a lot of money, but a good place to start and will eventually get this down to maybe $10 or less. I live at home and my parents purchase all the food, coffee, chocolate I actually need, so I have no excuse.

Being threatened by a “Legal Department”

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 09:49 AM PST

I just got a call from someone claiming to be from a legal department saying that I owe US Bank $887 for overdraft fees or some crap. He was talking so fast I couldn't even hear it all. This account was opened in 2004, and I don't know when it was stopped being used because it's quite possible my douche ex-husband wrote bad checks on it (I was 18 and stupid). I haven't had any contact with this bank account no later than 2006 and I don't even think it was that long. I think I actually stopped using that account in 2005. This guy says that they've sent me notification after notification at one of my old mailing address which I have the forwarding set up so I would've recieved it here. He's telling me that the statute of limitations (10 years in Iowa)doesn't apply to the bank. He's telling me that he's going to levy my bank accounts and garnish my wages. Obviously I know that he can't do both, but you get the picture. He said after all the court costs and fees that have been incurred adds up to $1400. I honest to God do not know anything about this this was 11 years ago plus and I'm just now hearing about it. I'm really scared. I work two jobs trying to pay off everything and take care of my kids. My husband works as well full-time. I'm wondering if maybe I should take my name off of his bank accounts? I don't know what to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have no idea how much of this is actually mine or how much of this is my ex-husband. I just don't know. He says that he's going to go ahead and file it with the courts. I am under so much stress right now this is going to topple me over the edge. I don't have money for a lawyer and I just don't know what to do. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE- I did get ahold of US bank and they said they sold the debts off to a company in 2007 and they don't have the amounts. I have no idea about these debts. I guess I probably do owe something but I've never received anything. Not sure where to go from here.

Anyone know a way I can lower it? My employer doesn't offer health insurance. Additional information - the original cost of my healthcare was $400 a month for a gold plan but I go $250 subsidized so $150 a month total for dental and general. Now for silver it's around $600 a month.

Always get a second opinion (dentist)(story time)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 01:41 PM PST

So two years ago I started going to a new dentist. It was a nice place, great reviews online and close to home. On the second appointment the dentist asked me if I grind me teeth at night and I said "I don't think so". He said there was some kind of wear on my teeth that indicated grinding. He recommended a night guard that cost $650.

Didn't have that money so I never bought one. The next 2-3 times he kept on bringing up the same thing. I decided I should get a second opinion from another dentist to see if I really did need a night guard. I went in today and didn't tell them about the previous dentist. I just told them I hadn't seen a dentist in years. Got my teeth checked and they said I had perfectly healthy teeth

Long story short, everyone is a salesman, even your dentist. Always get a second opinion before spending a lot of money.

    Im scared

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 12:16 AM PST

EDIT: Im not sure some people are understanding my situation. I trim for SWIM so SWIM will pay my electric and rent (on a small trailer) I "get" movies and music for 3 of my friends who in turn pay for my internet. I get most of my wage garnished from the state of Oklahoma. I have talked to lawyers about making it more fair but the cost and time is so silly. The last lawyer i talked to said it on average takes up to a year to stop tone down garnishment. I have been working on trying to fix this for years.

EDIT: Wow thanks everyone for makeing me feel better with good advice and hope that people care. The problem is not being able to get a job its the garnishments I live in Oregon now and this state used to set a garnishment limit on my pay. 4 to 5 years ago the state of Oklahoma took control of it with some new law. Since that day all my checks from jobs are comically small. Like 45 cents I have 3 real stubs from a full time job that are for less than $1 lol. Also Is m not trying to milk the state for disabled pay but I am a bit crazy. I have mild auditory hallucinations at night. I have a medical weed card so im not just some stoner.

Im 31 and I have been working under the table (trimming weed) and making youtube videos for some years now like 4. I don't make much money I pritty much trim for rent and bills. The YouTube is slow going but a man can dream. I have had mental problems for a long time (Depression anxiety) and im trying to get back to the point where I can pull my life together. Its hard to explain the gap in job history and even then I worked for a temp agency for 5 years before that and the agency is no longer a thing lol. I just don't know how to start. Should I look for a low stress job (low stress lol no car) or should I seek disability. I would never hurt myself but *$ck man I haven't thought about it so much in a long time. My ex-wife had a child when we were together...it was not mine :/. So in Oklahoma (where I lived at the time) thats my baby no matter what. Lol and not to get all sad AF but she left me and came at me for child support... and I paid for like 2 years being held hostage by the logic of the cort system and I swear im not making this up my house burnt down. I was left with 2 or 3 boxes of stuff I had stored at my moms who lovingly took me in. The things I didn't get to save was my payment receipts so when my ex clamed I never paid a dime the state of Oklahoma informed me they don't keep records on payments thats up to the father. Lol at this point you see why I consider death an option so here I am. 31 sad AF and cant make money. I have skills like i said I worked like 375 temp jobs and never had a bad comment. I rock at customer service and sales but the only thing I could sell and not get garnished to death is drugs and that sucks and often times leads to more stress. Im not even sure what im doing here or even are hoping to hear. Just thanks for taking the time to read my rant lol.

