Just had the most fucking shitty interview experience of my life. Wtf happened Posted: 31 Aug 2021 07:00 AM PDT So I've been trying to transition from insurance sales to an upper level Business Development or AE role in the tech/software industry and have been applying for a ton of jobs online. I applied to a job that looked great. It checked all of my boxes, it was remote, the company appeared to have great culture, they were looking for someone who was creative, and it seemed like they put a much bigger emphasis on defining qualities versus background. I was invited to an interview this morning with this description: "Introduction call (15 minutes, video) You will meet X, our Operations Manager, who will provide a quick introduction to the company and the position you have applied to. You'll get to ask any questions you may have." I joined the meeting and we said hello. He told me to please introduce myself for 5-6 minutes and speak about my professional background and about myself personally. I went through my spiel and as I was wrapping up about myself as a person, I mentioned that I liked traveling and I recently went to Las Vegas for a weekend. He said "oh Vegas is open?" I said yes, but that there are mask mandates, social distancing, and some places wanted proof of vaccinations. I was just about to try to transition the conversation when he interrupted and said "hey let me just stop you there and be brutally honest with you. I don't think we should continue on because you don't seem like you'd be a good fit. We're really looking for someone with a software or tech sales background since we do Artificial intelligence and while there's nothing wrong with insurance, it's not going to be a good fit. So let's just end the interview right here." This really caught me off guard, so I said "oh, okay... Well if you don't mind me asking , why were you initially interested in me for the role?" He kinda waved his hand at me dismissively and quickly mumbled something about "one of my colleagues was really interested in us meeting you" then basically said okay thank you we'll keep your CV on file, and ended the zoom. What the fuck was that? They knew my background way before we set the meeting, we had barely gotten to talk it was seriously 7 minutes from joining the zoom till him ending it. I emailed him thanking him for his time and asked if there were any objections I could overcome for them to reconsider, he sent me a generic email stating "after careful discussion" they won't be moving forward with me. I know rejection is a part of interviewing, and sales, but I found the whole interaction really fucking strange. It definitely has killed my vibe and they day just began. [link] [comments] |
Woot Woot! I'll be an SDR in 27 days! Posted: 31 Aug 2021 11:03 AM PDT I've been interviewing constantly the last month or so. I've been turned down and rejected from quite a few. Did an interview with a publicly traded company that sells prospecting software. Absolutely crushed the interviews. I asked them to try to be as fast as possible since I had another job offer on the table that needed to be accepted today. Did my final interview yesterday and received the job offer a little later in the day. Signed the offer this morning. I'm moving to a larger city than I currently live in for the role and expect to triple my income. I'm 19 years old and couldn't be happier! I've been trying to get into B2B SaaS and this is definitely exactly what I was looking for. I put in my four-week notice on Friday. My last day of employment in my current role will be 9/24 and my first day of employment in my new role will be 9/27! No more selling extended warranties bitches!! I'd like to thank this subreddit for helping me in my quest to finding a job. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2021 01:44 AM PDT Hello r/sales , I am a 25 y/o who is about to graduate with his business administration degree, 3.9 GPA, and 9 years of working experience (zero direct sales experience). I stupidly received a DUI when I was 20, and it has been 5 years since it happened. I'm 3+ years sober now and really killing it (imo). Will my DUI prevent getting an entry level outside sales job with ADP? Thanks for your help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2021 11:02 AM PDT SDR Father, who art in Sales, Hallowed be thy opps, Thy pipeline comes, Thy calls be done, On the phone, as they are on Teams, Give us this day our daily SAOs, And forgive us our slow Quarter, As we forgive those who don't pick up the phone, And lead us not into poor leads, But deliver us from plateaus, Forever and ever, Amen [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2021 09:08 AM PDT Will try to keep short and not ramble on. Spent the last 6 years in IT, primarily within financial services. Started from the bottom fixing laptops to managerial positions supporting trade systems & applications. Covid hit and burnt out working 12-13 hour days Monday-Saturday. I even got promoted earning a little more money in base. Fast forward I quit my job for mental health, have bills/savings handled, and took an entry level inside sales role. It's been about 6 months. Stress is almost non existent but the pay sucks. Was promised an OTE equivalent of my previous base in IT but I'm far from that. Even after closing a few deals. Only 28 however looking to settle down, get married soon. All that fun stuff. However not possible in my current scenario. So, A) Do I keep grinding the sales role for potential upside move up the ranks (BDR, AE, etc) B) Go back to my job in IT making a decent living yet miserable day to day. [link] [comments] |
