Market Recap - Wed Oct 7 Please Enjoy

    Posted: 07 Oct 2020 03:07 PM PDT

    Summary

Stocks were on a run today, climbing steadily higher all the way into close, fueled by hope stemming from President Trump's tweets on the push to approve $1,200 checks and support for Airlines.

The SPY finished up 1.73%, the QQQ up 1.8%, and the DIA up 1.85%. Additionally the small cap IWM is up 2.18% for the day, and the Biotech etf IBB closed up 2.22%.

Yesterday in the early afternoon, Trump announced that he would stop all Stimulus talks until after the election. The markets saw a very significant slide off, only recouping a bit of the losses by the close. However, later in the day, going back on his word he made two significant tweets which helped to push the markets higher today. "If I am sent a Stand Alone Bill for Stimulus Checks ($1,200), they will go out to our great people IMMEDIATELY. I am ready to sign right now. Are you listening Nancy?" and the second was about the airlines "The House & Senate should IMMEDIATELY Approve 25 Billion Dollars for Airline Payroll Support, & 135 Billion Dollars for Paycheck Protection Program for Small Business. Both of these will be fully paid for with unused funds from the Cares Act. Have this money. I will sign now!"

During today, Speaker Pelosi conducted an interview on ABC's "The View" where she signaled willingness to keep discussions open, but disparaged the idea of stand-alone bills. She continues to support the idea that a one comprehensive package in the order of $2 Trillion must be passed in whole. House Budget Committee Chairman John Yarmuth said "We don't have time to save the economy piece by piece. As Fed Chairman Jerome Powell told us, we need to act now and act big".

It is worth noting Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, and Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin have constantly been advocating that with all the Fed has done, still more direct stimulus from Congress is needed to aid with the recovery. Many feel it is unfortunate to see that the stimulus has become a ground to push political agendas, while the ones who pay the price are the regular American citizens.

Tonight there will be a vice presidential debate between Kamala Harris, and current VP Mike Pence. According to a report published by Marketwatch the stakes will be high as "Vice President Pence must put in a strong performance against the democratic nominee, Sen Kamala Harris of California, to turn the electorate's attention away from the first presidential debate and a barrage of negative news coverage related to Trump's recent COVID-19 diagnosis and subsequent hospitalization".

On other fronts, hotspots for Coronavirus are picking up, with the latest restrictions coming from New York. The rule will come into effect on Friday and will affect businesses, houses of worships and schools. Boston has also delayed the reopening of schools for a week. India is closing in on the US to become the country with most infections, adding 78k new cases, more than double of the US, to total 6.8M vs the 7.7M total cases in the US.

Vaccine developments continue to move forward with the White House and FDA finally on agreement on the guidelines to approve for Emergency use. Also, During the John Hopkins University Vaccine Symposium, Operation Warp Speed Chief says within next month or two "We feel comfortable" that we will have one or two efficacious candidates to deliver doses to 30M people by Nov or Dec 2020 as per reports on the event by Benzinga. The story on Trump's recovery is that he has been treated with a cocktail with treatments from GILD and REGN and is currently recuperating presenting mild to no symptoms according to a report by CNBC.

Mixed messages from Trump regarding stimulus: Trump abruptly cuts off coronavirus aid talks, but tweets send mixed messages

    Posted: 07 Oct 2020 01:03 AM PDT

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/10/07/coronavirus-covid-live-updates-us/

The chance of getting a new stimulus: when pigs fly.

To make it short, when the stock market was open yesterday, Trump tweeted that he would not sign any new trillion-dollar stimulus into law until after the election. Then, later in the evening, he sent out tweets saying he would sign billion-dollar "skinny" stimulus bills, such as $1,200 checks and 135B for PPP. Mitch McConnell came out earlier in the evening supporting Trump's original position to not pass any new stimulus and promised to ram Amy Coney Barrett through the Senate. Of course, Jerome Powell is left in ruins.

