Prior authorization denied. What can this mean and how do I fight it?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 05:39 PM PDT

Hi everyone. I had to get an emergency procedure this week within hours. Ended up with a referral from my PCP to the urologist and emergency surgery. I got one or two emails the day later from BCBS about referral and prior authorization information and it says the overall status was denied. What can this mean? I ended up checking for the urologist and he's within my network. I'm dealing with the emotional turmoil of the procedure I went through, I'd hate to find myself in a financial mess. How do you go about this? Thank you all in advance.

A car crashed into a building near my place of work this afternoon, causing the building to burst into flames and my car was parked behind it. Does car insurance cover my damages?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 08:51 PM PDT

Edit: I live/work on the Central Coast of California (USA)

Today around 2pm a driver accidentally drove his truck through the fence directly next to a store, hitting a gas line and causing the building to burst into flames. I work 3 doors down from this business, and park in the alley behind this strip of buildings every day for work. As soon as I heard about it my boss told me to get my keys and move my car, but by the time I ran around the block it was too late and the sheriff on scene was yelling at everyone to move. The fire went on for a long time after the entire block was forced to evacuate and my car sat there the entire time. Taillights are melted, my door handles are melted, and same with the door trimmings. I just got new tires that are still under warranty but knowing these cosmetic issues may exceed the value of my car (an older Honda Civic). I do have Progressive auto insurance and don't know how to proceed.

Is it possible to reopen a claim when my car is considered a total loss? (Also a little venting, sorry)

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 03:07 AM PDT

So in the past week I had a collision with a stationary object. Someone thought it was fine to leave a metal pipe near the freeway and went straight underneath my car. Busted up my transmission and had to get it towed. I drive a Honda Civic 2018 and has only 30k miles on it. No damages to the doors, windows, mirrors, lights, tires, anything other then what's underneath.Even the motor was still intact. I went to a Honda repair shop and I could already tell that the service representative just hated his job and made me pay a fee for the tear down inspection. He gives me his card and tells me that he'll give me a call sometime during the week, but not once did he call. So I decide to give him a call back and he tells me that he's not available or doesn't work when I clearly see him at his office. Later he tells me on the phone that the price estimate for repairs is around 12,000 and sends me a document explaining what needs to be fixed or replaced. I check the price again on the document and its up to 14,000! This guy not only lied to me on the phone, but thinks his part is done and doesn't answer my calls anymore. My insurance decided to declare my vehicle that I had for 2 years a total loss, but before that I asked if I could bring it to another shop before they decided to close the claim. Not one response and decided to close it anyway. Now on Monday I have to speak with a loss adjuster. I just want to fix my car and not have to look for another. I know I can find a better deal for repairs than what Hknda is offering (my mistake in the first place). If anyone can help me understand if there is a way to reopen this claim and refute my total loss I would greatly appreciate the help. Thank you for your input. California

Is there home insurance for a $10K home?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 06:01 PM PDT

I have a chance to buy 10 homes for $100K in a small midwestern town. Am planning to rent them out. Will hold them under an LLC.

My broker has told me home insurance policies usually have $100K minimums. That's too much coverage for each individual home and the premiums would be cost prohibitive in the face of such a low rent area.

    I am looking to cover:

    1. Catastrophic replacement value (tornado/fire)
    2. Roof damage (hail)
    3. Ideally replace lost rental income ($300/mo)

Will pay cash for the homes.

Has anyone seen solid insurance protection for a block of low cost homes like this? Love any pointers.

Hit and Run looking for next steps

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 09:19 AM PDT

I was the victim of a hit and run last night, my car was parked in a parking lot while some friends and I were paddleboarding the river. We ended up being on the water several hours longer than we intended so didn't get back to the parking lot where I was parked until about 10:30. I suppose that's beside the point but by that time of night my car was among the last cars in the parking lot. While loading we noticed that my passenger side doors had been smushed in almost completely. They are still secure and open/close but they are trashed. There was also a note left on the window that said 'Call me' with a phone number. After I finished my breakdown and dried my tears we called the police instead of calling the number; highway patrol came to take a report and photos. They called the phone number and left a message. He gave me a paper that says it's an exchange of information form with my car listed as 'Vehicle 2' and 'Vehicle 1' listed as unknown. When a second officer arrived they tracked the phone number down and told me it's someone in town and that they would do some further investigation. As this is really my first accident, my questions are this... basically what are my next steps? do I go get estimates now? How many should I get? I only carry liability on my car due to the age (I had plans on purchasing a new vehicle this winter) so do I report it to my insurance as an FYI? What do I do if they aren't insured? Any help would be appreciated as this has been super stressful and my lack of knowledge on accidents isn't helping my mind not race.