When you mail gifts and notes to your customers what have you sent with success? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:31 PM PDT I usually try and find a personal interest on LinkedIn or Facebook and then default to either Golf Balls, College, or local sports team items at that point. What do you all send to your customers to get a response and a meeting? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:19 PM PDT I just got a new job at a tech company who uses sales navigator. They all praise it and talk about it like it's the best. My previous company used zoom info and didn't have any sales navigator licenses. Zoominfo was 100x easier and quicker to use than my sales navigator experience has been so far. Zoom might not be as accurate, but it's a fantastic way to get a ton of contacts really quickly. Sales Nav seems so slow. And the results are lacking. For example, when I perform a sales nav search I'll narrow it down by company, and then type in a keyword that our prospects would have on their profile. For a company of 500-1000 employees, I'm only getting like 2-8 results. I sometimes get double digits, 10+, and I get super excited. With similar sized orgs using zoominfo, I'd easily get 20+ results. They keep praising salesnav "lists". I don't quite understand the purpose of lists though. I export to CRM from a search, and then the contacts live in CRM and I perform my outreach through there. So adding contacts to lists achieves the same thing that CRM does? I mean I work out of CRM and it keeps all my contacts organized. I don't see the point of lists. Can someone who's a salesnav pro give me some tips? Really missing my zoom license right about now.... Physician Staffing/Recruitment Sales Posted: 31 Aug 2021 10:30 AM PDT Anyone in physician recruitment sales and wouldn't mind sharing their experience? Equity and Commission Structure Advice Posted: 31 Aug 2021 09:53 AM PDT Took on a side project to help a software startup gain some traction by scheduling them some demos. They've never had a sales person before, and they've never closed a deal before, but they've had almost $500k invested through different investors over the last 10 years. The software's decent, but because they've never had a sales person/team they've never gone anywhere. Investors are finally pressuring them for results and the CEO knows he's not a salesman. He reached out to me asking for some coaching and some initial direction. Signed a 2 week contract just to get a pipeline built out for him, work on how to run a demo, and land him a few appointments. We're approaching the 2 week mark and everything is going according to plan, but I've been offered things that I've never dealt with before. I'd come on as the entire sales department. Get a few accounts, then start hiring some more SDR's and then act as the VP of sales and Marketing most likely. I've been asked how much equity I want, and what commission structure I'd want. I've got a rough idea what I'd ask for, but I want to make sure I'm not way off base. Equity: some plan that scales my equity up to 15% based on # of deals closed Commission: 15% of 1st year's contract value (he mentioned that he might consider offering a residual as well on my deals, but would wanting 5% of contract value on customers who renew after 1yr be redundant bc of an equity agreement) Would love some guidance [link] [comments] |
Territory Manager for Manufacturers Rep Firm- How screwed over am I getting if at all? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 09:51 AM PDT TL:DR Hired on Base Pay 3,800 per month + Commissionts- it's been 18 months and not a $1 in commission Never signed a contract No stipend for Gas, Tolls, Maintenance, etc. No company vehicle. Spend about $600 a month on gas No benefits such as health insurance, dental, 401K. Spend $550 monthly on health insurance No POS Reports, target numbers, or visibility. Landed big accounts- have worked many projects, no incentive to work any more since I don't get commission. I'm about to quit and start new career- full post below. Any advice or Hello, Throwaway account just in case. I joined this firm in March of 2020- never did sales previous to this, I was a CNC machinist previously. This firm represents security manufacturers through wholesale distribution, we have about 15 different lines with some pretty large manufacturers in this space. I got hired as a territory manager covering two states with a base pay of 3800 a month + commissions on any sales over my target number. Prior to me, they had a rep in each state now it is just me doing both. Well one week after I got hired we went into lockdown. I got "furloughed" basically still had to make calls and get trained, but my base pay got cut in half. No Commissions the first four months. In August 2020, things opened up and I got in the field visiting our distributors and dealers as much as possible with covid restrictions and dialed 20 dealers a day. I got my base pay restored. Fast forward to this August- I've landed some accounts that are some of our top accounts that I support and am in contact with weekly. I've also worked multiple projects for $20K-40K each and have supported many of our distributors and dealers through trainings, site visits, and demos. I haven't received a dollar in commission. I never see our numbers such as POS reports, YOY growth, and I don't have a "target" to even shoot for to start getting commission. On ANY line. We'll have meetings with our manufacturers and they'll sometimes bring it up, just about all of them have shown