At this point, anyone who thinks we are going to get anything from the federal government, especially from Mitch McConnell, is way too optimistic. Get ready for a bumpy ride in the stock market, especially the election results would not be finalized until early December and hopes in new stimulus is as far reaching as seeing the end of the pandemic.

Even if Trump changes his mind tomorrow, Mitch McConnell will be determined to butcher anything that comes from Nancy Pelosi. And, Nancy is not going to pass anything smaller than 2 trillions. We are not getting anything.

Billionaire wealth smashes records during covid

    Posted: 07 Oct 2020 05:29 AM PDT

    https://uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/billionaire-wealth-smashes-records-during-covid19-100402747.html

Global billionaire wealth smashed record levels during COVID-19 breaching the $10tn (£7.7tn) mark for the first time. Despite an initial dip at the beginning of 2020, speedy market recovery propelled the world's richest entrepreneurs to reach $10.2tn in July, some $1.3tn higher than the previous peak reached at the end of 2017.

The biggest gains were in technology and healthcare, according to the latest report by UBS and PwC which covered more than 2,000 billionaires representing 98% of the cohort's total wealth. The number of billionaires reached 2,189, up from 2,158 in 2017.

One reason why we may not see inflation. Fed money is ending up as another zero in billionaires accounts.

Now, a few words on the criteria I'm using and sources of data.

    1. TheStreet score

The first filtering step is to get stocks with Buy recommendation at TheStreet stock screener (https://www.thestreet.com/r/ratings/reports/ir-screener.html). I'm only keeping stocks with A+, A or A- rating (top ones), although A-, B+, B and B- are Buys as well.

    From thestreet.com:

A (Excellent) - The stock has an excellent track record for maximizing performance while minimizing risk, thus delivering the best possible combination of total return on investment and reduced volatility. It has made the most of the recent economic environment to maximize risk-adjusted returns compared to other stocks. While past performance is just an indication -- not a guarantee -- we believe this fund is among the most likely to deliver superior performance relative to risk in the future as well.

And about the methodology (source: https://www.thestreet.com/r/ratings/reports/detail/T.html):

TheStreet Ratings' stock model projects a stock's total return potential over a 12-month period including both price appreciation and dividends. Our Buy, Hold or Sell ratings designate how we expect these stocks to perform against a general benchmark of the equities market and interest rates. While our model is quantitative, it utilizes both subjective and objective elements. For instance, subjective elements include expected equities market returns, future interest rates, implied industry outlook and forecasted company earnings. Objective elements include volatility of past operating revenues, financial strength, and company cash flows.

    2. Zacks Rank

It is required that the Zacks Rank is Hold, Buy or Strong Buy (so we're avoiding stocks with Sell and Strong Sell recommendations). The Zacks Rating utilizes a completely different system, based on company earnings-related data, in particular earnings estimate revisions and earnings surprises, to predict profitability of holding the company's shares. More from [https://www.zacks.com/education/stock-education/zacks-rank-guide-6](http://(average, from experts)):

The Zacks Rank is a proprietary stock-rating model that uses trends in earnings estimate revisions and EPS surprises to classify stocks into five groups: Strong Sell, Sell, Hold, Buy, Strong Buy

A portfolio of Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) stocks has beaten the market in 26 of the last 31 years with an average annual return of +24.3% a year; more than double that of the S&P 500's +10.6% .

    3. Weiss Ratings recommendation

We're only keeping stocks with Buy (B) or Strong Buy (A) recommendation.

Wjat are these scores? This is what I found at their website (https://weissratings.com/help/rating-definitions):

"A" Rating: Excellent. The company's stock has an excellent track record for providing strong performance with lower-than-average risk, and it is trading at a price that represents good value relative to the company's earnings prospects. While past performance is no guarantee of future results, our opinion is that this stock is among the most likely to deliver superior performance relative to risk in the future. Of course, even the best stocks can decline in a down market. But our "A" rating can generally be considered the equivalent of a "Strong Buy".

