    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Fundamentals Friday Oct 02, 2020

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 01:06 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on fundamentals, but if fundamentals aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against fundamentals here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Most fundamentals are updated every 3 months due to the fact that corporations release earnings reports every quarter, so traders are always speculating at what those earnings will say, and investors may change the size of their holdings based on those reports. Expect a lot of volatility around earnings, but it usually doesn't matter if you're holding long term, but keep in mind the importance of earnings reports because a trend of declining earnings or a decline in some other fundamental will drive the stock down over the long term as well.

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

    Market Cap - Shares Outstanding - Volume - Dividend - EPS - P/E Ratio - EPS Q/Q - PEG - Sales Q/Q - Return on Assets (ROA) - Return on Equity (ROE) - BETA - SMA - quarterly earnings

If you have a basic question, for example "what is EBITDA," then google "investopedia EBITDA" and click the Investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

Electric truck player HYLN "IPO" and DD

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 10:00 AM PDT

The time for Hyliion's "IPO" (HYLN) has come.

    About Hyliion

The company description below comes from a recent Business Wire article. I can't provide the link as a certain other company can't be mentioned in the link itself:

Hyliion's mission is to be the leading provider of electrified powertrain solutions for the commercial vehicle industry. Hyliion's goal is to reduce the carbon intensity and GHG emissions of the transportation sector by providing electrified powertrain solutions for Class 8 commercial vehicles at the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO). Hyliion's solutions utilize its proprietary battery systems, control software and data analytics combined with fully integrated electric motors and power electronics, to produce electrified powertrain systems that either augment—in the case of Hyliion's Hybrid systems—or fully replace—in the case of the fully electric Hypertruck ERX system—traditional diesel or natural gas fueled powertrains and improve their performance. By reducing both GHG emissions and TCO, Hyliion's environmentally conscious solutions support its customers' pursuit of their sustainability and financial objectives.

    Investor Presentation

As someone else wrote here, Hyliion (HYLN) is not the next Nikola. This is a good thing.

The company's Investor Presentation can be found on their website's Investors page.

As can be shown in the presentation:

    1) HYLN has its defined niche: Class 8 trucks. Not even Tesla will be competing in this field, for a decade or more.

    2) HYLN has a total addressable market of $800 billion in the US alone. One customer, Agility, operates in 100 countries.

    3) HYLN won't play the capital-intensive game of setting up EV-related infrastructure. They are not in the business of being a "gas station."

    4) HYLN will first use renewable natural gas and natural gas generators for its Hypertruck electrified powertrain systems, yet is already developing them to be compatible with fully electric solutions such as hydrogen fuel cells. They are being practical here in addressing the needs of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of trucks (for the trucking industry).

    5) HYLN already has operational prototypes.

    6) HYLN already has million-mileage logs for the first number of trucks already deployed.

    Renewable Natural Gas

An article on FreightWaves provides a brief summary of what renewable natural gas is:

Renewable natural gas (RNG) starts as a biogas from the decomposition of organic matter, such as wastewater, food, green waste and farming. It is cleaned and processed into biomethane that is injected into the pipeline. When used as a transportation fuel, RNG has a negative carbon intensity, said Deanna Haines, director of Energy & Environmental Policy at SoCalGas.

RNG production is expected to double in the near future.

Infrastructure-wise, there are plenty of natural gas stations in Europe. For example, Italy has over 1,400, while Germany has over 800.

    Battery Management Supply Chain

Two years ago, Hyliion acquired Gentherm's battery division to have its battery management supply chain in-house.

    Financials

Future-oriented revenue data (projections), per the Investor Presentation, are as follows:

    2020: $1 million

    2021: $8 million

    2022: $344 million

    2023: $1.0 billion

    2024: $2.1 billion

Not every target company in a reverse merger discloses current or historical financial information. In this case, however, such information can be found in an SEC filing.

    Values and Governance

Hyliion has just committed to its reverse merger while having a non-classified board. It's one thing to assert that the company isn't conducive to fraud like Nikola has been (such as plastic model vehicles with no operating prototypes, or fake orders). It's quite another to demonstrate this.

