Posted: 03 Aug 2020 09:57 AM PDT Thanks so much for all the love. It's overwhelming. It's getting late here and I'm going to bed. I'd still love to give everybody who wants to beta access a link to the site. Send me a PM (it's easier to give you access if you send it instead of commenting below because Reddit doesn't throttle message responses) and I will send the link first thing in the morning! : ) Once again, thanks for the love. It really means the world. ImportYeti is a free tool that allows you to search over 70,000,000 bill of ladings to answer questions for pretty much any company you can imagine like:
I created ImportYeti because these bill of ladings are public information and nearly every large eCom / retail owner or FBA seller I know uses expensive alternatives to ImportYeti that are too cost prohibitive for the small guys starting out. It would be my hope that people don't use this to "copy" competitor products. There are already enough product clones floating around the internet. Rather, I'd love to help people understand which factories to use versus just blasting out e-mails on Alibaba, trying to intelligently decide which factories to visit, walking into a trade show blind or relying solely on connections with your existing factories. It is still in a super rough beta state. I've only invested a handful of hours and am interested in understanding if this tool is actually helpful and what direction I should take it in. I only want to create something if people really love it. If you're interested in beta testing the tool, please comment below or send me a PM. Any and all feedback would mean the world to me. EDIT: If you can PM me instead of commenting -- it would make my life easier. Reddit is throttling the number of outbound PMs I can sent : ) All feedback and other public comments are still crazy welcome of course! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2020 09:02 PM PDT Over the past couple months I've been working on a startup called 'Circle'. It's a social media platform geared toward self accountability. We help users track their own progress, share it and connect with people progressing in similar fields. We made a website ' circlemedia.app ' and funneled users towards it by putting flyers up, drawing out logo in chalk on popular streets. It's been 3 weeks and we just hit 100 k signups, we're up next !! [link] [comments] |
How to divide time code/support/marketing as a generalist? Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:46 AM PDT We are a small (company of one forever!) cofounder team of two. Which means the entire workload of building and growing is on the two of us ..❓I am struggling to find focus time between code, marketing, product & customer support. My cofounder is a hard core tech architect so he does the bulk of engineering work while I pick up small bugs and features. What is better - 2 hours of each task every day or one dedicated entire day for each? e.g. Mondays is marketing, Tuesday is code! 📆 Any other generalists who have gone through this? What worked for you? 🧐 [link] [comments] |
How do I protect myself financially as a sole trader reselling used electronics Posted: 04 Aug 2020 02:15 AM PDT I am UK based and have been buying and flipping some electronics online (laptops and mobile phones) for profit so I am classed as sole trader over the last 2 years. I have bought and sold around 50 items making around £2,000 net profit per year. A customer has had a kettle lead on a laptop charger melt and cause a burn mark on her sofa and wants me to replace their £1,000 sofa. They have provided photo proof of the melted lead and a scorched part of material on their sofa so I am satisfied that the incident has happened. What is my liability in both the above specific instance and in general if any harm came from anything I sold someone. Im thinking absolute worst case scenario such as if someones house burned down or someone died etc? And what measures should I be taking on goods sold. ie. is the combination of PAT testing and some sort of insurance required or is that overkill? I am interested in knowing what responsibility lay people (in a non business way) who sell their old electronics online have and what additional responsibilities are their if you are self employed. Please could someone that sells items that specifically includes electronics for profit advise what is my due diligence to prevent this happening and as to whether my liability would be potentially unlimited as this has got me rather worried and I need to know what actions I should put in place and what sort of insurance if any is needed. Posted: 04 Aug 2020 05:30 AM PDT Hi, I'm an immigrant living in California. Recently I've started an etsy shop to sell handmade stuff. I know I need a seller's license, and I've been on the site to apply for one but failed at it. My question is who helps with filing a license and helping me understand when and how much tax I owe? Is there a website that lists this out or should I go to an accountant, or a lawyer, or both? I'm really new to this and just unaware of what questions should I be asking too to set up a new business. [link] [comments] |
Anyone ever run into someone copying their logo? Posted: 04 Aug 2020 03:31 AM PDT My small business has a fairly simple logo with the company name, a particular word in the name in bold and a line under the company with specific colors. I was scrolling through Twitter and this new group that's been following my company account just launched their site with the same line under the company name, the same font style and even bolding one word of the name. The word is the EXACT same word that mine is. The other word(s) are different but their target audience is the same as mine. Could be coincidence. Could be inspiration. Note: I don't have the logo trademarked but I have the company name itself trademarked. [link] [comments] |