"B" rating: Good. The company's stock has a good track record for delivering a balance of performance and risk. While the risk-adjusted performance of any stock is subject to change, our opinion is that this stock is a good value, with good prospects for outperforming the market. Although even good investments can decline in a down market, our "B" rating is considered the equivalent of a "Buy".

    4. Yahoo Finance recommendation and target price

It is required that the Yahoo Finance stock recommendation is at least mixed Buy/Hold from experts. Additionally, the predicted target price (average, from experts) should be at least 5% higher than the current one.

    5. MarketBeat recommendation and taget price

Similar to Yahoo Finance, it is required that the MarketBeat stock recommendation is at least mixed Buy/Hold. Additionally, the predicted target price (average, from experts) should be at least 5% higher than the current valuation.

    6. Piotroski F-Score

The Piotroski score is a number between 0-9 that reflects nine criteria used to determine the strength of a company's financial situation, including profitability, leverage or operating efficiency. Zero is the worst value and nine is the best. As we can read in Piotroski's paper from 2000:

In addition, an investment strategy that buys expected winners and shorts expected losers generates a 23% annual return between 1976 and 1996, and the strategy appears to be robust across time and to controls for alternative investment strategies.

It is required that the score is 4 or higher. The values were retrieved from https://www.gurufocus.com.

    7. Moody's Daily Credit Risk

Moody's Daily Credit Risk Score is a 1-10 score, which provides a forward-looking, one-year measure of credit risk. It is updated daily and takes into account day-to-day market movements compared to a company's liabilities.

The value is retrieved from https://markets.businessinsider.com and is expected to be in the range of 1-6.

    8. InvestorsObserver Overall Score

The rank has a value in between 0 and 100. It takes into account both technical analysis and fundamental stock data. An Overall Rank of N means that a given company is rated above N% of stocks, therefore the higher the number, the better. My requirement is that the company has InvestorsObserver Overall score of at least 50.

    More detailed explanation from https://www.investorsobserver.com/learning-center/what-the-scores-mean/what-does-the-overall-score-mean:

The Overall Score combines our two technical scores (Short Term and Long Term) with our Fundamental Score into one metric. This makes our overall score a great place to start when evaluating stocks, regardless of your investing style.

A low score doesn't necessarily mean a stock is likely to go down, just that our system doesn't think there's much of a bullish case for it.

Please note that the company profile data (short description) was taken from https://www.tradingview.com (sometimes I shortened it) and dividend data was retrieved from MarketBeat.

I hope you enjoyed the reading. What do you think about this stock selection and the strategy? Feel free to leave a comment below.

A new forecast released today estimates Amazon's delayed Prime Day sales event will top last year's by bringing in an estimated nearly $10 billion in worldwide sales when it runs later this month. According to eMarketer, which released its first-ever Prime Day forecast, consumers will continue to spend heavily on e-commerce and seek out deals ahead of the 2020 holiday season, benefitting the major sales event.

The firm says of the total $9.91 billion in Prime Day 2020 global sales, $6.17 billion will be generated by U.S. consumers.

This is ahead of what Prime Day achieved in years past. In 2019, the sales event delivered $6.93 billion in sales, eMarketer says, with $4.32 billion from the U.S. Total Prime Day sales in 2016, 2017 and 2018 were at $1.5 billion, $2.47 billion and $4.13 billion, respectively.

2 Years in at 59%, sustainable?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2020 12:03 PM PDT

2 years in, no options, just hand picking about 13 stocks.

Is this sustainable? Should I look into options? Does this sort of theory of stock picking work in the options game?

A new report that lays out a road map for the Democratic Party to put the brakes on the dominance of Alphabet Inc's Google, Apple Inc, Amazon.com Inc and Facebook Inc was released on Tuesday.

It broadly recommends that companies should not both control and compete in related businesses, but stopped short of naming a specific company.

Investors, when is the best moment to sell? Will there even be that moment?