One of the problems Nikola has is having a classified board. In the long run, a classified board isn't as effective as a non-classified board. This comparison extends to fraud prevention.

    Stock Price Disadvantages

Being an engineer by background, Thomas Healy does not have the marketing skills of Trevor Milton.

While Hyliion itself has the potential to break away from the Nikola drama, HYLN's price will likely remain quite dependent upon TSLA's price movements, just like all the other stocks in the EV space. Any out-of-control tweet by Elon Musk, let alone any performance hiccup over at Tesla, could have adverse effects on HYLN.

    Stock Price Advantages

Even I expected a second wave of COVID-19 to have a correction effect on tech stocks. I was mistaken in this regard, as large institutional funds have rotated back into the tech sector, including that part of it which is future-tech oriented (TSLA, SHOP, FSLY, ZM, etc.).

    Evaluation

HYLN is a solid hold for at least five years, maybe even ten. It is definitely worth a starter position first thing in the morning, and an additional position or two later in the day, for DCA purposes.

Disclosure: Long on shares and warrants.

Here is a Market Recap for today Friday, Oct 2. What a crazy day!

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 01:17 PM PDT

    PsychoMarket Recap - Friday, October 2, 2020

Stocks opened deep in the red Friday but managed to recover some throughout the session. Pres. Trump's announcement that he had tested positive for the coronavirus injected further uncertainty into an already volatile environment, concerned with the pandemic and the upcoming presidential election.

The Nasdaq (QQQ) underperformed heavily, finishing the day 2.81% down. The S&P (SPY) finished the day 0.94% down, and the Dow (DIA) finished 0.5%

Last night, President Trump announced that he and the First lady tested positive for the coronavirus. This comes shortly after it was reported that Hope Hicks, senior counselor to Pres. Trump tested positive. Joe Biden announced that he was negative after spending time with Trump during the debate. Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst at Bankrate.com said, "Word that the president and first lady have tested positive for COVID-19 marks the addition of further uncertainty when it was already abundant, typically toxic for financial markets. We were already expecting that with the approach of Election Day. No doubt this may exacerbate that risk amid no shortage of other sources of uncertainty and volatility." The White House has canceled all of Trump's previously scheduled public events, which included a rally in Florida on Friday.

Yesterday night, House Democrats voted to advance their new $2.2 trillion stimulus package, although it is almost certainly going to be struck down in the Republican-controlled Senate, who are rumored to have a ceiling at $1-1.5 trillion.

Today, the Labor Department reported that 661,000 jobs were added in the month of September, far below Wall Street's expectation, suggesting that the labor market recovery from the coronavirus pandemic is slowing amid fading government support, political uncertainty, and rising infections in the US and Europe. Economists surveyed by Refinitiv, a well-respected provider of global financial markets data, estimated that 850,000 jobs would be added. This is the last monthly job report before the November election. Rick Rieder, BlackRock's chief investment officer of Global Fixed Income, said "The economy is still recovering and still seeing month-to-month pockets of improvement, but clearly the rate of employment recovery will be uneven from here. The fact remains that there continues to be great uncertainty regarding the progression of the coronavirus pandemic and the timing of a return to economic normalcy, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the labor market.

Tesla CEO Musk suggests India entry in 2021

BENGALURU (Reuters) - Tesla Inc chief executive Elon Musk indicated on Friday that the U.S. electric carmaker will make a foray into India in 2021.

"Next year for sure," Musk said on Twitter in reply to a post with a photograph of a T-shirt with the message: "India wants Tesla".

Tesla's entry could come at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is increasingly becoming focussed on promoting the use and manufacture of electric vehicles.

    MSFT earnings predictions

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 11:52 AM PDT

Microsoft is expected to release its quarterly earnings at the end of this month. I know it is still a bit early, but I'd like to start a discussion before the pre-earnings volatility stage.