Insurance only paid $50 of my medical bill, hospital charging me for the $700 balance I cannot afford.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 06:36 PM PST

I don't understand what is going on. I went into the hospital for 3 stitches about a year ago, and when the hospital claimed they couldn't get in touch with my insurance they billed me for the full amount. I eventually made them enter a conference call with the insurance company and forced them to start talking to each other. Now I've received a bill that the insurance company only paid $46 of my total $700 bill. This is ridiculous! Is there anything I can do?

Threatened to be taken to small claims court and have my existing bank account frozen. Is this all legitimate?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 03:30 PM PST

Back in 2006, I opened up a joint bank account with US Bank with my father because I was a minor at the time. During this period my account became overdrawn a few dollars, thanks to my dad taking my debit card while I was sleeping and buying a pack of cigarettes without knowing (or caring) that I didn't have enough in the account to pay for it. The account immediately started accruing fees and daily overdraft charges. It became so out of hand, so fast I had no way of paying it off and basically just forgot about it. Fast forward to this week. I received a call from an unknown number saying they're a firm called PS Group and that they have intentions on taking me to small claims court to receive an amount of $2,456.02 due to the overdraft charges and fees back in 2006. They said that they will also report this to Chexsystems which they will then have the power to freeze all my existing bank accounts (I bank through Fifth Third).

This has all become very overwhelming and I honestly don't know what to believe. I talked to my dad about this and he believes it's some sort of scam, however all the information they have on me is indeed accurate. Even if it wasn't, he wouldn't be able to help me financially anyway. I don't have the money to afford paying them, and even if I did, is this all for real? Can they really take me to small claims court and have my bank account frozen for something that happened over 10 years ago? I tried researching this company but found very little information on them. How should I handle this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Messaged a woman on craigslist for her car, seems too good to be true, am I being bamboozled? info in description.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 07:09 PM PST

I messaged a woman on a craigslist post for a 2007 FJ cruiser listed at 1500, she responded saying the price is indeed 1500, car is flawless and she needs it gone because her daughter died and she can't see the car anymore. Is this too good to be true? Here's the email: https://imgur.com/a/xSndl

Also, this is a new email from her: `Hi, The car is located at eBay warehouse in Omaha, NE,headquarters, in the container, sealed and ready for shipping. Also the price is low $1,500 because i want a fast deal, the car belonged to my daughter and it brings me bad memories.Like i told, the car is in perfect condition with clear title, no liens or loans. All the documents including the title and the bill of sale with my signature on it, will come along with the car and it will take no more than 2-3 days to arrive at your address. The transaction will be made thru eBay's Buyer Protection Program because they can protect both of us and they also offer 5 days inspection period. You'll have 5 days to inspect, test and drive the car before decided to keep it or not. If the vehicle is not like I described, you'll ship it back on my expense and they will give you a full refund.eBay will hold the funds until you receive the car with all the papers work. Only after you confirm them that you wanna keep the car they will release me the funds. In this way, you will be able to inspect the vehicle before committing to buy it.

If you want to start the transaction with eBay just reply me with your full name, full shipping address and your phone number, then eBay will contact you with further instructions.

I am 15. Just received email from PayPal about Tax Payments. Please help.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 10:41 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I am 15 years old, and run a business. As of today (11/29), I crossed a gross revenue of $30,000 (NOT PROFIT OF 30,000, GROSS OF $30,000)!!!! I received an email from PayPal not only stating that they completely limited my account, banning me from possessing the ability to send or receive any form of payment, but that they need my social security number, tax id number, and worker employment number. I'm 15; evidently I do not have any of those things (besides a social which I was forcibly made to enter). I read this and though, ok, whatever. I can make another PayPal or if I have to, use my Dad's. Now here's where I am stressed, confused, and kind of scared.

The next portion of the email said this [direct copy from the email]

To comply with the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) rules, we ask that you submit your Tax ID number to us as soon as possible. Your Tax ID number is one of these:

    • Your Social Security Number (SSN)
    • Your Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN)
    • Your Employer Identification Number (EIN)

We are required to obtain tax ID numbers from all online sellers who receive payments for goods or services through PayPal. If you do not provide us with your Tax ID number, your account access will be limited, and you will be unable to request or receive money. After you provide us your Tax ID number, your account will be fully functional.

First off, do I owe any tax payments? Second off, how much would the amount I owe be if I've grossed 29,857 this year and 200 from another PayPal they somehow detected. That's around 30,000. These might sound like ill informed questions and I don't mean to sound stupid, but I am totally inexperienced when it comes to this and need someone's help. Thanks! The rest of the email provides numerous instructions regarding how to "reenable" my account.

    1. Log in to your PayPal account.

    2. A message will appear asking you to update your information.

    3. Click Provide Now and follow the instructions.

If you have multiple PayPal accounts, repeat these steps for each account.

We'll use your Tax ID number to send tax Form 1099-K to you and the IRS when the payments you receive meet the 1099-K reporting thresholds for the calendar year. For more information, please see our FAQs on the IRS reporting requirements: www.paypal.com/irs.