    Stocks that haven’t popped yet

    Posted: 07 Oct 2020 07:32 PM PDT

    Hey folks,

As I look at the stock market so many of the companies in my watchlist are at all time highs or close to it. I have positions in 4 of the many but have trouble pulling the trigger on the rest, mostly because of PE. As of right now i'm considering getting into AMD this week. Current positions are in activision, domo, Pinterest, and crowdstrike.

The only growth stock I've found so far that hasn't doubled in the last 6 months is Impinj but i'm striking out trying to find more. If anyone wants to share some tickers or information on how I can find some companies I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

    Advanced ETF Strategy

    Posted: 07 Oct 2020 11:19 AM PDT

So I am a Canadian but we all know the growth is in American Markets.

I have heard almost from every conservative investing source that you are suppose to do around 70% in VTI and 30% in VXUS.

That way you have exposure to the broad US market, low management expense ratio - exposure to the international market players incase the US is ever stagnant like Japan, decent management expense ratio.

I personally also like the idea of maybe 5% in SLV and 5% in GLD when they go to lows and then waiting for highs.

However I know a lot of you know incredibly detail on the various ETFs and strategies and I am wondering how you all look at it and why.

Additionally as a side question and one I have never been able to understand.. Why in the world is SPY the most traded S&P 500 tracking ETF. I don't understand why it is so big for options and day trading compared to VOO or IVV or something. Anyone actually know about this? Someone said it was the first one to come around and historically has built the largest following for being first out of the gate but I am not sure that stands up to modern reasoning.

I look forward to hearing all your opinions :)

Stocks bounce back as Trump softens stance on possible federal aid

Stocks tumbled late yesterday after the President tweeted that he had shutdown talks with the Democrats on a stimulus package, pledging to enact something after he won the election. However, they are bouncing back this morning following new tweets from President Trump that suggested he was open to limited and focused agreements on airline support, paycheck protection and a $1,200 stimulus check.

ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., minutes from the Federal Open Market Committee held on September 15-16 are scheduled to be released today at 2 pm ET.

TOP NEWS: After the market close last night, the House Judiciary subcommittee on antitrust reported its findings following a 16-month investigation, claiming that it sees monopoly power exhibited at Facebook (FB), Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOG, GOOGL). The Democratic report seeks a break-up of the tech giant's platforms and looks to limit their powers going forward.

Apple responded by stating that it "vehemently disagrees" with the conclusions reached in in the U.S. House report and that it doesn't have dominant market share in any categories of its businesses, while Facebook, Amazon and Google also pushed back against the conclusions of the subcommittee with their own statements.

In COVID-19 news, Eli Lilly (LLY) announced additional details on its SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibody programs - including interim data on combination therapy in recently diagnosed patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 - and plans to make these therapies broadly available to patients. Based on the combination therapy data, along with the previously disclosed findings for LY-CoV555 monotherapy, Lilly has engaged global regulators, including the FDA, regarding potential Emergency Use Authorization, the company noted.

Shares of Levi Strauss (LEVI) are up 5% after jeans maker reported sales, gross margin and earnings that were better than consensus forecasts.

MAJOR MOVERS: Among the noteworthy gainers was Ocular Therapeutix (OCUL), which rose 20% after the company reported preliminary Q3 revenue for Dextenza. Also higher was Elanco (ELAN), which gained 12% after activist investor Sachem Head Capital Management confirmed it holds a 5.9% stake in Elanco common stock, noting that the the net investment costs of the common stock, the cash settled swaps and the physically settled swaps directly owned by the Sachem Head Funds is approximately $1.21B.

Wall Street's reactions to social media stock news

    Posted: 07 Oct 2020 01:07 PM PDT

House report on Facebook, top tech executives to testify and other notable stories from this week in publicly-traded social media companies

DO NOT PASS GO: At the conclusion of a 16-month investigation, the House Judiciary subcommittee found that monopoly power existed at Facebook (FB), Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOG, GOOGL), according to CNBC's Lauren Feiner. While the findings from the report cited monopoly power on all the previously mentioned companies, the report noted Facebook enjoyed monopoly power in online advertising and social networking. The almost 450-page report also suggested Congress make changes to antitrust laws that could result in parts of the companies' businesses being separated. on antitrust reported its findings. However, a government effort to break up Facebook from Instagram and WhatsApp would defy established law, cost billions of dollars and harm consumers, The Wall Street Journal's Jeff Horwitz wrote, citing a paper that company lawyers have prepared in the wake of rising antitrust legal threats.

