Career trajectory 29yo Specialty Pharmaceutical Sales Rep? Sales and Selling

Career trajectory 29yo Specialty Pharmaceutical Sales Rep?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 07:51 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!

I have work anxiety. I've been in sales ever since my child was born because I needed to make money living in the area I live now. However, my anxiety has allowed me to crush it in each role.

I have about 5 years of successful, progressive sales experience. 2 of them being in software, the next 2 in medical device, and the latest in specialty pharma.

Where in the world is my sales career heading to?! I need to offset my anxiety a bit and getting other perception will help. Also, open to discussion if anyone has questions*

Is it bad to leave a company after a month and a half?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 03:50 PM PDT

EDIT: Thank you all for your insights, responses and motivation, srsly appreciate it from all of you. Was about 60% sure I wanted to take the offer on before but now I feel a lot better about leaving so early on, so thanks again and hope you all kill it this year.

Got my first SaaS role a month and a half ago, was a graduate role I took even with a year and a half experience in sales as I wanted to get my foot in the tech space. As such, pay and commissions are pretty low.

Last week, I got a message from quite a new company headed by some big names who have jumped onboard from some huge companies and I thought I'd give the interview a go. Ended up impressing the head of sales in a role play and they gave me an offer the next day. The base + comms at my current job doesn't even meet the base they've offered me, let alone an OTE into the mid 100's. I would also be moving from an SDR role into an AE role.

My dilemma is that it's only been a month and a half at the current job and the way that will look on my resume. There is the possibility to be promoted at the current job in the next 6-8 months into an AE role but from what I know the initial base still wouldn't be what I'm being offered. LEAVE OR STAY???

    Career Advice

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 10:29 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I'm a 25yo and currently a SDR for a beverage distribution company. Before that I sold cars for about a year after graduating when I was stuck on what I should go for as a career. I enjoy sales, but I want to transition into an industry without such a low ceiling and higher earning potential. It seems that everywhere that I look wants technically sales experience specifically (Dell, HPE, etc...) so I'm stuck on what I should do now. Any help / guidance would be greatly appreciated.

The problem with the "What's your ideal solution?" question...

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 08:02 AM PDT

The problem with the "What's your ideal solution?" question...

I have never ever read anywhere a single recommendation to ask your prospect "What's your idea solution?" question.

Yet, this question seems a highly intuitive question to ask. Before any sort of meaningful discovery questions or conversation gets started, you get an idea of where your client is or what expectations they might have. You're also giving the client a blank canvas to spill out what's on their mind and you're also giving them a feeling of control from the very start. Yet, in books or on this great forum, I've never see anybody recommending that this question be asked. Can anyone explain this? Is the question really that bad?

So... What exactly do Sales Managers do?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 04:24 PM PDT

I've been working at a SaaS start up for nearly 5 years. I love the job and balance, hence why so long in one place, plus I've moved up a tier each year to Senior BDM.

During this time I've had 4 mangers on a national level. I found that none of them really..did anything? They have a weekly or bi monthly meeting with the team talking about wins/losses and our pipeline. Finishing with "anything I can help with?" Unless it's new leads, not really. Tell tech to make faster product updates and that can help? I mean how do you answer that?

So my question is what exactly are SM meant to be doing? How do you manage your team properly? What makes a bad SM to a great SM?

Leads from LinkedIn via sales navigator plugin

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 05:59 AM PDT

During a job interview I've heard of the company using a LinkedIn along with sales navigator AND another paid plugin which basically tries to (ugh i might have the terminology wrong) ... "make friends" with the target person at the company?

I think it's a type of invite/friend request where you can describe on a sentence or two the nature of the you wanting to connect with this person

You obviously need to pay for the software and sales navigator

The company said this method transformed their company's lead quantity and quality.

What's the method/sequence and has anyone tried it?

    Selling like Jordan Belfort

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 05:14 AM PDT

    Hello there,

As someone who has never worked in sales (although I would like to in the future!). Do salespeople really sell like Jordan Belfort in Wolf of Wall Street (I appreciate it's just a flim) or this just exaggerated and if not how do salespeople tend to sell and act when attempting to sell and close a deal.

Many Thanks for any responses, really interested to find out more about sales.

    Best,

    Jack

    Salesforce Salaries

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 04:55 PM PDT

Question - small to medium sized account executives

any idea on what those roles really pay - was discussing the role with a recruiter who said the base was $70k (there was overtime options adding another 10-20k) and then commission on top

So from those of you in the killing fields what is a true First year total comp as recruiters often balloon things

    Thanks

Need Help: Late Age, Transition from 8 Years of Car Sales?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 11:41 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I've read a couple of threads in here regarding transitioning from the retail car sales industry and had a few questions for y'all.

Long story short, a family member of mine, who lacks a college education, has been selling BMWs for 8 years. He makes great money, has won multiple national awards for his sales numbers, and is by far the best-selling salesman in his dealership. The 12-hour workdays and 6 day weeks are beginning to wear on him, though, as he is almost never home to see his family.

However, in his late 50s, he doesn't believe that any company will be willing to hire him at his age. I disagree with this statement and have told him to look for sales roles with greater work/life balance. He is also concerned that, if he were to leave this industry, he would experience a large drop in income and would be unable to move laterally (he makes about 220k now).

Note, he has very successfully worked in other sales roles as well. He sold pharmaceutical equipment for 3 years and ran his own florist business for 10.