Last quarter's eps and revenue exceeded expectations by a pretty large margin, and with the pandemic situation not changing much since then I would expect them to report strong financials again this upcoming quarter. I'd like to add to my position before then. What do you guys think?

    Welcome $HYLN!

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 06:44 PM PDT

    https://twitter.com/hyliion/status/1311840843989475329?s=19

Tomorrow HYLN begins trading on NYSE, huge opportunity! Hyliion will be worth $7.2billion.

"In contrast to Milton, Hyliion's 28-year-old founder Thomas Healy exhibits a low-key demeanor" This won't go like NKLA because the CEO isn't crazy like Milton and because Hyliion has real products, real customers and real profits. It won't go like VLDR because Hyliion has a lockout to stop PIPE investors dumping on the first few weeks.

"In SEC filings, Hyliion said it expects to generate $8 million in revenue in 2021, rising to $344 million in 2022 and $1 billion in 2023. It has a preorder for 1,000 ERX drivetrains from Agility, one of the world's largest integrated logistics providers."

This has such potential for a long term hold. Really promising imo. What's everyone's take on this one?

    $AAPL - Apple to Announce Q4 2020 Earnings on October 29

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 10:08 AM PDT

Apple today updated its investor relations page to announce that it will share its earnings results for the fourth fiscal quarter (third calendar quarter) of 2020 on Thursday, October 29.

Fourth quarter earnings calls typically provide some insight into the early sales of new iPhones, but since this year's iPhones have been delayed until October, initial iPhone sales data will not factor into fourth quarter revenue.

Tesla Quarterly Deliveries Hit New Record!

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 10:53 AM PDT

Today, Tesla reported it sold 139,300 vehicles in the quarter ended Sept. 30 , slightly ahead of the 137,000 estimate. The figure topped the previous record of 112,000 vehicles achieved in the last quarter of 2019 and is 44% above the figure from last year.

Tesla has delivered slightly more than 318,000 vehicles over the first nine months of this year despite a temporary shutdown of its lone U.S. car plant in Fremont, Calif., as local health officials tried to halt the spread of the coronavirus. The company in January said it aimed to deliver more than 500,000 vehicles in 2020, an increase of at least 36% from last year's total.

    NIO Q3 Delivery Update

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 02:38 AM PDT

    Dear fellow investor-friend,

I've seen that NIO published today their Delivies. I'm biased on this company, because I already have 80 stocks in it and I'm very likely to increase this. These numbers are not bad at all, and once they start to deliver their Sedan (which is allegedly to come until end of 2021), I would even further increase my stake in it.

However, as always, it might be just a "meme stock" and will crash soon - build up your own opinion on this.

Disclaimer: I don't want to advertise here NIO. I know that there are - obvious - reasons against them. Such es "it is China" (which I would personally disagree with).

    Highlights:

    • NIO delivered 4,708 vehicles in September 2020, increasing by 133.2% year-over-year

    • NIO delivered 12,206 vehicles in the three months ended September 2020, increasing by 154.3% year-over-year

    • NIO delivered 26,375 vehicles in 2020 in total, increasing by 113.7% year-over-year

    • NIO began deliveries of the EC6 in late September 2020 and cumulative deliveries of ES8, ES6 and EC6 as of September 30, 2020 reached 58,288

    Cheers

Why are these stocks diving? $OOMA $SGH

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 01:06 PM PDT

I don't pretend to know much about the stock market and have become more of a gambler with my trading during COVID. That said, I'm sure there are a million aspects of trading I don't understand.

I have been looking at $OOMA and $SGH, they both show recent earnings where they outperform expectations, but drop as a result. I understand the markets right now are chaotic, but it seems counter-intuitive in my own logic. Is this a result of a sell-off after good news? Any opinions whether well-founded or speculative are appreciated!

Today Proves you don't listen to the Naysayers.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 07:18 AM PDT

As I speak Nasdaq just 1% down even with Trump Covid, slightly disappointing job figures, stimulus hopes not great and lots of bears and panic sellers out in force.

This market is resilient. Politics and who's in the WH doesn't matter long term. Covid is here to stay so stay/work from home stocks still the play.