CEOS TO TESTIFY: The Senate panel voted unanimously to authorize subpoenas to compel the testimony of Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, Google's Sundar Pichai and Twitter's (TWTR) Jack Dorsey before the Senate Commerce Committee on October 28, Politico's John Hendel reported. The company heads will address liability protections that internet companies enjoy, data privacy and media consolidation. It will be the second time this year that top tech executives testify before Congress.

BIRDWATCH: Twitter is developing more tools to minimize misinformation across its platform including a new product coined "Birdwatch," Sarah Perez of Tech Crunch reported. Birdwatch reportedly cuts down on misinformation by providing more context for tweets, in the form of notes. Birdwatch gives viewers the added functionality to "attach notes to a tweet and the notes can be viewed when clicking on the binoculars button on the tweet itself," thereby giving additional context about the statement, wrote Perez.

TIKTOK LATEST: U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols said he will hold a November 4 hearing on whether to allow the U.S. government to block transactions with TikTok that the company cautioned would effectively ban the app's use in the U.S., Reuters reported. China has taken the stance that the United States' bans on mobile applications like TikTok, owned by BytedDance, are in violation of the World Trade Organization's rules. The Fly notes that Oracle (ORCL) and Walmart (WMT) have agreed to take stakes in TikTok Global, a newly created U.S. company that will own most of the app's operations worldwide.

SMELLS LIKE TEENS SPIRIT: Piper Sandler performed its semiannual survey of 9,800 teens across 48 states with an average age 15.8 years. The survey, conducted by analysts Erinn Murphy and Nicole Miller Regan, found that while Snapchat (SNAP) remained the number one favorite social media platform, TikTok overtook Facebook's Instagram as the number two favorite social media platform among teens.

Watchlist: 10/7 Stimulus Dead, Tech Break-up, Hurricane Season

    Posted: 07 Oct 2020 03:33 AM PDT

    Market Notes:

President Trump tweeted out that the stimulus negotiations are dead. He is refusing to talk about it again until after the election. Instead, he's directed the Senate to push through the Supreme Court nomination. This is a typical tactic for Trump. Negotiations could resume sooner.

House Democrats are suggesting the big tech companies GOOG, FB, & AMZN are too big and should be broken up. A blue wave could drive tech stocks lower. Worth noting though MSFT was ordered to break up decades ago but managed to win an appeal and is still a giant.

Hurricane season is still running strong. A record number of named storm this year and a record 10 US landfalls once Delta makes landfall in the coming days. Green energy stocks are still hot.

    Watchlist:

ELSE is a low float, on watch

APWC is a low float, support at $2.20

RCMT is a low float, resistance at $2

SOL is a low float, resistance at $3

ARA is a low float, resistance at $12

OPTT is a low float, support at $2.60

HGEN is a lowish float, watching for a setup above $14.40

LQDT is a lowish float, resistance at $9

    ARAY has resistance at $2.80

Bioclonetics is a pioneer in monoclonal antibodies.

BioClonetics has proprietary tech (Clone 3) that Dr. Fauci/US Gov't tried to patent but Ivy League Lawyer, Scientist & BioClonetic CEO Charles Cotropia won the case.

Fauci declared under oath that the neutralizing technology in question had "utility" & "commercial value." But the U.S. Patent Examiner threw out the govt's bid to own Clone 3. He pointed out that Dr. Cotropia and BioClonetics had a prior claim.

While their are many with their feet in monoclonal antibodies, the ACE up the sleeve of Enzolytics Inc. are the Dr. Cotropia brothers—BioClonetics!