Edit: this is in Montana, USA

    covid and health insurance

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 08:29 PM PDT

My employer requested some paperwork to maintain the dependent coverage on my accounts. (my six year old child being the dependent.) Due to covid-19 and several months of closures, I was unable to provide the documents by the due date and now they have terminated his coverage and denied reinstatement.

What options do I have to get him insured? I applied on healthcare.gov, but wonder what my options are outside of that. I'm in a bit of panic knowing my wrecking ball of a child is ENTIRELY uninsured in the midst of a global pandemic.

Would I need to apply to several different private companies to get him covered for medical, dental, etc? Can you even just apply for a 6 year old to have their own "Account" for lack of a better word?

Should I push HR to allow me to reapply for him through them?

I've always received coverage through my employer so I am in new scary territory here.

Feeling like a failure parent and angry as hell at the company for dropping him so abruptly given the circumstances.

    I'm located in Alabama.

    Any info helps!

    CPCU

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 08:24 AM PDT

Hello. I'm a new poster, but frequent lurker. I'm a 23M new Underwriter for a major carrier. Is it too early/foolish to already pursue the CPCU designation? During the lockdown, I went on a whim and took and passed one section. I'm still relatively fresh out of school and in a studious mood, and might just knock it out. Also as I'm starting in Underwriting, do you feel the career path is more limited than if I started in Claims? Anyone here started in Underwriting before moving to Claims? Thanks in advance for the insight.

Got a claim from my states department of transportation

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 09:34 AM PDT

I got a claim from NC-DOT asking me to pay 5000 for a bent guardrail over a wreck that happened two years ago.

I had hit a patch of ice in December 2018 and bumped into a guardrail. I got charged with failure to maintain lane control but the case was dismissed, as I was found not at fault. Now they're trying to bill me for the damages even though the courthouse told me I wouldn't be liable for damages seeing the case was dismissed.

    What should I do? Thanks

    Insurance lapse while active duty

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 06:13 PM PDT

I leased a car in December 2018, registered/purchased the car in NY & insured it through USAA. On December of 2019 I got a quote from Geico & decided to go with them since the rate was way cheaper. After 8 months I come to find out that Geico used my current address in MA as the vehicles registered state. I provided Geico with the vehicles registration number, plate, my NY residency address & my current mailing address in MA. I made sure that I had all the same coverages that I had through USAA before I transitioned but the NY DMV suspended my license/registration because the car was apparently not insured for 8 months. I have been paying my insurance for those 8 months and updated all my Geico info to NY (I still live in MA). Any advice on how to go about correcting this? Also, how fucked am i?

Fender bender, not at fault, other party wants to pay out of pocket.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 02:23 PM PDT

Hello, all I defiantly need some guidance in this. Yesterday I had a minorish fender bender resulting in my car being scraped all down one side with a few large dents. At the scene of the accident, I got the insurance info of the driver and all seemed fine and well. However later that day they called me explaining that since the driver was there daughter and their rates would skyrocket if they went through insurance they'd be much happier to pay out of pocket. Now I want to be abundantly clear that I have their insurance info and they said it's really up to me but they'd really prefer not to go the insurance route. Here are my questions,

    1. My car is a 1994 Taurus, its a beater. But I still want it to look presentable. What are the chances their insurance would total the car for the damage?
    2. The only quote I've gotten so far was for over 1000$ dollars, they want to paint the whole car. (Macco) What are my options if they turn it down or only want to pay part? ( I'm gonna get at least 3 more quotes. )
    3. Besides just being a good neighbor are there any other benefits to this? Any risks?

My parents want me to go the out of pocket route since I'm also a kid and they'd want to do the same in this situation. I don't want to be a jerk but the accident was 100% not my fault, I really don't think I should have to pay anything. I realize my car is on the beater side but IMO that shouldn't matter.

