So I have $49,200.10 in my own name, all federal loans, with interests rates ranging from 6% - 12%, which are in forbearance right now due to the Covid pandemic, however that ends this new year unless they extend it, which I very much doubt. I also had another 15K in a parent plus loan with my mom but I've paid that down to only 5K left. I make roughly $40,000 a year with one job and working some overtime in the winter months (I deliver propane and fuel to farmers and rural customers in Iowa). So I don't want to take the full life of the loan to pay them back. I'm in an Income Based Repayment system right now, and I reapply for that every year. I've created a budget for myself, and out of the roughly $2,300 that I bring home after taxes, $1,000 of that is free to spend after all my bills including phone, gas, food, insurance, rent, and my parent plus loan payment. So I COULD put 1,000$ a month towards my own loans. Should I? I follow Dave Ramsey's baby steps kind of. I'm creating a 3 month savings account in case something goes wrong, which will be about a $4,000 savings account. Then I will tackle that remaining 5K I have on the parent plus loan, and then snowball that payment towards my own student loans. How long is this gonna take me? How much will I pay over the life of the loans?

Recently graduated during covid - how and where do I start paying loans (nelnet?)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 09:03 PM PST

I recently graduated and I have questions about paying off student loans. Specifically how and where. I want to start doing it soon since it seems like my grace period is ending by January.

I've been getting emails from studentaid.gov and nelnet so I assume nelnet is where I'm supposed to pay. Exactly how do I go about this? Can student loans just be paid online? What if I want to write a check instead? (Edit: I just found out Nelnet uses something called an ACH transfer which uses my bank routing number to transfer the money out from my bank account; is this correct? Is this what everybody does?)

Also if I'm paying online, is there a max limit to how much I can pay at once? I didn't take out a high amount of loans, so I'm glad I only owe about $25,000 and I already have half of that saved up ready to be paid back. Am I allowed to pay it all off towards my student loans all at once? Or am I supposed to enroll in some sort of payment plan? (I'd really rather not)

I'm not great at understanding money, but if anyone has experience with using nelnet to pay student loans, I'd appreciate your guidance. (or try and explain it to me like I'm 5 lol)

    Private Loans

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 12:43 AM PST

    Hey all,

I just got accepted into Paramedic School and it's about $10k for the program. The school I'm going to doesn't take FAFSA and isn't recognized on Discover or Sallie Mae or any loan service.

Do you guys know any ideas for loan providers that give loans to non traditional schools?

The program is NMETC out of Massachusetts if that helps.

What advice would you give to someone going to graduate from High school in 2 years before college?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 07:00 AM PST

Mistakes have been made and doing so is unavoidable, but aiming to prevent them is also helpful, especially in the long run. I want to know what to do and how to start early to try and avoid the mistakes I can and take advantage if opportunites that are currently available. I would like to avoid as much student debt that I can as I've heard terrible things about them along with regrets. What would you have done differently or recommended to someone going to graduate in two years before they head of to a (likely 4-year) college. Where should I start in order to be best off. What would you reccomend to avoid or start. Please bless me with your knowledge.

TLDR: I want to know where to start early in terms of student loans, what to avoid, and what mistakes are common.

My loans are split between 3 lenders. Should I refinance half of one to be able to tackle a portion quicker?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 06:52 PM PST

To elaborate..i have 30k federal, 30k priv w mohela, 30k priv w AES. All rates around ~4.5%. I'm thinking of refinancing 15k from the mohela so I'll have smaller payments and can snowball the 15k, thus freeing up more capital to then attack my other loans with. Is this stupid or more of a cosmetic fix then a practical one (ie wouldnt even be saving money or paying faster, would just feel better). FWIW.. 27yo, 70k salary w 10% bonus and 10% of salary in stock options, stable job.

    Thanks

    Stressed and annoyed

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 07:01 AM PST

I have been waiting for my financial aid refund and still haven't gotten it and finals are next week. I'm so broke from paying my rent and buying everything for school. I was relying on my refund so I could pay some bills with it but I haven't gotten anything. I spoke to several people at my school and it's a cycle that's getting me nowhere. One person says I'll get it in a week the other is talking about my records being locked. I'm so streessed.

Fafsa question undergrad to graduate school

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 09:06 PM PST

    Hi all,

I'm struggling to find this information on the web, so I thought I would ask you all.

I am graduating with my bachelor's degree in about two weeks, and begin my MBA in January at a different school.