$5 for app install and rating - where to get them? Posted: 04 Aug 2020 03:28 AM PDT Looking for installs and ratings of an iOS app by US based users (no agencies pls). Paying 5$ per rating. What is the best place to source these besides fiverr and/or craigslist? [link] [comments] |
I accidentally started an adult novelty art business and I have a few questions Posted: 03 Aug 2020 05:23 PM PDT I got downvoted the last time I asked because I'm guessing people may have thought it was a troll post as I didn't include pictures. I have created a series of paper jumping jack dolls of historical figures (and Santa Claus.) They are nude, and when you pull the penis, they dance. I have been showing them off to customers at the bar I work at while off duty and they have gathered a ton of interest, with people I don't even know asking about them and if they were for sale. Finally on Friday a woman paid me $100 to make her a Freud one and also get off my ass and put them into production. They look like this. I had a very embarrassing conversation with a gentleman at the print shop and got some good advice on how to make them initially in a small scale with minimal overhead. I can produce each one, laminated, for less than $2 fairly quickly. I have two concerns:

Would it be crazy not to inherit the business? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 10:49 PM PDT I'm (20M) currently attending college, unsure of what to major in, while working part time at a pizzeria. A close family member of mine owns the pizza business and has openly said that inheriting the business is possible for me as long as I learn everything there is to learn about it. It's a pretty lucrative restaurant as the owner earns just as much, if not more than doctors. He plans on retiring within the next few years so this all doesn't seem that far away from happening if it does. I'm still planning on completing a degree at my university but I'm worried about the decision of inheriting the business. It seems stupid to me not to knowing the benefits, but there is always a big risk with inheriting a business from someone who was successful himself. I guess what I'm asking for is advice from those who have been in similar situations, thanks. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Aug 2020 11:43 PM PDT Hi, I'm a 16 year old high school student who's looking to start a company next summer. I am hoping to have my licence by then and will have access to car, making my business accessible to anyone in my small city (100k pop). I also am hoping to receive a $2000 grant for my startup, so for now let's say I have a $2000 business budget. I am brainstorming ideas for my business and would like some suggestions. Some ideas I currently have are
My future goals are to go to university for business/economics or engineering and feel like this would be a valuable experience teaching me what it takes to reach my goals. I also would like to do this summer project to see if I truly have a passion for business and would be willing to do it for the rest of my life. I appreciate any suggestions and tips. P.S - I plan on using this business mainly for experience and hope for it to be profitable, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if it isn't, making me inclined to take risks. Also I plan on doing it from May to September, but can continue if it goes well, or next summer if it's seasonal. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2020 10:49 PM PDT I am asking on behalf of my parents who are immigrants and cannot speak English well enough to find resources to get help. My parents run a C corporation small business that involves only themselves. My mother is the legal owner of the company. Both my mother and father are considered employees who are taking salaries and filing W-2 tax forms. They used up their Payment Protection Program loans for the allocated months and are in need of financial assistance after getting hit from the pandemic. As of now we are looking into unemployment benefits but after hours of searching the web, we are not able to find information on our specific case. It looks like my father is able to apply for unemployment benefits since he is legally an employee working for the company. However, would my mother be eligible for unemployment benefits even if she is both the owner and employee of a C corporation that is a paid a salary/files a W-2? Thank you very much for taking the time to read this. [link] [comments] |
Mentally and Emotionally Exhausted from crazy customers Posted: 03 Aug 2020 01:47 PM PDT Where do I start? I own a small business that started as something for me to do for fun but then gained traction doing t-shirts, decals, etc. I joined the local Chamber, started doing Farmers Markets and other events. Attended a Market last week as a shopper and a vendor saw my shirt and was interested in what I did and wanted custom logos and shirts done. Great, no problem. Customer browsed my site found another shirt she wanted. Placed her order Thursday night at 11:55pm I told her I would try to have them to her Saturday (like two days later) as she ordered 4 shirts and my current turn around time that is posted on my site, Facebook page, etc is 1-2 weeks and orders are completed in the order in which they are received. I got one shirt finished so she would have advertisement at the market Saturday and told her she would have the rest early this week. She wanted a refund and I told her per my policy which was listed in several places I don't offer refunds or cancellations on custom orders. Customer then filed a PayPal claim stating items weren't received on time and PayPal sided with me, then a few hours later she opens another claim stating it was a fraudulent charge. I have all the screenshots of her order us