NJ) I think my annual checkup was sent to lab that is not covered

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 08:35 PM PST

I had annual checkup (bloodwork + urine test) with my in network doctor. I saw lab collection boxes that are in network so I didnt bother to ask (must be my mistake..). When I log in to insurance website, the claim is in progress showing allowed amount is $0. My paying portion is not updated as process is not finalized yet. And the lab is not under in network when I search. I dont have out of network benefit at all. In this case, do I pay 100% to lab? Im waiting for EOB... This is so unfortunate since I only make couple of hundreds for 2 weeks since I had to quit last job due to my situation.

I mentioned red light camera tickets while discussing quotes. Did I screw myself over?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 11:17 AM PST

Currently insured with Geico. I called Travelers looking for a quote, and when they asked me about moving violations I offhandedly said "Just red light cameras", thinking that since there's no points it wouldn't matter. The representative said "Oh dear...", took down my best recollection of a couple recent tickets, and put me on a long hold.

Does this only impact the quote that Travelers will give me? (They had a system outage and will call me back later today.) I'm worried they entered it in LexisNexis or whatever and that it'll raise my current premium with Geico.

Edit: This site seems to indicate that I'm safe because I live in NY, which classifies red light cameras as non-moving violations and/or bans insurance companies from raising premiums due to them. So I have no idea why the agent asked me about them.

A few questions regarding a Whole Life insurance policy that I've inherited

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 10:28 PM PST

    Hey folks,

My mom opened up a Whole Life policy in 2000 and the policy has been transferred to me and I am now the policy holder as well as the beneficiary. A cursory search shows that WL insurance is not recommended for most people which is unfortunate because I'm pretty sure my mom got swindled all those years ago. Anyways I don't really know what I'm doing and have a few questions. Here is most of the information I can pull up from the MetLife website regarding the policy.

    Issue Date: 01/08/2000

    Death Benefit Amount: $121,227.83

Death Benefit As Of Date: 01/10/2022

Dividend Option: Paid Up Addtl Ins

    Last Dividend Credited Amount: $351.00

    Scheduled Premium Amount: $141.00

Premium Frequency: Bill Every Four Weeks

    Surrender Info

    Net Gain Amount: $7,612.55

    Net Cash Amount Available: $40,888.55

    Cash Value - Base: $29,711.71

Paid Up Additional Insurance Cash Value: $11,176.84

Firstly, I don't understand the point of this policy. If my math is correct there has been $162,291(1151 weeks since policy became active divided by 4 * $141) paid in premiums since the policy was created but the death benefit is only 121k. Why would anyone open this policy instead of just letting the money sit in a savings account?

Secondly, wtf should I do? I got a letter that has informed me the policy is eligible for "Accelerated Payment" which is described as "A withdrawal from from the policy's dividend/rider values, if sufficient, will automatically pay the annual premiums." Is this the best course of action since a premium payment will no longer be required.

I know it's late but thank you for your time.

Easiest and Best Way to Shop Around for Personal Insurance?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 09:53 PM PST

My wife and I have three properties, three vehicles and a few other policies at State Farm. Overall we have been underwhelmed with State Farm and I feel like we may be paying too much overall. What is the easiest and best way to know if you are getting a fair deal/check market pricing that won't generate a ton of unwanted soliciting? Thank you!

Son drove my car and crashed into someone else. Insurance thinks it was me.

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 04:33 PM PST

My son(24) was using my car for the day and as he was driving through McDonald's parking lot hit a women as she was backing out of her parking spot. It was minor fender bender my car had zero damage and she had a little bump on the bumper. My son exchanged information with her- cops were not called. The insurance company called to verify what the other person said and I didn't hear anything from them again. I just assumed it was taken care of. This was august 2021.

I got a call today from my insurance (progressive) who said they were putting 4 points on the license and she said that they were raising my rate for leaving the scene of an accident and property damage. The things is they think I was driving and not my son. Now I'm worried since they fixed the other persons car that if I say I wasn't driving but my son who is not under my insurance they will come after him to pay for the persons car or they will come after me.