Do I need to do anything more than add my new school, via revision/correction, to the current year (20-21) Fafsa in order to be eligible for Stafford loans for my MBA?

    Thanks!

Do undergrad student loans still accrue interest in grad school?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 12:20 PM PST

I'm a current undergrad student who will have ~30k in federal loans when I graduate. I plan to take 1-2 years to work before going to law school. Will my 30k from undergrad continue to accrue interest/expect payments while I'm in law school? Thanks!!

I need help! Discover or Sallie Mae?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 07:43 PM PST

Hi everyone! Due to circumstances surrounding my mental health and personal reasons within my family, I had to drop out of the fall semester but I do plan to go back in spring. However, I do owe a balance for everything unpaid and that's affecting me from registering into my classes. Since I'm not in rolled, I can't get a federal loan right now, so I'm looking at private loans. So if anyone could help out and comment on which loan is a better option between Discover or Sallie Mae and has had personal experience with it, I appreciate it. And for context, I have taken out only $3.5k since that is how much I owe from my freshman year to now (sophomore).

    Anyone have any refinancing tips?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 01:29 PM PST

I have a private loan w/ ~$50,000 to pay off, but with a 6.5% interest rate. I've heard about refinancing to get a lower rate, but not really sure how to get started on this.

Any chance someone who has gone through refinancing could give me some tips ??

    Thanks!

“Successfully” submitted FAFSA 2 weeks ago but it says on website I never submitted it?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 09:33 AM PST

I submitted my fafsa and received my confirmation email around 2 weeks ago but never received an email stating that it was processed. I went to the website to check and it said that my fafsa was never submitted.

Anyone else have this issue before? I submitted it again just in case but am worried that the same thing will happen again.

Any Spring 2020 grads that know what’s going on with Cornerstone?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 12:34 PM PST

I graduated in Spring 2020 so my grace period is ending. All of my federal loans are through Cornerstone. I read the news that all of their accounts are being transitioned to FedLoan but I have no idea when this is happening. The timing of this is terrible because I believe my first payment is due on December 9th. I reached out to Cornerstone via email to figure out what is going on. Their website refuses all attempts to input my bank info. Also the studentaid.gov dashboard is down for me. I will have to find time to call Cornerstone and I can edit this post once I get more info. I'd imagine a lot of people are in the same boat as me.

UK Maintenance loan for University - Zero hours contract - HELP!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:51 AM PST

Hey all, I have a zero hours contract and over the summer, I'll be taking as many shifts as I can whilst I have the time to work. But I'm worried about how this will impact my loan amount because it's based on household income. Of course the income I'll have as a student will be much much less but will they take this into consideration? How?

Good idea or should I avoid doing this?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 05:59 AM PST

    Hi everyone!

I'm expected to graduate in May of 2021 and have Parent Plus Loans under both my parent's names. I didn't know that the loans don't transfer to my name after I graduate (I'm first generation so we went in blind). I feel sooo bad about not doing my research before taking them out because my parents already have previous debt to pay and a mortgage so I don't want to add another hit to their credit. Would it be a good idea, or even possible, to pay off the Parent Plus Loans with a personal loan in my name so that way it's on my credit and not theirs? I know I'd be able to make payments on time if I left it under their name and just paid them through their accounts but I just don't want to add any extra burden on them. Sorry if that makes no sense I'm just trying to learn and prepare for when the grace period ends and I have to start paying them back.

    Question about Heartland ECSI Loan

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 07:52 AM PST

I had a Perkins loans through Heartland ECSI (terrible provider) which I paid off in full around a month ago.

On the ECSI page it shows as PIF but on the FSA website it still shows up as having a balance, however, the repayment date and amount show up as N/A.

Also I haven't received a PIF letter or confirmation from ECSI yet, as far as I know. Other than the PIF indicator on the loan balance.

And on one of my credit reports, the ECSI loan shows up as closed.

Is this normal? Does it take this long with ECSI to confirm PIF? Is there anything I can do at this point other than wait?

Not trying to sound paranoid but after everything I've heard regarding ECSI, I just want to make sure everything gets handled properly.

    Thanks!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 07:25 AM PST

I am currently looking for a new s book for January and I am wondering if Sallie Mae will transfer or will I have to complete another form. Their support number doesn't help me so I'm wondering if anyone else has already dealt with this.

    Thank you.

    How does private loan work?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 11:09 AM PST

Title. I haven't submitted my loan application yet, but how does it work? How much money will they allow you to borrow? Does your high school GPA matter? What are some limitations in borrowing terms?