discussing everything and where she was demanding I cancel and refund. I've submitted all this to PayPal and they have sided with me again and now they are having their family contact me and harass me and creating fake profiles and leaving bogus negative reviews on my business page. What do I do? I'm exhausted. I had originally told her that I would offer her a partial refund (less than what she wanted due to my design time and materials) but she wasn't happy with the amount. CEBA and your Credit Report (Sole Prop vs Corps) Posted: 03 Aug 2020 09:32 PM PDT (repost from r/PersonalFinanceCanada) Hi All, Just wanted to confirm whether taking on CEBA will show up on your personal credit report if you're a sole proprietor? I'm pretty sure you'll be fine as a corporation, and the loan agreement (at least the one I read from TD), states that credit agencies will be looking at "you" as the business. In all cases, your personal credit report should (theoretically) be ok. It sounds like there have been instances where certain products at banks are coded (in their backend) as retail products, that are being used to hold your CEBA loan (especially if your CEBA loan is funded using a bank's credit card line). This may accidentally show up on your credit report (so you should do a soft check and call the banks if so). However, as a sole proprietor, you (as an individual) are effectively the business, right? You technically don't have a separate credit report for your business as a corporation would, and I would assume this would show up on your personal pull (*I know very little about sole props so forgive me if I got this wrong\*). Considering how clueless the banks and the CRA is in terms of approving CEBA for eligible participants, I seriously doubt they'd know how to answer this question. Thoughts? TD agreement: https://www.td.com/ca/en/business-banking/documents/pdf/CEBABBLoanAgreement.pdf CEBA showing up on personal credit reports (rumours / blog content): https://www.looniedoctor.ca/2020/05/04/ceba-loan-canada/ [link] [comments] |
Getting personal Loan to start supplement company. Posted: 03 Aug 2020 09:08 PM PDT Is 1000 dollars enough to get a 6000 dollar loan through a private loan provider. Anyone have any luck negotiating their lease post-COVID? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 08:49 AM PDT If so, how did you do it and what terms did you get? Landlord is only waiving April and reducing rent by $1k down to $6,500. This is still really hard for me to manage. Not sure what to do besides tell them I will be insolvent if this is what they request from me. Should I contact my lawyer and see what options I have? [link] [comments] |
Purchase option on commercial lease Posted: 03 Aug 2020 08:34 PM PDT We are working back and forth on leasing an additional property as we need more space. We are more or less happy with the terms, but we are trying to secure a purchase option and I've never done that before. Wondering if anyone has any input on whether what I want is possible. They say all is negotiable, but I don't know what is normal and what is unknown. Basically, first offer from us was to secure a purchase price of $x for $y for a 2 year period, with option to extend 1 year for another $y. They came back with $x+50k, purchase option of 1 year for $y, and option to purchase another 6 months for 1/2$y. I'm fine with the price increase, it's still a good price in our market (HCOL). But I want a minimum of 2 years, ideally 3 to exercise my option. While we are doing fine through the pandemic, I think we need the minimum 2 years to recover and 3 would be even better. Thinking of countering with $y for 1 year, with option to extend a year twice for $y each time. Do people run purchase options with 2 years worth of renewals? Just don't want them to blow me off for it. Need to also add a good guy clause if they want a personal guarantee, as well as make sure I have the unilateral right to renew after 3 year term. Though if we don't buy at three years it would probably only be because we want something different. Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |
"One-Third of New York’s Small Businesses May Be Gone Forever" - NY Times Posted: 03 Aug 2020 10:49 AM PDT Small-business owners said they have exhausted federal and local assistance and see no end in sight after months of sharp revenue drops. Now, many are closing their shops and restaurants for good. By Matthew Haag, Aug. 3, 2020 Updated 6:22 a.m. ET In early March, Glady's, a Caribbean restaurant in Brooklyn, was bringing in about $35,000 a week in revenue. The Bank Street Bookstore, a 50-year-old children's shop in Manhattan, was preparing for busy spring and summer shopping seasons. And Busy Bodies, a play space for children in Brooklyn, had just wrapped up months of packed classes with long waiting lists. Five months later, those once prosperous businesses have evaporated. Glady's and Busy Bodies are closed for good and Bank Street, one of the city's last children's bookstores, will shut down permanently in August. The three are victims of the economic destruction that threatens to derail New York City's recovery from the financial collapse triggered by the coronavirus pandemic. An expanding universe of distinctive small businesses — from coffee shops to dry cleaners to hardware stores — that give New York's neighborhoods their unique personalities and are key to the city's economy are starting to topple. More than 2,800 businesses in New York City have permanently closed since March 1, according to data from Yelp, the business listing and review site, a higher number than in any other large American city. About half the closings have been in Manhattan, where office buildings have been hollowed out, its wealthier residents have left for second homes and tourists have stayed away. [link] [comments] |