Another thing which might be important- my sons license was suspended before the accident. I don't know if the insurance company would have access to that or if I should say anything at all.

They raised my rate from 638 every 6 months to 1590 every 6 months. I can't afford that and I don't know what to do.

Should I tell them my son was driving and hope they don't come after him. Can they come after him?

My parked car was hit, Their insurance called to tell me the one driving was not on the insurance

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 03:50 PM PST

hey everyone, someone from advice advised me to post here about this issue. what the title says, basically, this guy was driving his spouse's car and was not on the insurance, only she was. He hit the train tracks near our house going way too fast and lost control (and there were rumors he might've been drunk but we're not sure) and he flipped and hit the back of our car. Tires torn to shreds, the back passenger door wont open, back rear is caved in, bumper is torn and bent.

We only have liability insurance on our car so our company isn't going to pay for the damages just on my plan alone, but I've never had this happen to me before and I've got no clue what to do.

We contacted our insurance company and they let us know that we have uninsured motorist on our plan, that theyre contacting the other insurance again, but I don't know if this is going to help us. The liable party has full coverage insurance, but they wont cover anything for us since someone who wasn't on the insurance was the one who crashed into us.

Does anyone know what this process looks like? is there anything I can do and ask for? Im basically just wondering if theres anything specific I need to ask for when talking to either insurances? I'm worried we would have to hire a lawyer and take the man individually to court, however they don't seem like they have much money and I doubt we'd get anything out of it but headaches and lawyer bills. If any of you have advice on what to ask for, where to go from here, that would be greatly appreciated.

I’m 18, would I still have higher car insurance rates because I didn’t take drivers Ed?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 08:53 PM PST

I know that minors have higher car insurance rates when they don't take drivers Ed; I never took drivers ed, but I'm no longer a minor, would I still have the increased rates because I didn't take it though? I'm in South Dakota, because I'm not sure if every state has the drivers Ed insurance rate thing I'm talking about.

Experience dealing with Allstate in NJ as 3rd party claimant with soft tissue injuries (NJ)

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 08:13 PM PST

Long story short, someone rear-ended my car at like 30-40 mph (with my family in it) and shoved it into oncoming traffic where it got into a head-on collision. No serious injuries but they did go to the hospital (in an ambulance) where they got examined and released.

The at-fault driver has Allstate and I filed a claim with them. So far, they only looked at the car and gave it a valuation (not enough to actually buy another car with the same features this one had). Still haven't heard from the adjuster and there's no settlement offer yet.

Does anyone here have experience with that? I'm wondering what I can expect in terms of the offer, and if I'll need to negotiate. I need to be made whole.

    Thanks all in advance.

Where to shop for home insurance (Florida)

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 07:13 PM PST

I've lived in my current home for 4 years, replaced my HVAC system and roof (with hurricane clips) in late 2020. And I saved some decent $$ on my home insurance by doing so.

I just got my new mortgage escrow paperwork and my insure has spiked over $100 a month and frankly the company (Southern Oak) has been nothing but a heart ache to deal with. Is there a website or sites that can show me multiple rates to choose from?

I'm paying the same $$ now than before I upgraded my roof/HVAC

UK Pay Per Mile Insirance Policies?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 07:00 PM PST

I have been looking at insurance policies as my car is due for renewal early next month and have seen some quotes for pay per mile insurance. This seems to be much lower in price than normal quotes (not a telematics box quote) by about £250, at 6.9p per mile.

I on average only drive about 4.5k miles a year, and is included on the price calculated (obviously I know this will go up should I drive more than 4.5k) The excess is normal, so I'm just wondering, is there a catch with this type of policy or is it really just quite good for drivers that don't drive a lot?