    I'm in MD FYI

    Thanks in advance!

My contract with my job is up very soon and I've never had to think about health insurance that wasn't offered through my employer. And help or advice?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 05:27 PM PDT

I am in NY. Right now I have health insurance through my company, but it looks like there may be a gap between this contract ending and me finding other work.

Ive had some people say I need to try and have another insurance plan lined up because if there's a gap between when you last had insurance and when you're applying for new insurance, then you have to go through the checkups and can be billed more if you have any pre existing conditions (which I do). But supposedly if you transfer your insurance with no gap in between, then you can continue the new insurance at a lower rate.

I have no idea if the stuff I wrote above is even true, but its been in the back on my mind

How do I go about looking for health insurance before my company insurance ends? Any advice is appreciated!

    Guidance needed in FL

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 09:50 AM PDT

Hello all, I need advice/help on a situation that I inadvertently was in yesterday. Please note this is a throwaway account.

There was an accident on the interstate where one car was rear ended by a 2nd car. I was directly behind the 2nd car and seeing the impact I hit the brakes hard and felt shuddering/immense pressure in stopping. This was my first time seeing it happened, so I was worried about the occupants of the 1st and 2nd cars. When I got out to make sure everyone was ok I observed that my car sustained no damages while the rear of the 2nd car received no damage as well, meaning no impact was made.

Insurance information was all exchanged but no police report was filed onsite from either the 1st or 2nd car, nor were the police called in at the scene of the accident. The 2nd car drove off first then a little while later the 1st car left. A construction worker offered his work badge as proof that there is at least one witness to the incident.. When I told him about how my car stopped and asked if I hit the 2nd car the witness said that my ABS activated which explains the shuddering. He further said that he saw my car earlier and did not see any evidence of impact/collision so I should be ok.

An hour later I got contacted by my insurance company saying that the 2nd car reported me as being part of the involved parties, and that the 2nd car said the police came onsite and a police report was filled out.. Even though I told her that it was false, she still said that an adjuster would contact me on Monday for a taped interview and other items.

I sent over pictures of my car and the rear of the 2nd car showing no damage, as well as texts from the 2nd car driver/owner saying that he told the insurance that I hit his car...

What should I do? What do I need to get ready for the interview besides recounting what had happened? Like I said this is my first time experiencing this and I am fearful of how it would negatively impact me.

    Looking for some guidance here

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 05:19 AM PDT

Thanks in advance, but I am looking for some Guidance here as I've never been in this situation.

I was hit at a red light by a car traveling about 40 MPH, maybe faster, and I was at a complete stop. My car is probably totaled, they still haven't looked at it yet but the back 3 feet of the car has been completely crushed. And the owner of the initial yard it was sent to said it was totaled but he doesn't work for my insurance company.

My neck and back have not stopped hurting since, and I am now getting concerned this will be a permanent issue. I have a second dr appointment scheduled already, but how do I make sure that if this is something that I will need to seek PT for a long period of time, that I get insurance to cover it for possibly years?

    Thanks!

How can I show proof of insurance?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 09:37 AM PDT

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question. I've tried to contact my insurance regarding this issue but I'm given other numbers or hung up on by the automated service.

I am starting nursing school this fall. I need to show proof of insurance before I start the program. I am under my dads plan so my insurance card has his name on it. My father isn't a native speaker so I've been navigating through the healthcare system for him so he hasn't been much help. I was told I need something with my name on it that shows I'm under my dads plan. Who else can I contact about this or how can I go about receiving a document that shows I'm insured?

Insurance company requesting complete medical records

    Does this seem reasonable?

Are insurance companies required to be HIPAA compliant?

liability/accident insurance For an international Rock Climbing Company

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 04:21 PM PDT

Hello I'm in the process of developing a business were we take teens Rock Climbing (single pitch or bouldering) and traveling from the US to other Country's like Spain, Cuba, Greece or South Africa. We would be the climbing guides as well as day to day guides.

I've recently hit a road block were I cant find any options for liability and accident insurance. Most companies don't cover climbing in other country's and when I search what mainly comes up is international Travel insurance for personal travel.

If anyone has any insight into this or how I could go about getting coverage for this it would be greatly appreciated!