solid growth YOY. I brought up the commission structure and how I need to get on that for about the fifth time in July, because our owner has been saying for 18 months now that he will have to set the target and review with me but never has. He said this time, that I would get 1% commission on anything over the target. So lets say the target is 100K a month, if I do $200K that month, I would get $1k commission. Sounds like a rip off to me as he would get the full commission on the first $100K, then 80-90% of the total commission on the additional $100k. (Some lines are %5 total sales and some are 10%). Also: I don't receive benefits such as healthcare, dental, or 401K. So I spend $550 a month on insurance. I don't receive a stipend for gas and I spend on average of $600 a month on gas to travel to different customers. Gas is built into my base pay supposedly. I don't get direct deposit and my checks often come a week later. Ultimately I make $36K a year after deducting those expenses, not to mention tolls, wear and tear on my car, maintenance, etc. I talked to our other reps in different states and they're commission only, however they also don't get POS reports and have had to call him out on numbers that are missing. For example, a project for $50K that went through at a distributor wasn't factored in at all and he missed it by "mistake". They just get one number and he says, does that look good? And they're like how the hell are we supposed to know? So anyways... am I getting completely fucked? Obviously with my experience now I'd be sure to get shit in writing but I was green as can be and liked my boss on a personal level, didn't realize all of this until after months of being on board. Come to think of it, I never even signed a contract. It is starting to feel that I've been getting taken advantage of and I just wanted to run this across this board for advice, a warning, and perspective. Anyways- I have an in for our local Electricians Union and plan on getting there so I have a foot out of the door. But have you all seen any thing like this or experienced something similar? Thanks for reading, I'd be glad to answer any questions to clarify. [link] [comments] |
Has anyone transitioned from a marketing-role to a sales-role? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 03:42 AM PDT I'm playing with the idea myself. As technical/performance marketer (basically ads and other growth metrics), I spend a lot of time by myself in silence (as in, not talking to people). I got into marketing years ago while working retail as I wanted to "work from anywhere" which doesn't appeal to me anymore and I draw most of my energy from people so sales has piqued my interest. Also reading through the sidebar has also really contributed to that feeling too by learning more about the challenges of sales and the prospect of growth - both personal and professional - as it seems to offer more than what marketing has to offer me. Anyway, interested to hear if anyone has made the jump and thank you for reading. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2021 03:39 PM PDT I hadnt gotten a buying sign for the better half of a week when I thought of this, it almost seems like it could actually sell itself with if you had a humorous pitch for It. Thoughts ? Can it be that easy ? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2021 08:33 AM PDT I've been wondering if my commission structure is common or I'm getting shafted.. it's an inbound/AM Style role and I've been in it since Feb2020. Basically it is a tiered structure with retroactive percentage commission, paid quarterly, over a base salary. So if I hit the next tier, that percentage applies to every the quarter. Here is the breakdown: 0-$599,999 - 0% 600k-$899,999 - 0.25% 900k-$1,199,999 - 0.50% 1.2m-1,499,999 - 0.65% 1.5m+ - 0.75% I am the "top rep" of 3 (all with different roles) and average about $250k per month in closed deals, with a few outliers in the 500k range so far. I feel like I'm getting fucked slightly, since I don't even earn a whole percentage at any point, but is it because of the "nature of the role" or just because? [link] [comments] |

How do I get my foot in the door? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 08:18 AM PDT Hi All, I'm looking for an entry level position in sales with room for growth, I'm based in Florida but willing to move almost anywhere. I recently graduated from Florida State University with a degree in sales and had a job lined up but had my offer pulled in the final hour due to not having had my license for over a year (they give you a company truck and require a year of driving experience). Since then I've been looking far and wide for another opportunity and can't even seem to land an interview. I'm wondering if I'm just looking in the wrong places. Any input would be appreciated. Posted: 30 Aug 2021 10:12 PM PDT I am looking to hire a new sales person for an outside sales role . Variable commission structure - base and commission. Cold call but not a hard sell or saturated market . I interviewed candidate let's call them "Luis" twice now . Over the phone and recently in person . Luis was polished , did all of necessary research , had perfect formulated answers to all questions. Incredible detailed presentation - way more detailed than a sales person should be IMO . However , Luis wouldn't stop talking . Asking good questions but multiple questions at the beginning of the interview. Dominating the process from start to finish . I felt immediately drained as soon as I sat down to talk with Luis both times . My boss however ( not sales more operations ) loved Luis . Said Luis would work hard to me and not disappoint . I see Luis as lacking self awareness and just have a feeling I can't pinpoint . I don't think Luis would fit. Luis has also been unemployed for a while but could be a tough or different market because of covid. How do I know if I'm hiring the right person ? [link] [comments] |