    Edit: insurance*

WA State: Landslides and "Difference of Condition" policies

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 06:43 PM PST

I live in Washington State and this recently happened:

Bellevue landslide investigation will take weeks — 'if not months' — says city

Several families still unable to return to Bellevue street where hill gave way, house slid

In this particular case, the homeowners may be able to go after local government because of the possibility of a burst water pipe, but if there is no evidence the pipe caused the landslide instead of the other way around, then they are fucked!

Today I was reading this article and it mentioned that typical homeowners insurance does not cover landslides. This article also had some info on the topic of landslides and insurance.

What advice does this sub have regarding landslides and how a homeowner can protect themselves when they live in this kind of environment?

    Thanks

I bought a brand new Toyota Corolla XLE 2022 for around 25k on 1/14/2022. I was rear ended 6 days later, their insurance has accepted liability for the accident. I figured my car must of lost a decent amount of value given it wasn't even a week old before getting into an accident, so how do i make a diminished value claim? WA state.

Xactimate Invoice Help for Flooring Removal (Water Damage Restoration)

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 05:05 PM PST

Hello there! I could use some help interpreting my water damage restoration invoice. During the process the restoration company removed a large area of vinyl plank flooring and the underlayment. I was charge for two separate Xactimate line items per square foot.

FCV Tear out non-salvageable vinyl, cut & bag for disposal

ULAY Tear out non-salv underlayment & bag for disposal

Shouldn't they have used the combined code?

FCVUV Tear out non-salv. vinyl & underlay, cut & bag for disp.

Thanks in advance for any clarifications!

Auto insurance claim (collision) TX - Progressive

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 04:44 PM PST

The incident date was November 29, 2020. Truthfully, I thought the claim had been settled and closed because of the amount of time that went by. I have since switched my coverage from Progressive insurance.

I was traveling in the fast lane of a major highway in Houston, and rear-ended the driver in front of me when she came to a complete stop on the highway. A truck rear-ended me about two seconds later. The police came out and a police report was filed with cooperation between all three of us drivers. The driver in front of me stated that she stopped short due to a reckless driver swerving in front of her from a left exit lane.

I just received a claim update in the mail from Progressive that states the value of damages for the driver in front of me may be more than covered by my policy. There is also a letter from a law firm offering me 30 days to settle for $150,000. The amounts are $49,013.69 in total medical bills, and about $71,000 worth of "other expenses" such as future medical bills, pain and suffering, mental anguish, future physical impairment, etc. (These expenses total up to about $120,000.)

I received this letter in the mail today and called the claims adjuster and left a message today as well. Is there anything else I can do to be proactive? I have no intent on settling, just wanted to reach out and see what options I might have.

Health insurance from another state? BC of California in MA Questions

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 03:49 PM PST

    Hey Insurance Peep,

I am considering accepting a job offer from a company based in San Francisco.

Myself and my wife live in Mass. I have a chronic kidney condition that needs expensive meds, and we need IVF coverage as we are currently waiting on round 2.

We have amazing coverage through my current BCBS of MA plan, both for my condition and IVF (6 Cycles covered fully).

    My questions are:

    1. In a general sense - how does a mass resident having blue cross of CA work? Are there issues with a "non-local" plan?

    2. How likely will Blue Cross of California be to also approve IVF? Is it in our "history" with them that we are already approved?

    Thanks so much!

Question on Insurance Claim after you no longer have the insurance

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 03:23 PM PST

Hi everyone. Something that happened I am still trying to grasp and hoping for some feedback.

I filed a roof claim 1/3/22 at the advice of our roofer. Our insurance period was 1/14/21 - 1/14/22 so it was about 11 days before the policy expires. We thought it wouldn't be an issue. The claim was started and an adjuster came out on 1/4/22. They inspected everything and wrote down notes, etc, and told us someone would reach out within a week but no one did. We didn't hear anything then just yesterday we received a letter saying our insurance was cancelled. We were completely confused, so is my claim automatically lost? The date of damage on claim was in June 2021.

    1) Is our claim automatically lost? Or since it happened during the time we had insurance, can we still continue with the claim?

    2) If we get a new insurance can we file the claim again under the new insurance right away?