Is he right in saying that he won't get hired elsewhere due to age and lack of a degree? Or should I get on him and tell him he's wrong? It's tough to see him feeling so trapped in his current work.

    Thanks, everyone!

Will working in sales always be like this?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 02:26 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

after graduating in business informatics, I started my sales career in an IT startup. I had a lot of liberties and the only KPI that was important to my bosses were the gross sales. Nobody counted my emails or phone calls.

Then, last year I started working in a temp agency. I knew from the beginning, that call numbers are important, but as long as your sales are fine, nobody would bother you.

That changed this year, the micromanagement now is at a crazy level. Not only do you have to make a certain number of calls each day, the bosses also look at your calendar and how you set yourselves tasks. I already got reprimanded several times, because some of my tasks were a couple hours overdue.

At the same time, our sales are through the roof and in the first quarter of the year, we have made a lot more than planned.

I am honestly just so annoyed and frustrated. I am chaotic and have a hard time structuring and organizing. However, I am good at my job and I know what's important. I just wish I could do my job without being treated like a child.

I like working in sales, but this experience makes me wonder, if I should change my career path completely. I fear that I just got lucky in my first job and this micromanagement is the norm.

    What are your experiences?

Gave my notice and my manager blew up, called me unprofessional.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2021 04:20 PM PDT

I put in my notice today and the call resulted in 25 minutes of me trying to keep it professional as my boss belittled me, called me unprofessional etc.

I verbally accepted a lateral move within the company middle of March. A few days later a Fortune 500 company reached out about an open position. I told then I had just accepted a new lateral role starting April 1st and they agreed to fast track the interview process and put a great offer together quickly.

I didn't expect them to make an offer so I planned to wrap the quarter and make the lateral move. The offer came with a few days left in the quarter so I decided to not tell my manager and finish the quarter.

I put in my notice and my manager flipped out. Saying that the way I went about things was unprofessional, unethical, I lied, he feels betrayed. Specially letting him go through all the hoops to move me over and how i should have been honest with him.

Not expecting the offer and getting it the last few days of the quarter I was worried about not getting the chance to wrap my deals and get let go the day I told him.

I feel bad but ultimately it was the best move for me as this was just the last interaction of a toxic relationship.

Any way I can salvage things here? Other managers and employees wished me well so it would be nice if I could help him see things from my perspective and part on good terms.

Edit: the lateral move was me filling an empty spot because someone left a month ago. So they have already been actively recruiting for someone to fill the role. The role is the same as my last role just in a different territory

    Resume feedback

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 03:51 PM PDT

    Current resume/CV

I am currently in a sales executive position, and starting to applying for mid market executive roles in the tech sector. My current role is in job advertising, so the move to SaaS will be a change.

I also had some points I am already wondering about

    • My current role has much smaller contract values and sales cycles than what I would be going into for mid market. What are some points that I could poteentially highlight or steer towards in this regard?

    • During the current month, I have set a new company record for most new business revenue generated. I still have 2 weeks left and am certain I will bring more in, however I don't want to wait that long before applying for a role I've seen in case they fill it by then. Do you think I have phrased this acheivement well enough?

    • I'm unsure of the intro/bio - thoughts?

And feedback at all would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Amazon Area Manager Internship vs D2D?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 06:23 PM PDT

I want to do tech sales when I graduate. I'm a junior now in college. No work experience. I accepted an internship as an area manager at Amazon for the summer. It starts as soon as school lets out and I get a month before going back to school. I could start a full time phone sales job and go part time during the school year.

My question is, should I take the Amazon area manager internship or find a D2D bug spray or solar job for the summer? Do you think if I got a little sales experience and did the Amazon internship, maybe got an AWS certificate, I would be set for a tech sales job when I graduate?

    AE Support Question

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 08:56 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

Just wondering if there are any prerequisites to getting BDR support as AES in your organizations? I work for a smaller company that has a 1:1 ratio of BDRs to AEs but you don't get a BDR unless you hit 100% of quota on your own every month. Nobody on my team but the 1 person who does all webinars, gets inbound leads, and marketing support has been able to consistently do this on my team of 7 AES (we were at 12 but over the past 4 months 5 have quit)

Is this common across a lot of other SaaS orgs?

    Thanks guys!

What tools do you guys use to capture the most notes / details from on your customer calls?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2021 10:55 PM PDT

I'm trying to refine my note taking process and I'm interested to hear what all y'all have had success with.

I'm not the best multi-tasker and usually on calls I'm more focused on listening to what my customer is saying, in order to dig deeper and ask more relevant questions. Most of the time I end up having a great conversation with the customer, but I end up with spotty notes. By the end of the call, I'll have the key points and main ideas written down, but I'm missing some of the supplementary details that help bring context and paint the full picture.

Here are the tools I use currently - OneNote for precall planning and building my question list / script - Dooly for actually writing notes and syncing to Salesforce

Looking into doing call recording or a call transcription feature like Voice Intelligence from Dialpad. Curious if anyone has a workflow similar to that.

Are there sales jobs that I could work 1-2 days a week on my own schedule?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2021 02:28 PM PDT

Hey all! I have recently started working with a new company as a freelance drafter. The hours have been limited as they are working to get me full time work. I don't usually know if I'll have a day off until the evening before or the day of. I am wondering if there are any sales jobs out there that pretty much allow me to work whenever and whatever hours I want. One week might allow for 8 hours & another might allow for 24 hours, etc.. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!