New Job Offer in SaaS versus Existing Job in Tech Sales Posted: 31 Aug 2021 06:03 AM PDT Hey everyone, im deciding between staying at my existing job as a Sales Engineer selling an essential tech component or taking a Strategic Account Manager role at a SaaS company that sells e-learning development software. I was originally interviewing with the intention to get a job offer and turn it into a counter/retention offer at my current job, but it seems so good that im conflicted. Some details: Current position: - 99k Base / 125K OTE, with overdrive option but capped - bringing in a huge opp this year that will cap me out on my bonus; should receive bonus of ~$55k in January - company has been remote for 1.5 years but pushing for a return to office, at least 2 days per week New offer: - 120k base / 170k OTE, no cap, average rep hits or exceeds goal - with my background, im not the typical hire for this position but was able to get an interview because i know someone that works for the company that vouched for me - fully remote company and have been since they started - amazing benefits (money for WFH set up, brand new computer of my choice that ships direct from factory with no admin password crap on it, several months parental leave, wellness benefits, unlimited PTO (current job is 6 weeks PTO)) Was concerned about not getting my bonus at my current job if i switch, so the new position offered the potential of a signing bonus to tide me over (unsure of what to ask); i will also get paid the full 170k for the first 6 months until i get up to speed. I have interviewed at other sales positions for more money than im making now, but all in tech sales with a physical product that is kind of boring to me. Have wanted to break into SaaS but havent been able to and think this might be my only shot to make the change. Worried that i might not be good enough at it though, but willing to take the chance. I should have an official offer within a day or two; worried about what to do and how to approach leaving at my current job. What would you all do in a situation like this? Have any of your gone through this before? What was your experience like? Any regrets? Any additional details i should share? Thanks everyone for your feedback! So appreciative to have this community to toss this question out to, since i have no mentor or other figure in my life to bounce this off of. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2021 05:57 PM PDT We have a weekly money wheel for people doing exceptional for the last week. What's a good name for the "Money wheel" that doesn't sound so lame. And would hype sales people up. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2021 05:09 AM PDT My SO currently works as a finance manager at a dealership. She is great at her job and is consistently one of the top seller month after month. She is on track to earn $135,000 this year however car sales do tend to slow down during winter so to be on the safe side we are expecting $120,000 salary. This is a 100% commission job and she is really good at sales. She has been the number 1 performer is pretty much any sales job she has had even going back to a newspaper sales job she had in high school. The only issue is that she is facing a real burnout. Her dealership is a 45 min drive away and she gets Tuesdays and Sundays off. The long commute, combined with never having 2 days in a row off is taking a toll. Is there a sales job that can be work from home or even a sales job with a reasonable schedule (Weekends off) that she can look into which provides her with around the same compensation? We are okays with 100% commission as I have a stable job which can cover all the bills and her salary is used for savings/investing. We would love to hear if anyone with sales experience found a career like this. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Anyone getting inbounds from a Qanon guy? Posted: 30 Aug 2021 03:08 PM PDT I've gotten this guy inbound 2x over the last month, named David Harvey, who lists there company as Qanon Team DJ and variants of that. I mentioned it to two of my friends, who work in sales at different companies, and they've BOTH been getting it too. Guy even left 5 star Google reviews on our companies' GMBs lol I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this guy before, since it's weird he's done it to three separate & unrelated companies, one of which isn't in the same geographic area as the other two. I've been hoping he'd pick up the phone whenever I try calling, not because I think there's a potential demo to set or anything, but just so I can hear whatever crazy stuff they have to say. It's always interesting hearing people go off on random conspiracies (SMB sales sure are diverse haha), and he seems like he's got potential to dethrone the craziest calls I've had so far. Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:32 AM PDT I was wondering for those well into the industry how important is your education in your job? I'm thinking to either get an Advanced Diploma which would take 1.5 years opposed to 4 years for a bachelors as I've heard from a friend education doesn't play as big of a role in the world of sales/business but I wanted to look for another opinion.