How on earth to get a quote on non-owned auto policy?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 02:34 PM PST

Have done a search here and people mention getting non-owned auto for a few hundred a year, some mention they got quotes from Travelers, GEICO, etc.

I cannot find any way to quote a non-owned auto policy online, and I've contacted a half-dozen agents for a few carriers and none of them even know what I'm talking about-- They say they have never heard of such a policy and keep asking for my car details. One agent followed up with the carrier (Progressive) after I emailed a link to the Progressive website where they talk about non-owned auto policies, and came back saying Progressive doesn't write such policies in the state?

Any ideas on how I can get a quote?

Context: I travel and rent cars for work and personal, and would like to have a liability policy to cover me (credit card covers damage), and also to be able to get umbrella liability. I do not own a car since I live in an area where it's walkable and has decent public transport (Northeast).

    Thanks for any help!

    Rear-ended on 2 separate occasions

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 02:34 PM PST

I got rear-ended by a drunk driver a while back. I documented it and everything, but it took a while before the driver's insurance could verify the story with their insuree, and then found them at fault. I then also got hit again in the rear bumper when I was in the grocery store, and that person didn't stick around or leave their insurance info. Now, I have to either take my car in to a shop or take pictures via the drunk driver's insurance company's app/website, and submit it for them to value the damage. I'm worried they're not going to cover it because now my bumper clearly has damage on both sides, and the worse damage isn't from the incident with their insuree. I may not have a way of verifying that the second damage came afterward. What can I expect to happen next? Should I just take it to the shop within their network to get an estimate to replace the bumper? They're probably going to document the damage and the company will come back to me - or I can just tell the agent ahead of time.

Having issues with my dental insurance company paying a claim.

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 10:29 AM PST

Back in Octoberof 2021, I had a dental crown replacement. My insurance company is through my employer. I've had the claim of $800 submitted multiple times, but they refuse to pay out claiming that there is not enough information, specifically the month and the year of the restoration. The information is clearly stated on the ledger, so I don't know why they are claiming that the information is not there. Even the billing department of my dentist has tried contacting them but still no resolve. I'm not sure what to do at this point.

Neighbor's busted pipe - Repeatedly leaking and creating water damage in my unit

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 09:31 AM PST

My garage (condo) sits below my neighbors kitchen and the pipe above my ceiling has busted and created a leak on 3 occasions over the past 18 months. This has resulted in water damage throughout the ceiling and walls. The previous two times, the neighbor's requested to fix the pipe by opening up the ceiling in my garage, and although inconvenient, their insurance covered the pipe fix, as well as the damage in my unit.

This time, they decided to open up their kitchen floor to "fix" the pipe. When I asked about the damage to my garage, the neighbor said they were not responsible and that their insurance would not cover it. When speaking to their insurance adjuster, they mentioned that I would need to prove negligence.

Seeing as this issue is happening repeatedly, what steps should I take? I don't know how to prove negligence from the neighbor, but I also do not want to continue to have to open insurance claims or pay out of pocket to fix the damage to my unit, since this seems to be ongoing. I don't feel any more confident than the last time that this issue will not reoccur.

    Other things to note:

    - The cost of fixing the damage is close to the price of my deductible. My HOA advised that I open a claim to see if they can subrogate, but I don't want to pay my deductible or have my premiums go up, when I can pay the contractor a similar price myself. Can I open a claim, see if they can subrogate, and cancel the claim without any negative effects?

    - The pipe here exclusively serves my neighbor. It runs up the eastern wall of the garage and into the ceiling of my garage (floor of their kitchen).

    - Is there anything I can do about this issue continuously happening? Since the pipe is theirs, I am really out of the loop on what work is being done and have no control over contractors and/or the work they perform.

    - Based in CA

I'm just a back-of-the-house admin guy, so not having good luck finding any sort of class/courses/webinars etc for teaching how to file these submissions and not sure what the best resources out there might be for things like this.

Figured I'd reach out to the community for tips, any resources to recommend? Many many thanks!