HOI claim paying for all new siding due to color mismatch. We love the color, so I have questions on alternatives.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 03:13 PM PDT

Due to hail damage on our home, and an inability to match the siding, we have received a claim check to re-side the whole house. However, if we changed part of our siding to shake, LP smart side, and/or stone, we would free up enough pieces to repair the damaged areas. We love the color we have now, so we really don't want to replace it. Can we do something like this? What happens if the cost is less than the claim amount? We are not attempting to profit from insurance. I just don't know how this would work as it would be a suitable repair to restore the property albeit in a different way. Also, if we go this route, I assume they would not pay another claim on the undamaged areas? In other words, even though there is no damage to a certain area, because we received funds for replacing everything, I'm guessing we have to do so.

Thanks! If it helps, we were paid on an ACV basis and can submit proof of the repairs to receive recoverable depreciation. I'm hoping someone can help navigate this as I don't trust any of the contractors right now as they all want every penny of the claim check. Again, not intentionally trying to profit. I'd much rather we didn't have to go through this at all.

Had a car accident in Florida should I be concerned?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 08:03 AM PDT

I had a car accident in Florida which seems to be a no fault state

Everywhere I read it says in a no fault state each party should contact their insurance

The accident was not my fault, my car was totaled, I never contacted my car insurance and the other party insurance paid for the KBB value.

My question is should I be concerned since I haven't contacted my insurance?

How long does a DWI impact insurance?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 08:57 AM PDT

    (Maryland)

Over 5 years ago, when I was in my mid-20's, I was arrested for DWI and received PBJ. I've been sober since that night.

Anyway, I had insurance with Allstate. My family had a good relationship with our agent. Immediately after the DUI I talked to our agent. They told me that because I wasn't in an accident and was already insured that they had no reason to run my driving record and to be a very safe driver and not give them a reason to run my driving record.

So for the last 5 years I've been a very safe driver. I've had no tickets and one claim earlier this year for hitting a deer.

However, in the last 5 years my life has changed quite a bit. I've gotten married, have a career, and bought a house. I want to buy a car soon.

Through my wife I have access to USAA. I'd like to switch to USAA for my car insurance for the new car I am going to buy. My state also doesn't expunge DWI's so I know it's still on there. I know that by switching insurance they will run my driving record.

    Nervous about insurance licensing?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 09:23 AM PDT

When Covid started, I self-quarantined and took a long look at my life and realized that I was miserable and not making as much as I really need to get by. So I enrolled in Kaplan's insurance licensing program. My state test is August 14th but the closer I get to being done with my textbook the more I am failing tests and I'm pretty sure it's because I'm scared about taking my test. Do any of you have pointers on how to ease my nerves and pass? I have two weeks to chill and get okay with the idea of taking this test because this will determine my future. 23,f New Hampshire

My flight got canceled due to COVID and I have a travel guard insurance

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 07:39 AM PDT

    Hi All.

I purchased a flight back in January from Canada to the USA that got canceled due to COVID back in May. When I purchased the flight I have also purchased a Flight Protection Plan insurance from Travel Guard. The airline is now offering me vouchers so I can use in the next 24 months.

My question is: if I file a claim with the insurance company will my vouchers be invalidated ? In other words, the fact that my flight was indeed cancelled makes me eligible to get a refund independently of what the airline offers me ?

    Thanks.

Forgot to turn in plates for car we donated. How expensive will this be? Anyone been through this before?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 07:31 AM PDT

Long story short, we had a beater of a car that we donated to charity back in December of 2019. We took the plates off it before they towed it away, and made plans to turn them into the dmv.

For various reasons, this was never done. The plates were turned in today (7-8 months later).

Now what has happened is that the person who is on the registration had a hold put on them, so they can't renew their registration on their current car.

According to the case number, the case was opened in January and the registration was suspended in March on the vehicle.

My question is...according to their regulations, it's $150 for the first 30 days, then $7/day the lapse in coverage is occurring. How long does this accrue for? Is it for the full 8 months this has been going on? Just 3 months until registration was cancelled? Or could it all be waived simply because we have proof we no longer have the car/weren't driving it?

    Any thoughts on this?

Edit: Sorry, forgot to mention this is Maryland