I have plenty up or break even today: U, EXAS, DPZ, BABA, DE, PACB (up 6%), Z, PD, ETSY, CRM, NET, CRWD, LVGO, TDOC, TWLO (up 13%), FSLY, DOCU, PINS, SQ, ROKU (again!), PTON (again again!).

DON'T PANIC SELL. DON'T LISTEN TO THE BEARS/VALUE INVESTORS.

Yes, there will be volatility, but time in the market beats timing the market. Hold on slightly red days. Buy on big red days. Don't sell out of winners (just trim profits).

And finally, anyone who talks about BUBBLE this, or MEME that, just ignore. They are idiots.

Top performing EV/Solar/Wind stocks from ETFs (ICLN, TAN, PBW)

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 06:24 AM PDT

Spent some time looking up the best performing stocks (1 year and one month returns) from ICLN, PBW, and TAN because I'd rather not invest in the entire ETF when a lot of their lesser performing stocks are weighing down the returns.

There is obvious strong momentum in clean energy, and the criteria for my list is top ten one year performance in the ETF as well as strong one month performance. If a stock failed to have a strong one month return I didn't include it on the list (not showing strong momentum).

I currently own a lot of shares in ICLN and I plan on moving money into some of the following stocks:

    NIO 1 Yr - 1268% 1 Mo - 9%

    VSLR 1 Yr - 567% 1 Mo - 41 %

    PLUG 1 Yr - 480% 1 Mo - 7%

    RUN: 1 Yr - 415% 1 Mo - 40%

    BLNK 1 Yr - 330% 1 Mo - 46%

    LAC 1 Yr - 315% 1 Mo - 59%

    ENPH 1 Yr - 308% 1 Mo - 16%

    REGI 1 Yr - 275% 1 Mo - 40%

    DQ 1 Yr - 240% 1 Mo - 33%

    SEDG 1 Yr - 215% 1 Mo - 13%

    JKS 1 tr - 188% 1 Mo - 86%

    VWS 1 Yr - 111% 1 Mo - 6 %

    SPWR 1 Yr - 108% 1 Mo - 11 %

    CSIQ 1 Yr - 105% 1 Mo 9%

Why the drop today? UK Equity was up on March 27...

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 01:55 PM PDT

Don't know why the market is reacting this way to Trump's Covid. $EWU, which tracks British equity, opened at $23.17 and closed at $23.45 on March 27th, the day Boris Johnson was diagnosed positive.

Same risks affect both economies... their leader dies and has to be replaced. But the S&P closed down 0.96% today.

    Why the difference in outcomes?

Is it dumb to buy shares of a company on a downward slope hoping it’ll turn around?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 06:05 AM PDT

So I have 3 different companies Im looking at buying some shares in that each have a different situation. Aurora cannabis is on a downward slope due to overproduction, but their plan right now is to cut production to where there's not such a surplus, and cutting cost of cultivation so there's a higher profit margin. Ford is on a downward slope but it just hired a new CEO that's got me excited about the company. He's got big plans for new truck models and he stated his main goal right now is to get wall street's confidence back in the Ford company, which I hope maybe means higher dividends? The last one I'm looking at is Rocket Company, I think the only reason this is down is the recent crash. I've heard they make getting a mortgage much easier and it takes about half the time to process. I seriously think this one is only taking a hit because of the recession due to caronavirus but I think it'll fly up once people get back to work. I would love some thoughts on any of these three companies.

What is the difference if I buy a stock on the Swiss market instead of the US?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 06:36 AM PDT

    Hey guys and girls

I'm very new to stock trading and only invested about 1k in a Stock of Tesla, two Stocks of Microsoft and one Stock of Apple.

I can buy stocks right with my bank and I mostly buy them in my currency which is Swiss francs. Now I am just a bit confused why the prices of the stocks are so different between countries?

For example the Tesla stock in Switzerland is worth 397 right now and the Tesla stock in the US is worth 449.

Why is that and sorry if it is a dumb question