Although the actual email never stated that owe taxes, I went to that link and saw my gross and how the amount received meets the IRS requirements.

I recently bought my first house. Mortgage payment $900 Utilities around $350 monthly

Billed For Something from 15 Months Ago

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 06:55 PM PST

In August 2016, I met with an accountant for about 10 minutes for what I thought was a "get to know you" session to decide if I wanted to use the services of the firm. There was no discussion of any fees, and it rapidly became clear that I should look elsewhere. I decided not to proceed with using their firm.

In the mail today, I received a bill for $105 which is supposed to cover the meeting and an email she sent. The meeting and the email provided no value, but I would have been happy to pay this had charges been discussed...or if I had even received the bill anytime within, I don't know, a year of the meeting.

Since this was not the case, I feel like there is some end-of-the-year billable hour digging going on, and I'm not particularly inclined to pay.

    Thoughts?

I assumed I was gonna be making $850, but it's actually $805 every 2 weeks. Taxes went from 19% to 24% with my new job.

I assume Social Security is for the elderly, but I didn't know there was a federal tax AND a state tax that was deducted.

Is medical that's deducted for me personally?

I messed up and will now owe a LOT in taxes next year.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 05:09 PM PST

I work on commission and have the option to claim exempt from (most) taxes on a paycheck to paycheck basis. In February of 2017 I went on vacation and wanted a bit of extra spendihg cash so I turned off my taxes for that commission check. Fast forward to today and I have realized I never turned them back on. I feel like a doofus. Here are the particulars:

I have paid roughly 5.5k on 55k salary. I am in CT. I anticipate closing 60k this year. Can somebody please break down some options for me?

I have ~32k in my 401k. Can i classify this as a financial emergency?

Will the IRS work with me on an extended payment plan? What are the typical terms?

How can I best prepare myself for this?

Need your help! I read the Wiki, but I want to make sure I don't screw up my retirement/investment plan!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 07:41 PM PST

Hello and thank you in advance!

I am in my early 30s, and trying to "right the ship" when it comes to my retirement planning/investing. I read the wiki, as well as the links within it - very helpful document. I still have questions about how best to setup my 401k, an IRA, and take advantage of my company's stock options. If I am honest with myself, I think my insecurity on my lack of financial knowledge/feeling of deep shame for having not started has caused me to procrastinate getting started. These days are over now though! No more excuses.

My situation: I am stably employed. I make a salary of $105,000 yearly, with commission. This commission is paid out monthly, and can be unpredictable. I typically make $25k-$30k in commission, and will likely make this next year. However, I anticipate this figure rising in the future. I already have a 6 month emergency fund established.

    401k (suntrust):

    • From reading the wiki, I understand that I should contribute enough to max the match that my employer provides. They provide 2% match. Is this figure based off of my salary, or gross income? If it is gross income, how do I plan ahead for this when my income can change due to commission?

    • I have enough money in savings now to contribute enough to max the match that my employer provides. However, it is very close to year end. I would like to do this, and have it count for 2017. How do I do this given that the contributions to the 401k come from my paycheck?

    • I am having trouble figuring out if my 401k is "bad" 401k or not. I see one fund with a gross expense ratio below .1, but the others are .5 or higher. I can afford to max my 401k and an IRA – I am assuming, even if the funds are crap, it is still advisable to do this. Is this correct, or should I be investing elsewhere?

    • How do I differentiate between the funds in my plan? Any advice on which ones to go with? I know that having 30% bonds, 20% international stocks, and 50% US stocks is advisable, but how do I tell which funds accomplish this? I have included the funds below:

    • the net expense ratio is paid to fund company from fund assets

    • the revenue type and amount are revenue paid from the net expense ratio

    IRA:

    • With my income sometimes above or below the IRA cap ($133,000), how do I determine whether or not a backdoor IRA is necessary? I cannot 100% predict my income due to commission. Should I just go with the backdoor IRA due to this?

    • If I go with the backdoor IRA option, is it still smarter to max my IRA before my 401k? I can afford to max both – is this the best option?

    • I have enough in savings to max an IRA for 2017, but time is running short. First, does this make sense to do with a backdoor IRA, or should I just dump this money in my 401k? Second, if going the IRA route makes sense, can I still accomplish this before the year is over?

    • Any recommendations on an IRA given my situation?

    Stock Options:

    • I have no idea what I am doing with this. What is the difference between a share and an option? What do I need to do to take advantage of this? The below info for myself was in my HR portal at work. Any advice on what to do here? What info should I get from my HR person on this/what should I do once I get this info?
Option or Share # of shares vesting period grant date
    share 480 EE Grant 6-17T 01 Jun 17
    share 40 EE Grant 5-16C 04 May 16
    share 150 EE Grant 12-14 01 Dec 14
    option 1000 25% Grant 01 Dec 13

Thank you to everyone for your help. I have been reading about this stuff a lot recently, and I am hoping to rectify my past negligence, and build a better plan for the future.
